This breathtaking and lavish Lincoln Center Theater production reinvented Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical. It swept the 2008 Tony Awards, played for two years to sold-out houses on Broadway and was televised across America. With a cast and live orchestra of 50, this international hit landmark production brought to you by the producers of West Side Story and Guys and Dolls arrives at the New Theatre Oxford for four weeks only. Paulo Szot, who has recently emerged as one of the most exciting voices in opera and who won a Tony for his performance as Emile de Becque in the Lincoln Center Theater production of SOUTH PACIFIC, will be recreating the role of the French plantation owner at the New Theatre from Wednesday 21st – Saturday 31st December. He will be sharing the role of Emile with Welsh National Opera star Jason Howard, who takes the role from Tuesday 6th – Tuesday 20th December. Joining them will be Samantha Womack in the role of Nellie Forbush. This marks a return to theatre by Samantha, whose previous credits on stage include Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, and the Donmar production in the West End of Guys and Dolls (as Adelaide). Also starring in the Barbican run of SOUTH PACIFIC will be Daniel Koek (following his acclaimed performance as Tony in the recent hit production of West Side Story) as Lt Joe Cable, Alex Ferns (Nathan Detroit in Donmar’s Guys and Dolls) as Luther Bills and Loretta Ables Sayre reprising her Lincoln Center Tony-nominated performance of Bloody Mary. Get ready for your Christmas shopping – there is a little something for almost everyone in this lovely shop! The University of Oxford Shop (the only official one!) is located in the centre of Oxford on the High, and already from the window decoration you can see this shop is very different to the average tourist shop. With some new product highlights, this shop really stands out, especially with their emphasis on high quality and locally made products. I came to the shop on a quiet Thursday morning, perfect to have a good look around and admire the great range of products. If you are a tourist, a student, or a local resident, this is the place to shop! All products are of high quality and many of them are locally made, which means that each product has a story to tell, for example the wide range of original pictures from local artists, or the new range of lady’s jewellery, designed by a local artist. The lady’s jewellery especially is a great new highlight because next to the typical jewellery for men for their graduation or other occasions (cuff links or tie pins), there is now a great range for the ladies to wear! Other fabulous Oxford-related items are the Mr Wingate collection of cushions, teatowels and prints featuring the Sheldonian Theatre, the beautiful Fritillary range, including cushions, notebooks and china, and the new Cityscape range of tea towels, mugs, and best-selling bags. The range of clothing can be found in the back room and I have to say, look out for the new and very stylish dodo t-shirts for him and her! After the dodo shirts for kids were so successful, they are now available for all! Café Coco Royal, just around the corner from Park End Street, brings the Mediterranean to you and is definitely worth a visit! Unfortunately, our visit there was not on one of the famous burlesque dancing nights (every last Saturday in the month), but we still enjoyed every minute of our evening there! We were warmly greeted at the door by manager Hubert who gave us our choice of table. We picked a table between two trees decorated with lights, and started out with drinks, wine for me, and Spanish beer for my guest, and very delicious olives. We sat and admired the stylish decoration of the restaurant that creates a really cosy atmosphere, while the arrangement of the tables still leaves enough space for privacy. Looking at the menu we decided, that it is truly Mediterranean! There is a good selection of dishes available, with Moroccan, Spanish, Italian, and Greek influence. To start I opted for the garlic bread and houmous, while my guest had the garlic bread with chorizo, mozzarella and chillies. Picking the mains was a hard choice. We wanted to try different things (there is a section with pizzas and one with dishes from the oven, salads, and pasta), but we both ended up ordering pizza – they just sounded too good! The starters were delicious, but it got even better when the pizzas arrived. I had a rather classic choice with chorizo, olives and chillies, while my guest had a very special pizza called merguez & tzatziki. Both were wonderful and really tasty! The restaurant is also open for breakfast (and I have heard it’s wonderful!), and they also offer a set lunch menu from £10, or you can try the deli shop between 10 am and 2 pm, which is part of Café Coco and just next door. Hubert pointed out the great value lunch dishes they offer: soup of the day, salads, and other hot meals, to take away, or eat in the nicely decorated shop. If you are just looking to go for a drink, this place will still provide you with a good selection of wines, great cocktails, and a Mediterranean choice of beers to be enjoyed in this relaxing atmosphere. If you like the Café Coco style, you can share the experience with friends and make group bookings for up to 70, or book the restaurant for a private function (70 or more people). Altogether, we had a fabulous evening and we’ll definitely be back – for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks!
