By Helen Martin. Stars, those magnificent fixed luminous points in the sky, a combination of gases and dust held together by their own gravity, have held huge significance for people on Earth for thousands of years. From an important navigational tool for explorers past and present, to the zodiac signs with their personality traits, they have formed the folklore and religious practices of cultures all over the world. There are approximately 200 to 400 billion stars in our own Milky Way Galaxy and most are between one and 10 billion years old. Our closest stars are nearly four and a half light years away

from us, so we never see the stars in ‘real time’. To journey through the night sky and identify a star, to see a cocoon of interstellar gas and dust, a scattering of newborn stars lying light years away, is nothing but a rush, a beautiful feeling. During set times of the year, certain constellations, planets and meteor showers are much more visible, including the 12 constellations that straddle the sun’s path across the sky (known as the ecliptic) – the signs of the zodiac. Indigenous Australians, the most ancient continuous civilisation on Earth, have traditions shown in dance, song and tales passed down their

UNDERSTAND WHAT’S IN YOUR EXISTING PRODUCTS. Do a little research and let what you find do the talking. There are a ton of ingredients in beauty products that are used only to prolong a shelf life, to pad out a product, to make it smell nice, to make it lather or give it that cream-like consistency. Some of these ingredients have even been accused of causing

damage to our health. While there is still heated debate within the scientific and cosmetic communities on many of these points, we’re of the minds that if there’s a risk, why take the chance? Do the research and you’ll soon understand why clean beauty is so important. Recommended reading: Not Just a Pretty Face, Stacy Malkan; and No More Dirty Looks, Siobhan O’Connor & Alexandra Spunt.

TRAVEL Take a journey with us and learn about modes of storytelling around the planet. Making sense of the world in words, performance and art is how we create culture, and we look at the creative ways we can capture stories in travel journals this issue. Then onwards, around the globe with a painter and an author, stopping for some history on the way. As you feel inspired to get out and navigate new places yourself, spend some time folding and assembling our antique map origami globes. Hang each orb up for a constant reminder of the desire to explore.
