Born in 1763, Tani Buncho was a literati painter and poet. Like most bunjinga painters of his time, Buncho focused largely on Chinese-inspired landscapes. Since travel outside Japan was forbidden under the Tokugawa shogunate he was unable to study in China, however Buncho did spend many years in Nagasaki studying Chinese Art and Western Art. Watanabe Kazan and Takaku Aigai were among his disciples.
Kano Korenobu (1753-1808) was the son and pupil of Kano Michinobu and became the 7th generation head of the Kobikicho line of the Kano school. Like his father before him, he was the goyo eshi (official painter) at the shogunal court and received the honorary title of Hoin, (the Sign of the Law). His son, Kano Isen'in Naganobu, succeeded him in his position and titles.

Born in Kyoto in 1636, the eldest son of Kano Naonobu and the nephew of Kano Tanyu. After his father's death in 1650, he became head of the Kobikicho line of the Kano school and succeeded to the Kano estate at Kobikicho. Like his father and uncle before him, he was appointed the official court painter at the Sento Palace. In 1704 he was given rank of hogen (Eye of the Law) and later in 1709 he received the most coveted title of hoin, (Sign of the Law). In the same year, at order of the emperor, he painted the Kensho Shoji (portraits of Confucius, Mencius, and other sages) in the Shishinden of the Imperial Palace. Tsunenobu was the leading artist of the Kano school and brought the Kobikicho branch to a position of prominence. His paintings are eminently pleasant, charming in color and delicate in tone.

LOT 8 Rare Japanese Scroll Painting by Kano Tanyu (1602-1674) Fine and Rare Japanese scroll painting by Kano Tanyu. Ink and color on silk depicting Mt. Fuji. Signed by the artist with one seal mark. Painting size: 48� x 26.5� Kano Tanyu (1602-1674), is the most celebrated artist from the long line of Kano school painters. The eldest son of Kano Takanobu and grandson of Kano Eitoku, his original given name was Morinobu. In 1617, Tanyu was appointed by the Tokugawa shogunate to become one of the shogunate's official artists. Over the following years, he was given many highly prestigious commissions. Over the 1620s and 1630s, he created a number of large-scale works for Edo castle, Nijo castle, Osaka castle, Nagoya castle, and Nikko Tosho-gu. Estimate: $7,000-$10,000

LOT 10 Japanese Scroll Painting by Kishi Ganku (1749-1836) Ink and color on silk depicting Mt. Fuji and clouds. Signed by the artist with two seal marks. Painting size: 43” x 21.6” M A R C H
Kishi Ganku (1749-1836) was an illustrious painter of the late Edo period and founder of the Kishi school of painting. Born in Kanazawa, Ganku studied many painting styles including those of Chinese painter Shen Nanpin and the Maruyama school, and arrived in Kyoto around 1780. By the late 1700s, Ganku's paintings were appreciated by patrons that included the imperial family, leading to a position under Prince Arisugawa. His students included his son, Gantai (1782-1865), son-in-law Ganryou (17971852), adopted son Renzan (1804-59), Yokoyama Kazan (17841837), Shirai Kayou (fl. ca 1840-60), and Kawamura Bumpou (1779-1821). He was made honorary governor of Echizen (Echizen no kami) toward the end of his life. Estimate: $800-$1,200

LOT 11 Japanese Scroll Painting by Kishi Renzan (1805-1859) Ink on paper depicting Mt. Fuji. Signed by the artist with two seal marks. Painting size: 48” x 25” He was born in Kyoto in 1805, studied under Kishi Ganku, and was adopted by Ganku to be his successor. From 1823, he worked for the Imperial House of Japan, Arisugawanomiya-Ke. His style of painting is noted for its mildness and gentleness. Kishi Chikudo and Koseno Shoseki were among his pupils. LOT 16 Japanese Painting Probably by Kozan Toei (Edo Period) Japanese Scroll Painting probably by Kozan Toei (Edo Period). Ink on paper. Signed by the artist with one seal mark. Painting size: 31” x 16.3” Toei has given a closely observed representation of a hawk perched on the branch of a pine tree, which in the best of Japanese design, rises to the right, leaves the picture plane and then re-enters from the right at the very top. Many Japanese artists of the Edo period created their works for powerful men — the wealthy and mighty nobility and samurai who ruled Japan. These men saw themselves in the hawk’s ruthless strength. Some samurai trained falcons as hunting birds or kept them as symbols of military might. They avidly collected paintings of hawks to decorate their homes and to remind their guests, retainers and even their families that they themselves should be treated with the fear and respect that they imagined plagued the prey of these strong predators. Xu Rong was a Zhejiang Pinghu artist with high reputation in landscape painting during the Qing dynasty. The inscription states that the painting was produced when the artist was living in Japan in 1863. It describes his short jounery to Chang Mountain and expresses his homage to ancient artists including Yuan dynasty artist Yun Lin (Ni Zan, 1301-1374) and Mei He (Zha Shibiao, 1615-1698). Xu Rong shared the same artistic philosophy with these two artists: using very simple but powerful brush touches to present sparse landscapes. As a result, their works hardly represent the natural settings but rather an expression of artist's inner spirit. Estimate: $1,500-$3,000

THERE WILL BE A 21% (TWENTY-ONE PERCENT) BUYERS PREMIUM APPLIED TO ALL SALES. ALL BUYERS LOCATED IN THE STATE OF ILLINOIS MUST PRESENT AN ILLINOIS RESALE CERTIFICATE FOR TAX EXEMPTION, OR ILLINOIS SALES TAX WILL BE APPLIED. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.
Payment is a precondition to removal. Payment shall be by cash, certified check or similar bank draft, or any other method approved by the Company. Checks will not be deemed to constitute payment until cleared. The Company will charge interest of one and one-half percent (1 ½%) per month on any balance remaining thirty (30) days after the day of sale. Any exceptions must be made upon the Company's written approval of credit prior to sale. Unless the sale is advertised and announced as "without reserve", each lot is offered subject to a reserve and the Company may implement such reserves by bidding through its representatives on behalf of the Consignors. In certain instances, the Consignor may pay less than the standard commission rate where the Company or its representative is a successful bidder on behalf of the Consignor. Where the Consignor is indebted to the Company, the Company may have an interest in the offered lots and the proceeds there from other than the broker's Commissions, and all sales are subject to any such interest. Shipping: Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. In the interest of our clients, Imperial Auctioneers requires a written authorization from the buyer in order to release property if anyone other than the person on the invoice will be picking up the purchased lot. Imperial Auctioneers takes no responsibility for any acts or omissions of any shipping company and will not be liable in any way once items have left our premises. We suggest purchasing insurance for the full value of your item.
In no event shall the Company be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty of description, genuineness, attribution, provenance or condition of the property and no statement by anyone or in the catalogue, in any advertisement, or which is made at the sale, in the bill of sale or invoice, or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a warranty or representation or an assumption of liability. All bidders acknowledge their right to have made or requested full inspection of any and all properties prior to sale and agree to be charged with all matters such inspection may have disclosed or indicated. The company reserves the right to withdraw any property at any time before the fall of the hammer in its sole and exclusive discretion.
Buyer's Premium: 21%
The highest bidder acknowledged by the Auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after sale, the sale record of the Auctioneer shall be conclusive in all respects.
Import and Export Regulations Regarding Endangered Species: Some items in our auctions require special permits in order to leave the country, either due to their value and cultural significance, or because they contain parts from species protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), for example rhinoceros horn, whalebone, tortoiseshell or ivory. If you have any questions about whether a lot may require a permit in order to be shipped to you, we recommend that you discuss the matter with a local customs broker. It is the sole responsibility of the buyer to ensure that the property is properly imported into the buyer's country. If you participate in the auction and as a result, purchase property that you plan to ship to another country, you agree that you are responsible for familiarizing yourself with and complying with any and all applicable import rules and regulations.
If the Auctioneer determines that any opening or later bid or any advance of bidding is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, the Auctioneer may reject the same and withdraw the article from sale. Upon the fall of the hammer, title to any offered lot or article will immediately pass to the highest bidder as determined in the exclusive discretion of the auctioneer. Such bidder thereupon assumes full risk and responsibility for the property sold, agrees to sign any requested confirmation of purchase, and agrees to pay the full purchase price therefore or such part upon such terms as the Company may require. All property shall be paid for and removed by the purchaser at his/her expense within three (3) business days of the sale and, if not so removed, may be sold by the Company, or sent by the Company to a public warehouse, at the sole risk and charge of the purchaser(s), and the Company may prohibit the purchaser from participating, directly or indirectly, as a bidder or purchaser in any future sale or sales. The Company will not be responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or otherwise responsible for any goods left in the Company's possession after seven (7) business days.

If the foregoing conditions or any applicable provisions of law are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to the Company and the Consignor (including without limitation the right to hold the purchaser(s) liable for the bid price) the Company, at its option, may: a.) Hand over the debt to a collection agency. The company will not be responsible for the actions of the collection agency including reporting the debt to the credit bureaus, and communications to third parties such as employers, business associates, and family members. b.) Hold the defaulting buyer liable for the total amount due and begin legal proceedings for its recovery together with interest, legal fees and costs to the fullest extent permitted under applicable law. c.) Resell the property publicly or privately with such terms as the Company deems appropriate, resell the property at public auction without reserve, and with the purchaser liable for any deficiency, cost, including handling charges, the expenses of both sales, the Company commission on both sales at the Company's regular rate, all other charges due hereunder and incidental damages. d.) Take other action as we find necessary and/or appropriate
Payment: We accept Cash, Personal Checks, Certified Checks, Wire Transfers, Paypal and Credit Card (Visa and Master Card). Auction purchases must be paid for within three (3) business days of the auction. International orders and all orders of $5,000 or more must be paid for by Wire Transfer. Taxes: If a buyer has a purchase shipped out of the State of Illinois via a licensed shipper, applicable sales tax will not be assessed. Local (Illinois) dealers must submit a copy of their Resale Tax Exempt certificate in order to be exempt from Illinois state sales tax.
The Company makes no representation or warranty and accepts no liability whatsoever to the seller, the buyer, or any third party in respect of the availability or issuance of valid import and export permits or the existence or exercise of preemption or other rights to purchase by governmental or regulatory authorities anywhere.
