August Welcome to August in Oxford The end of July brought a heat wave to the UK, and at the time of writing this I’m sincerely hoping it will continue on through August! After such a long and cold Winter, we all deserve some sunshine. With the warm weather we have seen some stunning outdoor performances from the likes of Tomahawk and the Oxford Shakespeare Company, and this continues in August with the Oxford University Dramatic Society’s rendition of A Comedy of Errors at the Bodleian Library quarter which looks to be a brilliant and quirky performance. If you have relatives or friends coming to see you during the Summer (I’m assuming ‘Summer’ will equal only the month of August) we’ve once again got some great suggestions inside this issue for accommodation, activities, and dining such as the luxurious 5-star Macdonald Randolph Hotel, the beautiful Waterperry Gardens, and fine dining at Cockadoo with an impressive Adele tribute singer. We’d fortunately booked our stay at Oxford’s only five star hotel on the eve of Good Friday, more by luck than judgement, so knew we could fully relax as Tina enjoyed a facial in the basement spa and I caught up on a few e-mails with a glass of champagne, courtesy of the hotel’s management. The room was magnificent. As far as suites go, this was first class yet still incredibly homely. Overlooking Oxford, I soon had the windows open to enjoy the fresh breeze of an unusually balmy March evening, considering the weather’s penchant for below zero temperatures so far this year. The lounge area was beautifully furnished, with sumptuous pieces underlining the hotel’s five star status. The bedroom was generous in size with a gargantuan bed. The bathroom was impressively finished and more than large enough for two to meander in and out. Tina returned from her facial full of compliments for the knowledgeable staff who had instantly relaxed her so she could enjoy the Decléor treatment to the full. She further relaxed with a glass of champagne prior to freshening up for dinner. ‘No hair brush’ exclaimed Tina. ‘I don’t need one.’ I replied, being rather folically challenged, soon realising that Tina needed the brush, not I. Fortunately, Boots were open late on a Thursday and I returned with the required brush, and we were on our way to dinner. The Restaurant at The Randolph, a double AA Rosette winner, is striking. High ceilings, coats of arms adoring the walls, crisp white tablecloths and attentive staff. The restaurant was just about full as we entered just after 8pm. We were soon served with an aperitif, fresh bread and a menu brimming with mouth-watering options. Tina chose the hand dived scallop, whilst I had the John Ross ‘award winning’ smoked salmon, accompanied by a half bottle of Macon Villages, as Tina stayed with champagne. For our mains, Tina plumped for the loin of venison and I went for the slow roasted pork belly. The food was superb, certainly the best meal we had enjoyed in Oxford for some time. Dessert was beyond us so we retired to the room and enjoyed our night’s sleep. We were both deep in slumber when a knock at the door woke us for breakfast in the room. More smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, fresh orange juice, pastries and tea – what a marvellous start to the day. It was most certainly a Good Friday. The Randolph is an institution. Perfectly placed, bang smack in the heart of Oxford, it’s difficult to want for anything. With thanks to Michael Grange and his excellent staff for a first class experience. Jousting Tournament Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th August: the battle will strike in deadly earnest and the Knights, as in medieval times, will give no quarter! Family Cycling Day Sunday 18th August: Enjoy the once a year opportunity to cycle around the picturesque Parkland of a World Heritage site. Bring your bicycle (and helmet) and cycle around the spectacular Queens Pool Lake, take in the scenery and fresh air, stop for a picnic and make it a day to remember. Visitors please note that this is not the event formerly known as 'Bike Blenheim Palace' and is solely a one off opportunity for families to cycle around the grounds at Blenheim Palace. First aid staff will be on site, however there will be no specialist bicycle events or exhibitors present. Visitors can cycle around the designated cycle routes at their own leisure.

British Gas SwimBritain Open Water Event Sunday 1st September: On 1st September join David Walliams and Olympic swimming silver medalist Keri-anne Payne at the open water leg of the British Gas SwimBritain programme 2013. Get fit, have fun and enjoy the rare chance to swim in The Great Lake at Blenheim Palace a World Heritage Site surrounded by beautiful parkland and scenery. British Gas SwimBritain is a new programme which aims to encourage half a million more people to swim regularly by 2015, consisting of a swimming relay challenge for teams of four with each team member swimming a distance of 1000m. The event is open to swimmers of all abilities and will take place at ten pools around the country, and one open water venue, Blenheim Palace.

In 1818 St Martin’s church was rebuilt complete with tower. However, the church, apart from its tower, was demolished in 1896. The tower is all that remains today. Two ‘quarter boys’ who hit the bells at every quarter hour adorn the east facade of the church clock. Climb up 99 steps to get a sweeping view of Oxford’s spires.

St Michael at the North Gate is the oldest Church Tower in Oxford and is definitely worth a visit! There’s also a treasury of silver and bronze dating back to the 1600s and you can also see a copy of the church accounts dating back hundreds of years. The tower is the easiest climb in Oxford, with good solid stairs including a handrail. From the top of the tower there is a marvellous view of the city of Oxford and its famous "dreaming spires".
