Welcome to Imperial Varsity 2023!
This year’s event is bigger than ever with countless sports going head-to-head over two adrenaline-filled days.
The sporting rivalry between IC and ICSM is unmatched and Imperial Varsity showcases the very best in sporting talent from both sides. As sport’s players, we hope that this event embodies the immense sense of community and that feeling of being part of something bigger!
Make the most of the day by exploring all the sport and social events that Imperial Varsity has to offer.
Whether you’re playing or supporting, get out there and show support for all the teams playing this weekend!
Best of luck to all! Let’s go IC!
Christian CooperIC
Sports ChairThe Imperial Varsity is back! The most important matches of the season for so many clubs and teams, this year ICSM look set to bounce back from last year’s result.
In Ethos, ICSM Waterpolo headlines the day, competing in 3 games against IC. There will be badminton and cricket earlier in the day, and with free spectator tickets, it’s going to be a great Friday!
On Saturday, we’ll see some fierce rivalries between our Harlington sports. We can’t wait to see some toplevel sports and end the day supporting Men’s and Women’s Hockey - our Harlington headliners.
I hope you’re all ready for an incredible two days with great food and drinks and if everything goes well, no rain or snow!
Best of luck to all the participants. ICSM, let’s show IC what us medics can do!

Another year, another Varsity.
Lots of things have changed from last year, but one thing that will never disappear is our love for this sport. Reinvigorated by the numerous successes from our Women 1s, drawn back to the BUCS spotlight by our majestic Philo, the teams this year have been incredible at making the society better than ever.
Imperial Waterpolo is now more inclusive, stronger, and larger than ever, with dedicated LUSL teams as well as a men’s and women’s BUCS team. We’ve had a very strong season from all our teams, and we’ll be showcasing all of this excellence at Varsity this year where we are sure to continue our annual tradition of making the medics regret their degree.
This year has also been a year of co-operation between the two clubs, with our teams taking the few medics who know how to play waterpolo and giving them a proper opportunity to showcase their abilities.
Hopefully we will be seeing a lot of bruised medic egos and an even more disappointed medic crowd at Varsity this year.
Angelo Battistini Chair of IC Swim and Waterpolo ClubYour real varsity winners are back and they’re here to take IC on again. ICSM Water Polo have reached their pinnacle of performance, with the 1s currently sitting higher in the LUSL table than IC 1s. Having gone toe to toe with some of Europe’s best waterpolo teams, IC stand no chance at winning – they’d be lucky to score.
This year, varsity is expanding with 3 matches instead of 2. In never-beforeseen matches, the Men’s 1s and 2s and Women’s 1s will go head-to-head to fight for the win. Us medics have also started training since September, a whole month earlier than the non-medics team and with our recently introduced swimming session, our fitness has never been better. This just goes to show we are more dedicated, faster, and slicker in the pool.
We’ve had a lot of success outside the pool as well, accumulating over 70 members and a record-breaking number of non-medics, which just goes to show which is the better club. We have organised additional matches, namely the alumni match and United Hospital Tournament, and with our inclusive and welcoming culture, we further provide everyone with an equal opportunity to partake in the sport no matter the playing ability.
Who’s going to win Varsity 22/23? Most likely us, everyone come down to Ethos and support us to watch the most anticipated matches of the year.

HARLINGTON HEADLINER
As your voted headliner, IC Hockey is keen to please by giving some of the most competitive matches that Varsity has to offer this year. We’ve delivered in our club night collaboration at Heaven and are ready to take our moves from the dance floor onto the pitch. As a club, we have grown so much this year and a special shoutout goes to all our hockey freshers who have made our club such vibrant place to be.
Our Men’s 1s come off the back of being double LUSL champions in 2022 and look to continue their winning streak in 2023, currently dominating the league and in the semi-finals in the cup. They are looking to continue their winning ways in BUCS as well, hoping to promote back into the BUCS South Premier League; best of luck to them in the coming season. The freshly promoted Men’s 3s are comfortably competing in their new league, and a very strong season from the Men’s 2s sees them in a great position for promotion this year.
There has been huge success across the women’s side of the club, with the women’s 1s crowned BUCS Cup champions in 2022 with more success coming in 2023. Our Women’s 2s have been on fire and have been practising their medic bashing with a season highlight winning 20-0 against GKT. Huge congratulations to our Women’s 3s, with many of their players being completely new to the sport and still getting some great wins this season. Varsity is hotly contested between the two sides, with a history of domination in the Men’s side, whilst ICSM have snuck the Women’s fixtures away from us. This year is sure to be different and under the tutelage of their new coaches, we are confident of a whitewash this year. Medics beware, ICHC are coming for you.
Chen Zhangqu Chen Chair of IC Hockey ClubHOCKEY
IMHC have had a rollercoaster of a season, our first victory over IC began at fresher’s fair, the year was 2022 and IC were breaking the ancient peace treaty of not poaching freshers… thankfully for the red trou it was clear IC have terrible chat and we cleaned the table with fresher recruitment. Now the double-edged sword was that there were so many new faces across all our teams, thankfully the freshers have made a huge impact on and off the pitch which I expect will be the story of varsity.
A little back story of varsities of days gone past… after 6 years of medic domination, IC managed to seal out a ropey victory in 2020 after drawing 1-1 and going to penalty flicks. 2022 and IC showed once more varsity was theirs with a convincing win. Alas IMHC have come into good form in 2023 ready to reclaim hockey varsity to its rightful home.
As this year’s headliner, you should expect some fast competitive hockey, the passion from the boys will be contagious and it all comes down to who wants it more!
Thomas Allen Chair of ICSM Men’s Hockey ClubLast year’s triple varsity winners are back again, bigger and better than ever. We are defending our championship this year with all three of our amazing teams and put IC in their place (again). This year our 3s have had a record commitment and recruitment, our 2s remain unbeaten in BUCS and our 1s are UH champions. Our 1s are the current LUSL cup holders and won ICSM’s team of the year 2022 and the 2s have achieved a jaw dropping 162 goals, a 116 goal difference with second in the league! All our teams are aiming (and with the way the season is going, they will) a season best finish. This year we have shown our hockey prowess and IC should be shaking in their boots. With results like this throughout this season, Women’s Hockey Varsity will be dominated by the medics. So, on the sidelines, give a cheer for the medics, the sure winners of 2023 Varsity.
