February Writing this intro it’s mid Jan and the snow is all around so hopefully by the time you’re reading this we’re not feeling as stranded as we are in the office right now! Our front cover is adorned by one of our favourites, Blenheim Palace which opens for business on 9th February with a spectacular exhibition – LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! which celebrates many of the films and television programmes in which Blenheim has starred. It’s one not to miss so make sure you make a date with the Palace in February (exhibition open until 1st February). We’ve also got a review of the new Big Bang in Oxford Castle Quarter, a favourite from its days in Walton Street, now in bigger premises at the Quarter. Once again In Oxford Magazine is packed full of great ideas for days out, events and eating out – why not celebrate Chinese New Year and listen to the wonderful Emily Reed live on 9th February at Cockadoo, a fabulous Chinese Restaurant in Nuneham Courtenay, just a short drive from Oxford. Make sure you take advantage of some simply unbelievable deals on the VOUCH part of the www.inoxford.com website – great deals for Oxfordshire restaurants, hotels and much more. Enjoy February. Restaurant Review
Oxford Castle Quarter has a new restaurant, and it isn’t one of the Chains which have previously been the sole occupants, but instead the locally loved Big Bang, previously serving sausage and mash for 8years in Jericho. Max Mason set out to open a restaurant which served only Great British food, all sourced from within 20 miles of Oxford, and the new place proves that The Big Bang has grown up, a long way. It’s roomy, light and bright, with room for over 150 people, with a barbecue terrace where there’s clearly scope for some great fun once the warmer months reach us. We had to choose between Sausages or their Brit of the Day, a rolling selection of classic British dishes, today’s dish was Toad in the Hole, but the ‘clear favourite’, Shepherd’s Pie was on tomorrow, if we fancied returning! They proclaim to serve the best Sunday Roasts in Oxford, cream teas and the tastiest Full English Breakfast daily. Our party of 5 was here to experience the Whole Hog, a £60 dish that serves 4-6; one of every sausage on the menu, with enough mash, vegetables and gravy to go round. It’s a great to be able to share such a big feast with friends, as everyone tucks into the shared sausages, working out which of the 24 varieties of sausage are tastiest. Favourites were Wild Boar and Pigeon sausage, gluten-free Venison sausage and vegetarian Basil & Vine Tomato sausage, with tasty spring onion mash. Service is friendly and informative, not pushy. They don’t pressure you into buying side dishes, our server assured us that the main courses come with enough veg – A rare treat to hear, where every other restaurant you go to seems to be aiming to mug you before you leave the front door. We did opt for some extra hand-cut chips, keen to see they don’t just serve sausage and mash, and were impressed – It’s clear that everything here is home produced with love, nothing coming out of a packet and being thrown into the microwave. A special mention for the drinks menu of Oxfordshire ales and interesting wines. You can enjoy pale ales, winter ales, stouts, porters, almost any variety of beer or cider you could imagine, all sourced amazingly from Oxfordshire. Live jazz each Tuesday night and the promise to have a selection of sausages made for any special event – We were chuckling at their plans for Sausages of Love for Valentine’s Day and ensuring that we booked a table – What better way to tell your partner you love them, than with an aphrodisiac sausage! 42 Oxford Castle Quarter, Oxford, OX1 1AY Tel: 01865 249 413 Web: www.thebigbangrestaurants.co.uk
