Become the next James Cameron with your camera Have you ever wanted to make a family documentary, short indie movie or music video for your band but worried about the cost of getting a new video camera? A DSLR camera can be a sweet alternative for short movie makers. Tyara Putri doles out tips and gear recommendations for making awesome HD videos with DSLR cameras Camera with HD video 1DSLR recording

The advantage of experimenting with DSLR cameras are cheaper lenses (with great depth-of-field), simplicity and their relative user-friendliness compared to many HD video cameras. The Canon EOS 7D (JPC Kemang, Rp. 12,518,000 body only) is one of the best midrange DSLR cameras for shooting video since it was the first Canon DSLR to capture 23.98 fps (frames per second) progressive, which is the same speed as standard film projection. It also has excellent image quality, flexible autofocus system, big bright viewfinder, and wireless flash control. For other brands, you can deliver the money for Sony A560 or Nikon D300s.

2 Focus on the right lenses

You’ll want to look for lenses with big F stops. If Canon is your religion, then you can go for the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (JPC Kemang, Rp. 11,982,000), it’s a great all around lens for full frame sensor cameras. It’s sharp, versatile, fast focusing and very well built. This lens has the ability to capture in ultra-wide angle 24mm which makes it ideal for digital as well as film shooters, not to mention the outstanding optics via its two Aspherical elements and a new UD glass element. If you’re using a Sony camera, you can use the 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T (JPC Kemang, Rp. 15,419,000) or AF-S 24-70mm f/2.86 ED (JPC Kemang, Rp. 16,339,000) for your Nikon DSLR.

3 Massive memory

As you can guess, HD quality movies take up plenty of space on your memory card, so

you’ll need either high-capacity media or several memory cards handy in your bag. The ideal memory cards are those with high transfer rates, let’s say, 90mb per second is good for video shooting. Sandisk Extreme Pro 64Gb (JPC Kemang, Rp. 5,995,000) is a memory card that’s fast enough to keep up with your advanced DSLR, and with up to 64Gb of storage, you’ll be ready for more RAW, JPEG and high-def video. Though it delivers professional performance, please note that not all cameras can support 64Gb capacity compact flash cards.

editing for beginners and 4Video pros

There are plenty of editing programs that you can use to turn your raw footage into a fantastic flick. For professional results, you’ll want to go with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, Final Cut Pro, or Avid Composer. Adobe Premiere is probably the most well-known video editing software these days. The latest version of Adobe Premiere PRO has added RED format support and smooth integration with Photoshop, Soundbooth and After Effects. It’s a bit faster than Final Cut Pro and it works on both operating systems. Note that these programs take a while to learn. As an alternative, there’s always freeware options like iMovie for Macs or Microsoft Movie Maker for the PC. These two are probably the easiest to use video editing software programmes available, and they can still deliver quite polished results.

3

5 Editing room on the go

Digital video editing is an intensive process that requires a computer that’s capable of handling memory-busting workloads. Mac or PC, desktop or laptop, it should be a problem as long as the computer you’re working with has sufficient RAM (at least 2Gb) and it has the latest graphics and audio cards to support real-time video editing. The computer should also have a Firewire input, also called IEEE 1394 or iLink, to transfer your video quickly. A USB 2.0 port will also work in place of Firewire, but isn’t as fast and doesn’t give you as many options for connecting external devices to the computer.

6

6 What about audio?

If you want to use a microphone for your DSLR, you can try Rode Video Shotgun NTG-2 (www.deltamusik.com, Rp. 3,300,000) or Sennheiser MKE400 (JPC Kemang, Rp.2,772,000). The MKE 400 is a very rugged, versatile microphone designed for great video sound. Its compact and lightweight design makes it the perfect companion for modern camcorders. The MKE 400 is simply attached to the camcorder shoe mount and connected to the external microphone input. For cameras without an accessory shoe, there are shoe adapters commercially available that enable the microphone to be fitted directly onto the side of the camcorder.

Suedehead by Ida Bagus Aris Ishak Widiarsa and Gusti Ayu Dui Sudarwa influences, from the eclectic dance punk of Ian Division to the metal judgement of Motorhead, they are tying to break into the fashion industry with a mix of local pride and faith in a brighter future. Why we like it?

What is it? Suedehead is a shoe line that specialises in unisex boots made from suede that are comfortable and quirky at the same time. Some of the shoes in this collection have a cool leopard, zebra or other animal prints on the inside, with neutral plain colours on the outside. How did it start? Suedehead was, in Ida and Gusti’s words, ‘born from a man who loves God and a woman with a mind full of fashion ideology’. Together they started the shoe business back in mid 2008. With strong musical and subcultural

Suedehead got our attention since the very first time we saw their shoes, and we’ve witnessed this couple make great progress with their product designs, both in terms of material and the overall collection. Though they don’t accept custom orders for designs, they do make custom sized shoes for those with feet size 45 and above. Other than that, we like Suedehead for their persistence in selecting great shoe fabrics with excellent quality. It’s no wonder that, to dat,e they have sold more than 1,000 pairs and have reseller stores in Bali, Jakarta, Jogjakarta, the United States and France. Where can we get Suedehead? For Jakartans, Suedehead is available exclusively at Soled Store, Jl. Panglima Polim V, no. 23 with prices ranging from Rp.450,000 – Rp. 2,000,000. To see their complete collection, you can also check out their website www. godspeedsuedehead.com. Tyara Putri

Jeffrey Campbell Finally, we don’t have to search high and low for a pair of Jeffrey Cambell shoes anymore! Campbell’s footwear has popping up in high concept boutiques and on the shelves of top retailers across the continent, and now we can grab his amazing Mary Rocks lace-up platform wedges, Ninety Nine black ankle high bootie, the wooden wedge Snick Stud and the Belgium black leather peep toe wedge (Rp.1,625,000-Rp.1,825,000) at Tribute. (See Hotshops for details)

Last month, Voila and Soled, Jakarta’s newest consignment store, opened it’s door. About a month before they finally launched, in collaboration with Studio 13, the team made a campaign called ‘The Pink Moustache’ to get the Facebookers attention. The Pink Moustache campaign requires you to put on a, of course, pink moustache on your Facebook profile picture as a sign of your participation and to score an invitation to the opening night. Studio 13 is also responsible

for the store design. Standing across from another concept store, LOT 36, Voila and Soled looks outstanding with its neat and minimalist interiors in white dominant colours. Voila carries a wide range of women’s local brands made up of such notable names as Vahada, Lilou, Ruph, Douche, Never Understand, Proud Parents, Screaming Cheap, Utee and Terror wooden jewellery, while Soled is a shoe store that provides various selections of footwear made by young and emerging Indonesian shoemakers with renowned brands like Amble, Naima, Suedehead and MLN. Both stores feature collections that are just too tempting. Why is it that in a city like Jakarta, we never seem to run out of new places to spend our money? Made in Indonesia Since Always by Resida Irmine

How did you get into fashion design? I‘ve always wanted to be in this industry and be a designer. As simple as that. What inspires you? SHOES, SHOES and SHOES. Seeing somebody’s vintage closet and reading interviews with successful people. After seeing your debut collection, ‘Separatiz’, that featured monochrome pieces with edgy cutting, this third collection seems to be more femininem with softer colours. How would you describe your current collection, ‘Adaptare’? Since it’s a summer collection, I was really inspired by how French men dressed up and adapted the Japanese cut; I think it is such a perfect collaboration.

Could you give us a briefing on what’s in and out on this season? In: Leopard, ‘Mad Man’ retro style things, boyish shoes (loafers, lace up flats), lace, and velvet. Out: Rolled over pants, especially for men, pastel colours, clogs, and overpriced basic tees. What do you do during the day? Eat, pray, love. We’ve heard about your former label, Proud Parents. What makes it different from Since Always and how do you manage those two? Proud Parents was my collaboration between myself, Muqliza Imroni (Sou Brette) and AOD. Since Always is now my current full time project, which I think is more mature and selfish. Do you have any advice for young women that want to be fashion designers? Find your identity and be strong. There’s some tough competition out there. Got any project coming up soon? Jakarta Fashion Week in November plus some secret projects going on. Tyara Putri

Caviar line by Skin Food

Marks & Spencer Bazaar Central Park Mall, Ground floor, Jl. Letjen S Parman, kav. 28. Enjoy up to 70% off on Marks & Spencer’s women, men and kids collections.

What it is: Skin Food Gold Caviar Line What it claims: A comprehensive line of skin care cosmetic that combines Russian caviar from sturgeons that have lived for more than 100 years with pure 24-karat gold to provide nutrition, elasticity and fortification to your skin, as well as an anti-aging ingredient, adenosine, to reduce wrinkles. How it works: Their are five parts to this luxury line of cosmetics. You start by applying the toner after your regular cleansing. Gently press with your palm so your skin absorbs the toner fully. Then, apply the eye lifting serum evenly around the delicate eye area, followed by the serum. The anti-aging action of the caviar extract and gold in this comprehensive-care serum will help counter wrinkles and moisten, nourish, firm up, and fortify your skin. The next step is applying the emulsion to help moisturise and revitalise the skin. Which brings us to the last step, applying the cream. Formulated with caviar and gold and providing anti-aging and cellular-renewal effects, the gold caviar cream claims to make your skin firm and moist. What we say: Three is a crowd, five is just too much. We think that a five step skin treatment regime (which doesn’t even count the initial cleansing), is way too complicated. Not to mention a pain for everyday use. But if that’s the price to avoid wrinkles, then ask us again in ten years to see if we really think its worth it. Our rating: 2/5 Cost: Toner (Rp.347,000), emulsion (Rp.347,000), serum (Rp.402,500), cream (Rp.402,500), eyelifting serum (Rp.402,500), nutrient mask (Rp.53,000).
