The Perch At the end of a winding road, the welcoming lights of The Perch offer an unforgettable treat. This newly refurbished French restaurant has period stone walls, wooden beams and a log fire, with a specially selected menu using the best local produce. There was a selection of eight starters and eight main courses, and from the first glance, my mouth began to water. Starters included white onion velouté, chicken liver parfait with home-made bread, ham hock terrine, and warm crispy goat’s cheese. The manager, Henrik Andersen, was amazingly attentive, giving us time to peruse the menu and then enthusiastically describe the dishes. As we eagerly awaited the first course, we nibbled on the delicious cake-like bread and were treated to a wine tasting. In his lilting accent and profesional manner, he introduced us to three carefully selected wines. The starters arrived promptly and were more impressive than I had anticipated. I opted for the warm crispy goat’s cheese, delicately presented on a black slate, accompanied by walnut salad and deliciously sweet smoked pear purée which swirled around the radishes. My companion’s dish was piled high: tomatoes, green salad and Pesto with a crispy pastry base, which was devoured quite swiftly. For the main course, I chose the sea bass fillet and my partner opted for wild mushroom fricassée. The special for the evening was slow roasted belly of pork with roast pear and pomme purée, crispy brawn and boudin noir. Other dishes included Confit of Barbary duck with haricot beans, Cornish scallops feuillete with shellfish bisque, and braised ox cheek bourguignon. This was a cordon bleu menu worthy of outstanding praise, and the dishes did not disappoint. The sea bass was exquisitely cooked, on a bed of crispy basil polenta, bathed in a red bouillabaisse sauce with a light fennel crunch salad. Although the polenta cake was a little too heavy, I savoured the distinct flavour of the fish perfectly balanced with the accompaniments. The mushroom fricassée looked equally delicious: between two perfectly structured oblongs of pastry lay five different types of mushroom and the Morel sauce was particularly tasty. For pudding, I chose the (ashamedly English) sticky toffee pudding, and my partner chose the assiette de fromages. My fantastic dessert was a steaming sticky sponge drenched in a caramelised sauce and topped with a mountain of delicious thick clotted cream. It was beautifully rich and sated my sweet tooth, but I simply couldn’t manage all of it. Henrik personally brought a cheese board for my companion to choose: mild goat’s cheese, a stonking Camembert, some Oxford blue and, la piece de resistance, a small chunk of Livarot cheese, which has a reputation for being extremely powerful. Altogether, a night at The Perch offers outstanding cuisine, attentive service and a wonderful atmosphere. The food really did surpass expectations and was artistically presented at every course. Top marks for the head chef Stephane Pasquier and the indomitable manager: this restaurant is an exquisite Phoenix that will not disappoint. We are delighted to welcome the regular panellist of ‘Have I Got News for You’ and ‘Mock the Week’ to Cornerstone. Where is it? What happens there? Is it a shop in the Orchard Centre? …it’s an Arts Centre! Can I see famous people in shows? Are there classes and workshops? How do I find out what’s going on? Cornerstone is a fun and welcoming venue in Didcot, just opposite the cinema in the new town square. There are three seasons a year packed full of stand up comedy, theatre, music, family and children’s shows. You can see great performers touring – Michael McIntyre, John Bishop, Chris Addison, Fairport Convention, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School – and many shows sell out. If you want to be one of the first to see what’s coming up next, go to www.cornerstone-arts.org to sign up to the Mailing List and check the What’s On guide. This December, there’s a packed programme of Christmas capers for all the family. Get your loved ones together and enjoy one of the great theatre shows on offer. December starts with a show especially for little ones telling tales from the Arabian Nights on Sunday 12. There are seven performances of our family Christmas show Beauty and the Beast running from Wednesday 15 – Sunday. Then the very last show before the Christmas break is Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol on Tuesday 21, ideal for all the family. Some seasonal music will get you in the mood, with the beautiful sound from Voices at the Door of Midwinter Songs and Carols on Sunday 5, then the wonderful Forces Sweethearts on Saturday 11, taking us on a Christmas trip down memory lane with an uplifting nostalgic show perfect for grandparents and great grandparents! You'll be amazed by the special live art project running throughout the month to decorate all the venue's beautiful glass windows, and there are seasonal classes and workshops for children too. Couture bar and café is another highlight of a trip to Cornerstone. Open during the day and in the evenings for drinks before and after every show, there’s also a tasty Christmas menu on offer. To book a table, call Couture on 01235 815670. New Year novelties include over 30 shows and 70 classes or workshops. Shopping Review The University of Oxford Shop The University of Oxford shop sits on the High Street very near King Edward Street. The appearance is understated and consistent with the interior. This is no glossy, flashy tourist money grabber, but promises quality in its ambience. The shop is fitted tastefully with pleasant wooden shelving, and a blue theme that persists within and without. The pride in Oxford is quite tangible. Displays are well mounted, not overcrowded and the range of merchandise varies between low cost items to the more expensive, all the while being attainable and of good quality. I observed staff being quite lively in their service to customers, and was confident that I could command their full attention in an instant. I was impressed by the leather office items, the clothing range and the display of quality silver items. Elsewhere was a display of enamel badges bearing the crests of the various colleges, and I handled various items such as reproduced Gargoyles and items representing characters from Lewis Carroll’s Alice books. At the rear of the shop is a back room displaying various items of clothing with Oxford logos. Being a wheelchair user I was unable to use the stairs to more closely examine this room, though my view from the top of the short flight of stairs gave me a good view of the items, and I noted that in the front of the shop, some clothing samples were displayed. I am confident that, should I ask, various items would have been fetched for my inspection. For such a small shop though, there was plenty to absorb me in the front. I took some time breathing in that leather smell and browsing the section of books on offer. I noted that most books gave wonderful views of Oxford in quality format, but I also saw poetry and some history on offer. I myself have lived in Oxford the past 20 years, but noted that there were not just items for the visiting tourist, and also not confined to the Student who might spend a limited number of years here, but items suitable for people like me who live here and take a pride in the city. I was being dutiful in my inspection as I looked amongst the maps, bookmarks and smaller items that might take the Tourist’s impulse buy, but felt myself eager to own other items - reproductions of historical maps that I should enjoy on my walls, the aforementioned leather writing set that could accompany me to meetings. I could become quite broke but happy here. Review by Gina Ravens 106 The High Street Oxford OX1 4BW Tel: 01865 247414 Web: www.oushop.com

Announcement
Science Oxford is pleased to announce the acquisition of Macclesfield House next to the Oxford Castle Mound with a plan to open a new centre for science and enterprise within 5 years, which will include a visitor attraction and an enterprise centre. The visitor attraction will provide memorable and inspiring science - themed experiences and feature an extensive range of science focused education and public engagement activities including seminars, workshops, interactive events and programmes. The enterprise centre will have rentable office space, some conferencing facilities and an exclusive environment to encourage networking. Foster + Partners have been appointed architects to create a stunning contemporary building that upholds Oxford’s architectural tradition. Inside the centre, three galleries: dreaming spires to screaming tyres; hands on, minds open and science aLive will provide the core elements of the visitor experience. They will be complemented by the sphere, a large digital immersive theatre with a domed roof ideal for live shows and planetarium presentations. Dreaming spires to screaming tyres will be a brief and updatable introductory AV experience, detailing the history of science in Oxford. It will seek to explain how the links between creative people, major universities and an ideal location have made Oxford and Oxfordshire one of the best places in the world to do science. Hands on, minds open will combine hands-on exhibits with digital artwork to create a rich, stimulating environment encouraging younger visitors and families to try things out for themselves, awakening their curiosity and imagination and challenging some of their assumptions about science and engineering. Science aLive will be aimed at older children and will provide a regularly changing series of inspirational narratives showing how science in our region is changing the world. The sphere will be an immersive audio-visual theatre showing locally produced, science themed presentations and interactive astronomer-led planetarium shows. We have estimated the cost of the centre to £30 million, of which £10 million has already been found. The remaining £20 million will be raised from private individuals, trusts and foundations over the next two years. Much of the present work of Science Oxford will continue as we fundraise and plan; we will continue to offer public and family programmes at Science Oxford Live, to deliver outreach programmes to schools, and to connect local science businesses to the wider community through the STEM Ambassadors programme and student placement schemes. We will also remain involved in the Innovation and Growth Team, the local enterprise partnership and Venturefest. The new centre for science and enterprise is a project for Oxford and the region, and for that reason we would like to engage in a consultation process to hear what people would like to see in a new cultural centre for science. Event Information
The Oxford International Women’s Festival has been running successfully for 22 years and aims to highlight women’s local, national and international issues. It is also a supporter of women and organisations campaigning for equal rights and opportunities. The theme for 2011 is ‘Women and Well-being’ and will focus on health issues, sport, dance, music, and energising activities that promote a sense of wellness. The Festival always includes the celebration of International Women’s Day on 8th March with a launch event at the Town Hall. Running from Monday 28th February until Sunday 13th March 2011, there will be a fantastic variety of events happening in various venues throughout Oxford city and the wider county. The Festival promises an exciting and informative line up of events including exhibitions, workshops, topical talks, performances and social events celebrating women’s achievements in sport, science, film, literature, theatre and more. A dedicated group of local and international women from all backgrounds, beliefs and cultures coordinate the Festival on a voluntary basis throughout the year, organising fundraising and sponsored events, marketing, designing and advertising the programme of events, and pulling together community groups, charities and businesses who hold events during the Festival period. If you would like to volunteer as a fundraiser, organise sponsored events or be part of the planning committee, please contact Anna Hobson or Debbie Hollingsworth (details below). Also, if you would like to volunteer as a steward during the Festival itself, or have any specialist skills that may be of benefit in design, photography, project management or marketing, please do get in touch. Due to the financial climate, our funding is sadly a lot less than in previous years so your support is greatly appreciated in whatever capacity. We have Festival t-shirts and books for sale at reasonable prices, and we run several fundraising events leading up to the beginning of the Festival, so do look out for us and come and get involved. The Town Hall Launch Event on 8th March opens from 3pm until 9pm, offering a wide range of stalls for charities, local businesses and community groups. All participants are promoting health and well-being and are aiming to raise awareness and celebrate a healthy body and a healthy mind. There will be an exclusive performance showcasing the work of a small theatre group to round off the evening. Entrance fee will apply. There is still time to apply for inclusion as a stall holder by contacting Anna Hobson by 31st December 2010. Anna Hobson, Programme Coordinator: annacreates@yahoo.com Debbie Hollingsworth, Festival Coordinator: hollingsworthdebbie40@yahoo.com Check out our website at www.oxfordwomen.co.uk Find us on Facebook: Oxford International Women’s Festival page The full programme of events will be distributed early 2011 and are free of charge.

Services Review Rachel Boyes is no stranger to Excel Dry Cleaners which she became the proud owner of on 10th August earlier this year. After all, she has been working there for thirteen years since joining former owner, John Warburton, in her first ever working role. But life as owner of a business she loves with a passion is pretty much as it was as an employee. “Although I appreciate the added responsibilities of being the owner of the business, I don’t actually feel any different to how I have done for the past thirteen years. I absolutely love this business, being in Summertown and the customers who come in on a regular basis, many of whom are now good friends.” Rachel speaks fondly of her customers, especially one lady who comes in like clockwork. “We have one lovely customer who comes in at 8.45am every Thursday. You can set your watch by her. She didn’t come in for a couple of weeks once and I thought the clocks were wrong and I’d missed her. Apparently her daughter was having a baby!” Dealing with everything from dry cleaning to repairs and stain removal, and items from wedding dresses to suits and from theatre costumes to uniforms for surrounding schools and colleges, Rachel is very happy with the business model as it is and has made very few changes. By her own admission, it’s very much ‘business as usual’. “John had the business running like clockwork and there is very little need to change something if it’s working so well. I am fortunate to have Jo Spillane who has worked with me for eight years, and also Mark Graham (who supplied the excellent photos for this review) is also a massive support for me. “Even though I still feel like an employee rather than an employer, it is gradually dawning on me that this is my baby. I am very proud of it and wouldn’t be able to run it without John’s input in setting up such a well run business. I do miss him, but he pops in from time to time with a few words of encouragement, and I know where he is in case I need any help. Shaw Gibbs have also been a massive support to me on the accountancy and general business administration side. I appointed them as soon as I took over and it’s great that they are literally on my doorstep.” With great staff, loyal customers and thirteen years of experience, there is no doubt Rachel will continue to thrive as one of Oxford’s favourite dry cleaning businesses. Excel is open 6 days a week from 8.30am to 5.30pm. Reviewed By Richard Rosser Photographs taken by Mark Graham Excel Dry Cleaners 274 Banbury Road Oxford OX2 7DZ Tel: 01865 511773
