BY ROAD Cumbria and the Lake District is traversed by the M6 and therefore is within easy reach of the whole of the country. Travel time by coach from London is only around five hours and from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester and Newcastle around two hours. BY RAIL As with the road network, Cumbria and the Lake District is on the main London to Glasgow route and is also served by trains around its west coast. Journey time from London to Kendal is around three hours. BY AIR The main airports serving Cumbria and the Lake District are Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool and Blackpool which is the nearest. Further access by road or rail is excellent. BY SEA From continental Europe, the nearest ferry links are at Newcastle and Hull. From Northern Ireland, there are ferry ports at Stranraer and Liverpool and links to the Isle of Man from Liverpool and Heysham (Lancaster).

Carlisle Castle
What a winning combination. Take one border city which also happens to be the capital of Cumbria and marry it with the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall - unbeatable. Carlisle provides multiple visitor experiences including awardwinning Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery which, amongst other displays, can provide the perfect introduction to the archaeology of Hadrian’s Wall. For art minded groups, Tullie House offers plenty of choice including a Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood collection. Easily accessed from Tullie House is Carlisle Castle, one of English Heritage’s prime sites. The castle has fascinating links with English kings and queens, border reivers and even a Parliament. The warm red sandstone of the Cathedral is matched by the warm welcome given to groups from Cathedral volunteers and staff. Over 900 years old this lovely church has a splendidly decorated vaulted ceiling, Cromwellian links and a silver collection which can be admired on a visit to the Cathedral Treasury. The Undercroft restaurant offers delicious refreshments and accepts group bookings. Carlisle’s compact city centre, level walking and easily accessible indoor

award-winning The Lanes Shopping Centre and its Victorian market hall, makes for the perfect full day visit. East and west of Carlisle lies the world of the Romans. Go west and the Roman theme is combined with the beautiful coastal scenery of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Go east and the classic views of Hadrian’s Wall territory is quickly reached. It is possible to approach Birdoswald Roman Fort and Visitor Centre via the longest continuous stretch of Hadrian’s Wall still visible today where all of the components of the Roman frontier system can be seen.

But this area offers more than just Roman history. Border reivers rampaged through this area for centuries and medieval Lanercost Priory suffered several attacks during the turbulent border warfare between England and Scotland. But a visit to this beautiful and peaceful location today brings peace and tranquillity to any visitor. Refreshments of a different kind can be enjoyed in the adjacent, privately owned, Lanercost Tearooms. The pretty market town of Brampton would be of interest to any group keen on Pre-Raphaelite art because of the Edward Burne-Jones designed stained glass windows in the parish church of St Martin’s.

The Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole is a good starting point. Fascinating displays explore the world of the Lake District National Park and delightful gardens extend to the water’s edge of England’s longest lake. The idea of national parks is something the English poet William Wordsworth seemed to anticipate when he described the Lake District in 1810 “...a sort of national property in which everyman has a right…” So it makes sense to complete the short journey through Ambleside into the heart of the valley where the poet drew much of his inspiration. Between Rydal and Grasmere the connections with Wordsworth and other Lake Poets are everywhere. The ever-popular Dove Cottage and Wordsworth Museum explore Wordsworth’s life and works whilst the beautiful garden at his final home of Rydal Mount is still as he himself designed it. In the centre of Grasmere village is St Oswald’s church and graveyard where the Wordsworth family graves can be visited. And whilst there, don’t forget to visit the world famous Grasmere Gingerbread shop to enjoy the unique taste of this Lake District favourite. Ambleside with its multiple retail facilities and visitor attractions include Hayes Garden World, a group visit and refreshment stop. The Armitt Collection in the town centre is a winning combination of museum, gallery and library with Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin connections. For Peter Rabbit and Squirrel Nutkin fans the World of Beatrix Potter at Bowness on Windermere is delightful. The village provides an opportunity to join a boat cruise of Windermere and groups can truly take in the beautiful surroundings as the boat makes its way gently to Waterhead at Ambleside or to Lakeside at Newby Bridge. Windermere, Kendal & the South Lakes A must for culture and heritage fans Blackwell, the Arts and Crafts House lying between Bowness on Windermere and Kendal, is worth a visiting as a prime example of delicious period architecture. Delight in the detail of its period rooms where every door handle, every stained glass window and every window catch plays its part in creating harmony and style. Everyone loves a real castle. Especially one which comes with a beautiful and unusual garden - everyone will love Sizergh Castle and Garden, the National Trust property lying south of Kendal. Beautiful Elizabethan wood panelling and a quirky Limestone rock garden but, best of all, an historic house with a modern life to it as well. Compare and contrast the garden at Sizergh with the fascinating topiary shapes in the 300 year old garden of Levens Hall. Another family home with a long and fascinating history, the Bagot family extend the warmest of welcomes to groups. The lively market town of Kendal acts as a gateway to the South Lakes. Major attractions include K Village, the Lakes Outlet and the number one discount shopping outlet in the Lake District. Abbot Hall Art Gallery has a pretty setting close to the River Kent and its exhibits include elegant Gillows of Lancaster furniture. The site also includes the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry which celebrates the everyday life of Victorian residents and craftsmen who contributed so much to the richness of Lake District life. And still in Kendal, more beautiful craftsmanship can be enjoyed at The Quaker Tapestry Exhibition, the result of a community project with a difference. Hawkshead is for anyone interested in enjoying the best of traditional Lakeland village architecture. Narrow, winding lanes open unexpectedly into hidden corners where cosy, traditional tearooms offer scrumptious local produce and if that weren’t enough, the village has its own connections with both Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth. And not far away is the prime attraction of Hilltop, the Lakeland home of Beatrix Potter. A must-see for any group visit to this part of Cumbria.

One of the hidden gems of Cumbria. But hurry - the Eden Valley is fast making its mark with visiting groups and who can blame them - with all the historic market towns to experience and enjoy! You will find plenty to inspire interesting group itineraries. Located within the ancient Parish Church of St Lawrence in Appleby are the splendid tombs of Lady Anne Clifford and her mother. Discover her story and many local links, including nearby Brougham Castle and the almshouses known as the Hospital of St Anne (viewing by private arrangement only). Orton Village is the location of Kennedy’s Fine Chocolates, a coffee stop with a difference (by arrangement). Enjoy local foodstuffs and observe the chocolate making process. You won’t be able to resist buying in the shop! Kirkby Stephen Parish Church has Saxon origins and Danish/Viking links with the famous Loki stone on display and remains of many ancient stone crosses. Eden in the Lake District The lead mining heritage of the area can be enjoyed at the nearby Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre and the town is also the start point of the South Tynedale narrow gauge railway. The busy main market town of Penrith has indoor and outdoor markets and a wider shopping experience to offer and also another castle site to explore. Nearby, The Rheged Centre is a great stop off point for local food and arts and crafts, with an optional 3D film experience available. Or combine a boat ride on Ullswater between Glenridding and Pooley Bridge, with a visit to historic and elegant Dalemain House and Gardens. Both provide a warm welcome for groups. Watch out for special events at Dalemain to add even more interest to any day out. Aira Force is one of the most famous

home of a local Lord may go down a treat, especially if it is Hutton-in-the-Forest, the home of Lord and Lady Inglewood. Originally a medieval defensive house and much altered over its history, you will discover its varied range of architectural and decorative styles, which makes this fascinating location so enjoyable. The beautiful gardens provide the perfect setting for this romantic gem.

On the shores of Derwentwater the market town of Keswick is surrounded by classic fell scenery including Borrowdale. Keswick has two market days, held on Thursday and Saturdays centred around the historic Moot Hall. An amazing range of smaller independent shops are located in the side streets and lanes just off the main market place. In addition, as a centre for outdoor activities, there are many specialist outdoor shops. Learn about Keswick’s mining history at Keswick mining museum and discover what it was like working here. The most popular outdoor activity in the North Lakes is fell walking, and guided group walking is available, such as the Keswick Rambles. For the more energetic, there is ghyll scrambling, climbing or abseiling, cycling (both on and off-road) and plenty of water based activities, like swimming, canoeing, kayaking, sailing dinghies, windsurfing and plenty of rowboats and self-drive motorboats! Or else, you can just sit and watch. How about a trip to the Cumberland Pencil Museum? See the world’s biggest coloured pencil, remember your school days and find out how pencils were made. Keswick & North Lakes Walk through beautiful Hope Park which leads down to Derwentwater, past the famous Theatre by the Lake. Derwentwater Lake Cruises offer an all round trip by launch to take in the spectacular scenery, or an optional ticket to hop on/off allowing you to explore the many beautiful areas of the shoreline. The Keswick Museum and Art Gallery in Fitz Park is described as one of the world's strangest museums because of its wide ranging exhibits and still retains its Victorian feel. East of the town is Castlerigg Stone Circle, a place full of mystery and one of Britain’s most famous and impressive monuments from prehistory. Enjoy the splendid views of the surrounding mountains. Derwentwater feeds Bassenthwaite Lake where its surrounds are a quiet oasis for wildlife including the famous ospreys, which can be observed from special viewing platforms, in the season, located in Dodd Wood on the North East side of Bassenthwaite. Bassenthwaite is also the location of Mirehouse, 17th century home of the Spedding family. The house is well known for its relaxed lived-in feel often commented on by visitors. Enjoy the interesting collections of furniture and portraits, manuscripts and letters by famous writers and poets. The house is surrounded by rare ancient wildflower meadows to the front and terraced lawns and gardens behind, with walks to the lake and through the meadows to the beautiful pre-Norman parish church of St Bega, considered the setting for the opening of Morte d’Arthur.

Rolling coastline and countryside, Christian and maritime heritage combine, from the southern end of Windermere, through Grange over Sands, Cartmel, Coniston, Ulverston, and Barrow to form the attraction of the Peninsulas - it will spoil you for choice! From Lakeside, at the south end of Windermere enjoy a Windermere Lake cruise or visit the Lakes Aquarium and discover the secrets of fresh water, seawater and other water environments. Alternatively, visit the 19th century Stott Park Bobbin Mill, a steam powered working wood mill. Then hop on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway and enjoy the experience of riding in lovingly restored engine and carriages. The nearby Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow has more than 30,000 exhibits lovingly displayed in a different and refreshing way, fascinating for enthusiasts. The beautiful village of Cartmel, home of the world famous “sticky toffee pudding� is a delight to visit. Enjoy the quaint cobbled market place and the village antique shops. The highlight is 12th century Cartmel Priory. Nearby Holker Hall, the home of Lord and Lady Cavendish is one of the most interesting houses in the Lake District. The many changes over the centuries and rebuilding in parts make it a mixture of styles. The interiors are a delight with a magnificent staircase and library. Lake District Peninsulas
Further along the Peninsula lies Ulverston, a friendly, charming, historic market town, with its colourful street market on Saturdays and Thursdays. Known as the birthplace of Stan Laurel, you will find all you wish to know at the Laurel and Hardy Museum. On the outskirts of Barrow are the impressive remains of 12th century Furness Abbey, once one of the richest in Britain. Audio tours are provided to help you understand its power and wealth and show the importance of the monastic orders to the local communities. Barrow-in-Furness, with its maritime heritage and regeneration of the town shows off its Victorian heritage. The Dock Museum shows how Barrow grew from a small village to become a huge iron and steel manufacturer and major shipbuilding area. Enjoy a wide range of shopping and an indoor market open four days a week. Over the hills and not far away is a real Lake District gem. Coniston village and its surrounding area is closely connected to the 19th century art critic and writer John Ruskin. Visit his former home of Brantwood with its wide range of exhibitions and beautiful landscaped grounds and find out what “Jumping Jenny� meant to this eminent Victorian. Combine Brantwood with a ride on the elegant Steam Yacht Gondola, a throwback to a bygone age now owned by the National Trust. And at the Ruskin Museum in Coniston village centre a newly opened extension tells the story of Donald Campbell and Bluebird.

Go west for some of Cumbria’s best views (Wastwater was voted Britain’s favourite view and is accessible by mini-coach only which makes the experience even more special), best beaches including Quality Coast Award winning beaches at Haverigg, Seascale, Silecroft and St Bees. And the best of true Cumbrian welcomes in historic towns such as Cockermouth, Whitehaven, and Maryport to name just a few. With a stunning backdrop of mountain scenery and landlocked beautiful lakes, this part of Cumbria has a fine sweeping coastline reaching from The Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the north to the Lake District Peninsulas in the south. Plenty of interest for those all-important views from the coach window. Silloth is the place to savour some of this beautiful coastal scenery. It provides character for modern day photographers and artists, as it did for nationally renowned artists including J M W Turner and L S Lowry. And because Silloth enjoys some of the mildest winter weather in Cumbria, it’s ideal for autumn and early spring tours. Spectacular views across the Solway Firth make Scotland look almost within touching distance. But the Western Lakes offer more than just beautiful views. This is Cumbria with a real difference. Spice up the tour with a visit to the Rum Story in historic Whitehaven and step into a fascinating exhibition housed in an original 18th century warehouse. Transfer to The Beacon visitor centre to discover the social, industrial and maritime heritage of this Georgian seaport. Find out who led a surprise attack on Whitehaven in 1778 and visit The Beacon’s latest addition, its new Pop culture gallery. The Haig Colliery Mining Museum near Whitehaven is an on-going restoration programme with machines, mining equipment and displays on the social history of this important industry. Workington’s proud industrial history and past prosperity can be seen in the 18th century architecture of Portland Square Conservation Area. At the Helena Thompson Museum, named after a local philanthropist, displays of local history, a costume gallery and Georgian and Victorian room settings can be enjoyed. Western Lakes
Inland from the coastal area, the historic and pretty market town of Cockermouth lies at the mouth of the beautiful Vale of Lorton. Its broad, elegant main street is lined with delightful shops, so indulge in a bit of retail therapy where interesting, small specialist shops such as The Castlegate Gallery and personal service makes shopping a real pleasure For cultural appeal, visit Wordsworth House where the National Trust brings to life the birthplace of one of the greatest names of English literature - William Wordsworth lived part of his childhood here and each of its rooms is a window into 18th century family life. Jennings Cockermouth Brewery uses pure Lakeland water from its own well to brew beers of perfection. Take a guided tour, learn about the fascinating world of modern brewing, then sample some! Roman heritage is well represented by the Senhouse Roman Museum, Maryport. With the largest collection of Roman military altars and inscriptions from any site in Britain, this lovely museum is housed in a former Victorian Naval Reserve Battery. The museum lies adjacent to the site of the Roman fort of Alauna, part of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site, and a climb to the top of the museum’s observation tower shows the extensive fort site. For those interested in maritime heritage presented in a modern environment by the harbour, try The Wave Centre, a multi-function attraction including a Heritage Visitor Centre, café and gift shop. Learn about the town’s shipbuilding heritage and links with the ill-fated Titanic. Maryport’s Maritime Museum highlights the town’s famous residents of the past including Henry Ismay, founder of the White Star Line and locally born Fletcher Christian of Mutiny on the Bounty fame. Maryport looks after its youth groups too with the Lakeland Coast Aquarium giving young visitors an opportunity to get up close to some strange looking but fascinating sea creatures.

Worth a visit is the World Owl Centre at Muncaster with its beautiful birds.

And the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, affectionately known as La’l Ratty, is another gem. Seven miles of heritage railway running through beautiful landscape with views of the wild fells beyond, providing a rail experience to savour.

Located in the old station buildings of the former mining town is the local Museum of Millom, providing an insight to town life and is history. The local writer and poet, Norman Nicholson, is also commemorated here.
