n a beautiful thursday morning in October, Ardhia Pramesti Regita Cahyani, many referring to her simply as Tata, invited us to have breakfast with her at the exclusive Bengawan restaurant of The Keraton at The Plaza, Jakarta. The mother of Darma Mangkuluhur Hutomo (Darma) and Radhyana Gayanti Hutami (Aya) says she has travelled a lot lately for work, yet always finds time to balance her life as a parent and an entrepreneur. Tata co-owns the jewellery line Diamond Addiction, which she set up with her partner two years ago. “Through travelling, I got to know many talented people, including designers, and found the opportunity to venture into the business. That was how the company was set up.” Diamond Addiction is now the umbrella of some of the world’s finest diamond brands, such as Scarselli Diamonds from New York, Noah Barcelona from Spain, and fashion jewelleries specialising in coloured gems, such as Tippy-Tippy and The Little Pink Rabbit from Thailand. “Currently we are working with a team of jewellery designers from Thailand to produce an exclusive line of rings, Carmel by Diamond Addiction.” Despite her tight schedule, Tata always considers family a number-one priority. “I enjoy being a mother, and it’s very important for us, parents, to become their role models and convince them to have a dream in life, and chase it.” When Tata isn’t out taking care of the business, she spends time baking some cookies with the kids. “I’m not an expert in the kitchen, but I give credits to my daughter, Aya, who loves to bake and experiment. We sometimes bake muffins, cupcakes, brownies, and flan. She’s really good at it and makes me fond of spending some time in the kitchen.” Tata also takes pride in Aya‘s skill at mastering foreign languages fast. “She is fluent in English, Mandarin, and Spanish, and she’ll be learning Japanese next year. Learning foreign languages is important, as it brings one closer to other cultures and the world. I always tell the kids the languages they have and will have mastered will one day be a very handy means to introduce and promote Indonesia to other people.” But Tata admits that despite all the international influences on the children, she still stresses the importance of their Javanese indonesia tatler

“I like reading books, especially books about women who have made a difference in history” background. Tata herself comes from the Mangkunegaran royal family of Surakarta, Central Java. As much as she enjoys baking and cooking in the kitchen with Aya, the mother also loves watching F1 racing with her son, Darma. “We are both fans of F1, and we would watch the races together whenever we had time.” Darma, the eldest child, is a professional go-kart racer who competes in all over Asian countries and is currently leading in the Asian Karting Open Championship (AKOC) junior. “I hope that he will win the AKOC 2012 Champion title, as it will set a milestone in his racing career.” Tata also shares with us a tip to help us beat our stress. “Make time for yourself. It’s important to have a ‘me time’, even if it’s only

30 minutes a day, to reflect on the positives and negatives in life, and to re-balance ourselves before we start re-taking the roles of a mother, wife, and daughter.” “I also like reading books, especially books about women who have made a difference in history, about how they have turned oppressions into opportunities. These are ordinary women and daughters but are extraordinarily brave and strong individuals.” Tata said she just finished reading I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali, and is currently reading Half the Sky: How To Change The World by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl Wudunn. She is also collaborating with author Fifi Kartikawati, both working on a coffee-table book, set to launch this year.
