April We’ve all been busy in the In Oxford office this month, covering some great restaurants which you can see in the review section AND we welcome Helen to the team who wasted no time in getting stuck into a great curry at Jee Saheb. One of our longest serving customers adorns our front cover in City Sightseeing who celebrate a 10 year association with the magazine this year. If you have never seen Oxford from the top of one of these fabulous open top buses, make sure you do this month – it’s a wonderful, flexible experience which will open your eyes to a whole new Oxford! Back to the reviews, and there’s a wide range to choose from this month. Try The Manor, under new ownership, in Weston-on-the-Green, the venue for this year’s Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards, or why not visit The Beetle and Wedge or The Fleece in Witney which Zoe and Rob reviewed as part of their spotlight on Witney. We also review St Aldates Tavern and one of Oxfordshire’s best kept golfing secrets, Magnolia Park Golf & Country Club. Our French intern, Lucie Perrion, also tells all about her stay in Oxford. Have a great April Richard Rosser Editor, In Oxford Magazine

Are you looking for the best tour guide in Oxfordshire? Have you ever wanted to learn about this city and its famous University? Well now’s your chance, with Oxford’s City Sightseeing tour bus! This is the perfect choice for tourists looking to explore this beautiful city, to Oxonians, wishing to learn about the City that they live in. You will find all you need to know on this bus tour with a little added humour to boot! The adventure started at Oxford railway station, where we collected our tickets and then we were directed to the relevant stop. We were about to embark on City Sightseeing’s open-top bus tour, and rain or shine, you’re always in for a treat, with amazing views and exquisite architecture; what more could a person want? There are two types of buses, one with a live guide and one that has a taped commentary with a wide variety of languages. Including 19 stops such as Christ Church, Sheldonian Theatre and Queen’s College, this bus tour is really the best way to see “The City of Dreaming Spires” from taking a sneak peek into the colleges with their immaculate lawns and century’s old charm, to learning the history of the oldest pubs. By the way, did you know Harry Potter was filmed in Oxford? And have you wondered why there is an Alice in Wonderland shop located in St Aldates? Now I know that the original sweet shop found there was Lewis Carroll’s inspiration for the old sheep shop in Alice Through the Looking-Glass, it would be a travesty for it to move! You will discover this during your journey. I have to admit it’s quite interesting to know how the colleges and faculties work and realize that a lot of authors, prime ministers and world famous individuals have studied at Oxford. You can hop on and off the bus all day and for this reason I recommend you to take the 48hrs valid ticket so the first day you can see and listen all about the most important venues and then you can visit them. But, with this ticket you are offered a wide variety of discounts in both shops and restaurants. So in my opinion this really is an ideal day out, from taking a trip around the museums, to eating in Oxford’s best restaurants, with a discount!!. So what are you waiting for? 24 Hours in Witney Our lovely Customer Liaison Manager Zoe Kemp takes an in depth trip around the historic town of Witney and learns that great things come in small packages. As soon as I arrived in Witney I noticed the beauty of the town. The Church Green provides a picturesque heart to this historic town. With the recent development of Marriotts Walk and wide array of shops, Witney has become the shopping hotspot of the Cotswolds. Being a keen shopper, I couldn’t wait to spend 24 hours in Witney to discover if the town could become a new favourite shopping destination of mine. The Fleece kindly provided us with an evening meal and a room for the night which enabled me to experience Witney for 24 hours, (please refer to page X for a review of the Fleece). After our evening meal we took a short stroll down to Marritiots Walk and to the cinema. We passed a number of pubs on High Street, many of which were busy for a Monday evening and created a great sense of community as locals were deep in conversation. Pulling back the curtains in the morning to a frost covered Church Green was a scene I would like to wake up to every morning if I could. We went down for breakfast and WOW, The Fleece sure knows how to put on a good breakfast. Opting for a bacon and sausage roll, the fresh produce reinforced the quality of the food available at The Fleece, even a breakfast bap is of the highest quality! I began my shopping adventure on the High Street. I soon discovered Langdale Court, Wesley Walk and Waterloo Walk,
8
forming a maze of shops hidden behind the main High Street. Many of the local businesses greeted me with a hello, something which the high street chain stores lack. Janette at Cotswold Kids provided me with a warm welcome and shared her knowledge of the town and the local businesses with me. I later ventured back to the top of the High Street to discover Corn Street, offering more businesses to be explored including W.R Harvey and Co Antiques and the Wychwood Brewery situated just off of Corn Street. This small town certainly has a lot to offer. Nestled amongst the wide array of shops are a range of cafes, bas and restaurants. Situated to the top of the High Street, Lynn and the team at the Church Green Café provided me with a much needed seat and a light bite to eat before I headed home. With something for everyone, unique business, high street shops, ample parking and a multiscreen cinema, Witney welcomes you to explore and enjoy all this historic town has to offer. With free parking throughout Witney you really can enjoy the town without the restriction of parking fees. With Witney’s abundance of unique shops, it is a breath of fresh air to find a high street that is not dominated by the high street chains. To answer my earlier question. Would Witney become a new favourite shopping destination of mine?...Definitely, as I have already returned.

Witney Feature
In the heart of Witney, The Fleece caters for your dining and accommodation needs, with first class food and homely, spacious rooms. Be sure to stop by at The Fleece and order their Chocolate Brownie – DDDDDelicious! The comfortable surroundings and relaxed atmosphere are perfect for a cosy night out. The evening menu and specials board provides a variety of dishes to cater for all tastes. Fresh bread was brought to the table and we were spoilt for choice, deciding what to choose. The menu was great and it was clear that a lot of thought had been put into the food. As meals were delivered to the surrounding tables, it all looked so good that we were questioning whether we had made the right choice. We chose the potato and watercress soup for our starters, followed by free range sausage with creamy mash and onion gravy, before finishing the meal with a warm chocolate brownie and ice cream - we were certainly well fed! Breakfast was equally impressive with a range of continental items, fresh juices and cooked dishes to choose from. The waitress also advised they had fresh croissants available on request and the chef was happy to adjust the menu to suit specific preferences. The Fleece’s Green Room is just for private dining, meetings and events. The Fleece provides the room free of charge to help the local community. Seating up to 30, many locals are using The Fleece as their chosen destination for all occasions, even the local book club make the Green Room the venue for their Monday evening gatherings. Please contact the Fleece for further details and to confirm availability. The accommodation at The Fleece was spacious and soft furnishings such as the cushions and blanket on the bed made the room feel like a home from home. With tea and coffee making facilities we settled in for the night with a warm drink and watched TV as we sank into the mass of cushions. The view from our room overlooked the Church Green – it really is a beautiful and peaceful retreat. The staff were always on hand to assist especially when my partner managed to lock our key in the room! Well done Rob! Nothing was too much trouble. The Fleece ticks all the boxes with the idyllic setting of Witney, good quality food and service with a smile. Be sure to pop in next time you are in Witney. The Fleece won’t disappoint. 11 Church Green, Witney, OX28 4AZ Tel: 01993 892270 Web: www.fleecewitney.co.uk

Lucie Perrion visited us as an intern for six weeks in January from Ecole Atlantique in Nantes – here is a diary of her stay in Oxford I joined The In Oxford Group for six weeks from my business school in Nantes, France. This is the diary of my stay in Oxford. When I arrived at the train station I immediately fell in love with Oxford. One thing I noticed when I arrived ………there were lots of buses and bikes!!!! The In Oxford Group is located in Headington, next to Books Uni and the house I had arranged before coming to Oxford was just five minutes away by bike, which I borrowed from a colleague in the office – I felt like a real student in Oxford! Working for The In Oxford Group, I was able to visit some lovely places in Oxfordshire – Witney, Woodstock, Summertown, Jericho and more. I loved Blenheim – so beautiful with lovely shops. Blenheim Palace was ‘incroyable’. I also helped with B4’s first interview at the incredible new conference annexe of the Said Business School – a state of the art building recently opened by Prince Charles. I also visited TLA Fitness’s new studio in Sunningwell – a fabulous new centre for personal fitness, yoga and more. The studio is in a very quiet part of the countryside but not too far from Oxford City Centre. One of my favourite things about Oxford has been VOUCH – The In Oxford Group’s own voucher scheme. I had vouchers for The Red Lion, La Cucina, The Trout, 4500, Malikas and many more, but my favourite was 4500 – the Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards Asian restaurant of the year – it was wonderful. During my stay my parents came to visit and stayed at The Oxford Hotel. They loved it – it had a spa and a gym and was only a short distance from the heart of the city. They also enjoyed Browns and The Red Lion. In the evenings I enjoyed Oxford’s night life, visiting the O2 Academy twice – a very different experience for me, with a huge number of students in one place. I danced to some great English songs – and the English can certainly dance! I also spent one weekend in London – I was delighted that I could get there and back on the Oxford Tube for just £15! I liked London…..but I loved Oxford and was so glad I chose to stay in Oxford for my internship. Oxford was the perfect town for my first experience abroad. I hope I will come back soon.

Restaurant Review
Jee Saheb Firstly I have a confession to make. Despite having numerous friends that have previously told me to try this hidden gem in North Parade I have been guilty of sticking with what I knew. My visit to Jee Saheb was truly eye opening. Upon arrival we were greeted warmly by Wayas who showed us to our table. At this point I took in the very simple yet authentic décor and furnishings of the restaurant. Very tasteful. The menu was a very good mix of old classics and chef’s recommendations. My friend, my son and I had gone on empty tummies so whilst deciding what to have we nibbled on some poppadum’s and chutneys. The mango chutney and onion salad came out as firm favourites all made by the chef in house. Having scanned the choice of starters we opted for King Prawn Pathia Puri, a Mixed Starter and the Ajwani Salmon. All three starters not only looked amazing, they were mouth wateringly delicious. A special mention must go to the Ajwani Salmon which is succulent pieces of salmon, chargrilled in the tandoor with lemon juice, ginger and carom seeds. Beautifully done and the salmon flakes just melted in your mouth. My 9 year old son Mac (a food connoisseur already due to our love of eating out!) and my friend also pointed out how nice the onion Bhaji’s were. Light and fluffy and not at all greasy was their considered feedback. Always liking to try new dishes I decided that for the main course I was going to go with a recommendation from Wayas and opt for the Chicken Handi Lazeez which is chicken sautéed and simmered in its own juice with aromatic chillies, cardamom and saffron. Mac opted for the traditional Chicken Tikka Massala and my friend went for the King Prawn Dhansak. We had a mix of Onion Rice, Coconut Rice and Boiled rice and a peshwari and garlic nann to accompany. We even managed to squeeze in a sag aloo which was well worth the bloated tummy! All dishes were exceptional, the chicken was tender and the prawns succulent and the Tikka Masala sauce was one of the best I’ve ever dipped my nann in!! It went down even better with a nice chilled glass of the house Sauvignon Blanc. Mac obviously missed the wine and had a coke…. in a glass bottle! Another brownie point! Finally, we were going to avoid dessert as not only were we so full up we were fit to burst but Indian restaurants aren’t overly renowned for their desserts! Again, I was proved wrong for the second time in one evening. We shared a mixture of sorbets between the three of us and they were the most scrumptious I have ever tasted. The Mango one had fresh pieces of mango in and it simply melted on your tongue. And refreshingly it wasn’t too frozen, in fact it was the perfect temperature. Wow, what a revelation this restaurant experience was. From the amazing and attentive service from Wayas and his team to the culinary skills of his very talented chef and the lovely authentic look of the restaurant I can hand on heart state that I will certainly be returning and recommending this to everyone I know that enjoys this type of food. Thank you Wayas and the Jee Saheb team for making this such a pleasurable review to write. I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. Restaurant Review
Undergoing a major refurbishment, The Manor at Weston-on-the-Green is enjoying not only a facelift but a complete rejuvenation. Under the expert stewardship of General Manager Christian Kaberg and his more than able team, the new owners are creating a gem just five miles from Oxford. Tina was to meet me later at the hotel so I took the opportunity after the meeting to check in and relax in our beautifully appointed room. It was a real home from home room, with everything you might need, most importantly an amazingly comfortable bed which became too hard to resist after a long week – an hour later I was awoken by a knock at the door after falling into a deep slumber. Tina was ready so I quickly changed and we made our way to the bar for a pre dinner drink. A first! We were actually early for a review and it gave us time to enjoy the property and take our time with a much anticipated drink, my first of 2013! We took to our high chair seats at the bar of Bertie’s, a stunning hotel bar with a spectacular drinks display, rich green walls and dark wooden furniture, adorned by hunting art and fabulous equine sculptures. This was a bar, a real bar and Vito, the attentive Italian bar tender, was on hand with my medicine and an astonishing mind of information about our drinks, his homeland and life generally. It was a wonderful way to start the evening. Francisco, our attentive maître d’, showed us the menus so we could prolong our stay in our new favourite bar, so we deliberated over the mouth-watering choices for a good fifteen minutes before making our way to The Baron’s Hall, accompanied by the hotel’s resident dog, Holly, a beautiful golden retriever who never left our side in the communal spaces of the hotel but who knew the restaurant was a no go zone. Dating back to the 11th century, the Baron’s Hall has been carefully restored to show its linen fold oak-panelling to ensure an unsurpassed dining experience. Above the Baron’s Hall is the original Minstrel’s Gallery where private dining parties up to sixteen take place. The five course tasting menu changes daily, and Tina went for this whilst I chose from the full à la carte menu, accompanied by a glass or two of chilled Macon Villages, whilst Tina plumped for a glass of champagne. Our scallops, pigeon, honey roast duck and beef, plus a few more courses for Tina, not to mention the rhubarb and custard we shared for desert were all presented immaculately and the tastes were spectacular. We couldn’t find fault in any way and our waiter was attentive throughout, offering an excellent knowledge of the food we were enjoying. The Manor provided us with a real ten out of ten experience. Great food, excellent service and a wonderful room. If this is part way through the refurbishment, well, we’ll just have to check out the finished article, won’t we! Restaurant Review The Beetle & Wedge Boathouse It was a cold, wet and windy Thursday evening when we set off from Oxford for The Beetle and Wedge in the former Boathouse at Moulsford near Wallingford. It took us just 25 minutes and we were then shown to our corner table in the delightful conservatory extension that had been built only 10 years ago. This was almost the same time that Stephanie and Warren Musk took over the running of this beautifully situated establishment on the banks of the River Thames. They have more recently been awarded the ‘Four star Restaurant with Rooms Rating’ under the British Common Standard for Guest Accommodation, and earlier they were listed in The Times ‘ 50 Best places to eat Al Fresco’. As soon as we had taken our seats, olives, granary bread and butter were put on our table and the gin and tonics followed very quickly afterwards. Sue ordered the crispy duck, ginger risotto cake with plum sauce to start and I went for the Madagascan crevettes with lime and coriander mayonnaise. Sue commented on the delicious coating of the cake and I was extremely pleased with the large prawns which were fresh and tasty. To accompany the starters we had the Tanguero Rose 2011, from Argentina which was a deep pink and full of fresh summer fruits. After just about the right time our main courses arrived, the service was impeccable by the way, and Sue was presented with a Mediterranean Sea Bream with steamed Pak Choy, Crab Cake and Beurre Blanc. To accompany this Sue had a glass of the Sauvignon Chateau Haut Grelon 2011, which borders the Gironde Estuary. I am always keen on game at this time of year and I wasn’t to be disappointed with this locally shot pheasant, which came with mushrooms and a red wine and blackberry jus. We both had some ‘rosti’ potatoes, a speciality of the restaurant as they come served in the pan, French beans and a tomato and shallot salad. With the pheasant I had a glass of Ladera Verde Merlot 2011 from Chile, which was seriously good value. To finish we both had room for a vanilla crème brulee,’just’! The evening was an absolute pleasure and heaven only knows what it would be like on a balmy summers evening, dining ‘al fresco’!
