MFU Community Engagement:

From Research for Better Living Communities in Thailand With the determination to fulfill HRH Princess Srinagarindra’s intention of developing people and promoting healthcare, Mae Fah Luang University has committed itself to providing academic and healthcare services for the community by engaging students and

staff in several University Social Responsibilities (USR) activities in order to improve the quality of life of the people not only in the nation, but also in regions. Therefore, there are several cases to share as follows: I. MFU Cooperates with AIS in Setting up PM2.5 Monitoring Devices in Chiang Rai To monitor and cope with PM2.5 pollution problem in Chiang Rai province, the Center of Excellence in AI and Emerging Technologies (AIE), the School of Information Technology in collaboration with the Advanced Info Service Public Company Limited (AIS) have developed “M-Care”, a PM2.5 measuring device using the Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and DEVIO NB-SHIELD I.

II. Collaboration with University of Michigan for Electronic Waste Management On 14-17 December 2019, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kowit Nambunmee, a lecturer from the Occupational Health and Safety programme, the School of Health Science, MFU and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Richard Nietzel from the School of Public Health, University of Michigan, USA visited Khok Sa-at, Khong Chai District, Kalasin province, Thailand to do research on the appropriate and effective health and safety management for e-waste recycling workers. III. Medical and Dental Services for Chiang Rai People On 13 January 2020, School of Integrative Medicine, MFU and the Princess Mother’s dental service project joined the Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer Foundation to provide medical and dental services for the general public at the Queen Sirikit 72nd Jubilee Sport Arena, MFU. IV. Cooperation with the Office of the National Water Resources for Transboundary Water Resources Management On 27 January 2020, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chayaporn Wattanasiri, President of Mae Fah Luang University and Dr. Somkiat Prajamwong, the Secretary-General of the Office of the National Water Resources signed MoU for the joint assessment of Thailand and Myanmar on flood and drought for transboundary water resources management project which is allocated 10 million baht (2,450,000 CNY) from the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund, P.R. MFU Commencement Ceremony for Academic Year 2018 On 26 February 2020, MFU had the great honour of receiving Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, on behalf of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun, presided over MFU’s commencement ceremony for the Academic Year 2018 at the C4 Princess Mother Auditorium, MFU. This year’s commencement marked the th 17 graduation of MFU and also celebrated the first batch of graduates from the School of Medicine. In total, there were 2,816 Thai and 105 international graduates. This year, MFU presented an Honorary Doctorate in Social Sciences to Somdet Phra Maha Rajjamangalamuni (Thongchai Dhammadhajo), a member of Sangha Supreme Council and the Assistant Abbot of Wat Traimit Withayaram Worawihan, and an Honarary Doctorate in International Relations to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vanchai Sirichana, the Founding President of Mae Fah Luang University.

New Species of Auricularia Discovered by MFU Researchers A new species of Auricularia (locally called Hed Hoo Noo) “Auricularia thailandica” has been discovered by Professor Dr. Kevin David Hyde, Director of the Center of Excellence in Fungal Research (CEFR) at Mae Fah Luang University and his researcher team.

Moreover, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has bestowed the official name of this new species to be “Musikarat.” The Auricularia species is edible and can be grown commercially. Therefore, the Center of Excellence in Fungal Research is planning to introduce prototype and offer workshop on mushroom cultivation for Thai farmers.


MFU Young University Leaders Project (MFU-YUL 2020)

To strengthen management skills for MFU executives, the “MFU Young University Leaders Project� has been organized by Global Relations Division (GRD) on 9 January - 25 May 2020 at Mae Fah Luang University. The four-month programme has been initiated to help 27 young executive members from 13 Schools prepare for leadership roles by coaching them develop knowledge and skills in strategically planning, university policies and regulations, leadership, human resources development, and internationalization. This programme is divided into four parts; 1) workshop training, 2) study visit, 3) group work, and 4) group work presentation. During the interactive group work, participants have an abundance of opportunities to exchange their perspectives and work together towards new projects or strategies to develop practical solutions that are suitable for promoting an efficient university administration and improving academic management. 17 January 2020 Dean, School of Health Science Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rachanee Sunsern was chosen for the “Person of the Year 2020” award to mark her achievement in the Management and Organizational Development category by the Thai Awards Committee.

2-6 February 2020 Lecturer, School of Medicine Mr. Arnon Jumlongkul, M.D. received the Invention Award for his work called “Robotic Autopsy Saw” in the Thailand Inventors’ Day 2020 held by the National Research Council of Thailand.

6-7 June 2020 Students, School of Information Technology Mr. Tanyawut Chaloempong, Mr. Pasit Yooto and Mr. Nawin Denduang won the first prize with an award of 120,000 baht for their “Pet Guard” application in the Tech Startup Entrepreneurs Camp at Rangsit University, Bangkok.

Student Activities 2-6 December 2019 Thai-China Youth Exchange Programme 10 MFU students had an opportunity to exchange perspective and gain a better understanding in various aspects of China especially culture and economic with Chinese students at Yunnan Minzu University, P.R. China.

11 December 2019 Study Abroad in Germany MFU students and lecturers attended the “Scholarship & Study abroad by DAAD Thailand”, the event was held at MFU with an up-to-date information about research funding and study abroad opportunities in Germany.

21-22 February 2020 Student Exchange Activity 10 MFU students and 10 Rikkyo University students learned and enhanced a better understanding of Japan’s and Thailand’s cultural and economic aspects through a special lecture on the overview of business and economics.
