Jakarta best dive sites

Sink and swim There’s millions of fish and other sea creatures to see around Pulau Seribu

Tyara Putri uncovers several places near the city for new underwater experiences. Photography by Dissy Ekapramudita With a string of 110 islands, the rather misleadingly named Pulau Seribu (Thousand Islands) offer many excellent spots for your next diving trip.

Pramuka Island

Marine life: Napoleon wreck diving is one of Pramuka Island’s best dive sites. Here you can find interesting coral and a variety of beautiful fish, including blue damsel, trumpet, parrot, angel and porcupine, as well as a number of turtles. You may look, but don’t touch or take anything, as these areas are protected and the conservation policy prevents human influence on the ecosystem. Accommodation: There are several homestays and lodging that are strategically located on the seaside (Villa Delima, 021 543

73149). One thing to bear in mind is that the electricity is turned off every morning at 7am and turned on in the afternoon at around 5.30pm. How to get there: Boats to Pramuka Island leave daily from Marina Ancol (pier 21) at 8 am and from Pramuka Island at 1pm.

Sepa Island

Marine life: Featuring outstanding white sandy beaches for sun tanning, turquoise waters and coral reef formations teeming with interesting marine life, Sepa Island is popularly known as a paradise for divers. Dive equipment rental is available at Sepa Dive Shop, which guarantees all equipment is in good condition and has full-time experienced certified dive buddies on staff. Accommodation: On Sepa Island there are four types of cottages, ranging from cheap to expensive with various facilities (Pulau Seribu Wisata, 021 6827 4005) How to get there: Reaching Sepa by cruiser can be done in one and a half hours. Boats to Sepa from

Marina Ancol (pier 19) leave at 8am, with return trips from Sepa to Marina Ancol at 2pm everyday.

Papa Theo Island

Marine life: This island features a simple wreck dive with lots of marine life and occasional sharks in the deep water at the stern of the ship that sank at the reef back in 1979. The depth is 20-28 metre and parrotfish, groupers, moray eels and stingrays can be seen around this site. The northern end of this island is often chosen as a night dive site. The best time to visit the wreck is during March and May, when the current is gentle and visibility is at least 10 metres. Accommodation: Expect the most basic of accommodation on these isles, thatched cottages on the beach are limited to five bungalows. You are expected to bring your own food and drink supplies, and since they don’t have any restaurants on the island (Papa Theo Resort, 021 683 996) How to get there: There’s no direct boat to Papa Theo Island, but you can take small boat from

Pramuka Island. The trip is about three hours.

Kotok Island

Marine life: This island offers the most interesting coral life in the area. The west and north ends of the island feature the best dives (20 metres) because they face the open sea. Schools of sweetlips, turtles and sharks inhabit the waters here. Small manta rays have been seen here, and there is an abundance of gorgonians and soft coral. Accommodation: Clean and affordable bungalows are available at Alam Kotok. Unlike most of the the Thousand Islands, where housing is limited to bungalows and lodges, Alam Kotok provides hotels and restaurants where you can have breakfast, lunch, dinner. (Alam Kotok Island Resort, 021 428 01932) How to get there: Boats leave daily at 8am from Marina Ancol. You need to show up at least 30 minutes prior to departure at pier 15. From Kotok Island to Ancol Marina, the boats leave at 2.30pm on weekdays and 3.30pm on weekends.

Assembly Hall Jakarta Convention Centre (JCC) Thu 4 – Sun 7 The Japan Foundation will be introducing furoshiki, an ecofriendly wrapping cloth, at the Eco-Product International Fair. Furoshiki has been used by the Japanese for hundreds of years. Some believe that furoshiki has been used since the Muromachi period, when Shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga built an ooyudono (a large bathhouse) to entertain highranking officials. The officials used to wrap their own clothes with furoshiki, which also serve as a kind of floor cover when they wanted to change clothes. The practice began to work its way down to the commoners, especially after bathhouses became more popular. In today’s enviromentally conscious world, furoshiki has seen a

resurgance, particularly because it can be used repeatedly and effectively, reducing the use of plastic bags. Using techniques similar to origami, you can use furoshiki for gift-wrapping, grocery shopping, as décor or even fashionable attire, as its versatility allows you to wrap it around almost anything, regardless of its shape or size. This four-days exhibition will include of furoshiki exhibitions and workshops with speakers from Japan. Admission to the workshop is free, but space is limited to 60 people per session, so be sure to register at the Japan Foundation office. Mar 3

Sport & Outdoors Out and loving it Around Town

Yes, there are plenty of modern, high-tech comfortable gyms in the city. But sometimes we just want to work up a sweat out in the sun while getting a dose of fresh air (plus, exercising outdoors is free!). Believe it or not, the Big Durian actually has a number of public spaces for you to get sweaty and healthy. By Erfanintya

Taman Monas

Lapangan Merdeka The 80 hectares surrounding the National Monument have everything you need to keep in shape: the long jogging track along the trees at the National Monument, the push-up, pull-up and sit-up bars, a basketball court, a volleyball court and four futsal courts. All of these facilities are in a good condition. Visitors rarely use the bars (maybe they don’t know what they’re actually meant for) and the jogging track is nice, but you don’t even really need it, since the park alone can be your jogging place. It gets very crowded in the evenings (and some nights), especially the futsal courts, but hey, it’s all free!

Taman Menteng Jl. M Yamin, Menteng

If Taman Monas is a little too big and central for you, wander over to Taman Menteng. Formerly known as Persija Stadium, it has similar facilities to Monas Park, except the workout bars, in a smaller area. Its two futsal courts, a volleyball court and a half basketball court may not be in the best conditions, but they’re good enough for the price (free!). Anyone can join in on the fun with other groups and participate in some healthy open competition. It is packed with people on Saturday and Sunday mornings. You can even ride around on your bike, as the path is smooth,
