GALLERY IN THE CLOUDS

Born during the confinement period, Children of Cyberspace brings together a community of artists, programmers, researchers, cultural institutions, immersive architects and virtual scenographers. This union of new thinkers aims to develop a basis that allows digital works to be exhibited in their original formats. Independent of social networks and their ruthless algorithms, Children of Cyberspace offers immersive and multi-sensory experiences in virtual worlds.

This virtual world is a galaxy made up of planets and asteroids. The planets are home to exhibitions commissioned by our partner institutions featuring the works of invited artists. The void

between these planets is a virtual public space, where any digital creator is free to exhibit his works.

The exhibitions can be shown online freely and from any computer, or using a virtual reality headset. These exhibitions also have the capacity to be displayed locally, in a physical space, thanks to an immersive projection system or even by interactive installations combining VR and interactive sculptures connected to the virtual world.

The infrastructure of this virtual space is also used for educating about the tools and processes of digital creation as well as contemporary art, through hands on workshops and live guided tours. Thanks to this virtual world, we have set in motion a pedagogical method to organize workshops for children as well as university students.

Within this universe, we have dedicated some spaces to exhibit the outcome of workshops that teaches about 3D modelling, programming and game design.

Children of Cyberspace will open in November an online exhibition space where artists and digital creators from all horizons are free to exhibit their works.

It is a constantly evolving, participatory work of art, which establishes its own identity and aesthetic in the void of Cyberspace.

TOWARD A NEW AESTHETIC

There is a need for artists to be part of a community and share their creations with others, without being harassed by rating algorithms. Our new virtual space is made for the sole purpose of promoting these multi-sensory languages that create a sense of “Cybernetic Serendipity”.

Arash Akbari is a music producer and new-media artist, based in Tehran, Iran. His interest in dynamic art systems, nonlinear narrative and the co-existence between physical and digital worlds compelled him to explore the fields of generative systems, interaction design, and real-time processing.

Akbari directs his experimental practices into audio-visual performances and installations, interactive applications and multisensory experiences.

His music compositions include field recordings, musical instruments, digital synthesis, DSP and noise.

His works have been exhibited in different festivals and exhibitions around the world, such as Athens Digital Arts Festival, 3D Web Fest, SetFest Tehran, Cinnamon Colomboscope and Graphical Web Conference. Before we are Amural team, we are artists. And we miss our playground în the woods of Brasov.

The real Black Tower is an XVI century building, surrounded by forest and protecting the old citadel. In 1996 it got a glass pyramid as a roof, making it strangely esoteric.

The Cyblack Tower here has been built out of polygons in the past two weeks. It can bend and do tricks and is a nice part of the process of digitalizing our festival.

AMURAL Festival Vizual is a celebration of the eye above all other senses. The Black Tower is the symbol of our festival, the place where we finish every day for a night of partying. A medieval tower is invaded by visuals and becomes a totem for freedom, dance and imagination. So when In-Dialog invited us to their Digital Gallery, we went YASS! “Let’s push things forward” as The Streets say. Let’s recreate our favourite Black tower.

Patrick Morris is a Swiss-based visual artist and lighting designer. He graduated from the Architectural Association in 2015 London. After freelancing for United Visual Artist and Universal Assembly Studio, he recently co-founded an all-purpose lighting studio: iiode.

He has been commissioned to create interactive and multi-sensory installations in performance, exhibition, outdoor festivals,and venues across the UK and Europe.

These include the Roundhouse, Barbican centre, Royal Festival Hall, Sadler’s Well Theatre, Nuit Blanche Paris, Swiss Design Awards.

His practice is influenced by the omnipresence of technology and how it impacts our perception of space. He exploits the power of light and treats it as if it is a physical body, a material to construct and a common denominator that links all forms of life.

Eleonore is an immersive architect who lives and works in the UK. Having watched way too many cartoons when she was young, she fell into her TV and hasn’t been able to come out of the animated world since. Her latest work includes the design of the first ever interactive pop-up experience for BBC studios©. She is part of The Growing, an evergreen craft-tank rooted in architecture and branching across fields of performance, design and illustration.

Louis is a sound engineer based in Paris who spent the past 10 years in music studios. He worked in post production for cinema and video games, as a foley artists recorder and sound designer. On stage, in a studio, for an exhibition or in a forest, Louis seeks rare sounds and aims at recreating this organic randomness in his work. He writes generative music (or musical programming), aiming to build objects that will create musical sequences, regulated by either defined or random algorithms.

Lebensraum a.k.a Chusy is a creative technologist, researching and exploring where technology and art come together. Currently, he is based in Berlin, Germany but is originally from Barcelona, Spain. While in Barcelona, he obtained a degree in Media and Computer Science from the Pompeu Fabra University Barcelona. This served as a fundamental introduction to the power of technology and provided him with an overview of the possibilities technology provides to artists, in order to express themselves. The recent pandemic development has caused this world to quickly dive into a cautionary state. Many find themselves in an unfamiliar, perhaps even uncomfortable setting, as our daily vital space has been completely reshaped - the space with oneself, with one’s partner, flatmates, friends or family. This change in spatial existence requires a new period of conditioning, most importantly a new set of boundaries. With the lack of physical barriers and open space, we have to draw imaginary borders to protect our daily vital space.

WELCOME TO

Planet LEV is a world born in the nebulas of cyberspace. Built of vertices and quads, it was shaped in millions of cycles out of pure terrain data to resemble the world you see today. The dominant species of this planet are the Nimis, sentient beings that are the most renown collectors in cyberspace. Their love for arts has made them dedicate their whole planet to the beauty of creative expression.

As you walk along the horreo habilis, the homes of Nimis, you might catch the giant in action, pass through digital storms, wander in biodomes, or find other artworks until you lose yourself in the canyons. One last piece of advice: beware of the diva trees, they tend to have strong attitudes.

At the core of this planet lies a temple, dedicated to AV performances, whose dome rests half buried amidst the stones. On its walls, artists project live performances while the sounds of their electronic music resonate all the way to the surface, making the whole atmosphere vibrate to those rhythms.

When you decide to end your journey, don’t forget to pass by the desert to leave your trace and plant a tree that will stay until the last cycle of the planet.

Planet LEV-Matadero is an immersive art experience created by the Children of Cyberspace, available in both Virtual Reality and on Web browsers. This dream-like universe hosts animated sculptures with sound installations, as well as concerts and live audio-visual performances of artists from all around the world. The whole Planet LEV is an immersive stage, where those happenings are taking place in real time. The virtual scenery has been inspired by the Asturian landscape, home of the LEV Festival.
