The night of the Christmas party is always a buzz with excitement, slight apprehension and usually full of empty promises. Promises like ‘I won’t get as drunk as last year’ is always well intended but with free flowing drink, the carnal beat of the dance floor and before you know it, you wake up hung over, still in last night’s clothes with vague memories of telling your boss exactly what you thought of them. Awkward! You will be glad to know, according to recent research, this behaviour is more formulaic than you think. xperts are now claiming that regardless of the job or location, every office party will feature some of the same ten characters. That’s right folks, the venue will move each year, the music will be different, but the type of people that turn up will be ever the same. So who are you?
The Flirt Their conversations until now have seemed fairly innocent, but the addition of alcohol and a relaxed situation reveals that innocence was the furthest thing from their mind. They make inappropriate advances on you all evening, and short of running away and not looking back, there will be very little you can do to avoid them.
Clare McDonald explores the who’s who of the office party shenanigans. And her top tip to the festive season is: If you were fired from your previous job for inappropriate Christmas Party doings, then it’s probably safer for you to avoid the festivities altogether! Go drink, be merry and for goodness sake if you can’t be good, be careful! The Office Party - Who are You
The Peak-Too-Sooner They claim to be the hard-core drinker and all round fun-guy. Unfortunately, they drink too much too soon, dance a little too frivolously and are then found later collapsed under a table. Not a good look.
Houdini This young-un often appears to be full of excitement about the events, having helped organise and set up the supercool disco. When the party starts, they’re nowhere to be found, having skipped saying goodbye to avoid the barrage of pleading for a dance and abuse that the music isn’t good enough. Page 8 The Christmas Issue
The Dancer They always thought they could be the next Louis Spence, but are ten years too late, with no talent. They’ll be the first to enter the dance floor and the last to leave as they boogie their way through the night styling moves like John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever.
The Blabbermouth
The Dark Horse It’s likely you won’t know this person too well, since they normally keep themselves to themselves. Once they get into the party spirit, however, they’ll divulge all about their secret past, their inappropriate hobbies and break out dance moves you’ll wish you’d never seen. It will become perfectly clear why you’ve never spoken to them before.
Alcohol can send even the best employee into a downward spiral. The blabbermouth is no exception, usually the epitome of discretion, they know too much, and with the alcohol oiling the hinges of their mouths, will spout company secrets and office romances like they were twitter updates.
The Limpet As if they don’t do enough sucking-up all year round, this keen bean will decide there’s nothing better than a social event to pack in some extra flattery, only to be spurned by their boss, who leaves early. The Limpet will be heartbroken, and compete with The Weeper for your shoulder to cry on.
The Weeper The weeper will use any venue or occasion to release their woes upon the rest of the work force. Their tear-chocked sobs can be heard coming from the bathrooms from party kick-off, so it may be best to go elsewhere if you want to avoid a half an hour story about how their secret office heart throb never notices them.
The Gatecrasher
The Organiser They have the venue, drinks, food and itinerary for the evening down to a T and will angrily argue-down anyone with a different opinion. After all, they want everyone to have FUN, and that’s an order!
An uninvited friend of one of the other guests, who will breeze in pretending that they belong. They’re under the impression that since they don’t work in your office, they’re bringing with them a breath of fresh air and much needed enthusiasm as they attempt to cheer up The Weeper whilst helping themselves to the free bar.
So before you send Karen from Accounts into a crying frenzy by naming and shaming, take a good look at yourself. It may be better to play it safe this year and cut down on the JD & Coke but who ever you are, remember to rock it like it’s 1964! Merry Christmas! Words By Clare McDonald

December’s days are not only short but also wet and miserable. To be honest, my morning run through the Essex countryside is now a chore. Long, boring and muddy. As I stagger home sodden the temptation of a comfort eating Mince Pie or Quality Street is just too much! The London Marathon just seems too far in the distance for me to be worrying about what I eat. I am desperately trying to swerve calorific roast dinners and my festive social calendar is shouting: ‘Overflowing!’ So this year, I am NOT going to feast upon everything in sight and start a fad diet New Year’s Day. This year, I have a plan and have enlisted the guidance of my good friend Joe from Peak Performance. Under the misconception that a personal trainer is only for those who want to look like Hulk Hogan, Joe devised a training program to keep me on track. I learn’t very quickly that the pain which follows any confession of eating Quality Street, certainly takes away any pleasure!
RuNNING IS ExtREMELy boRING! Honestly, it is. So Joe devised a little interval training session to mix it and keep me focused. Interval training is brilliant for improving the cardiovascular system. It pushes more oxygenrich blood through the body which, as the intervals change, the muscles get better at using the oxygenated blood and your running stride becomes more efficient as the coordination between muscles and nervous system improves. Bored yet? Don’t think you are getting away with being festive coach potatoes! Joe has devised a ‘Lets Get Started’ plan, just for you.
Week 1 - Lets Get Started Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
10 min walking steady pace. Walk up hill & down for 10 mins steady pace Rest day Core work 1 min jog, 1 min walk. Repeat x10 Rest day Rest day
And as a bonus, if any iN Mag readers mention this article, Joe will give you 25% DISCOUNT from your first training package. Now you have no excuse! TRy bEfoRE yoU bUy eorgette and Billy Smith founders of Dingvideo, an online video directory, found love in the lush green fields of Raindance many moons before the patter of tiny feet were on the horizon. Now living in the Essex countryside, their family lives seem far removed from their wild roots. But how did their paths cross, and where did the magic begin? How long have you and Billy been together and how did you meet? We met at a Raindance 22 years ago and have been married for 16 years. Billy was a showman from the fair ground which was so far removed from my boarding school background, but we just worked. We had the same interests, made each other laugh and fitted together like a puzzle. He loved festivals and so did I, so we spent many of our tender years exploring them together, (laughs) we have some stories to tell!
Where did your brainchild ‘Dingvideo’ evolve from? From the festivals really. We loved the creativeness and the free-spirited vibe they stood for. We initially launched a mobile catering business which we took to all the festivals; our pleasure was our work! Every day we were inspired by great bands, amazing acts and thought provoking entertainment. We thought it would be fantastic to be able to view these incredible performers from the comfort of a computer, especially if you were in an event management business. How amazing would it be to be able to see an act before you committed. This is where the idea was born. As the years progressed we started trying for a family, we knew our carefree life of festivals was no longer an option. It gave us the opportunity to ignite Dingvideo.
Where did the name arise?
DingVideo is the ‘Ideas’ Website not happy with the technology and functionality of the end product. We knew it had flaws, it just didn’t flow as it should, but then we had learn’t so much along the way. We kept saying to each other: ‘Hmm this should lead there, this needs to flow here.’ We resided to the fact that although we had spent thousands of pounds, it needed a pair of fresh eyes. So we researched the top web designers in the country and set up a meeting. ‘Webwax’ were incredible and only in Chelmsford which was a bonus! They took our ideas and gave us a new direction. The rebrand to Dingvideo fitted the new look. It also explains more about what we do. Ding signifies a thought and video is what we do.
Can you tell us a little bit about the business? There are two sides of the Dingvideo. Businesses use it as a tool to promote themselves or even to look for applicants for a position in the company. You can’t ever get a feel of what people are like, or even sound like, from a CV. The viewers use Dingvideo as a useful video directory so they can see before they try. It is essential, especially in this climate, to see what you are getting before you spend your hard earned money. We have a huge amount of traffic for holiday destinations, hotels, ski chalets and resorts. Another popular area of the website is our Whats On section. There are a plethora of attractions for the kids: theme parks, summer festivals, zoos, soft-play centres, ski and water parks. Our site is also useful for event planners. You can get a feel for an act from the videos before you book. There are many categories: bands, magicians, tribute acts, look-a-likes, DJ’s in action. The list is endless.
What has been the most challenging aspect of the business? Realising the original website didn't look and feel how we envisaged. We are now so excited by Dingvideo as it is exactly how we want it to look and feel. Businesses are uploading videos every day. Is it expensive to use? It’s FREE! Totally free! We know all businesses and viewers will find it useful, just look us up and everyone take advantage of our site. Dingvideo is here, free, for you all.
We started the creation of the site back in 2009. My son got stung by nettles in the garden and came up to me and said: ‘Mummy the Dingwuddles have got me!’ His little face was so innocent, it was such an adorable moment, so this was where the original name was born. We worked with the name Dingwuddles and our website was created. As the website grew, so did our ideas. Billy and I were

inn Cleaning Collection & Delivery covers all of Essex and East London. Book a collection over the phone, Twitter, Face Book and even Blackberry Messenger (BBM) and we will drive to your door at a time convenient to you. We will collect, take your garments to Vinn Cleaners to be wet cleaned and then deliver them back to you. No more forgetting to collect your garments - your garment care is in excellent hands. And if you need a tailor, we have that covered too. The cleaning industry has surrounded my life for twenty years. As a child I would help in my fathers shop on Saturdays and after school. My father, Rasheed Shaikh taught me all there was to know about the industry. Following our family tradition, I launched my first dry cleaning business when I was 23, in Walthamstow. I quickly expanded with another in Woodford and Chigwell. During the past five years the internet has undoubtedly had a detrimental effect on the high street; a decline in footfall, problematic parking and increased rent are all issues shop owners are experiencing. During this time my parents retired; it made business sense to sell both businesses and settle into my fathers unit in Hoe Street, Walthamstow. As shopping trends changed, I knew I had to be ahead of the times. I researched other European countries to see garment cleaning was operated abroad.
Wet cleaning was having a massive eect on the industry; garment care using water and biodegradable specialist detergent, which was not only kind to the garment but also kind to your skin. I knew this was my answer. Wet cleaning excited me, it was new and beneficial. Dry cleaning solution is a toxic chemical and dangerous to work with. A small percentage of chemical is also left on the clothing. Many global states have or are due to ban the use of dry cleaning detergents due to law suits surrounding health and safety. Wet cleaning is the way forward. Electrolux are the main factory in Luton who manufacture the Lagoon wet cleaning machines, so I had a look at how they Page 30 The Christmas Issue
operated. The finished article had the wow factor. Each garment smelt fresh and the finished result was impressive and better than I had ever seen. I was satisfied that this was the future in garment care but needed to see the Lagoon system in operation. I visited other cleaning businesses who all voiced that it was not only safe for their employees, the finished article had a better clean. When a garment is dry cleaned, a small amount of chemical remains on the clothing and body odor isn’t totally eradicated. Wet cleaning uses a biodegradable detergent which is safe for people with sensitive skin, animals and smelt fresh. Washing in water is the best way to diminish stains and odors. Since going over to wet cleaning the positive response we have had has been incredible and opened up many avenues. We can now clean garments with plastic or rubber buttons or sequins and studs. Previously, the chemical would have been so harsh it would have melted plastic. Horse rugs have become popular due to our cleaning being chemical free. As the results were seen, word has spread.
So the next five years? Our collection and delivery will be expanding. We have Essex and the East side of London wrapped up, but watch out for our vans as we will be coming to north London and other parts of Hertfordshire very soon. So, bag up some of your clothes and give Vinn Cleaners a call. We will book a collection, return date and time convenient to you and give you the best customer service you could ever imagine! Merry Christmas everyone.

And so, he entered into the world of performing arts very early on. At just four and a half years of age, Julian gave his first show. by the time Julian was thirteen, he was granted a performing permit to entertain the crowds at London's Covent Garden (the youngest ever to have earned such a licence). At his live performances Julian pushes the boundaries of 'mystery arts' through a unique style and approach to capturing his audience. I set out to meet Julian to find out more...
iN: What exactly is your book Confidence Explosion about? JJ: It’s about returning to the full awareness of our intrinsic worth. You see, confidence is our natural state. It's the way we were when we emerged into the world. This primal sense of aliveness is our birthright. We only feel inadequate through conditioning. Have you ever seen a baby suffering with self-esteem issues? Babies, by their very nature, are absolutely confident. They are fully engaged with the vibrancy of life. They don't suffer from self doubt as those responses are programmed into us later on. Babies accept who they are unconditionally. If they want something, they take action. There's no uncertainty. There's no self-loathing. They don't have that nagging voice inside that says: ‘I can't do it’ or ‘what will others think of me?’
Confidence is our natural state. It's the way we were when we emerged into the world. iN: So where does the conditioning happen? JJ: Basically, we get sent off to this place called 'school' a place in which uniformity, conformity and reflexive obedience preside over true individual self-expression. I remember a teacher once shouting at me in the classroom, ‘Julian, look at Richard. You really should be more like him!’ And, in many ways, this is what school does to young impressionable minds - it tells us that we should be more like 'other people', which implies that being who we are isn't enough. We're told to sit down, shut up and pay attention to the authority figure standing at the front of the room, who (apparently) knows all the answers. And if we dare to challenge what's being rammed into our heads, not only are we told that we're wrong, we're punished as well. Over time we learn that all the answers are outside of us. Our own interior sense of intuitive wisdom is stifled, to the point where we almost stop looking inside altogether. We learn not to become more of who we are, but to become who others tell us to be. So by the time most of us have left formal education, a great deal of our inner certainty has literally been beaten out of us. Not the best way to sustain a solid sense of self-confidence, is it! So it's really no surprise that most adults are plagued and paralysed with feelings of fear and powerlessness, because they've been told for years and years that being who they are isn't enough!
one of the greatest lies of our time is that we are incomplete; that there's something missing inside of us. iN: So how do we forget all this and attain our true confidence? JJ: This requires us to see through the illusions of mass conditioning. We need to destroy all the lies we've been told about who we are and come home to the realisation of our own inherent significance. This is a great challenge in Western Society. The world tells us that we are not whole and complete, just as we are. It tells us we have to strive to gain the approval of others and that self-worth can only be gained through acquisition – the accumulation of 'stuff'. So we work harder and harder, literally burning ourselves out so to acquire things we think will fill this 'void'. And this is the greatest lie of them all; it's one huge illusion. Because the truth is that we are complete, right now, in this very moment.
There is nothing missing in us. We were complete at the very moment of our birth and that was when we owned no possessions at all. There's nothing we need from outside of us to be whole, because we are already whole. Wholeness is our fundamental essence. iN: But we all live in a consumer-driven world, is it possible to ignore this? JJ: Our consumer-driven world tells us we have to attain a certain 'status' before we can really be comfortable with who we are. It tells us there are certain things we must do before we can feel a sense of inner worthiness. And the real problem isn't that these toxic message are out there, the problem is that we choose to believe them! So confidence isn't something we need to 'get', because it's already at the core of us. Confidence is something we need to reclaim; it's something we need to reawaken. My private mentoring is fundamentally about revitalising this sense of certainty, composure and inner conviction that lies at the very centre of who we are.
When your confidence is based on what’s outside of you, your sense of security will always be tentative and unstable, because what’s outside of you is always subject to change. but when your confidence is based on what’s inside of you, you generate an internal stability that is permanent and unwavering, because the truth of who you are never changes. My clients are able to operate from their own power, no longer feeling uncomfortable or afraid to express their uniqueness. They're able to move through the world embracing the totality of their existence, without apologising for who they are. And, to me, this is real magic because when we are like this - when we function from this awakened sense of being - giving a presentation before 200 people, asking for a pay rise, or starting a conversation with someone that we'd like to get to know, becomes effortless, even a joy. We can ask for what we want, without fear of what the other person might say, because we realise that someone else's response to us doesn't define who we are. We realise there's nothing we need from them to make us whole, because wholeness is our intrinsic truth. iN: How exactly do you work with clients in your private mentoring programme? JJ: The answer is: very differently. The Christmas Issue Page 33

I literally take my clients out into the open, which is where the fun begins. You can think of this as a kind of special 'field trip', full to the brim with all kinds of learnings, interactions and unexpected surprises. I work with lots of people who feel awkward in social situations. For example, a client came to me and just wanted to be able to walk into a room and simply be comfortable. He signed up for my ‘Extreme Confidence Breakthrough’ elite mentoring programme. For a weekend, I took him to as many different situations that you could imagine: restaurants, hotels, parks, museums, shops and on the London Underground. The whole time, I worked with him to unwind and dismantle many of the toxic unconscious processes that were stopping him from being the way he wanted to be. These included the specific ways where he held tension inside his body and the patterns of thought which constricted his behaviour. I taught him how to use his voice, breathe and body in totally different ways. I showed him how to be comfortable being uncomfortable. I demonstrated how all the things that had kept him restricted and fearful were merely illusions; and I showed him how to destroy them.
Very quickly, a new world of possibility opened up before him. And by the time Sunday evening came around, a massive transformation had taken place. this man had probably experienced more positive social encounters than he'd had his entire life. Page 34 The Christmas Issue
And the ones that weren't so positive simply didn't affect him. He even made some exciting new friends. He was literally astounded with what he'd accomplished. There was a certain 'glow' about him that was unmistakable. And because we had removed many of the limiting beliefs which had been holding him back for so long, it was impossible for him to revert back to the way he was when we met on the Friday. So much had taken place, and so much had impacted him on a very deep level. This is the sheer power of my mentoring process. iN: How would you describes yourself? A 'creator and destroyer of illusions': I create illusions through the mind magic which I share with my audiences, and I destroy the 'cultural illusions' I've been talking about. The venomous untruths that hold us back from being who we really are, by directly exposing them. And, of course, once we see the illusions for what they are, they lose their hold over us. This allows us to simply be present to the world – embodying our deepest essence – feeling the sensation of the very aliveness of our spirit.

A review
By Sally Kitchener
ainer Becker, the creator and founding force of Zuma and Roka restaurants, opened Oblix, located on the 32nd floor of The Shard in London, in May. Moving away from Japanese cuisine and culture for the first time in over a decade, the Oblix offers a dual dining experience: Oblix Restaurant and Oblix Bar & Lounge.

i uphold the opinion that one should always decide whether they like a certain restaurant, play or hotel for themselves rather than take heed of the critics - the scourge of modern social networking, ‘Trip Advisor’. i have personally felt both sides of alleged reviews which come with the territory of being a former restauranteur and therefore felt within my comfort zone to offer a honest review of the Oblix.
blix Restaurant offers a formal affair using a New York grill as a backdrop for the menu with dishes delivered in the Becker signature style of upscale, sophisticated, urban dining which was naturally very good, although a tad pricey for what was offered. If you prefer a somewhat stuffier ambience then you will sit comfortably in the restaurant surroundings. The chefs all work in an open plan kitchen and there are many staff, which cause somewhat of a distraction when trying to engage in conversation. Although some people may like the attention, I found it unnecessarily intrusive. Oblix Bar & Lounge is an entirely different affair. Although both restaurants are situated on the 32nd floor of the Shard, the lounge, in my opinion, boasts finer views with a more informal and welcoming aura. Now, either I had sipped too many cocktails or the proximity of my table to the window (and the sheer drop below) was sending me slightly squiffy. I was pleasantly distracted by the overly gorgeous barmen doing all sorts of things with a block of ice. It would seem there are no ice machines here! The waitresses wore on-trend dresses designed by Ted Baker and Annabel. The manager seemed to have an impeccable eye for detail; sheer charm personified as she wandered from table to table ensuring all Oblix guests needs were met. In addition to the à la carte lunch and dinner menu in the restaurant, the bar and lounge showcased an abundant selection of appetisers at lunchtime. Think New York delicatessen. Weekends offer a brunch menu, accompanied by live music to set the scene. A full à la carte menu is available for dinner seven nights a week and sees live music played most evenings and although the menu is not extensive, my meal was sumptuous and the waiting staff knowledgeable. The Chef himself visits Borough Market each morning to ensure only the best quality produce is served.

The Oblix Bar & Lounge comes highly recommended and is most definitely well worth a visit. Level 32, The Shard, 31 St Thomas Street, London Se1 9rY. 020 7268 6700 The Christmas Issue Page 37

he Ferrari 458 Speciale will be lighter, faster and easier to drive on the limit than the car that it is based on. With 596bhp, the new car’s engine is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 that Ferrari has ever built and, with 398lb ft of pulling power, it delivers the most torque, too. These figures mean the supercar can reach 0-62mph in 3 seconds and 0-124mph in 9.1 seconds.
Much work focussed on reducing the engine’s internal friction with new pistons and con-rod bushings. The engine lost around 8kg of weight thanks to a revised intake with carbonfibre plenums and air-filter box as well as a new aluminum exhaust system. Adding to the performance are active aerodynamics that help the Ferrari cut through the air on the straights and grip hard in the corners.
The extra power (up from 562bhp) comes thanks to a raft of engine changes, which Ferrari is keen to point out come courtesy of its experience in Formula 1. The revisions include a compression ratio that has been increased to 14:1 (the highest value achieved by any naturally aspirated V8), a new cam profile, plus improved engine breathing thanks to revised intake ducts and higher valve lift.
The front of the car features three flaps - one horizontal and two vertical - that stay closed at relatively low speeds, to channel air to the radiators.
Page 40 The Christmas Issue
At speeds in excess of 105mph, the vertical flaps open to cut drag, while the horizontal flap follows suit at speeds above 135mph to shift 20 percent of downforce to the rear. Turning vanes in the front bumper and ahead of the rear wheels, a new rear spoiler, as well as repositioned tailpipes also help to increase downforce and aid cornering. Maranello’s main aim with the Speciale was to build a car that was easy to drive quickly and consistently even for the amateur racer. To help achieve this, the Speciale comes loaded with technology that includes Side Slip Control (SSC), which makes the Ferrari easier to control on the limit by monitoring slip angles and regulating the car’s traction control and E-Diff, to maximise its response times. Add to those suspension that features new magnetic dampers, and Michelin Sport Cup 2 tyres that were specifically designed for the Speciale and the result is a car that can pull 1.33g in the corners. More than any other road-going Ferrari. With all this focus on performance, it’s hardly surprising that the supercar can be purchased complete with a telemetry system that monitors its performance over a set route. Data can then be downloaded onto a PC or Mac, allowing the Virtual Track Engineer to give feedback on the driver’s performance.
Words By Russell Campbell
The car’s brakes have also been given the once over and are based on those used in the firm’s new ultra car - the La Ferrari. They feature Extreme Design Callipers, new-generation HT2 discs and smaller pads made from HY hybrid material. The net result is an impressive 62-0mph braking distance of 101ft. Aside from the numerous exterior aerodynamic revisions, the Speciale is easy to spot thanks to 20” forged wheels available in black, dark grey or gold - that feature slender spokes and are 12kg lighter than the standard car’s. Also available is a blue and white centre stripe that is inspired by NART, the North America Racing Team. Inside, there’s plenty of Alcantara and carbon-fibre, but the most eye-catching new feature is the centre bridge or carbon-fibre wing that sprouts from the transmission tunnel and houses controls for the dual-clutch gearbox. Thinner glass, a Lexan rear engine cover and carbon-fibre doors mean it shaves a further 90kg from the standard 458’s interior. Although official prices have yet to be released, the Speciale is expected to cost in the region of £200,000 and will go on sale soon.

- The BIG Reveal ‘Jaguar
F-type Coupé’
aguar has given iN Mag a sneak peek of its F-TYPE Coupé just ahead of the car’s global debut at the Los Angeles motor show. The most hotly anticipated Jag since the legendary E-Type is set to be the manufacturer’s most ‘dynamically capable’ model and looks to be one of the prettiest, with a long nose and a pert tail. The Coupé will carry engines over from the convertible version that went on sale earlier this year. That means buyers can choose from two supercharged 3-litre V6s with 335bhp and 375bhp - or a 5-litre, supercharged V8 with 488bhp. Expect an even more powerful R model to follow soon, with closer to 600bhp.
can assure you will be a drama-filled reveal event in Los angeles for F-type Coupé is a very significant moment. We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to F-type Convertible, but for me the purity of creating a sports Coupé is a uniquely satisfying process - and I know that both visually and dynamically, F-type Coupé raises the bar yet again. The car will go on sale in spring 2014, with prices starting around the £60k mark. Full specifications will be released in February.
Like the drop-top, the Coupé features an all-aluminum construction, but its handling is set to be even better thanks to the roof, which both stiffens the chassis and lightens the car. Jaguar’s Director of Design Ian Callum said:
the excitement generated when we revealed the C-X16 concept was terrific [the Coupé’s show car] so to now be on the cusp of what I Page 42 The Christmas Issue

Horoscopes CHRISTMAS
‘Have a Hype Free christmas!’
SAGITTARIUS (22 NOV - 21 DEC) - This year has been a year full of inspiration for you, and as Xmas brings the end of 2013, new opportunities are on the horizon. Lucky Day: Boxing Day. CAPRICORN (22 DEC - 19 JAN) - 2013 has seen
pparently, the Ukrainians decorate their Christmas trees with artificial spiders and webs. Legend has it, a poor family who couldn’t afford any decorations, awoke one Christmas morning to find their tree covered with glistening webs. The rising sun had turned them into silver and they looked like tinsel. Now they think it’s lucky to find a real spider on Christmas morning. But then, they haven’t encountered the false widows hanging around Essex, have they? And in Sweden in 1966, a 13 metre tall goat figure made of straw was erected in the town square of Gavle. At the stroke of midnight, Christmas Eve, the goat went up in flames. The town never stopped building the goat figure, year after year and vandals never stopped trying to burn the goat down. And this still goes on today. Quite possible the only time you’ll be able to commit arson and get away with it! These festive customary traditions may seem a little odd, but that’s nothing compared to what we like to do in UK. From when time began, the people of this country have always felt the habitual need to enter into our Yule Tide in a blind panic. As John Lewis releases their Christmas ad, (like the gun shot at the start of a race) we all launch into unnecessary manic hysteria. It’s as if the lead up to Christmas signifies the end of the world. We stock up on masses of food and drink, just in case we run out and we buy double of everything. We worry that we may not be able to get milk on demand, (despite Londis, if not the garage, being open on a Christmas Day). We make statements to old friends like ‘We must see each other before Christmas’ as if by the end of December there’s a good chance we won’t see them again, or anyone for that matter. Social calendars are so full that most of us spend the month wandering about tired and in a hang-over haze.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some benefits for treating the Christmas build up like it’s your last four weeks on earth. By the 25 December, I'm usually so lethargic that I don’t feel guilty about lounging around in my PJ’s watching films and eating a whole cheeseboard, singularly. And I also love that I can use Christmas as an excuse to procrastinate on so many things ‘I know I need to work out what I’m doing with my life, but let’s get Christmas out the way first’ and ‘I would have got round to fixing the door, but then Christmas came and I thought it might be the end of the world… And well, you know how it is’.
VIRGO (23 AUG - 22 SEPT) - Relationships have been trouble. You have the opportunity to climb to success, so don’t waste it! Things are looking up! Put your feet up. Lucky Food: Stuffing.
There is no denying it, we all follow this tradition. That’s not to say we don’t enjoy the Christ-hyria the build up creates. It almost becomes a challenge and the reward. Here’s to a lazy guilt free Boxing day. Have a good one everybody, until next year!
