The Feathers Hotel, Bar and Restaurant

One of our favourite places has always been The Feathers Hotel in Woodstock. We have been to eat many times to celebrate Birthdays and Anniversaries but we have never stayed the night there. So arriving on a crisp November evening we were welcomed with a real log fire and then shown to our very own sumptuous suite. This was the start of a very special evening. There is nothing better than going down to the bar for a pre dinner drink knowing that that’s it and you are not leaving until after breakfast! What’s more The Feathers boasts the foremost dedicated gin bar in the country. Testament to this is that they do serve Mahon Gin which is my favourite gin, and not to my knowledge to be found in any other bar in Oxfordshire. And boy! they certainly make a great g and t! which brought back happy memories of Menorca. Sue had her customary glass of champagne while we decided what to eat. Whilst deliberating we were introduced to Pete Saunders the Hotel Manager. We had a lively discussion and we congratulated him on his appointment and then Pete kindly gave us a run down of the menu that evening. After some debate, I decided on the native East Coast Lobster Ravioli with fennel and orange butter sauce and Sue went for the salad of Oxford Blue cheese with, walnuts and beetroot marshmallow. For main course we shared the Peg Top Farm Dexter Beef Double Rib with Autumn vegetables, gratin potatoes and red wine sauce. The beef was served and carved at the table by Magic (that was the name of our waiter by the way) who was extremely attentive throughout our meal. The bar manager is Nuno, who comes from Portugal and helped us choose a lovely bottle of Rioja Crianze, Conde de la Valdemar 2009. We also had a bottle of still Harrogate Water. For dessert Sue had the selection of farm house cheeses with dried fruit chutney and artisan biscuits whilst I went for the strawberry and lavender Eton Mess. The ingredients however weren’t at all messy as they were separated on a slate and were beautiful. So our special evening was really amazing, the atmosphere was wonderfully relaxed, cosy and convivial and to know that we just had to go upstairs was the icing on the cake. We laid in and got down for breakfast well before last orders at 10.00am and surprisingly devoured the salmon and scrambled eggs. St Michael at the North Gate is the oldest Church Tower in Oxford and is definitely worth a visit! There’s also a treasury of silver and bronze dating back to the 1600s and you can also see a copy of the church accounts dating back hundreds of years. The tower is the easiest climb in Oxford, with good solid stairs including a handrail. From the top of the tower there is a marvellous view of the city of Oxford and its famous "dreaming spires". 4 Girls 4 Harps By Candlelight Thursday 19th December: They are a harp quartet of four female musicians and the show is a melee of beautiful Christmas tunes on the harp and some non festive favourites. The ladies break between pieces to talk a little with the audience about where the tunes came from and increase the festive feel. And – all ebign well – it’ll all be set to candlelight in our lovely auditorium. The quartet formed in 2000 at the Royal College of Music. Jdp Chamber Music Series Saturday 7th December: MATTHEW TRUSCOTT (violin), ROBIN MICHAEL (cello), DANIEL TONG (piano) Piano Trios by HAYDN and BEETHOVEN. Haydn’s late piano trios contain some his most subtle, lyrical and witty music. Indeed, eminent pianist and writer Charles Rosen has called these pieces ‘the most brilliant piano works before Beethoven’ – so it is apt that this evening’s concert also features a piano trio from the latter composer. Full of typically Beethovenian energy and dynamism, the trio’s ‘Ghost’ nickname appears to refer to the eerie and mysterious middle movement. A great home from home feeling

On a pleasant November 5th, we took the short taxi ride from Headington to the exquisite Vanbrugh House Hotel, Oxford’s newest hotel and restaurant in St Michael’s Street. Oxford was busy. Not only was it Firework’s Night, but The Oxford Union was a hive of activity, - the hotel is located directly opposite this Oxford institution. The hotel has a welcoming lounge area which doubles up as a reception with no unnecessary fanfare. With just 22 individual bedrooms and suites, checking in and out is more of a laidback affair in boutique hotels, and within minutes we were being show to majestic Vicarage Suite. As the pictures show, not only is the room good enough to stay in for an eternity, the bathroom leaves you spoilt for choice – bathe in one of two baths or shower AND watch the TV?!?!? Options, options! Our attentive host, Michaela, showed us on to the gorgeous private terrace, which must be heaven in the summer for breakfast or a drink before dinner, and, no doubt, after! The room is superb, quite possibly one of the best we’ve ever stayed in. We made our way to the restaurant located in the basement of the hotel. The restaurant is perfect for the hotel and it’s a perfect hotel restaurant. Tina and I were really impressed. The food was excellent and the service second to none. We enjoyed our starters and mains but had little room for dessert until we were offered a special treat from the chef, a trio of desserts on one plate. How we could go from struggling to accommodate one dessert to finishing off three is beyond me, but we did it in style! Although it was barely past 10pm when we finished, we decided on an early night – well, it was a week night – and fell asleep watching the TV in that fabulous four poster. I seem to remember telling you it was a week night, but best laid plans and all that and we were up at 8.30am – oh dear! A good hour after we were supposed to get up. Never mind, work could wait. Getting ready in that bathroom was a Disneyland experience! I had a bath but had to at least sample the incredible freestanding shower as well. And then it was off for the final scene. Breakfast in the restaurant. Fresh fruit, naughty pastries, cereal, fresh juice and an even naughtier Eggs Royale – poached egg with salmon for me and Eggs Benedicte for Tina. The perfect start to the day. We said our goodbyes and thank you’s and wondered how on earth we could justify going back. I’m sure we’ll think of something. The Chequers at Burcot

As the rain sheeted down outside, the lure of the roaring log fire was hypnotic. Like rather bedraggled moths to a flame, we dragged ourselves onto the comfy red leather settees, and warmed ourselves before the dancing flames. The Silver Fox & I were early for lunch, so we investigated the extensive draught beer selection, working our way along the generous bar, from left to right. We were about to reset left, when our impersonation of a human typewriter was thwarted, and we were shown to our table, tastefully decorated in black & cream, reflecting the Chequers motif. Purely in the course of due diligence, we chose our wines by the glass - 16 of them, kept under vacuum in a Verre de Vin, not to mention the champagne and sparkling wines, catering for both the familiar and the adventurous. So armed with an adventurous Brazilian Pinot Grigio and a familiar Australian Reserve Chardonnay, we tucked into our sublime starters crab risotto for me and mushrooms in truffle oil for the Silver Fox. A hulking fish pie then materialised, peeking out from beneath a duvet of fluffy mash, whilst my pork belly came delicately presented on a wooden platter, with triple-cooked chips nestling alongside in their own basket. I had been hoping for some leftovers, but the Fox had made a clean kill, and was now busy polishing the edges of his bowl, pronouncing himself extremely satisfied. Meanwhile, the Rioja had mysteriously evaporated, so we moved on down the wine list, to an organic Sangiovese, pleasurably dry, with soft tannins. It was still distinctly bandit weather outside, so rather than take any chances, we decided to stay put, and collect our just desserts. My popcorn pannacotta was attractively presented on a black slate slab, the creamy hinterland juxtaposed against the salted caramel outskirts. For somebody who ‘never eats dessert’, the Fox had done a surprisingly efficient job, only a few crumbs providing a clue to the deep purple blackberry and almond slice that had sat there a few moments previously. As we lingered over coffee, conversation turned to the blackboard story of the Secret Highwayman behind us, whose harness was evidently discovered last century, hidden in the pub’s chimney breast. We decided that as smash and grab raids went, he could have done worse than to have simply stayed inside at The Chequers - cooking of this quality, really is a steal. The Kazbar on Cowley Road

What made dinner at Kazbar on the Cowley Road so enjoyable was the atmosphere –great live music, authentic décor and, best of all, really friendly staff. From reserving a table to ordering food the Kazbar staff were helpful – advising me that there was live flamenco music on Thursday evenings and there would be a good crowd (they weren’t kidding!), and helping make selections from the menu. We arrived at 7.30 while the restaurant was still quiet, were warmly welcomed, shown straight to a table and began to soak in our Moroccan/Spanish surroundings. The restaurant has a range of small and medium tables with Moroccan textile cushions and metal lamps, providing intimate spaces for couples and larger spaces for groups. The drinks menu offers a range of imported beers and medium priced mostly Spanish wines (£15-£25 per bottle), as well as cocktails with a Moroccan twist - we tried an excellent Moroccan Ice Tea and Golden Margarita as well as a couple of glasses of a very tasty Malbec. The food menu, using specialist imported ingredients, continues the authentic Spanish feel with a range of tapas, divided into sections of dips and mezze, cheese, meat, fish, vegetarian and specials, with six to eight options on each. This choice, while not intimidating, made selecting fun but tricky, with advice from the waitress we ordered a range of dishes. They arrived beautifully presented in their terracotta bowls and every one of them was delicious – the Babaganoush (aubergine dip), Harrisa Potatoes, and Chorizo with Prawns were particularly good! As we enjoyed our food the restaurant filled up with a mix of students, couples, groups and music fans there to enjoy the flamenco band. The music was excellent, the atmosphere buzzing and the food delicious. The food was only part of the experience as Kazbar welcomes a range of guests by offering half-price tapas before 6pm to suit the student budget; live Spanish music on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, draws in the local Spanish crowd; while in the summer tables on the street and opening the roof turn this bit of the Cowley Road into a piece of the Med! Overall Kazbar pressed all the right buttons, combining great atmosphere, good food and drinks, excellent staff, and good prices. It’s a great venue on the Cowley road either as a local or as a change, but once visited you’ll certainly be back again!

We visited The Evenlode on a wintery Monday night, so the sight of a big burning open fire in the restaurant was a welcome one. David, the owner, was very passionate and knowledgeable about food and wine and explained that his wish was to create a fine dining experience for his more discerning guests, sectioning off a certain area of the restaurant next to the fire where guests could enjoy their meal in privacy. Our meal began with starters of crab & lobster lasagne (£8.95) which had a good flavour of both. The mushroom and black truffle ravioli (£8.95) had generous shavings of black truffle and very enjoyable. The palate cleanser of lemon and champagne sorbet was a nice touch. Onto our mains. The pan fried skate wing with capers (£24.95) was a delicious and enjoyable dish. My guest had the Welsh rack of lamb with minted butter (£25.95) which had a more dramatic appearance served pink and juicy with paper frills on the bones no less. We enjoyed a generous selection of potatoes and vegetables. There is a good choice of fine wines on the wine menu. David recommended a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape (£49.95), served in large glass goblets - this was certainly a welcome addition to the meal. Leaving little space for desserts I had the chocolate fudge cake whereas my guest had the cheese board with a dizzying array of great English cheeses to choose from. The service was very attentive and friendly throughout. A leisurely amount of time was left between courses so the whole meal was a relaxed affair. The restaurant welcomes children and has an area where you can take dogs inside. They also have a huge garden that comes to life with a bouncy castle in the summer. The Evenlode’s specialty is a carvery which you can enjoy throughout the week, especially popular at the weekend.
