August In Oxford Welcome to August in Oxford
The year is flying by and on the back of a glorious June and July, let’s keep our fingers crossed for a sunny August. Our cover and lead article this month are brought to us courtesy of Branca, one of Oxford’s favourite restaurants in Walton Street. A mainstay of Oxford for what seems like forever, make sure you book your table for a relaxed lunch or dinner this month. August sees some fantastic reviews in the magazine. Enjoy a great meal and a great atmosphere at Wagamama in Market Street, or why not go for a punt followed by a leisurely lunch on the banks of the River Cherwell at The Cherwell Boathouse – there isn’t a more perfect place to be in Oxford on a beautiful summer’s day. If you like Asian food, the fabulous Saffron in Summertown was reviewed by Patrick Burrows of St Edward’s School this month and Patrick found Saffron to be everything he had hoped for and more. Why not try and win cinema tickets to Cineworld in Witney – enter by just being a friend of In Oxford Magazine on Facebook and also get the opportunity to win a complimentary £50 voucher to Shanghai 30’s in St Aldates, surely Oxford’s finest Chinese restaurant. Have a great August! Richard Rosser Editor, In Oxford Magazine

Restaurant Review Branca enjoys a fine reputation in Oxford for offering excellent Italian food in a contemporary trattoria setting. A reputation that is well deserved. Upon entering the high ceilinged reception area, you immediately have the sense that you are somewhere a little special. Behind the unassuming glass exterior, lies a blend of modern and rustic decor, with a lively and bustling atmosphere. An authentic trattoria for sure. Having entered the chic foyer/bar area, we were escorted to our table in the middle of the restaurant. The dimmed lighting and relaxed dining experience lent a intimate air to the eatery, despite the increasingly number of dinners on a frosty Wednesday evening. After taking our coats, the server promptly took initial drinks orders and listed the evenings specials from memory; no mean feat considering the apparent complexity of the starter and main courses. Along with the daily specials, the menu offers a comprehensive array of authentic Italian dishes; we eventually did manage to narrow down our the choices to our desired dishes. A notable inclusion to the wine list is the option to have many of the wines served in charmingly named ‘pots’, of roughly half a bottle. An excellent addition when dining during the week. When our starters arrived they were served with delightful little touches; my platter of San Daniele ham, pistachio mortadella, and fennel salami was served on a wooden wedge, and my companion’s Herb crumbed goats cheese with mixed leaves and roast vegetables came in a simple white bowl. Our starters finished and 'pot' of Chianti Classico well underway, we eagerly anticipated the main courses of Salmon with squash and spinich (a special) and a Vegetarian goats cheese pizza. Both were full of flavour and undoubtedly excellent examples of Italian cooking. To accompany the mains we ordered New potatoes and Green beans to share, which was easily enough for two and wonderfully seasoned to complement the main dishes. With our appetites and taste buds thoroughly satisfied we debated the succinct, but perfectly formed, dessert menu. There are a variety of equally tempting options, but we eventually decided on 'sharing' a Lemon tart and three, rather large, scoops of assorted fruit sorbet. The Lemon tart was easily one of the best examples I have tasted, expertly balancing the sweet and sour flavors. The sorbets were also fine examples of the dessert, exerting delicate and real fruit flavours. All in all, Branca is a welcome retreat into the joys of trattoria style eating. Inside: Wagamama Saffron Cherwell Boathouse
Restaurant Review
Tucked away in the centre of Oxford near the famous Covered Market in Market Street, Wagamama successfully and convincingly transports you into a modern Japanese Raman bar. Customers sit in the traditional style, opposite each other on long tables, which creates a friendly atmosphere and stimulates relaxed conversation, but perhaps most importantly, this layout encourages you to ogle the stream of steaming food leaving the kitchen before ordering for yourself! Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff and swiftly seated at one of the long Raman style tables. As soon as we walked through the door we had slipped effortlessly into the Japanese way. Diners not used to pan-Asian food are guided through the extensive list of unfamiliar dishes by the menu's friendly glossary. For those still unsure, the knowledgeable and enthusiastic waiting staff were excellent at recommending dishes. We ordered Duck Gyoza (duck dumplings) and Ebi Gyoza (prawn and vegetable dumplings) as a side dish. Both were fantastic, but the duck gets a special mention as we were tempted to order another portion! Our mains were the Seafood Ramen (noodles in vegetable soup with dory, prawns, squid and seasonal greens), and our waitresses' recommendation of Amai Udon (noodles in a tamarind sauce with prawns, egg and tofu, garnished with peanuts and lime). As our order numbers were written down on our placemats the waitress explained that, owing to fresh ingredients being used, our food would be cooked to order and could arrive at different times, expertly managing expectations. Amazingly, even after the mains, we still found room for temptation...our deserts. Coconut Reika (coconut icecream with fresh mango sauce) and Mango with Lime Zest and Lychee Sorbet came as a satisfying end to a fantastic meal. The two of us were more than well fed and watered, not bad value considering the food was fresh, the service immaculate and the atmosphere vibrant. Wagamama combines fresh and nutritious food in a clean, elegant yet simple setting with helpful, friendly service and value for money. This 'willful and naughty child' (the literal translation of Wagamama) stole our hearts, and we will undoubtedly be returning for more mischief in the future! Reviewed by Hannah L. Restaurant Review
A muggy Wednesday evening didn’t seem the perfect time for a curry, however, Saffron restaurant, located on Banbury Road in Summertown, just a mile from the City Centre, was busy as ever. As a pupil at nearby St Edwards School, I have always wanted to experience Saffron for myself, and, at long last, I had my chance. We were invited in with enthusiastic smiles, as chirpy waiters jovially chatted creating a vibrant atmosphere. They couldn’t have made us feel any more welcome. We chose to sit inside, although on a pleasant evening, ample seating is available outside. We were shown to a light, airy room with modern décor. The walls were splashed with a light yellow which complemented the wooden floor and the bright white table cloths, to create an effective and calming scene. To begin our Saffron experience, we were served with an ample amount of Papadums, with an equally vast array of chutneys and pickles; each with a unique distinguishing taste. For starters, my companion ordered a Chicken Tikka Purée, a classic dish of high quality. The flavours of the Purée dazzled the palate into a trance of sweet and sour flavours. My Keema Piaz was equally excellent. The fresh, best quality ingredients made a noticeable difference. Onwards to our mains! Not feeling so adventurous, I ordered the infamous Murgh Passanda, which was said to have a ‘delicate, mild creamy sauce with almond powder and red wine’. What a cocktail of flavours! My companion ordered the Duck Jalsha, a Saffron Speciality, with a delicious, succulent texture combining perfectly with the hot aromatic fusion of chillies, yoghurt, garlic and ginger. Both dishes were generous, delicious and carefully prepared. Saffron has an exciting ambience; the comfortable rooms are redolent of the kitchen’s hard work. The food was first class, reflecting Saffron’s significant efforts to minimise artificial colours and additives in their dishes. The wine list is also extensive, suiting all budgets. The restaurant’s impressive gourmet has been recognised with a number of awards including the Top 30 Best in Britain (BIBA) and a Gold Award from Quality Food Online Ltd, all of which, in my opinion, are fully deserved. The restaurant frequently hosts charity events, supporting charities such as Child Reach International and Helen and Douglas House. Over 12 years Saffron has become an exquisite restaurant, and our evening was excellent, with impeccable service and curry that has never tasted so good. Restaurant Review The Cherwell Boathouse If you're looking for somewhere that is a little bit different and slightly off the beaten track then why not head down to the Cherwell Boathouse. This hidden gem is set behind the infamous Dragon School in North Oxford, overlooking the tranquil setting of the River Cherwell. The Boathouse is a charming restaurant with a quintessential English feel and a clientele and ambience befitting a university town. Its rustic charm and informal surroundings, mixed with a modern, diverse menu, make this restaurant shine out as the perfect choice for all age groups. A small bar area for pre-dinner drinks boasts good local ales including the famous Hook Norton ale, and there's an extensive wine list suitable for both novices and experts alike. The wines, which come from all over the world, are of a high quality. We chose a reasonably priced Rioja, which suggested that some of the more expensive wines from the cellar must have been extremely good (some priced at more then ÂŁ250). Those with the most discerning and expensive palate would not be disappointed. The menu, whilst not providing an exhaustive choice, is very obviously aimed at accommodating seasonal produce, with a balanced choice across all food types, including fish, red meat and some interesting game dishes. A range of modern British and French cuisine is served in an interesting way with intriguing twists to the fusion of ingredients. The vegetarian options were well thought out and unique - not at all the usual boring afterthought of most restaurants. The presentation of the dishes was executed to a very high standard. The meal was one of the best I have had in a long time, complemented by the attentive staff, who are welcoming and have a relaxed yet informed approach. With a set menu option as well as a la carte, the Boathouse is mindful of a range of financial budgets, and there is certainly something for all tastes. Dessert is our favourite part of any meal, and the Boathouse did not disappoint us. With a wide selection of delicious creations it was hard to choose just one - we had four different puddings including chocolate soup, peach tart and carrot brulee. However, my lasting memory of the Boathouse will definitely be the expansive cheese menu, with its hand-picked selection of cheeses and wines. Stinking Bishop washed down with a chilled glass of Chablis overlooking the river - now that's a perfect summer's evening!
