It was a hazy Tuesday morning when I caught up with the acclaimed singer/songwriter Ed Drewett at his amazing new pad. As I watched him juice: kale, avocado, grapefruit and mango whilst he chatted about his fitness regime, (Note: Bulging biceps through figure hugging shirt) I was beginning to feel slightly guilty about the breakfast bagel that I had scoffed on my morning journey. (Note : Buy a juicer and start dieting.) Ed made me feel at home in his busy schedule. He was due to perform at V Festival, attend the premiere and after party of the new One Direction movie, then fly off to New York to attend another premiere and work on some new material in The Big City. As well as recording and writing with a his new producer in London. It is fair to say Ed has seen phenomenal success with his song ‘Best Song Ever’ which was a number one hit for One Direction in over sixty countries, as well as penning hits for his friend Olly Murs and The Wanted and touring with Professor Green. He has also recently released his own tracks ‘Drunk Dial’ and ‘Undefeated’.

Sally: Ed, you have a catalogue of multi-platinum songs written for other artists, do you see yourself reaching the same levels of fame, you’ve got an amazing talent and a fantastic voice? Ed:

I’ve adopted a new approach as an artist to freshen things up a bit, I’ve spent the past few years trying to break through record labels and now that I am independent I kind of just want to switch it up and work with some different producers. Take it a bit out of my comfort zone, and see what I can come up with. My current material is classic pop, and radio aren’t playing me, so what I need to work on is making myself cool and current but still retaining my essence. Radio is really hard to break into; I have four years history with different record labels, first Virgin and then Polydor things were going wrong. Everyone in my team was in constant circulation or were being made redundant, so when you are trying to create an album and everyone in your team is changing, it becomes an impossible scenario to play out.

Page 10 The September/October Issue

Sally: You’ve previously auditioned for one of the big reality shows and you are now in the thick of the showbiz scene. What is your personal feeling of the impact of these shows on the music industry? Do you think that it gives wannabe pop stars a platform to showcase talent or is just a money making machine for a select few? Ed: Well, of course it’s a business, it’s a money making machine. I went for the X Factor three times and didn’t even get passed the first stage. I have two feelings about it. My first is: I did it and I know what it feels like to have a goal and a dream that you want to get too but the reality is only one-in-a-million people actually get into. My second is: It’s a good thing as when you have that dream, you will do anything to get there and if it means using the medium of prime-time TV then that is what you’ll do. It’s worked out very well for a lot of people - One Direction for a start. Having said that, it must hurt struggling musicians who for years do the gigs in the backstreet clubs and then see someone do a ten week show and get catapulted into the limelight. I have had some real lows after three and a half years with record labels - I know how soul destroying it can be. Sally: What or who inspires you? Ed: Sinatra was always like a big figure musically especially in terms of my performance. My real inspiration for writing songs came from growing up and listening to Rod Stewart and the Eagles who mum and dad listened to all the time. Along with some Country Music and Elton John. I didn’t realise this until a year ago, but they are all artists who have written really good songs. My melodies flow in a very similar way, particularly Rod Stewart. All of those old songs are totally ingrained within me and they’re kind of my guide. I supported Elton John a couple of years ago and am still in touch with him, he’s a great supporter of up and coming artists and is a really lovely guy. Sally: You grew up in and around Bishop’s Stortford and recently bought your first home here after moving back from London, you are clearly influenced by the area, is that why you chose to film the video in all of your old haunts for your song ‘Drunk Dial’? Ed: I’m a great believer in keeping things real. All my mates live in the area and everyone’s been really great and supportive of me and my music, so when I had the opportunity I jumped at the chance to show the real me in the places that I still go. We were drinking beer and rockin’ it out - I ended up being really pleased with the video. It takes a lot for me to be happy but when I saw the video I thought, yep, that’s cool.

The September/October Issue Page 11

Sally: The word is, especially within the journalistic music industry, that are a truly gifted singer/songwriter and musician, and big things are destined for you. Do you read what’s written about you? Ed:

I do. And I’ll tell you why. Until now everything has been focused on whether, or not, I’m getting to where I want to be. So reading stuff is important because it gives you a gage on where you’re at. I might read things I don’t like but there it is. But hey. I know that I can have a good career just writing, creating songs that people love and get played all around the world and that’s pretty cool.

Sally: If there was a fire in your house, what would be the one thing that you would save? Ed:

Ah, that’s an easy one. After ‘Glad You Came‘ went to number one for The Wanted, my mum and dad had a little silver ring made for me. It means a lot to me. It has a single diamond and is engraved ‘All Time Low’, my first number one and ‘Glad You Came’, my second.

Sally: Is it all rock and roll in your world, or does the real Ed Drewett like to snuggle on the sofa and watch ‘The Great British Bake Off’ like the rest of us? Ed:

(Laughs) I can be a bit self-absorbed, I don’t mean to be but from the minute I get up in the morning, I’ve got music in my head. It’s their all day and then when I get home late at night I just usually have something to eat and fall back into bed. But hey, I’m kinda half and half. When I party, I like to party hard and probably too often but equally, I love a cold winter’s night with a scary film and preferably a lady by my side (laughs loudly) err, if there’s one around!

Sally: And the most rock and roll thing you’ve ever done? Ed:

I absolutely couldn’t tell you (laughing) it’s really f****** naughty!

Sally: I bet it is! (My face going quite red!)

And there you have Ed Drewett. An extremely super talented and thoroughly all-round nice guy. And up until now an undefeated talent. Page 12 The September/October Issue

Vintage Tea Baby Shower

Page 14 The September/October Issue

awn and Jimmy Beales, Mum and Dad to Sydney celebrated the oncoming birth of their first grandchild with a vintage afternoon-tea party in the garden of their home in Loughton, Essex.

Over sixty friends showered Mum-to-be Sydney, with gifts which included a miniature roll top bath with gold feet, baby cakes and gifts from Tiffany. The eloquent china and tiered cake stands were supplied by Madhatters Tea Party who set the tables with an array of mis matched 1950‘s china and served champagne, sandwiches, an array of cakes and tea. Bunting hung from the marquee and baby themed cakes dressed the tables. Whilst the girls chatted the men headed for a round of golf and rejoined the party in the evening, to continue the celebrations. Sydney, who is a professional nail technician, stole the show in her figure hugging dress which showed off her neat bump. Mum, Dawn organised games which included guessing Sydney’s baby bump waist line! Since the baby shower Sydney gave birth to a beautiful baby boy naming him Jude Reuter weighing 8lb 6oz. Both Sydney, her partner Ben and the Beales family are absolutely in love with their bouncing bundle.

. . . i h S u r I’ll have FSushi ! with my Zoe Hopkins shares a coffee with Danielle Park-Dempsey, to discuss her sudden departure from ‘The Only Way is Essex’ and her new role as restaurant owner of Hors D’ Oeuvre, in South Woodford. Danni arranged to meet me at her house, on the eve of her moving in date, which does not surprise me at all. As if you have ever had the pleasure of meeting Danni, you will know Danni always wears a sunny disposition with a chuckle at most situations which she may deem as: slightly awkward, amusing or even slightly boring. I was made to feel at home as I was found a comfy seat amongst cardboard boxes, a throng of friends packing her belongings away and her Dad screwing plasmas to the walls. I have known Danni for a number of years and she quickly became known as our ‘Super Nanny’. From the age of seventeen Danni helped look after my three boys and as I look onto her now, I have to admire Danni’s will to succeed and the tenacity which has got her to where she stands today.

Zoe:

Danni, when you first came to work for me, your Mum said: ‘Zoe, please take talk to Danni. She has set her heights so high wanting to live the life of a superstar, it’s not real. She really needs to focus on a solid direction.’

Danni: (Chuckles) I know it’s surreal. I remember that stage in my life, I was reading Katie Price’s autobiography Being Jordan and I thought: ‘That’s the life!’ and I wasn’t going to stop until I got there. Zoe:

So, Nanny to reality TV. How did that happen?

Danni: I moved to Marbella and was living with Arg and Lydia. Arg flew back to England to be on the show and ITV came out to Marbella to interview a few of my friends, to ask whether we would be interested in appearing in TOWIE. I did say no for the first year. Zoe:

What were your reasons?

Danni: I was happy with my life and felt I didn’t need a new direction. Then my boyfriend and I split up being after together for six years. It was a really upsetting time. He went out to Los Angeles for a boys holiday and it triggered a reaction - pay back! So I emailed ITV and said yes.Zoe: After four months in the reality show, Page 16 The September/October Issue

Zoe:

After four months in the reality show, your departure was quite sudden.

Danni: I know. I really enjoyed it at the beginning. (Chuckles) On the first day filming the microphone kept slipping down my top. It was really awkward as they had to keep adjusting it the whole time. And being a ‘natural’, they move about quite a bit! (Chuckles again). It was fun at first. I just wasn’t prepared for the negativity and how nasty people can be. I always think the best of everyone as that is how I have been brought up.

I treat people as I would like to be treated. Twitter Trolls took it to the extreme and I simply wasn’t prepared. I became anxious and really down and then started questioning what I wanted to achieve from TOWIE.. Macdonalds; you hated processed food and the first thing they said when you came in was ‘We had McDonalds’. I thought you were going to kill me! When I moved in with my boyfriend Fabian, I was in a happy place, I started experimenting with foods. Then in time I confidently realised I was very good. I started hosting dinner parties with my Caribbean cuisine and everybody was raving about it. That’s when the vision of owning my own restaurant was born. I started saving really hard to enable me to turn my dream into reality. HDO moved away from Caribbean food as my vision was a mix between fine-dining and fast-food. You will find Hors D’oeuvre sits nicely in between and is for all taste palettes.

Every day I would get a racial criticism. I really thought as a nation we were over all that! It reminded me of how I felt when I was at school and it made me feel so low. I also received tweets about my looks or that I was fake. Have you heard of a ‘self- fulfilling prophecy’? Well, when you’re told something over and over again, you start believing it. That’s when I knew I was losing sight of who I really was and I needed to do something about it. Zoe:

And now you have launched Hors D’oeuvre, in South Woodford. You do know that is the hardest spelling or word to master, especially as we live in Essex! Zoe:

Danni: (Chuckles) I know, I have shortened it to HDO, as even I struggle. The name sums up exactly what the restaurant is about. I looked at what I want from a restaurant. A social space to network with friends, with delicious food thrown into the equation. HDO offers exactly that. It’s positioned conveniently opposite Funkymojoes if you want the night to go on! You can come with friends and enjoy a sharing platter, delicious finger foods, wraps, sushi... Our menu is actually incredible! Breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks thrown in in-between. HDO will be open from 10am until 10.30pm Monday to Sunday and will be offering takeaways for all the local businesses by day and an experience by night.

Think glowing sofas of all colours, low level lighting, ambient music, bathrooms to die for and a garden space like no other. All I can say for now is in the garden grass is everywhere other than on the floor. We are also so lucky to have the oldest Horse Chestnut tree which is screaming out for some lights. We haven’t forgotten you Mr Horse Chestnut, you are next on our list! Zoe:

Have you personally created the menu at HDO?

Danni: I have had an input, but it is mainly down to the highly acclaimed Jeff Kipp who also created Sushi Sambas menu. I also cannot thank enough my uncle Mark Dowding who is an amazing food scientist who travels the word and then comes home to create the most amazing dishes.

Uncle Mark has given HDO our signature dish Fru-shi. Think fruit and coconut rice. It is the coolest dish. A perfectly healthy, balanced choice for breakfast, lunch or to accompany dinner. We have just patented the recipe and we all are hugely proud of it. There is nothing like it, so make sure you sample it first! Zoe:

And the next five years?

Danni: South Kensington, The City... Hors D’oeuvre and Danni Park-Dempsey, is coming to get you!

(Laughs)I am trying to imagine you and food Danni! You were the worst cook when you nannied for me.

Danni: (Chuckles) I know, wasn’t I. I remember phoning my Mum when you asked me to make Spaghetti Bolognese for your boys and I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. It was so awful. Mum had to talk me through cooking it all over again and then Jasper refused to eat it. They made me take them to Photography: Gllespie/JG Pictures

iN Great Shape Dr. Ambika Chadha advises iN Mag Essex on what to look out for before facing the needle… It’s a question that passes the enhanced lips of literally hundreds of women (and increasing numbers of men) in pursuit of a more youthful and attractive face. As the affordability of injectables has increased, so has the number of practitioners offering injectables such as botulinum toxin and dermal fillers. But the real question that everyone should be asking is not where you can get your beauty shots done but who is giving them to you?

Botulinum toxin and dermal fillers are part of the growing industry of nonsurgical facial aesthetics that also includes chemical facial peels, laser skin resurfacing and teeth whitening. Despite involving medicines anyone who has been on a relevant training course can administer the anti-ageing treatments if a doctor prescribes them. Fortunately the body that regulates doctors, the general Medical council (gMc), issued guidance at the start of the year that obliges any doctor who now prescribes injectable cosmetics to meet with each patient personally beforehand to ensure they fully understand the patient’s medical history and reasons for wanting treatment. is has led to the collapse of many beautician and nurse-led aesthetic practices that relied on so-called ‘remote prescribing.’ Page 26 The September/October Issue

e government was so concerned about rogue practice in the aesthetic industry that in april this year it published a ‘Review of the Regulation of cosmetic interventions’. e Review created a media stir and strongly emphasized that only those who have medically recognized qualifications and training should carry out cosmetic procedures in a registered clinic with resuscitation equipment available in the event of an emergency. so with the ‘Botox® party’ most definitely not the safest way to get your wrinkles ironed what should you be looking for before letting anyone wield a needle to your face… ?

1. Qualificat ions:

If there is one thing you must check it is that your practioner is a doctor, dentist or nurse who holds a current and unblemished professional registration in this country and is comprehensively insured to give injectable cosmetic treatment. UK-based professional registrations can be verified on the internet. And don’t be afraid to ask where your practioner qualified and about their insurance status. As Hamilton Fraser, cosmetic insurers to healthcare professionals state, ‘We stress that patients ask the cosmetic practitioner if they are insured, and seek evidence of insurance, before they go ahead with any treatment.’

Be wary of the words ‘aesthetic’, ‘cosmetic’ and ‘specialist’, especially when used together. In this country, there is no formal or official training pathway leading to the title of ‘aesthetic specialist’. This means that anyone can call himself or herself an ‘aesthetic specialist / practioner’ without having to prove their reason for doing so. That said, there are some doctors, dentists and nurses who have undertaken further post-graduate training or who are members of specialist associations such as the British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM). It is worth enquiring about these as clearly a practicing facial surgeon who has done an aesthetic fellowship is more appropriately qualified than a general healthcare professional who does injectables in his / her spare time without continual professional development. And working on Harley Street isn’t a professional qualification but whilst qualifications are a benchmark, more qualified doesn’t necessarily mean better in an industry where experience and technique count for a lot. So do your homework and ask around.

3. Locat ion, Locat ion, Locat ion:

Aesthetic treatments must be carried out in a clean, safe and clinical environment to avoid infection and costly mistakes. Furthermore, the treatment room should have good lighting (ideally day light) and safe needle disposal facilities. Treatments most definitely should not be carried out in homes or beauty parlours where the environment is not sanitary and there are no facilities to deal with adverse reactions such as severe allergic response (anaphylaxis).

4. Subst ance:

We have all heard stories of patients reveling in their new look only to discover it wearing away far too quickly. And whilst there may be legitimate reasons for this (including habitual treatment or undertreatment) the use of poor quality or diluted aesthetic products is widespread. Botox® itself is just one form of botulinum toxin but it is not superior to other approved brands so beware the practioner who has a passionate brand allegiance or claims to use the ‘original botox®’. Wigmore Pharmacy, suppliers to the cosmetic industry advise, ‘You should know what is being injected into your skin before it happens and be reassured that any injectable product is brand new, sterile, in date and sourced from a reputable pharmacy.’

5. Good Pract ice:

There is a saying in medicine that goes, ‘A good surgeon knows when to operate but the best surgeon knows when not to operate.’ Similarly, an aesthetic practioner should inform you of when injectable treatments are unlikely to achieve the desired result and when a surgical alternative is more appropriate but not all have the knowledge or honesty to do so. Many patients part with their money only to be dissatisfied with the result because their expectations were not met or they were misinformed. The best aesthetic practioners will spend the time to listen carefully to a patient’s concerns, record their assessment of the face (ideally with a pre-treatment photo) and offer a range of treatment options at the end of the consultation process without any pressure. Most importantly, all risks and benefits of any treatment must be explained before you sign on the dotted line. This is known as ‘informed consent’ and is a legal obligation for doctors and dentists so if you don’t understand something or need time to think about things make sure you say so.

6. Aftercare:

Does your practioner care about the results? If they do they will offer you a post-treatment consultation at no extra cost where any issues can be addressed. Likewise, they should be contactable within working hours to answer queries. One of the recommendations of the Government Review was that patients and their GPs should be sent a written record of their treatment. Whilst many patients seeking aesthetic treatments request discretion all healthcare professionals are bound by confidentiality not to discuss treatment unless with other healthcare professionals potentially involved in their care. As often the case with many things in life, you get what you pay for and the aesthetic industry is no different. The stakes are even higher where your face and health are concerned so why take any risks?

Don’t be afraid to call around different practices and ask questions - and not just about the price. By following the outlined advice you’ll ensure that you’re in safe hands and walk away a rejuvenated, happier you. ‘Local lad’, yes that’s me. I live in Epping, work for a Loughton based company, Media 10 and play locally, namely: NuBar, Funkymojoes and Club One9Five. Last Christmas, whilst spitting out the last remaining Quality Street, I saw a photo of myself and decided it was finally time I lost some timber! I would like to point out that I wasn’t morbidly obese but I did have more than one chin and a fine set of moobs to match. Being slightly ashamed of how I looked and wanting somewhere to work-out incognito, I joined the local leisure center. I threw myself into a gym routine and my weight started to drop off. I am not a natural runner (I look like a combination of Phoebe from Friends and Forest Gump) but soon could hold my own on the treadmill. I upgraded my gym membership and joined Virgin Active in Chigwell and said goodbye to Blubber Boyle and hello to Buff(ish) Boyle. I believe in setting goals in life, be it an ideal weight, a promotion at work or in my case, my new goal ‘The London Marathon’. Having an aim to work towards gives you focus, determination and a great sense of achievement. And I know more than anyone that a goal can appear daunting, even scary. So I made a plan and broke it in half! I took on the Brentwood Marathon and Nike’s Run To The Beat. Now I feel ready to go the distance, all 26 miles of it! Do you have a goal in life? Have you asked yourself how you are going to achieve it? Imagine if your goal was simply to see-out your next birthday, play football in the park or dance at the school prom. Sadly, these are some of the goals set by the 150 children and their families treated and cared for by our local children’s hospice, Haven House. In the past ten years Haven House have provided over 350 children and their families the emotional, practical and financial support they need to come to terms with serious, rare or life-limiting conditions. This much needed support has been and always will be free to the families that need it but unfortunately it’s not free to provide. Every year it costs around £2 million to fully resource Haven House, of which 70% comes from local people like you and me. This is the start of my grueling training and nutrition plans, long runs over nights out and the biggest charity fundraiser since Elton launched ‘The White Party’. So, go on... Sponsor me and make a difference in someone’s life! Until next issue...

s a child I looked up to my Dad, Daniel Brown, who in 1974 launched Dans Luxury Travel with just one coach, a second hand transit which cost him £200. He worked as a bus conductor in Hackney and all Dad wanted to do was better himself, get out of Hackney and move away from the Kings Mead estate! At the tender age of twelve, I started cleaning his buses weekends and sat in the office on school holidays listening and watching everything, I was like a sponge absorbing every bit of information so I could learn the game. I passed my coach test when I was eighteen which made me the youngest person in England to drive a coach at the time. My claim to fame! Dans Luxury Travel has been part of my life since I can remember. My Dads vision, has become my own. 2013 has been a huge year for me; Dans Luxury Travel bought out Wests Coaches who offer a wide range of tours and excursions. Since 1949 Wests Coaches have been trading; this was a real game changer for Dans Luxury Travel. Wests Coaches are a huge name in central, north and east London, west Essex and Herts. This is also the year that Dad handed me the reins, it's now my role to follow in my Dad’s footsteps and drive both businesses into the next decade. We currently employ forty people and have forty coaches to maintain. I am just in the process of securing a new top of the range coach, which is exciting. Wests Coaches are currently one of the largest operators of school transport in this region. I start work at 7am every morning and finish at 5.30pm, six days a week. Running forty coaches 24-7, I need to put the hours in. We have seen strict rules and regulations brought in to govern our industry, because of this many companies are deciding not to continue. Wests Coaches was a blessing for us. Page 34 The September/October Issue

None of the West family wanted to carry on the family business which was great for us as we could snap them up! There is a huge market of travel companies approaching retirement and this is where I can see our expansion deriving from. I have to thank my Dad, he has taught me how to keep focused, his determination, drive and will to succeed. Dads favourite moto is:

'Never turn anything away, even if we are fully booked!'æ” “ And this is what we as a company strive for.

The next five years? This will be filled with expansion, expansion and more expansion. And then I want to take it to the next level. Dan Air - everyone has a dream and a goal, and that's mine!

with outings and nights away, fun and laughter and of course the theatre! Dukes St James, London is a quintessentially English Hotel tucked away in a cobbled court yard off St James’ and a member of the prestigious ‘Small Luxury Hotels Of The World’. Exceptionally child friendly and an absolute haven for children and parents alike it goes without saying this is one of my favourite family stays in London. The Duke St James very own Nigel Mendham features his delicious ‘Children's Chocolate Afternoon Tea Factory’ which is an experience which all children and grown-ups alike will not forget in a hurry. The experience is second-to-none.

Arriving, the Dukes St James opulent grandeur is breathtaking. Big flags hang from the pillars lining statement steps leading up to the grand entrance. As we were accompanied to our room, the concierge said to the children as he was about to leave:

There is something hidden in your room for each of you, it is golden and shiny. Come and find me once you have found them.’

Squeals of delight rang through the room as our boys jumped on the beds searching every nook and cranny. Three golden envelopes were found hiding under each pillow and inside a Golden Ticket. Buzzing with excitement they raced to the front desk waving their Golden Tickets. They were presented with a copy of Roald Dahl’s ‘Charlie And The Chocolate Factory’ and their faces lit-up but then looked puzzled as the concierge said: ‘There’s more!’. We were escorted into the most elegant of rooms to a special chocolatethemed Afternoon Tea Party for the whole family. Pink tiered castle platters graced the crisp white linen covered tables and laid upon each platter was a selection of the most delicate chocolate treats. Chocolate milk, chocolate mousse with crackle pop, chocolate sorbet, brownies, chocolate muffins and milk chocolate eggs. As each treat was devoured Nigel Mendham himself came out and whispered into our boy’s ears:

There is more!

As the excitement became too much to contain (and the sugar took hold) a black London Taxi arrived to whisk us away. Where were we going? We arrived at the Royal Drury Lane theatre and more squeals of delight as huge billboards of Willy Wonka greeted us. We were just in time for the evening performance of the highly acclaimed new musical ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’. That evening, we found ourselves snuggled up in the Dukes St James’s big white fluffy pillows reading bed-time stories as glasses of warm milk were delivered on a gold platter from room service. It is not often a hotel can get it so right; effortlessly the Dukes St James London waves it’s wand and creates magical moments to remember for many years.

Nightly rates in a Dukes room at Dukes st James London start from £270 inclusive of vaT. For more information please call 020 7491 4840 or visit www.dukeshotel.com The September/October Issue Page 37

i3 looks surprisingly similar to the concept car that was launched at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Its styling hints at the clever construction that lurks underneath the body and the only obvious casualty of mass production is the loss of the full-length glass doors. The interior also moves the game on from the conventional competition, entry is made easy thanks to no B-pillar and suicide rear doors, while the back of the BMW has a floating roofline. Once inside, the electric-car packaging, which allows for a flat floor, should mean there is more space than a normal car of the same size. The interior has a premium look with all the materials you would expect to find on any other BMW, plus a pair of digital displays that perhaps you wouldn’t. There are also high-tech features such as intelligent navigation that considers things such as hill gradients to ensure you don’t run out of charge. With a nod to the future of car construction, the i3 features a mixture of aluminium and carbon fibre for the chassis and body panels that aim to offset the weight of the car’s 230kg lithium-ion batteries. The suspension is aluminium, too, while the drive shafts are hollow and even the windscreen wipers are constructed from honeycombe rather than solid metal. This attention to detail means the BMW weighs around the same as a Polo-sized conventional hatchback. The car will be available with powertrain options - either a pure electric model or one that also sports a range-extending petrol engine. The latter will deal with the standard car’s biggest downfall - lack of range - thanks to 34bhp, 650cc two-cylinder motorbike engine that keeps the car batteries topped up and, with a full tank of fuel, can extend the BMW’s range by up to 186 miles. Mated to the 168bhp electric engine, the long-range i3 can manage 0-60mph in 7.9 secs. While losing the petrol engine reduces range, it also increases performance with the all-electric car capable of 0-60mph times that is reduced to 7.2secs, while journeys of up to 100 miles should be possible on one charge. Both cars can crack 93mph at full chat. The i3 features an intelligent re-generation system that allows the car to coast, when you lift the accelerator at high speed, while at low speeds the electric motor slows down the car to recharge the batteries. Charging takes eight to ten hours from a standard 240V socket or shell out £315 to have a BMW’s iWallbox fitted, assuming you have a suitable place to put it, and you could have 80% battery power in just three-hours charge time. The i3 has been built to be driven in cities, with a tight 9.86-metre turning circle and quick steering, while sophisticated multi-link rear suspension should make a decent job of ironing out the bumps. Like most BMW’s, the i3 is rearwheel drive for improved front-end grip and maybe even the opportunity to oversteer. More important is the car’s height that will give good visibility in town. Page 42 The September/October Issue

Tax breaks are another feather in the cap for a car like this and the i3 is no different. It’s exempt from road tax and the London Congestion Charge, while businesses with employees running one can claim 100 per cent of its value against their tax bill. It also comes with a three-year unlimitedmileage warranty and BMW covers the battery for eight years and 100,000 miles. Priced at £25,680 and due to reach UK shores in November, the i3 looks like one of the most convincing electric cars launched to date especially if BMW’s research, which found that the average commute is 25 miles, applies to you. The range-extender model will suit people who rack up more miles. Even if you don’t want to save the planet, the i3’s mix of ultra-modern looks, spacious cabin and low running costs look set to make it a winner.

ONE OF THE UK’S MOST AFFORDABLE HOT HATCHES THE SUZUKI SWIFT SPORT - IS NOW AVAILABLE AS A FIVE DOOR. he Sport has always been one of the cheapest ways to have fun thanks to its tight handling, light weight, a revy 1.6-litre engine and an entry level price of just £13,749, rising to £14,249 for the five-door model. Unlike its latest rivals, the Suzuki doesn’t rely on a turbocharger for its power, which means there is no lag to contend with, instead the it has a linear power delivery and razor-sharp response, but you will have to work it hard to get the best from it. Power peaks at 134bhp at 6900rpm, while max torque is 118lb ft at 4400rpm. They combine to give a top speed of 121mph and a 0-62mph time of 8.7secs.

The handling has a similarly old-school approach - there are no trick dampers or selectable steering settings here - but the chassis is taught, without being uncomfortable, and the direct steering gives the car an eagerness to corner. Equipment levels are high, too, with automatic air conditioning, bright HID projector headlights, Bluetooth, keyless entry and go, 17in alloy wheels and metallic paint - all standard. The five-door option, meanwhile, adds an extra seat to make the Sport a five-seater and comes with rear electric windows.

The little car should be relatively cheap to run with 44.1mpg possible, while CO2 emissions are rated at 147g/km, equating to an annual road-tax bill of £140.

On sale now, the Suzuki Swift Sport may take a basic approach to performance, but its no less fun for it and remains one of the best ways to move quickly, on a budget.

amp Bestival in Dorset, I have to say, is by far the best festival experience I’ve ever had, upholding it’s name ‘Bestival’ (Clever!). Rated Best Fest by me for a number of reasons, firstly I love the fact that it is unpretentious with limited musical know-italls, A.K.A. people who look at you as if you’ve just spelt your name wrong when admitting you don’t know who ‘The Steel Turnips’ are and don’t wish to. Why do music snobs do that? The most I do to broaden my musical horizon is download the free song of the week off iTunes. The fact is, I’m bound to most of the musical choices I made when I was a young and impressionable ‘teen-sponge’. That’s just how it is. So other than being able to dance jovially to some 80’s and 90’s grooves and not be mocked, I also loved Camp Bestival this year for its no hassle camping. As I arrived my tent was already assembled, yep, you heard me. All set up and ready to go. No lugging my camping gear, no struggling to put up a tent in the dark, no doing 150 MPH down the M3 for fear that if I got there too late I would end up with a spot behind the toilets. It was so worth the extra 60 quid, honestly www.tangerinefields.co.uk get involved and come highly recommended. And as a bonus came with decent loos, showers and a pamper parlor, with hair dryers and straighteners! Now, I know what you’re thinking. If you are picturing me in full make-up, diamonte UGG Boots, bopping about in the Bacardi tent, well stop! That is not an accurate portrayal. I was still camping, still sleeping in a tent, still using an outside loo but in much more civilized surroundings. I still got to funk my muddy groove in the main festival, it just meant that at bedtime I was going back to a well erected (stop it) tent and when it was time to go home I didn’t have all the stress of trying to fit my clumsy disordered tent into a sleeve that looks barely big enough to case a banana let alone a two manner! Bestival more like Comfestable! So this October, Summer 2014 tickets are going on sale. See you there! Page 50 The September/October Issue
