Display your favourite fabrics on the front of a handmade clock.
Here’s a clever idea for showing off your favourite fat quarters of fabric! Create a timepiece that’s personalised to you with a fabric-covered clock face. Choose a fabric print that will make you smile however slow or fast the minutes tick by. Or, pick a design to match with the rest of your home furnishings. Needcraft clock kits contain everything you need to make your own (except for the fabric and a battery) and even includes a choice of white or black hands. What’s best − no sewing! Self-confessed fabric addict Rebecca Reid shares why buying fat quarters has always been her guilty pleasure. “I’M A BIT OF A FABRIC HOARDER BUT ALWAYS feel a little guilty when I buy metres of fabric with no real plan in mind other than ‘that would make a lovely skirt!’ So, I tend to indulge buying fat quarters instead as they’re a smaller guilty pleasure. They don’t sit on my shelves unused for long! I love looking through my stash to see what I can use next. I bought a bundle of monochrome fabrics (Modern Background Paper by Zen Chic for Moda) just because I loved them! They feature text, diagrams, maths symbols and linear patterns as well as my favourite newsprint. I had no idea what to use them for but I’m always attracted to fabrics with text. I kept them for a few months then picked one of the newspaper prints to add pockets to the front of 80 WWW.SIMPLYSEWINGMAG.COM
a plain denim pinafore − it’s given it a little bit of personality! Each of the fabrics feature very small details so when I was choosing some fabric to make a cushion for Simply Sewing to show how to work English paper piecing, I knew they would be perfect. I pinned the little paper hexagons to each piece, centring them on just the part of the fabric I wanted to show. Then I tacked the fabric round the shapes and stitched them all together in place (see results above). The beauty of fat quarters is that they are often sold in bundles and all the fabrics go together, so you know that whatever you choose they’ll all coordinate beautifully.” Rebecca is the Technical Editor for Simply Sewing, www.simplysewingmag.com
