DISASTER SHELTER DESIGN
DISASTER SHELTER DESIGN
Disaster shelter design will be used at Chicago, Navy Pier. In the past Chicago experienced several natural disasters such as snow storm, fire, and wind storms. To begin with the project, I started with accessory design with can be used during any disaster. After that I design seating for people and finally come to a shelter design for a person. One shelter can expand for group and family shelters when it is expanded and combined together.

The main concept of the shelter derived from previous projects which are accessory and seating design. The pulling movement on scarf and stretching actions on the seating fabric developed into the final shelter structure.

Sleeping
Seating accessory can attached to the shelter structure to have sitting and sleeping functions. When the structural frame is folded it can be used as sitting, when it is stretched out it can be used as sleeping.
SPACE EXPANSION
As people stretch and pull the structures, the space that create inside will become larger.

Canvas Strips
White Opaque Fabric
A material for a shelter, I decided to use light and structured materials to give firm and easily construable. The materials are translucent fabric so that when people are inside, they can see through silhouette. I also used canvas strip which is stronger than cotton fabrics. It has tight and firm fabrics. For the fan structure, I decided to choose white opaque fabric since it is soft and durable to create space.

A stretchable and fashionable seating design can attached onto the shelter structure for seating inside the shelter. It can be sleeping spot for people who don’t want to sleep on the floor. By adding the element it gives more comforts. When two shelters are placed side by side, it will have more space for couple. Either side of the fan is still packed inside.
