Distribution: Central South America
Titis prefer dense rainforest near to water. They come from Peru and Brazil in South America.
Habitat: Tropical Forest Height: 32 - 34cm Weight: 1200g - 1500g Diet: Omnivorous Fruit, leaves, insects.
Their diet consists mostly of fruit, but they will also eat leaves, flowers, eggs, insects and small vertebrates. Titis are monogamous, mating for life. The female gives birth to a single baby after a 5 month pregnancy. Often it is the father who cares for the young, carrying it and bringing it to the mother only for nursing. The young are weaned after 5 months and are fully grown after two years. When they are about 3 years old they will leave the family group to search for their own mate. Their life expectancy is up to 12 years in the wild. Titis are territorial. They live in family groups, of parents and their offspring, usually about three to seven animals. They defend their territory by calling and chasing off intruders. They groom each other, this and communication is important for the co-operation of the group. They can typically be seen in pairs sitting or sleeping with tails entwined.
