“I had the very good fortune to work with Imran in a cinema-related studio I taught at SUTD in 2016. He contributed to the course in in myriad ways, both as an inspired designer and group leader of one of the strongest projects in the studio (theirs was the final crit - and a great closer), and in more daily, prosaic ways. Imran was a constant, positive and articulate presence from first day to last, and he’s got a great eye and command of new technologies (as well as an astute take on the film director Akira Kurosawa…). I recommend Imran highly and would be happy to confirm or expand on that praise if needed.” - Joe Day

This thesis expresses my long-standing interest in light and atmosphere. The project proposes a quantitative and qualitative method in museum/gallery design that centers itself in daylighting. The study targets the Art capital of Indonesia, Yogyakarta City, by choosing a site in its neighboring town, Kulon Progo Regency, that is facing major redevelopment. MusiumNur, takes on the idea of an outdoor sculpture park and reconceptualizes it into a gallery park where visitors meander through dramatic landscapes to visit different galleries and the various installations they encounter along the way. Each gallery caters to a specific artist, whose work and ideas have driven the initial concepts and lighting strategies. The six galleries remain humble in their form but at the same time, allow the designed landscape to be more dramatic and expressive. The various galleries now have individual characters and experiences, specifically in terms of their responses to natural light.

Setu Legi and his works are portrayed as particularly community centric and thus placed closely to the atrium, temporary exhibit and studio spaces. This gallery aims to be a pavillion-esque representation of a gallery. There will be a close connection to the landscape but a less dramatic lighting strategy.
Raden’s works are refined and expressionist whereas Affandi is known for his austerity and honesty in his portrayal of everyday life. Raden has a strong foundation in academic painting techniques whereas Affandi developed his own methods, some of which include painting with his fingers. The gallery aims to show a certain contrast between both camps which will show in its design of the gallery as well as the experience of viewing the artwork.
The works of Syagini to be used in this gallery revolves around the ideas of light, perception and colour. Her interest in surrealism will allow for a gallery that has a lighting quality that is fitting.
This gallery will serve as sort of an anti thesis to the Syagini gallery. The artwork involved here is of a projection of light through certain materials that create a caustic light effect. As such, this calls for a gallery that is low lit.
This gallery space will have a strong integration with the landscape. Visitors will be allowed to appreciate nature before proceeding to confront the artwork that talks about its preservation. The transition between the outdoor environment and indoor gallery will provide a sudden contrast between two environments of different light quality and mood.
The artwork by Joko will be placed in an outdoor environment with the backdrop of the Indian Ocean. This gallery will serve as the end of the entire sequence of art appreciation. The artwork is to be a gateway between the museum buildings and the untouched beach front.

This project focused on one particular topic of tropical living which was weathering of materials. Instead of using this simply as an aesthetic effect or a facade condition, weathering in this project was a spatial organiser which determined the experiential qualities within the house. There is a distinct, weathered journey through the house which allows the user to appreciate how the natural environment has affected the building materials (primarily concrete). This journey alternates between exterior and interior conditions which results in a more unrestricted and open concept. It is through this manipulation of the boundary between the outside and inside where the user, in many instances, is able to interact with courtyards, patios and the landscape.

A housing concept that focuses on promoting a higher possibility of interaction. Eventhough housing developments offer formal areas for communality, the 5-foot way, lift lobbies and corridoors still prove to be the more effective spaces in achieving this. This proposal utilises a system whereby the likelihood of residents using formal interacting spaces is higher. These said spaces are inserted between units, at the end of corridoors and on the landscaping level. This also allows for a progressive continuity of green from the ground plane into the built form.
