August Welcome to August in Oxford Our lead article this month features Wagamama, where Hannah and Sophia enjoyed a fabulous lunch – it’s hard work for some isn’t it! Other reviews this month include dinner at The Plough at Appleton, which has had a fantastic makeover, lunch at Cherwell Boathouse for two mums celebrating their birthday and three hungry kids after an enjoyable morning’s punting. We take another spin on the open top City Sightseeing bus for a tour around the dreaming spires, and for a different way to see Oxford, we visit Walton Street Cycles in Jericho to find out more about this versatile cycle shop. And don’t forget! There’s just one month until the first In Oxford and Oxfordshire Magazine Restaurant Awards, sponsored by Miele. At the time of going to press, we have just 145 of 300 tickets remaining – actually, make that 144! Get your tickets at www.inoxford.com. It should be a great night! Have a great August! An animated buzz greeted us as we stepped into Wagamama, a Japanese inspired restaurant located just beside the historical Covered Market. Its open and friendly atmosphere attracts hungry flocks from every age group and it did not fail to work its charm on us too. Sparingly yet elegantly spaced with tables set closely to one another, the room exudes an air of open luminescence. Once inside, we were welcomed and swiftly led to our table by one of the efficient team members. Then it came to the difficult part of our experience: the agony of choice! The clearly laid-out menu includes an excellent glossary with helpful information for allergy sufferers and for vegetarians. Wagamama concentrates mainly on serving savoury dishes from traditional Japanese cuisine – a welcome refreshment during a time in which a 'Japanese Kitchen' is often regarded as a synonym of Sushi and Sashimi. After a considerable period, wavering between numerous mouth-watering options and becoming hypnotised by the stream of wholesome, freshly prepared but speedily delivered food escaping nearby us via the kitchen (each dish is served as soon as it is cooked to ensure freshness), we finally decided on our dishes. Soon we found ourselves in front of generous portions of delicious, delicately presented food. The fact that even vegetarians can dine exquisitely here was instantly proven by the Yasai Katsu Curry - an aromatic curry-rice accompanied by crispy aubergine and butternut squash medallions embellished in breadcrumbs - and steamy Edamame as side-dish, the freshness of which was instantly noticeable. But carnivores don't miss out either: The spicy Chilli Squid side-dish is a must for seafood-lovers and the Ginger Chicken Udon (Japanese egg-free noodles with chicken, beansprouts, egg and onions, spiced with chilli, ginger and coriander) turned out to be just as tasty as the rest. Despite already being more than full after the main course and side dishes, the priceperformance ratio (which can hardly be surpassed) meant that we were unable to resist the dessert menu's lure. Our temptations lead us to a creamy Coconut Reika ice-cream topped with passionfruit coulis to crest a thoroughly enjoyable meal. We found that Wagamama not only offers delicious meals for agreeable prices but also provides a first-class service in a friendly environment - a rare combination! Plus they have an extensive kids menu (complete with activities to keep kids entertained) as well as offering take-out too! Unsurprisingly, the one thought flashing through our minds as we stepped back out on to the street was: we must return, soon! Attractions Review
The things that you don’t know about the City that you live in, well, you will find them out on this bus tour with a little added humour to boot! Will it rain or will it not? Slightly hesitant in our balmy climate, we walked to the station to embark on our open-top bus tour by City Sightseeing. We collected our tickets and were directed to the relevant stop. There are two types of buses, one that has a taped commentary and one with a live guide. We went for the live guide. First on, we went to the back in true childish fashion and plugged in before take off! This really is the only way to see Oxford; the views are amazing, being able to peek into the colleges with their immaculate lawns and centuries-old charm. Let’s face it, we all love to gossip, so finding out who went to which college was completely fascinating to me: from royalty and actors to world leaders, they have all studied at Oxford. It made me very proud to live here hearing all the life-changing events that have been initiated right here in little old Oxford. I drive around the City all day long and take for granted the architecture. If this is the only reason you do this tour then I can think of no better. We live in a beautiful City that is even more beautiful from 30 feet up. I’d always wondered why there is an Alice in Wonderland shop located quite a long way from the High Street; now that I know that the original sweet shop found there was Lewis Carroll’s inspiration for the old sheepshop in Alice Through the Looking-Glass, and so it would be a travesty for it to move. I loved hearing the history of the grand houses in Central North Oxford, too. Apparently the Oxford University college dons were originally not allowed to marry, and as when this changed the only way to snap up an eligible lady was to have a house, it’s not surprisingly the houses all went up fairly quickly! You can pop on and off the bus all day, so it’s easy to “do” Oxford in a day. With your ticket there are lots of discounts in shops and restaurants to make the day even cheaper. This is a great day out for all the family. It was great to do the tourist thing and see people from around the world enjoying this beautiful City. Thank you to City Sightseeing. Shopping Review
In Oxford, travelling by bicycle is known to be one of the most popular methods of transport with around 22,000 cyclists riding into and out of the city each day. Therefore ‘Bainton Bikes’ on Walton Street could not be more conveniently placed. Founded by Kevin Moreland and Honour Tomkinson, their bike hire company ‘Bainton Bikes Limited,’ combined with ‘Walton Street Cycles’ forms an enchanting shop offering anything from new bikes to bike accessories to repairs, to personalised cycling tours around Oxford. After meeting Honour herself she told us how they were overjoyed when the opportunity arose to take over ‘Walton Street Cycles’. The whole ethos of the shop is very friendly and knowledgeable; this is one place that really does care for their customers. Honour makes it clear that everyone here is more than happy to ‘offer free advice’ instead of just trying to make a sale. Walton Street cycles offers a wide range of excellently cared for bikes, all built and maintained in Oxford, supplying everything from mountain and hybrid bikes to children’s bikes and trailers. Honour and Kevin do seem truly enthusiastic about their bike shop, with Honour exclaiming ‘we get to sell the bikes that we love!’ and ‘everything that we sell we own as well so we do believe in the bikes we sell’ emphasising their true commitment. Honour also tells us that the business originally began when the two ‘realised that there wasn’t really anyone catering for large groups for hire in Oxford’ and so set up their own business from home (Bainton Bikes Limited.) They were later ‘approached by a local business man who had purchased Walton Street Cycles from John Wilson’ who sadly passed away. Kevin and Honour already knew the shop well and Kevin had even gone there to buy bicycle parts in his childhood and so they were thrilled when the opportunity arose. A nice touch is that Cycling Tours can be varied; Honour tells us they are willing to tailor cycle tours to the needs of their customers so that there is no need to feel you have to agree to a specific tour. One group of ladies, for example, were in Oxford on a business trip and wanted a relaxing break but knew the city well and so Bainton Bikes were able to plan a route exactly how they wanted (therefore devising a wonderful tour from Sandford upon Thames up along the river and ending at Orial college.) Bainton Bikes alongside with Walton Street Cycles definitely forms a business that everyone can benefit from allowing you to experience the very best of Oxford on a bike! Inside: Cherwell Boat House The Plough
Restaurant Review The Cherwell Boathouse The perfect lazy afternoon, why not try punting on the Cherwell river and a leisurely lunch at The Cherwell Boathouse restaurant, this hidden gem is slightly off the beaten track and is set behind the infamous Dragon School in North Oxford, overlooking the tranquil setting of the River Cherwell. The Boathouse is a charming restaurant with a quintessential English feel and a clientele and ambience befitting a university town. Its rustic charm and informal surroundings, mixed with a modern, diverse menu, make this restaurant shine out as the perfect choice for all age groups. A small bar area for pre-dinner drinks boasts good local ales including the famous Hook Norton ale, and there's an extensive wine list suitable for both novices and experts alike. The wines, which come from all over the world, are of a high quality. We chose a reasonably priced Rioja, which suggested that some of the more expensive wines from the cellar must have been extremely good (some priced at more then £250). Those with the most discerning and expensive palate would not be disappointed. The menu, three fabulous menus – Weekday lunch menu, A la carte and a Summer Set menu, is very obviously aimed at accommodating seasonal produce, with a balanced choice across all food types, including fish, red meat and some interesting game dishes. A range of modern British and French cuisine is served in an interesting way with intriguing twists to the fusion of ingredients. The vegetarian options were well thought out and unique - not at all the usual boring afterthought of most restaurants. The presentation of the dishes was executed to a very high standard. The meal was one of the best we have had in a long time, complemented by the attentive staff, who are welcoming and have a relaxed yet informal approach. With a set menu option as well as a la carte, The Boathouse is mindful of a range of financial budgets, and there is certainly something for all tastes. Dessert is our favourite part of any meal, and The Boathouse did not disappoint us. With a wide selection of delicious creations it was hard to choose just one - we had four different puddings including Pink blanc-mange, Lemon & lime cheesecake and Peach sorbet. However, my lasting memory of The Boathouse will definitely be the expansive cheese menu, with its hand-picked selection of cheeses and wines. Stinking Bishop washed down with a chilled glass of Chablis overlooking the river - now that's a perfect summer's afternoon! If you are thinking about having a private party why not contact the restaurant to find out how they can help. Restaurant Review
THE PLOUGH Nestled in the small village of Appleton, less than 6 miles outside of Oxford, lies a quaint country pub with a difference. The Plough Inn has a traditional, welcoming frontage, but what hides behind is a contemporary meets cosy interior, with a restaurant that boasts an impressive menu of fresh meat and fish, all sourced from local suppliers. On arrival we were greeted warmly by Sophie at the bar, which was laden with an impressive array of ales, lagers and wine, from which we chose a fruity Tempranillo. We were immediately made to feel right home and were seated by the window with a lovely view out into the beer garden. Looking through the menu, from the halloumi cheese kebabs for the vegetarians to succulent scallops or the rack of lamb, it was hard not to try everything! Between us we settled on the 10oz fillet steak, the halloumi cheese kebabs and also couldn’t quite resist adding a side of prawns to our feast. We certainly weren’t disappointed as the ample portions, which all come with julienne fries, Greek salad and rustic bread were placed in front of us, enticingly sizzling away on the hot volcanic rock plate that all of the main courses are served on. This unique way of serving your food definitely makes the meal more enjoyable, as it enables you to cook your food just the way you like it, lends itself to sharing (which means you get to try even more!) and it’s also lots of fun! Everything was delicious, and certainly filling which left very little room for dessert, but a quick look through the delectable pudding selection meant they were too hard to resist! After lots of deliberation we plumped for the classic, sticky toffee pudding, and we certainly weren’t disappointed; it was gooey deliciousness topped off perfectly with a blob of vanilla ice cream, and we polished off the lot! The Plough Inn is a little gem of a pub hidden away in the Oxfordshire countryside, but once you’ve found it, you’ll definitely want to go back again and again.
