otte Pakistan PTA Limited has successfully completed its registration for OHSAS-18001:2007 & ISO14001:2004 certifications after a formal external audit conducted by the URS team. The certificates were received by Mr. Asif Saad from Mr. Ali Khan (Chief Executive URS). The certificate awarding ceremony was held in April 2012 and all executive committee members were present on the occasion. Lotte PPTA is now an independently certified company. cals, the professional support and advisory role of HSE professionals required updates along with technical support in terms of the provision of an overall HSE Management System. The absence of defined HSE Standards created a void in the consistent implementation of HSE Polices. The short term view was considered a transition and managed with the utmost care, ensuring that there was no dilution of HSE responsibilities. Leadership focused on demanding the implementation of existing site procedures with a commitment which is de-

monstrable. Lotte PPTA Management has taken this unique initiative to provide the Line Management with the ability to respond to HSE demands and challenges. The task was assigned to Mr. Qamar H. Manzoor (GM Manufacturing) and Mr. Tariq Mehdi (HSE & Technical Training Manager) to explore options to internalize the current Lotte PPTA HSE Management System with Internationally recognized systems in order to stay up to date with changing global practices. otte PPTA enters 2012 and what a start to the year we have had. The OHSAS certification is, without doubt, the highlight of the year so far. This certification testifies to our commitment and strict adherence towards HSE policies. Lotte PPTA also reached the landmark of 10 million man-hours without LTC for its employees. This milestone can duly be credited to the discipline shown by all employees. For a second year in succession, Lotte PPTA extended its support to the Family Education Services (FESF), in organizing a Children’s Benefit concert which entertained approximately 5000 underprivileged and special children from across Karachi all day. Earlier in the year, Lotte PPTA also established a base in the city center with its new city office located on main Shahra-eFaisal, Karachi. I am also pleased to present our new editorial board which includes Arif Raza, Abdus Samad, Urooj Fatima and Khurram Qureshi. I thank my team for all the support they have provided. Lastly, the editorial team presents the newly designed “Life @ Lotte PPTA” newsletter. We hope you all like the new format. evenue for the quarter was 16% lower than the corresponding period last year, mainly due to lower PTA prices. Gross profit for the quarter was significantly lower than the same period last year due to lower revenue and higher Px prices. As a result, PTA margin over Px came down by 66% as compared to the same period last year. Distribution and selling expenses for the quarter were higher than the corresponding quarter last year mainly due to higher export sales. Other operating expenses were lower than the corresponding quarter last year mainly due to lower

charges for Workers’ Profit Participation and Workers’ Welfare Funds due to lower operating profit. Finance income was lower than January 2011 as a result of a reduction in average cash surplus levels on the back of lower cash generation. The taxation charge for the quarter is based on minimum turnover tax as reduced by the movement in the deferred tax account. As a result of the above, the company generated profit before taxation of Rs 238 million compared to Rs 3,696 million in January last year.

After extensive research, the task for certification was assigned to URS (a UK-based certification organization). Based on a three step process, the initial assessment of Lotte PPTA’s HSE Management System was carried out by the URS team on September 19 2011 and an action plan based on a Gap Analysis was developed. Lotte PPTA’s Management successfully completed the actions within the

minimum allotted time to address the highlighted gaps. The pre-certification assessment was carried out on 21-22 October 2011. After the second assessment, the final external audit was conducted on 15-16 February 2012 for the certification of OHSAS 18001 & ISO 14001. The external audit team appreciated the HSE Management System and recommended Lotte PPTA for the certification. Lotte PPTA, already a leading organization in the petrochemical sec-

tor, now holds the highest standards and excellent safety records in Health, Safety and Environmental performance in all its operations. Lotte PPTA Chief Executive and Senior Management congratulated the task team, which included Mr. Qamar H Manzoor, Mr. Tariq Mehdi, Mr. Mudussar Sharif (Process Development & Lab. Manager) Mr. Shuaib Iqbal (HSE Coordinator) and Mr. Mansoor Ahmed (ISO Coordinator) for their continuous efforts and excellent coordination to complete the task within a 6 month span.

10 million man-hours of Lotte PPTA employees without LTC L

otte Pakistan PTA Limited achieved the milestone of 10 million man-hours of its employees without LTC (Lost Time Case) on January 11, 2012. On achieving this milestone, Mr. Asif Saad congratulated Lotte PPTA’s management and non-management staff, saying, “A great way to begin the new year. I would like to thank everyone at Lotte PPTA for their commitment to this cause. This could not have been done without great teamwork and the responsibility shown

by each and every individual. We are proud of this achievement and hope to keep up this record of excellence in HSE in the future.” This achievement came about due to the successful implementation of HSE policies, procedures, training and above all, the commitment of all Lotte PPTA employees towards safety at all levels. This was not possible without the attitude of workers at an operating level towards a safer system of work. The effort of line managers and their

teams is highly commendable for their continuing vigilance of safe work practices. Management maintains a strong focus on Health, Safety and Environment and defines our standards and success criteria for the future. As a reward for their adherence to Lotte’s safe work practices, Lotte PPTA employees were awarded coupons for shopping either from Hyperstar or Habitt as per their choice. The only option available for the Instrument team was to attempt to repair the HMI unit themselves. Nadeem Bhatti took this as a challenge and evaluated the options for in-house repair. Full support was extended to him by Basharat Hussain and Muhammad Umer, Electronic Technician. They explored local markets to procure an alternate LCD and its parts and modify its electronic circuitry to make it compat-

ariable Speed Drives (VSDs) of Cooling Tower fans were in operation throughout the year despite the fact that the fans were operating at 50Hz during summer seasons. The electrical team came up with an innovative solution to install changeover switches on Cooling Tower fan motors C1-2400 A/B/C/D to bypass VSDs during the summer and take them back in operation during the winter, when a change in fan speed is required. This innovative solution has not only optimized the operation of VSDs but will also result in cost-saving with a reduction in VSD maintenance and the elimination of VSD energy losses. In addition, the inherent problem of overheating in these VSDs is

also overcome as they will not be in operation during the summer. The previous year’s ventilation was improved for these VSDs by installing additional draft fans, perforating the cabinet and relocating the components of VSDs within the cabinet for better cooling. The most important part of the solution was designing and commissioning the control logic to enable VSD operation or bypass it without avoiding protections of the equipment. A good job was done by Waqas Alam, M. Kamran Khan, Hasan Kazmi and Raza Anis for the design and executing the job during the winter season as turning off the Cooling Tower fans is not possible in the summer.

esponding to the expectations of the business, the Utilities maintenance team recently took a number of initiatives that resulted in significant savings for the business. On the Lookout for Initiatives T he maintenance team is continuously on the lookout for new initiatives which not only result in cost savings but also in saving critical time and effort. The same was proved by the recent developments carried out by maintenance team with the support of workshop personnel. One of them is the in-house development of a trolley for HP Jetting machine using discarded structure materials. Due to this wonderful development, the HP jetting machine, which previously required an FLT or tractor for movement, can be moved manually now. This has greatly enhanced flexibility since the movement of the jetting machine is no

longer dependent on other equipment and trade. Other in-house developments include development of SAVs machine’s pulley and shaft using inhouse workshop resources. This has not only saved cost of procurement from foreign OEMs but also reduced the extensive time required to procure the same from abroad. By carrying out these developments through the workshop team, a saving of Rs. 0.75 Mn has been realized by the maintenance team of the Purification Plant.

mumps Clinical manifestations of mumps Classic symptoms: Unilateral or bilateral inflammation of the parotid glands (parotitis) which affects 50% of all patients and develops mostly 16 -18 days after exposure. Swelling first becomes noticeable in front of the lower part of the ear. This swelling extends downwards and forwards as fluid accumulates in the skin and soft tissue of the face and neck. R Swelling may also occur in the submandibular and sublingual glands in a small percentage of patients. Non-specific symptoms which may precede the swelling and inflammation of the parotid gland by several days: R Myalgia (muscular pain) R Anorexia (loss of appetite) R Malaise R Headache R Low-grade fever 40%-50% of mumps cases are associated with non-specific symptoms or primarily respiratory problems. This is usually the case in children less than 5 years of age. Only 30%-40% of mumps cases present with the typical swelling and inflammation of the parotid glands. 15%20% cases are asymptomatic. R

Vaccination – The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is routinely given to children at the age of 12-15 months, with a second dose at 4-6 years of age. Minimize contact with other people especially babies and people with weak immune systems who cannot be vaccinated. Take sick leave from work or school for 5 days after the glands begin to swell and stay away from other house-members. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing and throw the tissue in a trash can. Where a tissue is not available cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow. Wash your hands and the hands of your children with soap and water as well and as often as you can. Don’t eat from the same plate or drink from the same glass as the patient. Use soap and water or alcohol containing swipes to regularly clean surfaces that are touched frequently by the patient e.g. toys, doorknobs, tables and desks.
