Many variations of moshing exist, such as thrashing, or the more extreme Wall of Death, and are typically done in an area in front of the stage which is referred to as the mosh pit or simply pit, though many mosh pits have been known to occur elsewhere, most notably the middle. In Wall of Death, participants are directed away from the center of the standing area by a member of the band until a large, rectangular area is cleared, and, upon the band beginning the next song; the two sides perpendicular to the stage sprint at each other and collide in the middle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moshing Here we go again. The Impericon catalogue is now on its ninth edition. Many things have changed through the years, the merchandise assortment has been be vastly increased, the brand section has developed and with media and tickets we founded whole new departments. Anyways, it is good to see that some things seem to be indestructible, be it bands such as Heaven Shall Burn or Caliban who have been there since day one or employees who have been with us for years now. This growth is not only visible by new bands such as Obey The Brave, new brands like Honour Over Glory or new technical developments like our mobile apps, the catalogue itself is now twice as thick as it was in the beginning.

But enough talking about the old times and back to the here and now, the catalogue that you hold in your hands now has everything you could wish for. There is so much, that one hardly knows where to start. To begin, there is a broad and representative sketch of our merchandise assortment. From As I Lay Dying to Suicide Silence and Your Demise, all the big bands are in here. The product range, with the legendary mesh shorts and tank tops, will definitely prepare you for the upcoming summer, but we also paid attention not to forget the classics like the college jackets, caps and the good old band shirts! For the brands, there will once again be a look at the must-haves. While top brands such as Famous Stars And Straps, Carhartt, Dickies or Vans are represented by a selection of their coolest designs, there are also specific compilations of watches, shoes and sunglasses, so you can have all the accessories you could ever need. Naturally there are awesome competitions in the catalog as well! In cooperation with Vans, Canton and Wacken Open Air we will give away some really cool stuff. It seems As I Lay Dying have been around forever. The band is so to say the manifesto of metalcore. After ten years in business, the five are still as loud as back then. We chatted with guitar player Phil. As I Lay Dying have been around for more than a decade now, looking back, can you still remember what your first shows were like? Yeah, the shows back in the early days were pretty chaotic. There‘d be a ton of kids packed into a small venue with little to no security. Fans would always seem to find their way onto the stage. It‘s still like that in some places. When was the time you realised ”We could become one of those bands headlining tours all over the world!“? Probably when our booking agent told us, haha.

With A LONG MARCH... you did something like an interim snapshot of your bands career. Is As I Lay Dying ready for a BEST OF record yet? I don‘t think bands should put out ”best of“ albums until they‘re done and over with so I don‘t see that happening anytime soon. Having been on so many stages with so many great bands, what do you strive for now? Always pushing ourselves to be better writers, players, performers. We can never be too satisfied with ourselves.

In all those years, what was the most special moment you experienced that you would have missed out on if you hadn´t become musicians? Touring with Iron Maiden on Ozzfest ‚05. Getting to watch one of your most influential bands every day is pretty cool. Tim has a ”rocking Jesus“ tattoo, do you think Christ would have liked your music? Well, dudes with beards and long hair nowadays are generally into heavy music so I‘ll say yes.

If you had the choice to experience one show you have played before one more time, where would time travel take you to? I’d like to re play Dynamo ´95 as the band we are today. I think we would have had a much better show! We are older and much more confident and professional. With humilty I say...a much better outfit then back then. Still, this show really impacted our career in europe,especially on the festival circuit. the only downside if we re did this would be I wouldn’t have my homies...Will, Matt, and Vinnie. So it’s as it should be.

You have had a regular output of great records for more than 20 years now, do you ever fear that there will be a point when everything you‘ve wanted to say is said? Firstly, thanks for that. I do worry sometimes about getting stumped on content. I think anyone that writes has that worry. But, life is ever changing and evolving and so are we. So I feel there will always be material there to pull from or inspire us. Good and bad. Preferably good.. Leave the bad in the past! And there’s always those old demons that I still sometimes wrestle with. I have yet to touch on all my past experiences as well. Believe it or not. So we have material.. Ha. One thing I have to clarify, all our songs are not about the HC scene, they are about real life experiences... The good, bad, and ugly. But there’s a positive message as well with some of our stuff. Songs of empowerment and so forth. People have to sometimes read between the lines and not just assume the obvious.

Your songs have shaped a movement. What is the feeling like, when you realize that at your shows there are 14 year old kids and 40 year old guys singing along to your songs together? Thank you again for the kind words. It’s surreal sometimes when I hear that. We came out of the gate just trying to discover ourselves and be ourselves. That wasn’t always easy, especially being in the shadows of Agnostic Front. but we did manage to carve our own niche in this thing we call hard core and I guess by now we have influenced a lot of bands and supporters,etc. It happened very organically but I can’t say i’m not proud. I’m humbled and I hope we continue to influence and inspire. That’s what music is supposed to do! I feel we’ve always been a band that bridged the gap between “old school” and “new school”. I love being in that position and I hope to continue the tradition. You are a milestone in NYHC history, do you think your sound would differ if you came from another town? Any idea what that would sound like? Nothing against anywhere else. A lot of great music comes out of many a small town and big and small cities alike. But Madball would not be what it is had it not come together in a city like NY and from a scene like the NYHC scene. The vibe of the city and our experiences there helped mold our sound and us as people. that’s just the facts for us. What we’d sound like? Well, if we were from Tennessee we’d probably sound like Johnny Cash...Which isn’t a bad thing! How about another 20 years? How about 10? And we’ll take it from there. 10 is very doable. Legend has it, that Freddy had his first stage appearance at the age of 7. Does little Juliet from youtube bring back some memories here? Yes that is true. It was with Agnostic Front of course, at a legendary club called Great Gildersleeves in NYC ,before CB’s became the hot spot for HC. Little Juliet? You lost me there. But the answer to your question is yes!

Miss May I from Ohio signed to Rise Records in 2008 and with their first two releases APOLOGIES ARE FOR THE WEAK and MONUMENT they worked up an important position in the metal scene. With their new work AT HEART they will continue that. Singer Levi and bass player Ryan told us about music business 2.0 and about growing up as a band. Your success is directly proportional to MySpace´s loss in influence, however you are one of the bands that know how to play the internet. What would you consider most important in nowadays music business 2.0? Levi: Well of course the easy one is Facebook. But it is definitely a different ball game than when we were up and coming. In the Myspace days it was all about music plays and bulletins because comments and friends were fake. But now that is hard to come by on Facebook. We do get comment spam but what everyone really looks at isn’t the “music plays” but the “likes”. We have been personally interactive posting about tours and pics on tour and not having managment just post there is a show because who would want to “like” a band thats basically a robot. I feel like thats what sets us apart at the moment and keeps us a good player of the internet. Ryan: We would never have succeeded if not for our knowledge of how to play the internet game. Social media has always been a huge way for Miss May I to interact with our worldwide fan base and spread our music. The most important thing for us is to stay current. Things change in a matter of seconds online and fans now expect and deserve to have new and exciting posts whenever possible to hold their interest.

”Forgive And Forget“ is featured on the soundtrack of SAW IV. Which movie is your favorite of the SAW series? Levi: I feel like the first one is my favorite. They are all great and equally exciting. But I just remember how ground breaking and interesting that movie was when I first watched it in theatres and to this day they are still the only series that can pull it off. For sure a pop icon of a movie. Ryan: I am about as big of a sissy when it comes to gore as you can get. I saw the first 3 in theaters when I was younger and loved them. As I have gotten older death and dead bodies have become one of my only phobias in a light sense of the word I guess, It was an honor being in such a gritty and dangerous movie though.

Ryan: Miss May I would love to rock the soundtrack to a triumphant war story. Our new record has so many ups and downs that could accurately depict the emotions of going to into battle, triumph, loss, and regret. It would be one of the most metal soundtracks ever. You started the band when you were 16. Do you recommend becoming an adult while being in a band, or do you feel it had some disadvantages growing up on the road? The only disadvantage that I would never take back, is the fact that we never grew up. I love being with my friends having no rules and making a career doing the same thing we have always done just now not in a basement but in front of thousands of people. We are slowly becoming adults though with the buying of homes, taxes and investing all that lame boring stuff. But the best thing is no matter what we do during the day at night we are still those 16 year old punk ass kids playing our hearts out at night. Ryan: We had a sharp learning curve. Our touring career began with the band being at the ages of 18, 18, 18, 20, and 21. We were all inexperienced and a bit lost in the real world, but the road forced us to learn how to be adults. We lived in a van for 7 months a year, living on $5 a day, and hustling merch and cd‘s inside just to get ahead. The cool thing is it paid off and we are sitting on the eve of our greatest record to date, with an army of dedicated metal heads ready to head bang all over the world with us. I wouldn‘t have my life any other way!

Ryan: The Monument title is an a way a reference to this idea. It‘s the idea that we want the record to put our stamp on the metal community, and be a long standing respected metal record, that is monumental to those future artists who want to write their own metal records down the road, just as bands like As Blood Runs Black, As I Lay Dying, Darkest Hour, and All That Remains were for us.

And what movie would you have liked to write the soundtrack for? Levi: I would love to write a soundtrack to Star Wars. One of my favorite series and I feel we could for sure put a little more spice and action to the movie.

MONUMENT is the title of your current record. Who would you like to build a monument for and why? Levi: I would like to build a monument for every single one of the classic metal bands that lasted over 10 years. (Darkest Hour / As I Lay Dying / All That Remains ect.) Even if they aren´t doing what they did in their youth that 10 years is a monument in our eyes. That is what we dream of one day accomplishing and hopefully errecting a monument of ourselves as well.

Wow, with one song released, you already have fans having your lyrics tattooed across the chest. Live and learn has more than 250.000 views already on YouTube. Did you expect such a success? We definitely didn’t expect this much attention. I feel like I’ve been given a second chance to actually get back on tour, play music full-time and do what I love the most. I’ve tried the real life at home. I’ve tried working 9 to 5. It just wasn’t me. I’m looking forward to finally getting my ass back in Europe and especially in Germany, the metal capital of the world. Big things are in the works for Obey The Brave right now and we can’t wait to share them with you.

Using trailers on Youtube, and the viral marketing has become most important. You are now on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Youtube etc... Besides the easy spreading, are there any downsides you see about the social media trends? I might sound like a grumpy old man but I started playing music in 1993, before Facebook, Myspace or even the internet haha We’d trade tapes and CDs to get our music out back then and would pass out flyers at every show. It was so hard to promote your band on a global level. Social networking gave bands the tools to promote themselves more adequately while maintaining a strong DIY ethic. I like the fact that social media gives us the opportunity to directly communicate with the people that support us. However, I’m aware that this type of media might seem like a gimmick to some. A lot of bands seem to spend their time talking online instead of actually putting out music and playing shows. OTB still has a lot of dues to pay and that’s why we’ve already started planning our first European tour to show everyone that music really does come first for us. On the other hand, your first EP will be released on vinyl. Nostalgia or reinventing a trend?

I remember digging through my dad’s vinyl collection and discovering Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and a bunch of other classics. I still collect vinyl once in a while and thought it would be something special to offer to our fans. The “Ups and Downs” EP will be released on Good Fight Music in May. The 7” will come with a download code so you’ll be able to listen to it on your computer and upload it onto your iPod as well. Out of a 1000 pressed, we made a very limited run of 50 silver colored vinyls that will be sold exclusively through Impericon. Keep an eye out. You posted the most recent bowling scores... Who is the champion at the football table? John, our guitar player, normally wins all the time. I’m horrible at those. I’ll stick to hockey!

You have been together since high school, was there ever a time when you got bored of each other and felt like you had to go out and meet ”new people“? Well, the original line up all went to the same high school. We’ve had this line up for about the past three years, Kyle being the last addition. I think we balance being friends and being business partners really well and I think we all have good relationships with each other now.

The electronic influences to your music seem inevitable. What would you sound like if no one ever invented synths? Probably a lot like our latest release, UWWGTB. There is SO much more ”naturalness“ to the programming on it, using a lot of orchestra, piano, and warmer pad sounds, as opposed to the electronic elements on TPAS. We also used a lot more open and closed hi-hat beats, as opposed to drum machines like we did on TPAS. In your Wikipedia article discussion there is a tab called ”Genre war.“ From emo pop to post-hardcore, a lot of things come up. Do you like not being easily put into a genre or do you find this easier than people on Wikipedia do? It’s always hard to describe our music to someone who doesn‘t know what we sound like, and there will always be a difference in opinion as to which genre we actually belong to. As long as people are clinging to the message of the songs, then I don‘t really care what genre we are classified as. You are one of the bands with loads of live experience. What is the best place to play? I always like playing in our hometown, cause I get to perform for my closest friends and all my family, those who have supported me since the beginning. And what is the funniest thing that ever happened to you on stage? Our bass player Andy is quite the jokester, he‘s played multiple times in a chicken suit, or ”green man“ morph suit; it‘s really, really funny.

The cover of THE GOLDEN AGE is rather special, not very hardcore as such. Is there a story to the design? We wanted to do something completely different, something that is not normally associated with our genre or anything close to it. It has already been quite a talking point - some kids have don‘t get it at all and have been really angry about it. But we think it stands out and people will look at it even if they have no idea who we are. And it is always good to stand out. Your Demise recently released THE GOLDEN AGE, probably one of the best records in 2012. Although there has been lots of critics like ”to mainstream“ and ”where is the old Your Demise“, the success of the great tour for the record proved the dudes right! What is going on with the unusual cover of the record and what band Your Demise would never play a cover of – guitar player Stu told us his story. Your last record THE KIDS WE USED TO BE leads to the question: what kind of kids were you and how much of that is left? I‘m pretty sure we are all still the same as we where when we where kids, maybe just a little hairier and with deeper voices. We pretty much still act the same & love the same bands. You have to be a little light hearted in this life. We still laugh at farts, and we all love sweets and taking the piss out of Oz (Daniel Ozburger, guitar player)! And THE GOLDEN AGE, are you at a golden age yet? The Golden Age is a very exciting time for us. There is a feeling in the air, something that we can all feel. We are just ready to unleash the new album and take as many people as we can with us on the ride.

You have been called the ”best British hardcore band“ before, what would be a title you would wish you could have? I think not even a title, maybe a phrase that would encapsulate the band as an entity… but then again, ”the greatest band that ever existed“ would be cool as fuck - ha ha. Your Demise – with that name you are mostly at the rear end of the CD shelf (alphabetically seen), is there a more special reason for that name? The thing with band names is that they don‘t really matter, it‘s all about the band and the music - the name is just there to promote the music and to give people something to recognise. But thinking back now, it might have been a better idea to choose a name that is not last on the shelves! Your Demise started as a Suicidal Tendencies cover band. Is there a band you would never play a cover of? We have often thought about recording a cover cd, with tracks by bands like AFI. Pantera, The Hope Conspiracy etc. A band I would not touch would be something like Trivium, or any other generic metal band. They make music bad enough that it would be pointless trying to polish a turd!
