COFFEE GO’AROUND

EUNICE KIM

INTRODUCTION Take a familiar material and manipulate to become something unexpected. The resulting material must be either sustainable or must reuse a product or waste from manufaturing. Be innovative and forward-thinking. This is a material for the future.

WHY COFFEE GROUNDS? - Most adults have tasted coffee - 54 % of Americans over 18 drink coffee every day - Average coffee shop throws out around 22 pounds of coffee used grounds a day - 54 thousand coffee shop established in 2015 - Majority goes to a landfill I, however, believe that these grounds have potential for a new life and can be used to produce new materials.

SOURCE OF COFFEE GROUNDS

- Local coffee shops will provides free coffee grounds - Starbucks, Panera, Sweet waters, and Song birds for collecting coffee grounds (Ann Arbor, MI)

CONCEPT OF COFFEE GO’AROUND The texture, aroma, color and taste of coffee is authentic and rich. My surface concept is to change the original characteristics of coffee grounds to have a different quality. The original features of coffee grounds are earthy, brittle, wet, acidity, exotic, powdery and complex. The new material will be soft, smooth, rubbery, formable, and solid. As I manipulate the surface of the coffee grounds, I want to keep the scent of coffee so that people can notice by one of their sense to recognize the basic ingredient even though the appearance is completely different.
