@inoxford

Welcome to Living in Oxford Welcome everyone to the February 2017 edition of Living In Oxford Magazine! Well hasn’t January just flown by? No? “It dragged,” you say? Well hopefully you’ll find something to pass the time in this issue...How about checking out the annual Oxford International Art Fair at the end of Feb (24th-26th) taking place at the beautiful Oxford Town Hall. The exhibition will give Art Collectors and Art Enthusiasts a great opportunity to buy directly from the artist that has travelled all the way to Oxford. A unique experience for both visitors and exhibitors. Read more in their article in this issue. We’ve also got something a little different for you this time – We here at Living In Oxford Magazine moved offices over the Christmas break to the beautiful Weston-on-the-Green and the move could not have been possible without the help of Oxford-based removals service, Headington Carriers. Our Chairman, Colin Rosser, has written a review of the experience so please do check it out in this issue. We also have a Valentine’s feature inside, for those of us who perhaps haven’t quite decide what we want to do yet. Fear not! There are plenty of events, beautiful locations and restaurants around Oxford to choose from, so take a look at our suggestions! And last but certainly not least, we’d like to announce that tickets for the annual Business In Oxford event are now on sale. Read on to make sure you don’t miss out on this great business opportunity. As always, thank you for reading, and have a great February. Lorna Dodson Assistant Editor, Living In Oxford Magazine

Where the Dark Fish Swim Where the Dark Fish Swim, is the stunning debut novel from Oxfordshire writer Mark Bishop. The author certainly doesn't pull any punches in this dark and brooding drama and deals with some deeply challenging issues depression, domestic abuse and abandonment – with great care and skill. Whilst there is no doubt the subject matter can make for uncomfortable reading at times, the narrative is beautifully crafted and drags you towards its destination with a mixture of intrigue, hope and foreboding. The story centres around a young father, Michael, who we learn has abandoned his wife and child. At the outset of the story Michael explains his intent is to try and explain to his young son, Huck, why he abandoned his family and why, very soon, he must do it again. At the same time Michael attempts to reconcile his own difficult past and to explain about the mysterious dark fish. I think what struck me most about this novel is the way Mark develops the characters and their backgrounds little by little throughout the book. As a reader you feel compelled to keep turning the pages to find out how the past interlinks with the current chain of events and your feelings for almost every character change throughout the novel. Central to this feeling is Michael himself and throughout the book you are torn between wanting to root for him, despise him and pity him in equal measure. All of this is coupled with a fascinating twist that I guarantee you will not see coming! I find myself reflecting on the story and the characters long after finishing the book and it is one I will certainly return to. I am looking forward to reading more from the author and encourage him to keep up the great work after this fantastic start. 'Where the Dark Fish Swim' is available from Amazon on Kindle from £1.99 and in paperback from £7.99. Thinking of Oscar Twitter: twitter.com/thinkingofoscar Email: thinkingofoscar@gmail.com Web: www.thinkingofoscar.com Thinking of Oscar is an Oxfordshire based charity set up in memory of Oscar Cole who died unexpectedly aged just 16 months in June 2014. The mission of the charity is to improve the experiences of children and their families in hospital care. The current campaign is to fund a new procedures unit into the John Radcliffe Children's Hospital, Oxford. This will benefit hundreds and hundreds of children each year by ensuring that simple operations take place within the familiar environment of the children's hospital. On Sunday 5th June Oscar's parents, alongside 85 other family and friends, will both be participating in the Blenheim Triathlon in order to raise the £100,000 required to build the unit. Please come along on the day to lend your support to the team who will be starting out at 1:30pm or sponsor them direct at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/DandHTOOFundraising2016. Services Review:

Headington Carriers Reviewed by Colin Rosser

When you have lived somewhere for 37 years, moving is not something you can enter into without a good deal of planning, thought and careful consideration as to which removal company you use. On top of this, moving from over 7,000 square feet of accommodation to somewhere a little over 2,000 square feet certainly brings to mind ’fitting a quart into a pint pot’! Given that we were initially moving into rented accommodation whilst obtaining planning permission for our new home gave us some flexibility, there were still three different destinations for our furniture. The move was basically carried out over two weeks from the 23rd November to the 6th December. We first met Daniel Barrett, the manager of Headington Carriers, on the 27th September and immediately felt we were in safe hands. My worries about moving the snooker table (with 6 x 70 kg slates) from our basement, moving cumbersome gym equipment, large Bay trees planted in huge terracotta pots and a great deal of office equipment, were all put to rest. We accepted their quote which I thought was very reasonable and decided to look no further. This company has a depth of resources, with men and vehicles in good supply. No wonder they are first choice for Thames Valley Police and the local NHS. As arranged, they dismantled the snooker table and packed all that was needed prior to the 24th and when the actual move happened on that day, everything went to plan. Of course I should have realised ‘that was the easy bit’! We cherry picked the furniture we needed for the rental and my wife soon made it look just like home! Getting everything out of a very large house is some task. On that final day the 6th December there were 4 large Headington Carrier Vehicles in our drive and it was bedlam. Two full skips were to be collected and there was a team of cleaners making sure everything was as neat and tidy as possible. It didn’t help that it was a filthy day and didn’t stop raining. The Bay tree pots had absorbed a lot of rain and now weighed something like 100 kg each. There was the usual delay with completion but we were out by 2.30pm. Some furniture is now in store at Headington Carriers and some of the garden furniture is in the stables at our new site. I know moving is not something I have done for a while but we chose the right company and I have no hesitation in recommending Headington Carriers, lead by Peter Barrett, Managing Director and his son Daniel.
