La Maquiné presents The Forest of Grimm, a visual and musical show inspired by the fairy tales of the brothers Grimm: Tom Thumb, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty, among others. The Forest of Grimm is developed through the musical piece Ma mèrel’Oye (Mother Goose) by the renowned composer Maurice Ravel, who was inspired by the fantasy of the fairy tales. A work without words, staged with puppets and aimed at an audience of children and families, the music acts as an evocative language that describes the atmosphere and the characters. Fairy tales hold an inestimable value for taking us into the universe of children, given that they offer new dimensions to a child’s imagination. The beauty of the show is that it returns to thesetimeless stories through music, in a universal work without text. The aim is to offer a product of artistic quality as with all the productions created by La Maquiné. A show with an appealing and redolent languagefor children to assimilate, analyse and learn the values implicit in the work. Through The Forest of Grimm we aim to transmit with ease cultural knowledge that is indispensable for the education of children.
At the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century, one of the themes dealt with most delicacy by some of the great composers of the age was that of childhood; or, rather, the soul of childhood, subject of unending poetry. This was the case of the renowned composer Maurice Ravel, who, unlike many other composers, did not underestimate children: when he composed music for them he gave the best of his skill and talent. Ma mere l’Oye is considered, along with Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, as one of the finest scores ever dedicated to children. For the music of the show we have chosen the pianopiece of Ma mere l’Oye by Maurice Ravel. The world of fantasy and fairy tale within which the child lives so spontaneously was made masterfully real by Ravel in his collection of pieces titled Ma mere l’Oye, in which he tries to render the emotions woken in him by the contemplation of the soul of childhood with all its enigmas, dreams and worries, without using the spoken word. Ravel wrote: “It was my intention to evoke the poetry of childhood, and this naturally led me to simplify my style and to refine my writing.”
Where would Little Red Riding Hood or Tom Thumb be without a forest to get lost in? La Maquiné presents The Forest of Grimm, a show without words, a staged album of eye-catching images inspired by the well-known stories: Tom Thumb, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty. An experience that takes place through music, puppets, objects and projections in a visual stage show for all ages that will lead us through multiple landscapes and emotions. A work to put to testwhat we remember of the timeless tales. After the success of its previous shows La Encina (“The Holm Oak”) and The Red Castle, La Maquiné has proven itself in the creation of high-quality shows with this new production of contemporary look where a dream-world of sensations, image, music and visual poetry is created.

REVIEW/THEATRE Molinari, Andres «The forest of Grimm" Source: IDEAL 25.05.12
A Continuous “Oh!” Like a hinge that opens and closes, this show closes the traditional season of Theatre for Schoolchildren that the Teatro Alhambra organizes during the mornings of the school year, and opens the no-less traditional International Festival of Puppets, by the same producer. And for both seasons it means the perfect end and beginning, discrete for its brevity yet bountiful in puppeteer discoveries and scenic wonder, just as with the music of Ravel, in places lightly reworked. The performance forschoolchildren, which Mariano Sánchez Pantoja presented succinctly as on every morning, proved in particular to be a festival of “Oh! Oh! Oh!”. Such were the visual surprises and the appearance of magicthat leapt from the stage to the stalls, on this occasion occupied by fewer students than usual, perhaps due to the tyrannous trials of the school year’s end. Forest without trees, red stars that fall from the screen to the floor, jumping frogs with the crownof a princess, wolves as wrinkled bin bags, walnuts as little cots of sleeping babies, and a never-ending parade of more characters that pass quietly through this tale that encapsulates in a dreamlike way many other tales of the Brothers Grimm. The long tail of Little Red Riding Hood, rippling with the reflexes of a ferocious wolf, the little satin shoe, the mirror of the doubting beauty, the enchanted house, the pea-sized boy who got lost. They are all brushstrokes of a large painting that every child must remember to put together again, as the undying subject of every story. Magnificently lit and arranged with a precise rhythm and enchantment palpable in every figure, in every puff of smoke and in every projection, whether of an immense moon or a vertiginous clock. Everything is as charming as it is enchanting, just like the forest to which the title alludes, far from the reach of children but indubitable master of theirimagination. And not only of children.
