December Welcome to December in Oxford As we approach our 10th Birthday edition (February 2012) we look forward to a bumper Christmas to end a difficult year for everyone on a high. Adorning the cover this December is Rose Lyburn of Casa Rose in Walton Street. This is a great shop for a very special gift for someone special – even if that’s you! We have some great reviews for The Oxford International Women’s Festival, the wonderful South Pacific at The New Theatre and an In Oxford Magazine favourite, The University of Oxford Shop. VOUCH has now taken off and you can buy a huge range of vouchers from our www.inoxford.com website. We are adding more vouchers all of the time and will be launching a dedicated site for VOUCH in the new year where you will be able to purchase electronic vouchers to use immediately. Thanks to all of our readers for your support this year and we will see you in 2012! Have a great Christmas Richard Rosser Editor, In Oxford Magazine

A hidden gem in the heart of Jericho. Since launching as a small gift shop in 2004, Casa Rose has come a long way. Back then, style-setting Rose Lyburn spotted a gap in the market for a relaxed, charming, quirky boutique. Soon putting her stamp on it, Rose brought a new kind of shopping experience to Oxford. Sprinkled with old Hollywood glamour and Parisian chic, the shop now boasts a unique and glittering array of gifts, jewellery and women’s fashion. Our main focus now is what our customers want, and giving them the feel-good factor. Our database recently reached 2,500; these loyal customers from all over the UK are the most important focus, what keeps us moving forward. We’re all about providing the skilled help so many shops lack on the high street, as well as beautiful, eclectic pieces. We feel we put the fun and enjoyment back into shopping, and know that women love to walk away with something special, something that can be found nowhere else. Sparkling jewels, cosmic scarves and endless heart warming gifts are only one part of our treasure trove. Rails run all around the shop, draped in our new, more focused fashion selection. Gone are the bigger labels, sensing our customers desire a more individual look and feel. Effortlessly simple yet striking designs, combined with sumptuous, high quality fabrics. We are well known for style with a difference throughout Oxford and this year Rose took on fashion events at Ascot and Cheltenham. These shows kicked off a storm of success, and Casa Rose was well received. There will absolutely be more events in the future, and we’ll always have complimentary tickets for customers who would like to come along. These days, Rose finds herself more and more in position to be advising and styling ladies on a weekly basis, appointments are even being made! Women are looking for help, from vintage look necklaces to cosy Paris knits, you name it. We are all about bringing a look together. We don’t want to be just a shop full of shelves, we are your tailor made secret wardrobe. At Casa Rose, we feel times are changing. Hand in hand with the likes of Marie Claire magazine, the world of e-commerce and social media will become our way forward to wider brand expansion. The team at the shop love facebook and twitter, always adding pictures of new stock and updating our followers with the things we get up too! Looking to the future, we plan on expanding towards eBay and Amazon, creating new ways for our ladies to explore planet Casa Rose. Of course, we are still looking for the perfect second branch. Rose personally puts her success down to loyal and faithful customers, ‘Because without them where would I be. They are real women with real lives.’ Described as ‘The Chocolat of Walton Street’, Casa Rose is more than just a boutique, and this is just the beginning. 74A Walton Street Oxford OX2 6EA Tel: 01865 510 191 Web: www.casaroseoxford.com Twitter: @casaroseboudoir Facebook: www.facebook.com/casaroseoxford

The Oxford International Women’s Festival has been running successfully for more than 20 years and aims to highlight women’s local, national and international issues. It is also a supporter of women and organisations campaigning for equal rights and opportunities. A dedicated group of local and international women from all backgrounds, beliefs and cultures coordinate the Festival on a voluntary basis throughout the year. We organise fundraising events, coordinate the marketing, designing and advertising of the programme, and aim to pull together community groups, charities and businesses that hold events during the Festival period. The theme for 2012 is ‘Equality and Diversity’ and will include the celebration of International Women’s Day on 8th March with a launch event at the Town Hall. Running from Friday 2nd to Monday 12th March 2012, there will be a fantastic variety of events happening in various venues throughout Oxford city and the wider county. The Festival promises an exciting and informative line up of events including exhibitions, workshops, topical talks, performances and social events celebrating women’s achievements in sport, science, film, literature, theatre and more. Application forms to hold an event during the Festival, or to advertise your business or charity in the programme, can be found on our website, or by contacting Anna Hobson. If you would like to volunteer as a fundraiser, organise sponsored events or be part of the planning committee, please contact Anna or Debbie. Also, if you would like to volunteer as a steward during the Festival itself, or have any specialist skills that may be of benefit in media and publicity, photography, project management or marketing, please do get in touch. Due to the financial climate, our funding is sadly a lot less than in previous years so your support is greatly appreciated in whatever capacity. We have Festival t-shirts and books for sale at reasonable prices, and we run several fundraising events leading up to the Festival, so do look out for us and come and get involved. Debbie Hollingsworth, Festival Coordinator: oxfordwomen@gmail.com Anna Hobson, Programme Coordinator: annacreates@yahoo.com Check out our website at www.oxfordwomen.co.uk Find us on Facebook: Oxford International Women’s Festival page Find us on Twitter: @oxintwomensfest The full programme of events will be distributed early 2012 and are free of charge.

Theatre Preview

This breathtaking and lavish Lincoln Center Theater production reinvented Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical. It swept the 2008 Tony Awards, played for two years to sold-out houses on Broadway and was televised across America. With a cast and live orchestra of 50, this international hit landmark production brought to you by the producers of West Side Story and Guys and Dolls arrives at the New Theatre Oxford for four weeks only. Paulo Szot, who has recently emerged as one of the most exciting voices in opera and who won a Tony for his performance as Emile de Becque in the Lincoln Center Theater production of SOUTH PACIFIC, will be recreating the role of the French plantation owner at the New Theatre from Wednesday 21st – Saturday 31st December. He will be sharing the role of Emile with Welsh National Opera star Jason Howard, who takes the role from Tuesday 6th – Tuesday 20th December. Joining them will be Samantha Womack in the role of Nellie Forbush. This marks a return to theatre by Samantha, whose previous credits on stage include Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, and the Donmar production in the West End of Guys and Dolls (as Adelaide). Also starring in the Barbican run of SOUTH PACIFIC will be Daniel Koek (following his acclaimed performance as Tony in the recent hit production of West Side Story) as Lt Joe Cable, Alex Ferns (Nathan Detroit in Donmar’s Guys and Dolls) as Luther Bills and Loretta Ables Sayre reprising her Lincoln Center Tony-nominated performance of Bloody Mary. Metropolitan Opera’s Bartlett Sher’s hailed production was the first Broadway production that the Rodgers & Hammerstein Estate had allowed to be staged since the musical originally opened in 1949, and ran for almost five years. Considered one of the finest musicals ever written, the score includes Some Enchanted Evening, I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair, Bali Ha’i, I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy, Younger than Springtime, Happy Talk and There is Nothin’ Like a Dame. Set on a tropical island during World War II, this is the sweeping romantic story of two couples, threatened by the realities of war and by their own prejudices. Its portrayal of Americans stationed in an unfamiliar culture in wartime remains as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences. Supported by American Airlines, in association with Samoa – The Treasured Islands of the South Pacific. South Pacific is at the New Theatre Oxford for four weeks only this festive season, opening on Tuesday 6th December and running till Saturday 31st December 2011. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased from the New Theatre box office on George Street, by telephone on 0844 871 3020 or by visiting the website at www.atgtickets.com/oxford (phone and internet bookings subject to booking/transaction fee). Shopping Review

Get ready for your Christmas shopping – there is a little something for almost everyone in this lovely shop! The University of Oxford Shop (the only official one!) is located in the centre of Oxford on the High, and already from the window decoration you can see this shop is very different to the average tourist shop. With some new product highlights, this shop really stands out, especially with their emphasis on high quality and locally made products. I came to the shop on a quiet Thursday morning, perfect to have a good look around and admire the great range of products. If you are a tourist, a student, or a local resident, this is the place to shop! All products are of high quality and many of them are locally made, which means that each product has a story to tell, for example the wide range of original pictures from local artists, or the new range of lady’s jewellery, designed by a local artist. The lady’s jewellery especially is a great new highlight because next to the typical jewellery for men for their graduation or other occasions (cuff links or tie pins), there is now a great range for the ladies to wear! Other fabulous Oxford-related items are the Mr Wingate collection of cushions, teatowels and prints featuring the Sheldonian Theatre, the beautiful Fritillary range, including cushions, notebooks and china, and the new Cityscape range of tea towels, mugs, and best-selling bags. The range of clothing can be found in the back room and I have to say, look out for the new and very stylish dodo t-shirts for him and her! After the dodo shirts for kids were so successful, they are now available for all! Of course the typical and very popularOxford t-shirts, hoodies and bags are also available in this shop, including new styles and little Rugby shirts for kids and the very popular Oxonian range. Getting ready for Christmas, the shop offers a great variety of seasonal products. There are Christmas cards with college designs, for example for Trinity, Brasenose, Oriel and St Peter’s, and Christmas decoration and candles with college images. If you are looking for very special Christmas decoration you should have a look at the Alice decoration range and make sure you have the white rabbit on your Christmas tree! If you are looking for presents, you have a great choice of seasonal products, chocolates, and wrapped product packages, or if you are looking for something personal, you can even get a gift basket with the products of your choice. I’ll definitely be back soon for my Christmas shopping! Reviewed by Anne Kamphausen 106 High Street Oxford OX1 2DW Tel: 01865 247414 Web: www.oushop.com

Restaurant Review

Café Coco Royal, just around the corner from Park End Street, brings the Mediterranean to you and is definitely worth a visit! Unfortunately, our visit there was not on one of the famous burlesque dancing nights (every last Saturday in the month), but we still enjoyed every minute of our evening there! We were warmly greeted at the door by manager Hubert who gave us our choice of table. We picked a table between two trees decorated with lights, and started out with drinks, wine for me, and Spanish beer for my guest, and very delicious olives. We sat and admired the stylish decoration of the restaurant that creates a really cosy atmosphere, while the arrangement of the tables still leaves enough space for privacy. Looking at the menu we decided, that it is truly Mediterranean! There is a good selection of dishes available, with Moroccan, Spanish, Italian, and Greek influence. To start I opted for the garlic bread and houmous, while my guest had the garlic bread with chorizo, mozzarella and chillies. Picking the mains was a hard choice. We wanted to try different things (there is a section with pizzas and one with dishes from the oven, salads, and pasta), but we both ended up ordering pizza – they just sounded too good! The starters were delicious, but it got even better when the pizzas arrived. I had a rather classic choice with chorizo, olives and chillies, while my guest had a very special pizza called merguez & tzatziki. Both were wonderful and really tasty! The restaurant is also open for breakfast (and I have heard it’s wonderful!), and they also offer a set lunch menu from £10, or you can try the deli shop between 10 am and 2 pm, which is part of Café Coco and just next door. Hubert pointed out the great value lunch dishes they offer: soup of the day, salads, and other hot meals, to take away, or eat in the nicely decorated shop. If you are just looking to go for a drink, this place will still provide you with a good selection of wines, great cocktails, and a Mediterranean choice of beers to be enjoyed in this relaxing atmosphere. If you like the Café Coco style, you can share the experience with friends and make group bookings for up to 70, or book the restaurant for a private function (70 or more people). Altogether, we had a fabulous evening and we’ll definitely be back – for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks!
