IMM® is an International and multidisciplinary Design Laboratory for Urban Sustainability. Our work is driven by the principle that urban design can directly affect the quality of our environment, improve the energy performances as well as the quality of our lives making our future more sustainable and responsible. IMM® is the acronym of Integrated Modification Methodology, an innovative design methodology based on a specific process with the main goal of improving the CAS’ (complex adaptive systems) energy performance, through the modification of its constituents and optimization the architecture of their ligands. Its approach is fundamentally Holistic, Multi-Layer, Multi-scale. In this methodology, the city is considered

to be a dynamic Complex. Adaptive System comprised of the superimposition of an enormous number of interrelated components, categorized in different Layers or ‘Subsystems’, (also complex adaptive systems) which through their inner arrangement and the architecture of their ligands provide a certain physical and provisional arrangement of the CAS. The IMM® investigates the relationships between urban morphology and energy consumption by focusing mostly on the ‘Subsystems’ characterized by physical characters and arrangement; hence, the text casts spotlight on IMM phasing process. The main object of this design process is to address a more sustainable and better performing urban arrangement.

the IMM® OPPORTUNITY OUR PROPOSAL According to this theory, the city, is not solely a mere aggregation of disconnected energy consumers and the total energy consumption of the city is different from the sum of the whole building’s consumption. “The whole is more than the sum of its parts”. This theory considers the city as a complex adaptive system. Furthermore it sketches out the relationships between urban morphology and energy consumption, providing some new basic design principles to re-shape urban assessment, as well as designing new sustainable neighborhoods as an integrated part of the city. the IMM® OPPORTUNITY

IMM® focus on energy-efficient organisations, monitoring and management of urban areas (neighbourhoods) and adopting IMM® as a system-theoretical and trans-disciplinary paradigm. The Centre is engaged in national and international activities, working closely with leading financial, business, city institutions, professionals, stakeholders and decisionmakers in order to provide them with a fully integrated design solutions. IMM® methodology shows how incorporating a wide range of issues makes it possible to improve the metabolism of the city as well as its environmental and energy performances. Integrated within the IMM®, and parallel to its different constituent phases, a transversal crosscheck will optimize some of the different case studies by testing the territorial organization of the studied urban fabrics (Streetscape Territories Research Project). A complex problem, sustainable urban development, requires holistic solutions; an interdisciplinary collaboration staff and a broad spectrum of scientists, such as engineers, architects, urban planners as well as economists, social scientists drawn on the diverse expertise of our research team.

In this meaning the Design Ordering Principles (DOPs) are tools/instruments used to arrange the structure of the city (CAS). Again, the way in which these principles are applied affects its structure and performance. Applying the DOP (Design Ordering Principles) is a fundamental stage of the IMM Phasing process and a way for directing the modification process of the CAS towards more sustainable and efficient form. It is really important to note that the 10 DOPs are associated with the 10 Indicators used for the estimation of the actual Energy performance of the CAS as well as for the CAS Retrofitting process.

CONNECTIVITY POROSITY PROXIMITY DIVERSITY INTERFACE EFFICIENCY ACCESSIBILITY CREATIVE/INNOVATIVE

Urban design principle should address the challenges in a comprehensive way, facilitating the conciliation between development and sustainability. The most challenging project for any city is to address both its competitive status and its ecological stewardship. Energy, Infrastructure, Environment seem to be the new key factors for reaching a sustainable development as well as to better off the quality of contemporary urban life. “The built environment influences how people relate to each other, the opportunity for community to form, and the depth of our social networks. It regulates how much incidental exercise is possible through walking and biking”. IMM® methodology goes beyond the usual master planning activity as making of physical plans. It ensures a city able to combine economic development, quality of life, and culture with a strong sense of responsibility towards the environment. A city able to apply the most advanced manufacturing technologies for energy efficiency and emissions cutting and able to deliver global and societal wellbeing within the context of low carbon living and resource security.

Objective 1

TO MAKE THE CITY MORE COMPETITIVE AND ATRACTIVE IN A WORLD SCENARIO.

“Technological innovation and creativity are indispensable for ensuring future of cities. The promotion of creativity and innovation are central for urban development Strategy. Integratating science and technology into an innovative urban environment. Cities need one or more of the following features in their location to be competitive: (1) Attractive factor conditions, especially for labor; (2) large or growing and well-functioning product markets; and (3) a conducive investment climate; (4) Environment supporting innovation and R&D.

Sustainable development is not just about the physical environment, but about the economy, society and cultures as well, and how addressing each, with bold ideas and good governance, will result in better outcomes now and for future communities. It means: - economic orientation, global in links and knowledge exchange, global and open-minded in outlook. - environmental implementation, defining a new urban network of open green spaces.

Objective 2

TO MAKE THE CITY MORE SUSTAINABLE AND LIVEABLE.

The concept of a more sustainable and energy efficient urban environment is based on a holistic approach with the consideration of the city as a complex adaptive system with the ability to learn from past encountered conditions. Thus, the city is an energy-using complex system in its own right, with its own varying levels of efficiency and not just a mere aggregation of disconnected energy consumers, and the total energy consumption of the city is different than the sum of all the building’s consumption. This considerable gap between total energy consumption of the city and sum of all consumers is concealed in the urban morphology transformation toward a sustainable form has come into its own, due to its ability to tackle both environmental as well as urban growth problems simultaneously.

Objective 3

TO MAKE THE CITY MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT.

the IMMŽ OPPORTUNITY Our services More than half the world’s population now lives in cities, a percentage that is expected to rise to an astonishing 70% by 2030, with cities already being responsible for over 75% of global CO2 emissions. Within this scenario, urban design and planning play a strategic role for the optimal sustainable performance of a new city environment. This rapid urbanisation trend is irreversible and it has been clearly demonstrated in studies and projections by several private research groups, universities, governmental bodies, Think Tanks, the United Nations and the World Bank. Bust fast urbanisation that is going to be highly pronounced in developing nations, need to be transformed in a development opportunity. IMMŽ as a multistage, iterative process, applied to urban complex systems, for improving the performance of the city shows how incorporating a wide range of issues makes it possible to improve the metabolism of the city as well as its energy performances. IMM designlab is intended to assist decision-makers, municipalities, stakeholders and public bodies to transform an existing urban context into a more sustainable one. MM design lab wish to help them to win the challenge and transform it in a sustainable development opportunity. www.immdesignlab.com
