Mandi’s strange dream
Dot van der Westhuizen
Mandi wipes her forehead. She is competing in the interschool athletics tomorrow and has been practising all afternoon. Her biggest dream is to run the 100 m sprint in the Olympics one day. But right now she has to go home.
At bedtime she quickly drifts off to sleep, tired from the day’s practise. Her dream carries her to a green athletics field and she can hear the spectators cheering. There are hundreds of athletes from all over the world. She notices a huge flame on a stand and next to it are the five circles everyone knows so well. She has qualified for the Olympics! She is still staring at all the famous athletes when she hears the announcer calling the names for the 100 m sprint.
Mandi takes her position for the race. She is nervous and excited at the same time. The starting gun fires and she’s off! She breaks the ribbon at the finish line and the crowd cheers. She has broken the world record! She runs a victory lap around the field and waves at the crowd. On the podium she proudly holds her gold medal.
“Mandi,” the voice seems far away. She slowly wakes up. Her mom is standing next to her bed smiling at her. “It’s time to get up,” she says. Mandi gets up and puts on her school uniform. Who knows, maybe her dream will come true one day.

Arnold and the amazing race
Lee-Ann Stapelberg

“I’m going to run a marathon,” Arnold casually tells his friends around the dinner table that evening. Everything goes quiet. They all stare at him in surprise and then burst out laughing! “Oh Arnie, have you completely lost your mind?” asks Claude. “No, Claude, I have not. And you can all laugh at me. I will show you. Not only am I going to take part, I’m going to finish it and win too,” says Arnold, determined.
For the next few months Arnold trains hard. He leaves the day before the marathon. All his friends at the house wish him well. Claude decides to go with Arnold to support him and to be there if he needs help along the way.
Early the next morning, Arnold lines up with thousands of others waiting for the start of the race. The shot rings out through the morning air and Arnold sets off. Everyone easily passes him, but he doesn’t care. He’s not here to prove anything to anyone but himself. Through the day he runs, taking water along the the way. Claude is there to cheer him on. Arnold perseveres through the heat and doesn’t give up. The sun starts to set and still Arnold is running.
Claude goes ahead to the finish line. He will wait there for his friend.
Late that night when everyone has already gone home and the race is long over, Arnold finally reaches the end. “Well done, my friend,” says Claude. “You may not have won, but you certainly are a hero.” Arnold smiles tiredly, “Thank you, Claude, I think I have had enough adventure for one day, let’s go home.”

Sammy wants to fly
Maryanna Uys
Sammy is stealthily creeping through the grass. He has his eye on a nice fat dove for lunch. Just as he prepares to pounce, the dove takes to the sky and escapes to a tree. Sammy is frustrated and meows sadly.
But he is a clever cat and won’t let this get him down. He soon comes up with another plan. I need to learn to fly! he thinks excitedly. Then I can go after any bird I want! He looks at the big tree in the corner of the garden. Without thinking, he starts climbing it. He climbs to the very highest branch and then looks down ...
His stomach turns and he feels dizzy. He is scared and has no idea what to do. I must fly, he thinks. There is no other way down. He shuts his eyes tightly, breathes deeply and jumps! He spreads his legs as far as possible and flaps his paws, but it’s no use, Sammy falls as fast as a ton of bricks. Fortunately for him he lands in the neighbour’s swimming pool with a SPLASH!
He sinks fast and he knows he is in trouble. He kicks furiously and manages to reach the steps. He gets out and shakes himself angrily. A wet cat is a cross cat. The neighbour, Lizzy, watched everything. She gently picks him up and wraps him in a towel. She sits with Sammy on her lap in the sun until he is warm and dry.
It’s better to stay on the ground, he thinks, I’ll stick to hunting mice, at least they can’t fly!
