Experience for children to imagine a world where everything can go faster – or slower. All elements, installations and artworks of the space are interconnected, either by the theme, the material or by the process involved in playing and creating. A series of creative, artistic experiences which continue to be developed in collaboration with artists and children. The Children’s Centre for Creativity believe in children’s ideas, for their innate competences and their ability to think and create in new ways.

Due to Gera’s financial restrictions, the cost of the project shall remain minimal. Use of recycled materials, temporary structures and flexible architecture allow for more innovative measures of exploration, while keeping costs low. Working towards the possibility of growth gives Gera the chance of having lasting, sustainable change. The 3 phases Step1 | 2017: ’Seeds’ are planted. Temporary elements are planted on four strategic locations. The site is divided into a grid generating plots. These are made available for free to interested participants. A supervised participation programme is conducted by the IBA pavilion. Step2 | 2023: Temporary or permanent? The project is assessed. After which, the more successful elements would remain and be made permanent, while others disappear. Step3 | 2030: City centre 2 Specialists of architecture, landscaping and urban planning observe and guide the programme development towards a sustainable ensemble. Density, building heights, accessibility and aesthetics are monitored. What was once a derelict land is transformed into a vibrant space. Welcome to Gera 2030!

A housing concept that focuses on promoting a higher possibility of interaction. Eventhough housing developments offer formal areas for communality, the 5-foot way, lift lobbies and corridoors still prove to be the more effective spaces in achieving this. This proposal utilises a system whereby the likelyhood of residents using formal interacting spaces is higher. These said spaces are inserted between units, at the end of corridoors and on the landscaping level. This also allows for a progressive continuity of green from the ground plane into the built form.

This project focused on one particular topic of tropical living which was weathering of materials. Instead of using this simply as an aesthetic effect or a facade condition, weathering in this project was a spatial organiser which determined the experiential qualities within the house. There is a distinct, weathered journey through the house which allows the user to appreciate how the natural environment has affected the building materials (primarily concrete). This journey alternates between exterior and interior conditions which results in a more unrestricted and open concept. It is through this manipulation of the boundary between the outside and inside where the user, in many instances, is able to interact with courtyards, patios and the landscape.

“To design a sustainable and environmentally-friendly villa on a remote Maldivian Island. The villa should give a strong sense of place, as well as providing luxurious and unique island experiences. This project introduces a new typology to high end resort luxury. Currently, many developments attempt to convince consumers that their resorts are traditional, authentic and tropical but these ideas do not translate strongly into the final design. Our design takes these three areas into more scrutiny and depth by using traditional techniques and materials, with the ultimate objective of a genuine island experience. It is how luxury and naturality coexist within the villa that defines its unique selling point.

“ many famous architects use movies to talk about architecture ” - Joe day This project began as an exploration of two film directors, Akira Kurosawa and Mira Nair. The four films that were used in this ‘film to architecture’ translation are seen below. Both directors showed a strong inclination towards how thresholds between two distinctions are defined. Kurosawa focused on creating artificial environments within controlled studio settings, while Mira Nair celebrated existing landscapes and conditions. Finding comprehensible commonalities and differences between the two directors, through the four movies, served as the basis of the project. The multiplex is manifested as a serpentine volume which finds its way through the existing archaeology of the site. This brings cinema goers up and down between two conditions, the curated sunken terrain and the existing urban landscape. This alternation creates a definitive journey across and into the created thresholds. The below ground environment embodies Kurosawan ideals of having isolated environments with highly dramatic spaces. The above ground, outward-looking component allows for maximum appreciation of the external cityscape, aggreable with the concerns of Mira Nair.

Objective
To create an exhibitory piece that sheds light onto the one room flat condition

Timeline
feb 2016 - may 2016
Flat Issues: Monologues & Dialogues is a project targeted at raising awareness on economic conditions, quality of life, and living spaces of one room flat typologies. We aim to create a glimpse into the lives of the people living there. The three main objectives are: 1) Demystify: To shed light on the issues, conceptions and relationships pertaining to the one room flats and the people. 2) Document: To capture the people and their stories and journeys. 3) Intervene: To provide a semblance of a social connection from one resident to another. Since the interviews were done mostly in an open ended format, we decided to extract several key issues that were brought up by a majority of the interviewees. Social The most apparent problem that has been sieved out of the interviews is the lack of (i) social trust between residents and (ii) social interaction. Majority of the residents have said to not know or interact with anyone else in the block and mostly keep to within the confines of their homes. There are several reasons as to why this might be the case. The public spaces in the block are very limited. Corridor spaces are dimly lit and uncomfortable to linger at. The only designated spaces of interaction would be the ground floor residents’ corner where there are seats and exercise equipment. However, residents who have been living in the block long enough would be aware of the notorious activities that occur in those spaces such as gambling and drinking. One resident has also reported that a murder had occurred during a gambling session in the past. As such, although there might be an apparent stigma of from outsiders towards the people living in 1-Room flats, there is also a strong distrust between residents themselves. Comfort A common issue that residents have said to face would be comfort issues such as sunlight and ventilation. Cross ventilation within units is very weak due to the double loaded corridor design and also an L-shaped layout of the units. Due to this, most units have to resort to leaving their front doors open to allow for increased airflow. However, in order to maintain privacy, they partially cover their front gate with cardboard or a curtain. For lighting, the units are very well lit during the day which many said to have reached uncomfortable. Ironically, when a resident exits his home, he enters a dimly lit corridor with minimal sunlight penetration. Government assistance Many residents also shed light into problems with government assistance. For example, one particular resident, who just received a promotion to a salary above $1500, now has to pay almost double for her rental flat. This leads to the recurring issues of entrapment in the poverty cycle and policies that appear logical on paper but when we view the actual impact on people, its success is doubtful. However, many have greatly benefitted from goverment subsidies and benefits due to the same policies.

memories allow me to own the things I never want to lose.
this is a family portrait of an elderly lady who let us into her house. the residents here are just like all of us, having dreams, families and aspirations.

district 14
we were slightly amused when we asked this lady for her workplace as she gave the reply, “district 14. after doing some research, we realised that singapore in the past was divided into districts, and number 14 referred to the region of eunos, geylang and paya lebar.
light and shade, order in chaos
spatial shortage is a common issue for many residents. truly, the -limit ed space results in increased clutter and chaos. but there are also units which are neat and minimalistic. does this mean the state of the apartment is only dependent on the state of mind of the occupants?
unit : 11-1126
companionship, medicine for the soul
miss ling, a terrapin lover owns eight terrapins which she keeps for pet therapy. She has suffered from depression since secondary four. miss ling was seen interacting with the uncle from the second floor and was very open and welcoming to us, to the point of being unnerving . she has had experience working as a nurse

horizontality in verticality
mrs tan, a jovial eighty year old stays with her brother. she passes her time by watching television and talking on the phone. she was previously living with her grand children and has stayed in this unit for ten years.
the view out from the balcony from block 170 shows an empty carpark, HDBs and a condo in the distance, a visual vertical transla tion of increasing living standards in the heartlands.
