oogle defines entrepreneurs as a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so. I would say it is so much deeper than that with the late night/early mornings, stress, perseverance, taking no for an answer, rejection, and I can go on and on.

In this issue of IMPACT Magazine, we have decided to focus on the entrepreneurs. The move makers, those who have decided they are moving forward in the beauty of their dreams. They have decided that they are going to walk out with support or without. To carve out a niche in this society with their name on it. The new entrepreneurs are utilizing the new tactics that have been placed in our hands. Social media has changed the game just as television changed the game for radio listeners. These new entrepreneurs are utilizing old and new methods to take their industries by storm. Like fashion designer, Jhanelle Lewis who will be taking her design company, Royal Eminence, to Paris this Fall. Jhanelle created a custom piece for our cover feature,
Juju who is the newest member of Love & Hip Hop New York. Juju has added author to her repertoire when she dropped her book “Secrets of a Jewel”. A relationship book where Juju drops jewels to the readers on subjects like being a booty call to dating guys for their money. Another Love & Hip Hop entrepreneur is Tammy Rivera. Tammy saw the need in the community to put out quality swimwear for women of all sizes! Alton Alexis went from the street to being one of the biggest plugs in New Orleans for hair distribution. Raquel Smith who took no for an answer to work exclusively as the stylist for Beyoncé! Entrepreneurship is not a walk in the park, but if you are doing what you love, the reward outweighs the work and risks! Take the journey through these pages to be inspired and empowered to know if entrepreneurism is truly for you, you can do it through persistence and determination!
Remember to always be an IMPACT! Tunisha Brown

Alton Alexis
A
lton “Slam” Alexis was born and raised in the turbulent streets of New Orleans, Louisiana. Alton grew up in the Calliope Housing Project (CP3) where violence and drug deals were the norm. Watching his father navigate through the street life made it natural for him to follow suit and pursue a life of crime. Being raised in the midst of the streets, the turmoil has taught him valuable business lessons that he was able to carry over to the corporate world. Alton understood that business is business all the way around and the only difference is the product. Marketing, advertising, promotion, distribution, and management were a few of the transferable skills that were learned while dabbling in the streets. Unfortunately, but fortunately all superficial good things must come to an end. Alton Alexis’ father was murdered in 2002 which caused him to become more engulfed in the violence while seeking revenge. Soon thereafter, in the summer of 2003, he was sent to federal prison for being caught on camera discharging a firearm and critically injuring two people. The federal government sentenced him to 120 months (10 years) and 3 years’ probation. The time in prison was a blessing in disguise because the slow pace allowed him to learn about things that were of interest to him. While in prison Alton took a job in the prison barbershop and began to educate himself about business as a whole. One of the many business interest was the hair industry. Learning that the hair industry was a multibillion dollar industry and continues to rise was the spark he needed to focus more on his Barber/ Styling skills. Upon release from federal prison

From Prison To Hair Distribution
Alton immediately enrolled in Delgado Community College’s Barber/Styling program and the journey began. The program stressed the technical aspect of hair and opened him up to different levels of opportunity in the industry that he was not aware of such as hair extensions. In 2012 SweetStickyStuff, LLC was formed as an alternative to “Juicy Couture” to cater to a woman’s provocative nature and sex appeal. The first items up to bat under the SweetStickyStuff umbrella was T-shirts and hair extensions. Countless man hours went into learning the ins and outs of the hair business and more importantly, the hair itself. Fortunately for Alton he had a school full of cosmetologist at his disposal to question about everything he needed to know. Using these given resources helped him create a business focused on quality and customer service. He was able to control quality better once the Barber/Styling program was completed.
til he found the right people to do business with. To his surprise, the price was amazing, but most importantly, the quality was beyond belief. Every question was asked and every test was performed on the extensions, but Alton wanted that extra assurance. He wanted to test the product with products distributed in the United States. After returning to America, Alton performed even more rigorous test on the hair sample and they passed with flying colors and the real business begun. With the new products received from the direct source he was able to show love by lowering the prices even more so that the average person could afford to beautify themselves. A SweetStickyStuff Bundles storefront was opened in a prime location and the company began to secure a new level of success while eating into competitor’s market share. Today, the premium hair extensions are being distributed the www.SweetStickyStuff. com as well as the two brick and mortar locals: 2929 Tulane Ave. NOLA 70119 and 4311 Airline HWY, Baton Rouge LA. 70805. New hair care product line (Shampoo, Conditioner, Leave in Conditioner) called Bundle Wash is coming to market very soon. These products are formulated to give life back to ALL Hair no matter where it’s purchased.
Upon completion in 2014, Alton flew to China equipped with the broad knowledge of the industry he has learned over a 2 year period, ready to negotiate. The objective was to get the best quality for the best price. He trekked around the foreign country day and night un-

MDonnell Tenner, M.Ed the Eduprenuer Who Turns Risk into Promise
Entreprenurialship is the heart of American economics. It activates communities and grows local commerce. It inspires creative movements and solves problems through the use of out of the box, creative methods. MDonnell Tenner, M.Ed. has found a way to merge his entrepreneurial spirit with his passion for black and brown children in disadvantaged school districts as an Eduprenuer. In its first incarnation, Tenner developed and ran the only Black owned military school in the state of Minnesota. He rolled up his sleeves as any entrepreneur would and, with the help of the community, used the Charles Young Military Academy to transform the lives of students who the school system deemed unteachable and behaviorally uncontrollable. After working hand in hand with students in underserved communities, Tenner launched the 240 Ways Series. Under the moniker, the educator began to author books for students, parents and teachers that offer insight to navigating the murky waters of the urban school system. Whether he’s leading a teachers’ professional development workshop or talking young men through the steps to graduation, he speaks to that population with a matter of fact tone and the love of an impassioned father. We sat down with MDonnell Tenner to learn about school turnarounds, his experience with students and his thoughts on new educators. IMPACT MAGAZINE: In your book, 30 Days Turnaround, you give teachers a step by step instruction to moving a district in the right direction. We understand that you, yourself have turned around an entire school in 100 days! How were you able to accomplish such a feat? After drawing down the school’s behavior data, our team moved our focus to the top 30 disrupters and instituted a streamlined process that included home visits, parent engagement and individual learning plans for each of them. We offered each student a clean slate and set expectations that, with proper guidance from the insulated group of parents, teachers and administration, they were able to meet. Reintegrating those students back into the population became an easy task. On the staff side, we instituted a professional development series anchored in building meaningful relationships with diverse students, which was the basis of 14 @impactmagazine
my book and Action Guide Teacher’s Only. When taken together, these steps create a learning environment in which students thrive. IMPACT MAGAZINE: What statistic about urban schools really stands out to you as a problem that must be addressed? Literacy and mental health issues within urban student populations are overwhelming. Our boys can’t read so they act out and are pushed to special education. They often suffer from “Hood disease”, a disorder closely related to PTSD. This goes unmanaged and these beh aviors persist because teachers have yet to build meaningful relationships with students. Another truly jarring statistic revolves around the recruitment and retention of black male teachers. Black male students need to see themselves in the classroom and this isn’t happening. Representation matters. IMPACT MAGAZINE: What do you say to new educators who will be working in the diverse urban populations? This journey is a calling and must be led by passion. As an educator, you have to be all in with an innate ability to build relationships or a burning desire to learn the strategies to begin doing so. You have to want to know about your kids. You have to want to be there. IMPACT MAGAZINE: What do you see as the future of the 240 Ways Series brand as a whole? I’m excited to start my fall 17’ book tour, do more consulting with school districts and engaging at a grassroots level with diverse student youth populations across the country. MDonnell Tenner is unapologetic about his work with black and brown students in urban school districts. His 240 Ways book and lecture series offers practical strategies for those vested in the lives of students. He makes an IMPACT wherever he goes and is determined to continue to motivate and elevate the culture through our most precious resource—our youth.
Raquel Smith Our Editor-In-Chief, Tunisha C. Brown, sat down to speak intimately with Raquel on believing in yourself and why it is important for her to give back! IMPACT: What gave you the strength to continue to pursue working at the House of Dereon when you were already told no? RAQUEL: Determination was a key element that enabled me to continue pursuing HOD. I am a very determined person and I was not going to stop until I got inside those doors. I had a plan. I knew once I got my foot in the door, I would work hard to prove that I was an important asset to the team and that I would work my way up.
IMPACT: How important is perseverance during rejection? RAQUEL: Perseverance is extremely important. I knew what I had to offer and I wanted a chance to prove it. Perseverance shows determination and without determination, we leave room for failure. To me, having perseverance means continuing to pursue our goals, no matter how many times we are told no.
IMPACT: You moved from being the assistant to Heather Thomson to Mrs. Tina Lawson. What are three key factors? RAQUEL: The willingness to learn; we should always keep an open mind. I believe a closed mind will never grow. 2.) Do not complain about the workload. There are so many people out there who are just as hungry as us, if not more. 3.) Always ask questions and never assume anything. 4.) Always go beyond what you are asked to do. This shows character. 5.) Be organized and punctual. If we are not 15 minutes early, we are 15 min late. 6.) Mind your business 7.) Always be honest, even when you would rather not.
IMPACT: Discuss the importance of being able to work as a team. RAQUEL: It is super important that as a team, everyone is on the same page, with the same agenda. It’s important to understand that what we do as a team member is a reflection of everyone whether it’s good or bad. Maintaining professionalism is critical. Know that being apart of a team, we have to be able to agree to disagree and put our personal feelings aside for the betterment of the team.
16 @impactmagazine
IMPACT: Tell us about your jewelry line. RAQUEL: My father and son inspired my jewelry collection. I started working with gold because gold symbolizes certain aspects of my father’s character: loyalty, strength, understanding, wisdom, generosity, love, inspiration, and compassion. I chose to do bold statement pieces that are sure to be notices for their uniqueness and quality. When my dad passed away, I felt that I had lost myself, and I needed time to regroup. So I decided to go back to college to study jewelry design. And I fell in love with it instantly. It reignited my passion. When I’m designing jewelry, I feel as though nothing else matters because I am in a creative mood. My son is a miracle baby. I had been told I could never have kids. Later, I found out I was pregnant, and this unleashed a whole new level of determination, for me. So my legacy for him will be a jewelry line that was inspired by his grandfather.
IMPACT: Where can it be purchased?
IMPACT: How do you give back?
RAQUEL: My jewelry is currently in production, and we’re doing everything we can to assure a nationwide release date this year in 2017.
RAQUEL: I give back by being of service wherever I am wanted and needed, which includes temporary housing facilities, schools, colleges, and youth empowerment programs. I speak to the kids about my journey and how doors have opened for me because of the things I just listed for your readers. I’m always straightforward about any questions asked because I am not the one to try to sugarcoat realness.
IMPACT: What advice do you have for the readers who are pursuing their dreams? RAQUEL: First I’d say believe. Believe in yourself and believe in your dream and work hard. Next I would say, in the pursuit of your dream, avoid comparing yourself to others. Don’t be afraid to make sacrifices when needed. Stay humble and surround yourself around positive people. Learn as much as you can at any given opportunity. Be unique and think outside the box. Be a quick problem solver for when emergency issues come up.
IMPACT: Why is it important to give back? RAQUEL: I feel that I’ve been blessed in order to be a blessing to others. Some people look at the world and all they see is negativity. God has allowed me to look at the world, and see endless possibility. So it is important for me to go out and share my journey with my fans that I speak to and mentor. Ideally, what I do with the youth today will help shape them for what tomorrow demands of them and motivate them to keep reaching their goals no matter how hard it get. That’s why it’s important to give back.

Mechi Holt
Heiress House I don’t always have to be in something clingy. After finding my best self and my purpose, I feel regal. I want my clothing to feel that way too! I should feel and look like an Heiress.
Heiress House is an emerging name that’s landing it’s way into the hearts of fashion forward women, was recently created by a woman with a relentless passion for luxury, elegance, class, style, and beauty. The designer, Mechi, is a Chapel Hill, NC native who spent her younger years immersed in various cultures due to her father’s traveling military lifestyle. With major trend setting cities like Detroit, Atlanta, and DC at her fingertips, she found absolute bliss in the ever changing styles and creative looks of pop culture and international flair. At a time when following the trend felt almost mandatory in Atlanta city schools, Mechi reached within to find an even greater creativity (sewing). With no patterns, Mechi designed a satin blouse/ pant ensemble that surprisingly gained her unexpected positive feedback and affirming praise. Opening her eyes to a new and undiscovered talent.“Every child has a moment that propels them into their passion-that was my moment.” She explains. I knew that I loved the art of hair and make-up but when the world of fashion was discovered an instant awakening had occurred from within and I knew I would pursue a career in the fashion Industry. Mechi removed boundaries and limits from the flow of her gifts. Instead of requiring one thing of herself, she chose to explore fashion, beauty, hair and makeup

without restraint, landing the Heiress in several fashion supervisory upper management roles for Armani Cosmetics, Nordstrom and eventually becoming her own boss embarking on entrepreneurship. Her greatest life challenge and disguised blessing was faced as she suffered inwardly with the rise of unmovable weight gain. With unceasing struggles from her teen years, She did her best to use it to her advantage with plus size modeling, and plus competitions including Monique’s Fat Chance, where Mechi was chosen as one of the finalist. but ahead of her time in a season where it had not yet been so accepted, plus size fashion opportunities were very rare. Against the wishes of family and friends, Mechi chose to research the Duke Hospital Gastric Bypass options. She recalls studying the facts, the pros and the cons until her decision was firm. In 2010 Mechi chose to change her life with weight loss surgery. Her success brought great attention and the Duke Weight loss Centers gave her the position of Gastric Bypass Ambassador and public speaker. Motivating potential surgical weight loss clients and sharing her success stories not only gave her an incredible new outlook on her purpose but also inspired her to continue in her healthy eating lifestyle.
With a closet filled with great plus size finds and designs, She chose to simply recreate the pieces with a touch of stitching and sewing. This gave her the ability to step out in an unseen, design each time she made public appearances. Her history of being body conscience gave Mechi a completely opposite perspective on clothing. Debunking the myth that smaller women look better in fitted clothing, now knowing she had an upper advantage of having been plus size to now smaller felt she had the knowkedge to be able to design and create for both sizes, so she created eye catching skirts that also complemented the curvy woman that flowed instead. “I don’t always have to be in something clingy. After finding my best self and my purpose, I feel regal. I want my clothing to feel that way too! I should feel and look like an Heiress,” she stated. When Mechi decided to finally design for her sister, Shenette Swann, a Soul singing recording artist, her work became public. With no time to even prepare, and no patterns, simply raw talent, The Heiress House Brand came alive with a nonstop skirt demand. Now, known for her elegant and regal flowing skirts, and her personal styling consulting, the Heiress has overcome obstacles and she has passionately found herself back where it began. I would love to speak with you regarding having her on your radio show to speak about her story and the launch that will be taking place in Charlotte, NC on July 22nd. Attached you will find a picture of Mechi of Heiress House.
Heiress House was born in an instant when the style savvy seamstress had no more available clothes due to rapid weight loss.

She is a native of Columbia, South Carolina where she attended Richland District One Public Schools. After graduating from W.J. Keenan High School, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from The College of Charleston in 2000. Always wanting to be a part of the communications industry, as a young girl she wanted to be a talk show host and later changed to an investigative reporter. She aspired to match the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Dianne Sawyer and Barbara Walters. She would spend hours as a child playing “talk show” with her stuffed animals and dolls. While in college she created an audition reel but it was an internship at a local PR and Marketing Firm that opened her eyes to the world of Public Relations. She was tasked with handling a campaign for Christmas in July, a nonprofit that completes home renovations for the elderly in the small town of Hollywood, SC. It was then that she met her love for being behind the scenes and connecting the dots for those that mattered – the client and the community. Upon graduating from college, she moved to Charlotte, NC and like many graduates, accepted a job not related to her field. In 2007, her pastor asked her to write a press release for a community event. Not having previously discussed her background, he was not aware that she had formal training in this area and soon enlisted her services to be the PR Point of Contact for future community events for the church. Through this, what some would call an “unlikely” appointment, for the next four to five years she would continue to develop her writing style, media list and contacts.
Out of the need for something more in her professional development and the growing love for what she does, The Queen’s English PR was launched in September 2012 and rebranded in April 2017 to Mattie Clay Branding & Public Relations. The agency works with Beauty and Lifestyle Brands and Nonprofit organizations to create a consist brand message, foster collaborative relationships and obtain media placements for brand awareness. From a want to do something but a need to expand her network, she created PR People Meet in February 2016. The annual networking event is held during CIAA and hosts publicists, managers and media – away from client duties during the high-profile tournament weekend. Securing the Bag
T
hey say hindsight is always 20/20 but, what if it doesn’t have to be? What if you didn’t have to hit rock bottom and start over because you weren’t prepared for your “happily ever after” to end? Ladies, we have to ensure that we secure the bag for ourselves because we should never be solely dependent on anyone else. Time and time again women choose to forego their education, careers and entrepreneurial efforts for the idea of love and family. All too often, we are left alone to handle the responsibilities of family and come up short with finding true love. While it is natural to desire companionship, let’s not forget to use our heads when chasing matters of the heart.
What if you didn’t have to hit rock bottom and start over because you weren’t prepared for your “happily ever after” to end?
SECURE YOUR HEART Take your time and truly identify what it is that makes you happy and what goals you want to achieve for yourself. One of the main reasons we fail at both love and relationships is, placing all our hopes and dreams in the concept that we need someone else’s presence in our lives to complete us. Having a spouse and family is great but, it should be an extension of who you already are. It should never distract you from your goals, overshadow your voice, your desires and your God given purpose in life.
THE WISE GEM SECURE YOUR BAG Ladies, ladies, ladies, please secure your finances. Preferably, prior to getting into a relationship. Money attracts money, stability attracts stability and broke attracts broke. If you find that you are always attracting the same kind of people in your life, take inventory of your shortcomings. We are not able to make space for increase in any area of our lives that we are not working towards or mentally prepared to receive. Having a rainy day savings account is not only responsible, it is the 1 sure thing you can do for yourself that allows you the freedom to make moves as you please. So many women are stuck in abusive, toxic and/or just plain bad relationships because they live paycheck to paycheck and seemingly can’t afford to leave their partner. This is an easy one to avoid.
SECURE YOUR DREAMS
SECURE YOUR TRUST
SECURE YOUR FUTURE
Many of us walk around praying, wishing, reading books, attending workshops and searching everywhere but internally to discover our life’s purpose. While all of these are good, helpful and necessary in their own way; never forget or diminish the natural ability we have within to define our path. Identifying your reason for existing and operating in it is a joy no man or woman can ever take from you. Imagine how much better it would be if you can make a living out of doing what you love.
I am and will forever be an eternal optimist but, I am not a fool. As much I prefer to see the good in everyone, the reality is that most often the ones closest to you can and will hurt you the most. No one is exempt, not your family, friends, business partners, employees and acquaintances. If at any time you find it necessary to mix your personal relationships with money, always seek legal counsel and sign contracts when needed to protect yourself and your investments. It’s called being smart and ensuring there is no confusion, miscommunication, or unclear intent as it pertains to the business of your money.
There are a million ways to invest in yourself. Whether you are seeking additional education or on the job training, make sure you are continually learning and keeping yourself marketable. The needs of the workplace are ever-changing and you should always be willing to learn a new skill or perfect a task to remain relevant. Be knowledgeable of any employee stock options, 401K plans and IRA’s. Also, seek the guidance of a financial consultant who can help you better manage your money and help prepare you for retirement.

Spirit of the Hustle
Josh Gray
T
hirteen years ago, a very angry ten-year old Josh Gray sat in a group home questioning why he was alive. After multiple suicide attempts, he realized that what he was doing to himself was not getting him to where he wanted to be. Josh channeled his anger into stepping. “My mother did not have a car and I did not like to ask people to do anything for me so for seven years, I rode my bicycle ten miles round trip to practice,” said Gray. While stepping with the Hype Step Team (www.hypecrewinc.com), he developed disciple, judgment, and focus to remain eligible to step. With his drive and ambition, he helped the Hype Step Team win the Disney National Step Show, Battle of the Borders, and NC State Championship. He continued to volunteer as a mentor and coach after graduating and is a sought-after motivational speaker. After getting out of the group home, Josh never moved back home. He supported himself by working multiple part-time jobs in retail and fast food. After graduating from the Nurses Assistant program at Pitt Community College, Gray embarked on a career change that resulted in him becoming the youngest African-American male Operations Manager worldwide with the agency network for the Avis/Budget brand. He exemplifies customer service and hustle. According to Josh, “When I got this position, it was my first management position. I spent the time to become an expert on operations and the brand.” Gray is currently the Operations Manager at the Avis/Budget located at Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The secret to Josh’s hustle? He just dabs on them. The acronym DAB :
D – Don’t just want, expect. If you do not expect to achieve your goals, you won’t.
A – Always ride the extra ten miles. Invest ten (minutes, call, what-
ever measurable unit of activity) to do something that advances you toward your goal. If Josh could ride ten miles a week on is bicycle from fifth grade to high school to make sure he made it to practice, you can invest that in yourself. B – Begin and end by delivering excellent customer service. Josh does not rent cars and truck. He rents service with a smile. He rents going the extra miles. He rents provide an excellent customer experience. Josh does not spend time, he invests it. If you are going to invest time in front of a screen, he recommends watching Shark Tank, Les Brown, or reading the Skimm. He does not waste time in activities that do not move him closer to achieving his goals. www.avis.com www.budget.com 32 @impactmagazine

Chic Dezignz S
ome would say the term, “fashion forward” is a cliché but at its core it resonates with the essence of who we are as women. To say fashion is at the forefront of everything for everyone would be far reaching. However, to say that fashion is incorporated in each capacity of Suzanne “Sue” Nelson’s life would be the reality. She is thoughtful about her decisions but because fashion is so innately intertwined with her spirit most of these decisions are effortless by nature. Just like every piece of jewelry from her online retail store, Chic Dezignz, Sue has a story that is able to resonates with the masses. If you tried to describe Sue as a piece of jewelry it would be a bib necklace. Even as a standalone piece, they have the power to make a statement, are multi-dimensional in design, and have the unspoken charisma to allure different audiences with its charm. This piece of jewelry is Sue; she is bold, layered and dazzling by nature. Just like the bib necklace she is comprised of several different components. It is quite a feat to be a mother, wife, full-time career woman, philanthropist, and entrepreneur but Sue does it all with style. Sue’s current success is no microwave success story, her life and experiences go far beyond a quick journey to the top. The start of her journey with the fashion industry can be traced back to her time spent at the Bahamas Training College where she focused on Marketing. The time she spent there gave her the opportunity to learn the business side of the fashion industry that she would one day step into. The cliché phrase, “If you do something you love then you will never work a day in your life” is an accurate representation of her story. From a very young age she knew she enjoyed being “fashion forward” in every aspect from her clothing to her accessories. She took pride in it and others began to notice. Styling for herself was fun but she wanted more of a challenge and wanted the opportunity to put her skills to work. Chic Dezignz was started because Sue enjoyed seeing a woman’s personality enhanced through an amazing outfit and eye-catching accessories. Every success story has its own unique set of obstacles along the way. Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer. Commonly people say when they get the diagnosis their
world stops but for Sue it meant act. She used the unfortunate circumstance to fuel her passion even more. She began to embrace life with a clear focus and realized she needed to use her talents to be a blessing to others. Her entrepreneurial passion for Chic Dezignz grew exponentially through the experience. She is great at what she does but she does not let the fashion industry define her. Sue credits her family as the driving force behind everything that she does. She advises those who are interested in this industry to think their decisions through and pray about everything. In addition, she mentions that it is okay to have tunnel vision in your twenties because this is the time where you are developing yourself the most. The scariest thing about Sue Nelson is that she has not even reached her peak and the best is yet to come from her. #impactmagazine 37
Best Travel Value
I
In the Caribbean
n the Caribbean, peak season runs from mid-December to mid-April. This coincides with the northern climes winter, adding to the Caribbean’s attraction as a destination. Although there is little temperature variation over the course of the year, peak season tends to be drier and is well outside the annual hurricane season.
Plan to book your cruise early if you choose to travel during peak season. This is especially true if you plan your vacation during the Christmas holiday season. As you would expect, more travelers book Caribbean cruise vacations during this time because of ideal conditions and often coordinate vacations with Christmas holiday breaks from work and school. Don’t expect to find great savings during peak season. Best Value On the other hand, travelers will find reduced rates and fewer fellow travelers during the off-peak season. Cruise lines tend to reduce prices to fill their staterooms. Be aware that some ships that cruise the Caribbean during the peak season are often re-located to other parts of the world during the Caribbean’s off-season. If you’ve got a favorite ship, be sure its itinerary includes off-peak Caribbean ports. Additionally, not all shops and restaurants in ports are open year-round. Some close during off-peak times or operate on a much more limited schedule. You may find your favorite shop closed the day you happen to be in port during the off-season. Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30 each year with the height of the season occurring in mid-August through September. Keep in mind that this represents the historical average, and some years, like 2005, saw tropical storms and hurricanes throughout the entire season. In planning an off-peak cruise, May is a good choice as it falls outside both the peak season and hurricane season. The same is true of month between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Cruise lines that sail the Caribbean are prepared to alter course as needed to avoid inclement weather and rough seas. Your trip may be a bargain; however, depending on the unpredictability of the weather, your ports of call may change.
