August 1: Hartford Sensory Friendly Day, Connecticut Science Center, 250 Columbus Blvd., Hartford. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the Science Center. That’s why we are lowering the volume and dimming the lights for our friends with sensory disabilities. All who benefit from a quieter environment are invited as our special guests for the day! All visitors will get the fun of going to the Connecticut Science Center plus tons of great activities, and LIVE Science Demonstrations without the usual loud sounds and bright lights. Sensory Friendly Day is presented by the Miracle League of Connecticut. For more information visit CTScienceCenter.org. Monday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. August 4 - 21: Woodbury Sunflower Festival, Farmstead Location of The Farm, Farmstead Location of The Farm, 281, Weekeepeemee Rd., Route 132, Woodbury. Discover some peace from this world’s challenging times in our tranquil sunflower field. Wander through the 18 varieties of exquisite sunflowers thriving across four acres. These sunflowers are an array of brilliant colors: reds, yellows, cream, white, and orange. Choose one of your favorite sunflowers to cut and take with you at the end of your walk, or choose to pick a bouquet of flowers from our field for an additional charge to take home. August 5: Mansfield Moonlight Movies, Betsy Paterson Square, 2 Dog Lane, Storrs. Enjoy free movies outdoors on Betsy Paterson Square in this summer! Activities will begin at 7:30 PM, and the movies begin once its dark. Moonlight Movies are free and open to everyone! AUGUST 5: Encanto . Friday, August 5; 7:30 PM August 6 - 28: Hartford Wildlife Encounters Animal Stage Show, Connecticut Science Center, 250 Columbus Blvd, Hartford, he renowned animal experts from Wildlife Encounters are bringing their unique and outrageous animals into our theater for an amazing LIVE show that will leave you begging for more! Come see and learn about all kinds of magnificent creatures, including some you’ve most likely never seen before. Each show is delivered by highly skilled and passionate educators and presenters from Wildlife Encounters and features a wide variety of non-releasable wildlife. Animals may vary by show. August 6: Hartford Free First Saturday Family Program: S’more History, S’more Fun!, The Connecticut Historical Society. Join the CHS for a day of summer fun! Families will make a s’mores-inspired snack using Connecticut-made ingredients, like Munson’s chocolate. Then, they can experience the fun of ‘camping’ with tents, games, and more. In the event of inclement weather, this program will be moved indoors to the auditorium. 11am – 2pm, FREE August 12: Storrs Moonlight Movies, Betsy Paterson Square, 2 Dog Lane, Storrs. AUGUST 12: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Friday, August 5; 7:30 PM August 19 - 21: Somers Hartford County 4-H Fair, Four Town Fairgrounds, 56 Egypt Rd., Somers. Traditional 4-H fair with food, fun and entertainment. Three full days of exhibits and activities with livestock shows, demonstrations, horse draws, live bands, children’s entertainment, food and much more. Fri. & Sat. 8 a.m.-9 p.m, Sun. 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Adults $5, seniors and children $3, children (3 and under) free. August 21: Putnam Main Street Car Cruise, Rotary Park, Putnam. With hoods raised and paint gleaming, hundreds of cars stretch the Bank of America parking lot, Bank Hometown parking lot and the Woodstock Avenue Bridge and Rotary Park, drawing enthusiast young and old. Sunday 10 a.m August 27: New London Boat Tour: Submarines, Battlefields, and Betrayers, Military Stories on the Thames. City Pier, Thames, River Heritage Park, City Pier-New London, New London. For centuries our harbor has guarded the Thames River and entry to Long Island Sound, with Navy and Coast Guard installations, the ship building industries that support them, as well as two forts that have seen battles, defeats and the birthplace of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. 3:15 PM Out & About is a guide to family–oriented, events and is provided as a community service. August 6: Waterbury Brass City Jazz Fest Grand Street at Library Park. 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. August 6-7: Glastonbury The Glastonbury Food Truck Festival 98 Woodland St in South Glastonbury, admission and parking are free. August 12-14: Lebanon Lebanon Country Fair 122 Mack Road. Price for parking and admission vary. August 13-14: Naugatuck Made in Connecticut Expo at the Naugatuck Event Center. August 13-14: Mystic The Mystic Outdoor Arts Festival at Mystic River Park. August 19-21: Bridgewater The Bridgewater County Fair 100 Main Street. There is a firemen’s parade on Friday at 6:30 p.m. as well as a variety of food trucks. For only $10 a day. August 19-21: Lyme The Hamburg Fair Fairgrounds at 2 Sterling City Road, Lyme, General admission is $10 per day while advance tickets are $8 per day.
