9 Tips for Training Your Hunting Dog FROM THE IOWA DNR WEBSITE If you’ve brought home a new puppy this year or want to teach some new skills to your hunting companion, check out these tips on training dogs for hunting. While there will always be variables based on the breed of dog, type of hunting and personal preference, these basics should help you prepare for a fun hunting season with your canine partner.
Get in the field – a lot.
The best learning for a hunting dog is by doing. Get your new dog on as many birds as possible their first season. Expose new dogs – in a comfortable setting – to as many sights, sounds, and smells as possible for the first few months, so they won’t be scared of those situations in the future.
Be consistent but not harsh.
When you give your dog a command, give praise when they follow through. If not, make them follow the command – too much leeway will only make training harder – but don’t be too harsh. Be patient but persistent.
Keep it real (and interesting).
Puppies Start with the basics.
Once your puppy is acclimated to its new home, start training by keeping it simple before moving on to more advanced hunting training – think sit, come, stay, heel. Don’t overdo it – at first, keep training sessions under 10 minutes and just a few times a day. Be consistent, use repetition, and give lots of praise to keep training fun and interesting for the puppy.
Be social.
Spend lots of time with your puppy, and be sure to introduce your pup to other people and dogs. Socializing your puppy is especially important if you plan to hunt with other people and dogs.
Make training scenarios as close to hunting in the field as you can. Don’t wait for opening day to take your pup on the duck boat for the first time, for example. But make sure it’s not just the same thing every time. Keep your dog guessing with different types of hunting training sessions so they don’t get bored.
Know your dog.
Be sure to keep things fun, as dogs can easily key in on your emotions. If you’re tired, frustrated and had a rough day, it’s not a good time to train your dog. Be ready to be patient and enthusiastic for an effective training session. Just as your dog can read your emotions, be able to know how your pup is feeling. If you see signs that your dog is scared, frustrated or bored, it’s time to wrap up training and try again another time.
Think about timing.
Consider what seasons you’ll want to hunt with your dog and what age you’d like the dog to be at its first hunt. For example, puppies born in the spring are about six to eight months old when pheasant season opens. It also gives plenty of time for basic training before the season starts.
Dogs and puppies new to hunting Do your homework.
Have a training plan and outline the goals you’d like to reach with your dog, so you can research the best ways to get there. By the time the season opens, your dog should know all the basic commands – like sit, stay, come, heel, etc. – and have had some work with retrieving and have been exposed to the sound of gunfire. Introduce the dog to decoys and calls long before the season starts. You may also want to have the dog work with live pen birds.
Go solo.
Try not to take a dog new to hunting out with other hunters and dogs at first – let the attention be on your dog so that you can give him or her lots of praise and time to work out the kinks. 6

Tip 1: Start simple
A cane pole is a good way for new anglers or kids to start fishing. Spin-casting gear is a simple rod and reel for kids. The next step is ultra-light spinning gear.
Tip 2: Lighten your line
Line that is 4 to 8-pound test will do the job; “pound test” is the amount of force it takes to break the line. Unless you’re targeting monster catfish or muskies, light line is your best bet.
Tip 3: Bag the big bobbers
Bobbers (or floats) are used to suspend your bait in the water and to alert you when to set the hook. The harder the bobber is to pull under, the harder it will be to hook a fish. Small floats will help convince the fish to take your tasty bait and run. “Slip” bobbers work well for kids. Slip bobber rigs cut down on the amount of line needed at the end of the rod and are easier to cast. Small ice fishing bobbers can provide a light touch any time of year.
Tip 4: Sink it with shot
Sinkers (or weights) help get your line down to the fish. They can also create “zero buoyancy.” Ideally, you want your bobber to just barely float on the top of the water. Squeeze small BB-sized split shot sinkers onto your line, one at a time, until your bobber nearly sinks from the weight. Since there is very little resistance when the fish takes the bait, it is more likely to bite the bait and run.
Tip 5: Small hooks = big catches
Use hook sizes 6 to 10 (size 6 is larger than size 10). Fish won’t readily take large hooks unless they are feeding like crazy. A subtle presentation is often needed to catch wary fish. Tiny hooks also allow small fish to “inhale” the bait, rather than nibble the bait off the hook. If a fish swallows the hook and you want to return the fish to the water, simply cut the line as close to the hook as possible and release the fish. For a safer hook, smash down the barb with pliers or use barbless hooks.
Tip 6: Great big gobs of worms won’t do
There’s no need to use whole, whopping-big, writhing night
crawlers on your hook. Live bait such as red worms, wax 12
worms (bee moth larvae) or crickets work best. Keep the bait approximately the size of your hook, so the fish is less likely to steal your bait. You can also cut the bait to fit your hook. When you’re finished with the bait, give to another angler, bring home for the next trip, or throw it in the trash. Never dump your bait into the water.
Tip 7: Fish Local
The best way to make someone an angler is to show them
where they can fish close to home. Regardless of whether it’s a Go FishIN in the City park or a retention pond in your neighborhood, show them where they can fish that doesn’t require a lot of travel time. There is no need for taxis. The Puerto Paraiso shopping mall is across the street. All of the downtown attractions and stores are only a five-minute walk. This condo has two bedrooms, plus den, living room, dining room, fully equipped kitchen, laundry with washer and dryer, two and 1/2 baths and 400 square foot roof top private sun-deck. There is even a commercial grade vacuum sealer for packing your catch. The condo is in a secure private residential complex. We must limit the number of guests, and require them to maintain the quiet, private ambiance of the complex. Note: No unaccompanied young people during Spring Break.
