Lotte Pakistan PTA Co-Generation Power Project Inauguration

L
otte Pakistan PTA’s Co-Generation Power Project was formally inaugurated on 27 August 2012 by the Honorable Chief Executive of KP Chemical, Mr. Changyyo Kim, along with the CEO of Lotte PPTA, Mr. Asif Saad, in the presence of Lotte PPTA Board Members, Senior Management and Employees.
Also present at the occasion were senior members and representatives of key partners in this project namely, General Electric, AG Equipment, Descon Engineering, and several others. The Lotte Co-Generation Project is the single largest project in the history of PPTA since the base plant construc-
tion and commissioning in 1998. This project is aimed to provide reliable and consistent power supply to the plant, consequently improving the plant equipment availability. The Co-Generation plant produces power using the world renowned Aero derivative type LM6000 PD gas turbine, manufactured and packContinued on page 8

Financial Results for the Quarter and Six Months Ended 30 June 2012
otte PPTA’s success and achievements have been nothing less than spectacular in the last few years, with this year being no exception. The completion of Lotte Co-Generation Power Project marks the commissioning of its biggest project to date, after the PTA base plant construction. Hats off to the project team and support functions for their hard work and outstanding effort. Q2 2012 also witnessed His Excellency, Mr. Choong Joo Choi, Ambassador for the Republic of Korea to Pakistan and Mr. Kag Gyu Hwang, President Lotte HQ visiting our new city office. Mr. Hwang’s entry in our guestbook, reflected LOTTE Group’s vision for Lotte Pakistan, to be a $2 billion company by 2018. At the same time, staff from Lotte PPTA attended an HR Forum in Korea, organized by the LOTTE Group with a focus on achieving its target to be a Top 10 Global Group by 2018. Lotte PPTA’s CSR commitments continued well into the year with support provided to Karachi United Football Foundation, LUMS and other CSR partners. I would also like to congratulate all those who have been part of the company for over 10 years. With summer coming to an end, I hope that the second half of the year proves to be as productive as the first. – Zain Talpur

President Lotte HQ Visits Karachi M
r. Kag Gyu Hwang, President Lotte Corporation, visited Pakistan on 12-13 June 2012. During his stay, Mr. Hwang visited the Lotte PPTA city office for the first time. On arrival, Mr. Hwang was received by senior management and given a tour of the city office followed by a presentation. Mr. Hwang also visited different markets and malls of Karachi to access investment opportunities for Lotte Group’s other businesses.

Learning Cultures L for 5 days in Ulsan, the Lotte PPTA delegation got an opportunity to visit Busan on the last day of the visit. Busan is South Korea’s second largest metropolis after Seoul. The city is located on the south-eastern tip of the Korean peninsula. Busan is expected to host 2018 World’s Winter Olympics. At Busan, the Lotte PPTA team visited Shinsegae (New World), the largest department store according to the 2009 Guinness World Records, and the Gyeongju historic areas. The protected areas of Gyeongju encompass ruins of temples and palaces, outdoor pagodas and statuary, and other cultural artifacts left by the famous Korean Silla Kingdom. The historic areas of Gyeongju are among the largest outdoor museums in the world. One other memorable visit in Busan was Aquarium, located in Haeundae Beach. It is the largest aquarium in South Korea. There are approximately 250 species and up to 35,000 marine animals on display. The main tank contains 3 million liters of

earning cultures, touring historical places, knowing norms of life from dawn to dusk are some of the exciting areas which come in our mind when we plan to visit a foreign country. One such life time experience was earned when 3 members of Lotte PPTA, Mr. Sohail Abbas, Mr. Sohail A. Memon and Mr. Yousuf Ali Hasani, went to Ulsan, South Korea during KP Chemical annual overhaul in May 2012. The visit was in line with the vision of the Lotte PPTA leadership to explore good engineering practices followed at Lotte Group of Companies and inculcate them at Lotte PPTA to achieve Lotte’s Vision 2018. Ulsan is the industrial powerhouse of South Korea, forming the heart of the Ulsan Industrial District. Beside KP Chemical, Ulsan has the world’s largest automobile assembly plant operated by the Hyundai Motor Company, the world’s largest shipyard operated by Hyundai Heavy Industries and the gigantic oil refinery owned by SK Energy. After sticking to work

he HSE and Technical Training department arranged a visit for the Tetra Pack Packaging Limited team (from Lahore) on April 19, 2012 to honor their interest in Lotte PPTA HSE & S management and fire-fighting systems.

Engagement Session with Trainee Engineers
A
group of four Trainee Engineers joined Lotte PPTA on 2 April 2012 from NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi and NUST (Pakiby Arif Raza stan Naval College), Karachi. The new recruits went through an orientation process in the Company’s Technical Training Centre. This orientation session helped trainee engineers to accustom themselves with the norms of plant operations. In order to acquaint the new recruits to the existing trainee engineers, an Engagement Session was arranged where existing Trainee Engineers shared their experience, training process and organization environment. New Trainee Engineers appreciated this initiative and requested the management to continue this in future for upcoming employees.

otte PPTA has induced a socially conscious culture within its organization by involving staff in Go Green activities. Lotte PPTA has always put health, safety and environment at the forefront. It is now the responsibility of every individual to contribute to a clean, green and healthy environment. On June 07, 2012 employees participated in a vegetable-planting activity. The Company’s values further demand that environmental consciousness spreads out from all employees to all those with whom they come in contact with. RO waste water is being used for gardening and vegetables purposes. The concept of Go Green has emerged as the way forward to address the threats of global warming and climate change.

The Companys aim is to provide organic fruits and vegetables to Lotte’s staff as the organic approach minimizes adverse effects on the environment. At the Lotte plant, land has been allocated to cultivate organic vegetables. The cultivation area has been divided into small portions for different departments, and employees from each department plant vegetables themselves.

The first phase involved plantation of various vegetables which has been followed by the plantation of fruits such as coconut, papaya, guava, chiku and lemon. This initiative has helped promote plantation culture amongst the staff. The admin team is now determined to engage other departments to take up this healthy activity.

Developing Human Resources – E&I Trainings
A
comprehensive training schedule has been developed and followed within E&I for training the team on both technical topics and RCMS procedures. The sessions are conducted throughout the year; the training is not only essential for growth and development but also for efficient and better performance. The quarter started with RCMS training on “Control of Portable Equipment” by Mr. Abid Qayyum. The training highlighted the process of inspecting and tagging portable electrical equipment and was particularly useful for trainee engineers who have joined re-
cently. In June, Mr. Muhammad Kamran Khan conducted an RCMS training session on “Isolation of Electric Supplies”. The training served as a refresher for the electrical team. In addition to the cascade sessions, technical training sessions are included in the training plan, which is developed to cover a variety of topics in electrical and instrumentation domains like transformers, control valves, hazards, etc. Mr. Nadeem Bhatti conducted a session on BLG instrumentation and its operation on bi-fuel while Mr. Syed Mehm-

The gas turbine package is integrated with a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) manufactured by a leading HRSG manufacturing company from Korea, Daekyung Machinery and Engineering Company. The HRSG recovers waste heat energy of the Gas turbine Exhaust to generate in excess of 52tons/ hr process quality steam. Two Fuel Gas Booster compressors from Ariel USA, provide the fuel gas at requisite delivery

conditions to the Gas turbine. The balance of plant include a state-of-the-art central control room, DCS, Scada, underground cable trenches, compressor hall, distribution transformers, switch gear, fire-fighting and detection systems and many other features. The plant design was executed by Istro Energo Group (IEG), Slovakia – a renowned name in power plant design, utilizing the latest advanced features used in power plants today . The construction of the plant was done by Descon Engineering along with the major equipment technical representatives under the direct supervision
of Lotte PPTA‘s project team. The project was indigenously managed in terms of Design Integration, Planning, Procurement, Contracts, Commissioning & Operations by Lotte PPTA’s Project team, who worked tirelessly to deliver the project in a most efficient manner, with better than planned cost, quality, and exceptional safety statistics whilst remaining within the budget. The commercial operation commenced on 17 July, 2012 following which it has been in successful operation. The efficacious delivery of this key project is testament to the Lotte PPTA team’s ability to successfully meet challenging targets.

n order to foster better and long term relationships with neighbouring industries, Lotte PPTA organized a customized training session on Defensive Driving for P&G Pakistan on 16th May 2012 at its Port Qasim plant. Defensive Driving is defined as driving to save lives, time and money despite the conditions and the actions of others. Mr. Naseer A. Qureshi conducted the session and covered following main topics during the session: zz Driving safety statistics zz Driving hazards zz Seat belts

Indigenous Solution: Minimizing Wear of the Oxidation Dryer
I
n order to maintain smooth operations of the Oxidation Dryer, the vendor has suggested a weekly lubrication regime for tyre chairs and keys – something which was not practically possible without production loss. Reliability team, in support of maintenance and workshop teams, came up with an indigenous and innovative solution of installing greasing spray nozzles By Syed Sajjad on tyre guards. These speAhmed cially designed nozzles were fitted with reinforced nylon tubing to allow self adjustment. The experiment was successful and the weekly lubrication is in progress since the last outage of the Dryer in June. This modification on the Dryer is one of a kind at our plant and will certainly
save the machine from excessive wear. The entire job was skilfully completed and demonstrated teamwork and strong commitment to the interest of the business.
