Jakarta International Humanity Foundation
The Jakarta International Humanity Foundation (IHF) is both an orphanage and an educational centre where free English, computing and mathematics classes are available for children. Volunteers can teach; make and distribute IHF pamphlets, posters and donation jars; work on the advisory council; write sponsor letters; collect school supplies; help with civic groups; and get involved with a slum outreach program. If you are willing to help, you just have to fill out a form on their website and you can choose to volunteer from home or stay at the IHF centre, where costs for meals and board will be applied. IHF has had volunteers from Australia, the United States and Lithuania, and they are expecting more volunteers to arrive in April. Are you one of them? Greenpeace
Greenpeace’s goal is ‘to ensure the ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity’. Greenpeace uses direct action, lobbying and research to achieve this goal. The organisation is currently focusing on global warming, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling and nuclear power. There is a lot to be done in protecting the planet for future generations, and help is always welcome, from envelope-stuffing to jungle survival training. Many of the folks who work in their offices today started out as volunteers. You can register on the Greenpeace website as a volunteer and an interview will be scheduled for you. The skills needed depend on the campaign, and volunteers are free to decide which campaign they want to be involved in. Training for non-violence action to become an activist will be provided. Jakarta Animal Aid Network
The Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) is committed to improving the lives of wild and domestic animals, and to encourage active community support and involvement in animal welfare in Jakarta. Their program involves aid for caddy horses and siamangs, community development, domestic animal adoption, the rescue and re-introduction of brahminy kite birds, as well as the preservation of marine ecosystems and primate sanctuaries. FMCH
The Foundation for Mother and Child Health (FMCH) aims to eliminate malnutrition and causes of poverty in local communities to improve the health, nutrition and
education standards of Indonesian children under 5. It also aims to improve the health, education and earning power of their mothers. Anyone can volunteer, but the organisation is in great need of people with nursing, fundraising, midwifery or health experience. Visiting experience is also a plus. There is also room for nutritionists, pre-school and primary school teachers, writers and journalist. People in IT could be of help, as well as anyone with sewing skills. If you think you’re the right person to volunteer for FMCH, visit their website and fill out the application form. They will get in touch with you as soon as possible.
Yayasan Mitra Netra (YMN) is a non-profit organisation that aims to reduce the impact of blindness by developing knowledge and improving skills for the visually impaired. YMN’s latest program is 1,000 Books for the Visually Impaired, which aims to make more books available in Braille. So, if you consider yourself a fast typist, spend a little time to type up your favourite book or a book from their list and YMN will print it in Braille and distribute it to the visually impaired through their networks. April Festival Goethe Haus, Taman Ismail Marzuki and Cakung Industrial Estate Tue 13–Tue 27 April, which happens to be the birth month of Kartini, Indonesian’s first feminist, is a perfect month for Insitut Ungu to hold a festival to celebrate women’s accomplishments, to engage in self-evaluation and reflection, to identify concerns and struggles that lie ahead, and to impart messages of their own to the public, especially young women. April Festival 2010 will be the second edition of the festival after their first event in 2003, and it will feature the theme ‘Raising Women’s Voices’ with a focus on women’s liberation, diversity and the role of the younger generation. Taking place at Goethe Haus, the April Festival will presenting a wide variety of performance by women, such as traditional dance, music, theatre, oration, poetry reading, and also discussions related to ‘Women and Art’ with
famed female artists such as like Tika Jahja, Atiqah Hasiholan, Rhoma Dwi Arya Yuliantri, Astrid Septriana, Donny Gahral Adian discussing their opinions. If performance is not your cup of tea, then you should check out their movie screening schedule (Sat 17-Mon 19) . Be sure to see ‘Pertaruhan’ a collective documenterary about female body issues, ‘Jamila dan Sang Presiden’ a movie about a woman who refused amnesty from the president, and ‘Perempuan Berkalung Sorban’ a story about how Muslim women are often placed into difficult condition.
