January Welcome to 2012! Happy New Year! Welcome to your first edition of 2012 and what a healthy issue we have for you. Paige has been busy doing Zumba and Yoga - see reviews in this issue - and she’s even got me doing some boxing. All great fun! This is a historic year for many of us for lots of reasons. The Olympics will soon be with us, Euro Championships, our preferred charity, Oxfam, is 70 this year and our VOUCH scheme is up and running with, fingers crossed, our new VOUCH website up and running before long. As you may already know, we’ve hit quite a milestone ourselves. Our next edition will signal our 10th Birthday, so an early ‘thank you’ to all of our advertisers and readers for supporting us for the past 10 years. We will be celebrating at The Ashmolean on 26th January with all of our customers - if you’re a customer and haven’t had your invite, please call me now. Enjoy the magazine. Lead Article

In the middle of the buzzing area of Cowley Road, you will find Malikas, which guarantees a superior Indian cuisine experience! The restaurant has just been refurbished and the new looks are very modern. There are seats for 70, which is an extension to the space before the refurbishment, but still the atmosphere is cozy and relaxing. We received a very warm and friendly welcome and our table was ready for us when we arrived. Of course, we started out with poppadoms, which dipped in the chutneys and sauces were already a delicious experience – and we could not resist asking for a second portion! We shared a good bottle of house wine to accompany our tasty intro to Malikas. We were so occupied with the poppadoms that we almost forgot to order, but when we did, not being curry aficionados, we got great advice from our waiter, who was very patient, explaining the differences of the many different dishes to us. Based on this knowledgeable advice, my guest, who normally always stays on the safe side by ordering a chicken Korma, even went for something new. I had chicken Rogan, which I was advised would suit me. The chef added extra tomato to cater to my liking, as they believe each customer deserves a curry special to them. As a side, we ordered Sag paneer, which is a mix of spinach and cheese and also Sag Aloo spinach and potatoes. We happily continued with our poppadoms until the mains arrived, and, God, were they good! Beautifully presented in artistic formed bowls, it was the most enjoyable eating experience! In the end, we were too full for any desserts, but while we finished our drinks, Mohammed, the owner, told us a few more details about the restaurant. He explained to us that Malikas is more than just an average restaurant; most guests are returning customers (even after the refurbishment), which is not surprising, as his chef came 3rd in the UK Best Indian Chef competition in 2011. Mohammed, a kindhearted chap, also sponsors the Oxford Brookes Cricket Team, which we were fortunate enough to meet, as they were eating there on the same night. Future plans include, for example, charity nights to be held at Malikas. For those who work nearby, express lunches are now also available for just £6.95. You will get a choice of a wide selection of mouth watering dishes with the option of rice or naan and a then to finish it off you get a complimentary drink. How about taking a trip down to Malikas on a Sunday? The restaurant now offers an all you can eat buffet for just for £8.95. The buffet includes all most common curry dishes, vegetables, naans and rice, but some dishes change every week, so there is always something new to discover. There are even home made desserts on the menu, so why not get rid of the traditional Sunday Lunch and try something new this Sunday…… We found out that with great service and wonderful food, this restaurant really stands out in Oxford’s long list of Indian restaurants. Health & Leisure Review

The advert claimed that I would 'enhance my boxing skills'. Really? 'What's there to enhance?' I thought. My speed would be developed, apparently, as would my reflexes and agility. All very nice. 'Increase your stamina', 'help weight loss & tone up', 'boost your confidence'. And, according to the ad, 'it would be 'FUN'?! Seriously? BUT THERE WAS NO MENTION OF THE SEMI-PROFESSIONAL BLOKE WITH THE FIRE EMBLAZONED BOXING GLOVES WHO NEARLY PUNCHED MY LIGHTS OUT, WAS THERE???? WHERE WAS THAT BIT IN THE ADVERT? I trundled off to Matthew Arnold school one Monday evening after work, wrapped up to shield me from the wind and rain, partly looking forward to venting some frustration but certainly more worried about what was to come. There were approximately 30 of us gathered in the school gym, ages ranging from 25 to 50. It was like a school reunion for the classes of 1985 to 1960, with boxing gloves on! Adam Tarnet, TLA Fitness’s Boxercise Personal Trainer, was on hand to put us through our paces. A gentle jog around the gym, some stretching exercises and then we were in to the first routine, solo shadow boxing. But then soon after, ‘Grab a partner’. Shouted Adam. ‘Ok mate?’ Said one of the other ‘boxers’. Which seemed to be the abbreviation for ‘would you like me to partner you, make you look more ridiculous than you already do in those shiny shorts which were fashionable during the 1982 World Cup, and, for good measure, throw the odd punch in your face with my gloves of fire?’ ‘Oh, er, um, go on then.’ What followed was a bit of a blur. Jab, punch, hook, DUCK! I added a few of my own moves, like wince, hide behind gloves and trip over my shoelaces. The gloves of fire ‘a present’ allegedly, were coming at me from all angles. Two gloves became four, which became eight. It was pacy and hard to keep up. BUT, the more we did, the more I enjoyed. Even sit-ups with some punching thrown in, sprints, no less, with punching at the end, but no skipping, yet! And the time? It flew! Isn’t that a good sign we’d enjoyed ourselves? I couldn’t quite believe it. Drenched in honest sweat. Humiliated maybe, but feeling on top of the world, certainly. This is a class to invigorate. A class to jumpstart your reflexes and certainly keep you on your toes. Give it a go. Just leave the shiny shorts at home, but do take some shorts, obviously, otherwise that WOULD be silly. Your first session is free. 10 sessions = £80.00 or alternatively join the TLA membership for a discounted rate see www.tlafitness.com for more details. Minimum age is 14 and 14 to 15 year olds must be accompanied by an adult. By Richard Rosser www.tlafitness.com Tel: 07554 400 401 Various venues around Oxford. Boxercise, Mondays, Matthew Arnold School, Cumnor Hill, 7pm to 8pm.

Health & Leisure Review

YogaVenue is located at 2 Avenue Road Oxford Cowley and owned by Alessandro and Caroline, local Oxford residents. YogaVenue is a new dedicated Yoga studio which offers different styles of Yoga including Hot Yoga. Hot Yoga is a new form of Yoga which is becoming extremely popular, and as I was later told by Alessandro, Hot Yoga suits those who particularly have problems with their legs and back as it helps to build strength and flexibility, but especially the muscles around the knee. This was my lucky day as that is exactly what I need..... Arriving I didn’t really know what to expect. I had participated in Yoga a couple of times before, nevertheless Hot Yoga was a completely new concept to me. Walking through the doors I was greeted by my smiling teacher who was very happy to answer all of my questions. She explained that Hot Yoga is a series of Hatha Yoga postures and breathing exercises carried out in a room heated to 40 degrees C. The YogaVenue studio is great; it has two studios and the interior is elegantly styled portraying a calm and serene atmosphere. You can see that Alessandro and Caroline have spent a great amount of time in providing the highest quality facilities they possibly can for their clients. I was handed a towel and mat which are available for hire (the mats are cleaned after each class!) and was shown to the Hot studio where it was suggested I take a few minutes before class in order for my body to get used to the heat. Apparently it can be quite common in your first couple of sessions to feel slightly dizzy. This is due to the high temperatures, however, once your body adapts to the heat, you feel amazing. Once everyone one was in the studio the class began. The teacher talks you through the postures during the 90 minute session. Regular students are generally in the front row so the less experienced students can get visual cues alongside the dialogue. Our teacher was very calm and talked us all through each of the postures step by step, also offering help to those who needed it. I must admit this was a lot harder than I had first anticipated, yet extremely satisfying – I can now definitely see why people become addicted to this type of yoga. Especially with the high quality teachers and the first class facilities, who wouldn’t want to keep visiting YogaVenue? The classes take place throughout the day, the earliest at 9.30am and the latest at 7.30pm during the week. All Hot Yoga classes last 90 minutes. YogaVenue also teaches Vinyasa Yoga. The Vinyasa studio downstairs is also very peaceful and has a beautiful brick wall at one end of the room. Here YogaVenue offers Vinyasa classes (a flowing style of Hatha Yoga) everyday of the week. Vinyasa classes are 90 or 60 minutes. You know what this means don’t you - there's no excuse not to go after work!!! So go grab a couple of towels and prepare to sweat!!! Health & Leisure Review

It was 7.00pm and here I was arriving in Littlemore where I was going to be trying something very new to me – Zumba…. Although being very keen on keeping fit, this was something I had yet to experience. Walking into the hall, I immediately saw just how popular Zumba really was with around 20 people; all of different ages, heights and sizes. We had 10 minutes before we started and they were already eager to get going; now I was excited!!! Tamara, the fitness trainer and owner of Zumba and True Balance and Beauty, introduced herself to me. Whilst waiting for everyone to arrive, she explained to me why she is so passionate about her work. At a very young age, Tamara suffered a crush fracture to her lower vertebrae, which led to a metal plate being inserted into her hip destroying her dream of dancing. In 2004 however, this plate was removed and Tamara was able to start her journey to recovery, believing this could be her chance to dance again. She then went on to receive holistic treatments where she undertook various treatments to rebuild what she thought she had nearly lost. Due to these treatments Tamara has now opened True Balance and Beauty where she offers a wide range of chronic muscle and tissue treatments. For further information please visit www.truebalance.biz. I hadn’t even started the session and I was already overwhelmed, but not by the workout, but by this inspiring woman. When the session started it became immediately apparent I had no reason to panic about my lack of training. Everyone in there was of different abilities and many like me, who were yet to pick up the steps. I was particularly a fan of the music, it was upbeat and I was able to sing along throughout the session, which if you ask me, is always a great way to keep your mind off what you are really doing. What really impressed me was the relationship Tamara had with all my Zumba buddies; there was not a second where Tamara wasn’t either giving direction or encouragement. Before I knew it, the end of the session was upon us and I must admit I had been given a fantastic workout. Although everyone was dripping in sweat and out of breath, looking around the room, one thing was very clear to see .....that everyone still had a smile on their faces. Once the session had finished I was pleasantly surprised just how thoroughly I had enjoyed the session and I will definitely be going again!! Zumba has given me a lot more mobility in my joints especially my hips, improved my rhythm, confidence and feel good factor that I get at the end of each class having had the class sing, cheer, clap, laugh and smile. So all those looking to get out and about, visit Dominic Barberi Hall. By Paige Walford Web: www.zumba-oxford.co.uk Tel: 07739 309422 Email: info@zumba-oxford.co.uk

Restaurant Review

Oxy Oriental located next to the Kassam Stadium is somewhere I have been told repeatedly to try, due to its spectacular reputation for phenomenal food; and finally, tonight was to be the night where I ventured into this highly popular restaurant and tasted it for myself. But would it be as good as I expected?? Yes, is the answer! Upon arrival, a friendly face greeted me at the entrance and escorted my guest and I to our table. We arrived very early due to our excitement. Although we were there at a time that we would have thought as being quiet, there was still a huge number of tables taken up, creating a buzzing atmosphere throughout the restaurant. As you approach the buffet area, you are greeted with a beautifully presented oriental spread ranging from Sushi, and other traditional dishes together with a wide selection of Teppan-Yaki dishes for which you get to choose the raw ingredients and the chef cooks it before you in a flash – literally! The Oxy Oriental Buffet/Banquet offers a wide range of scrumptious delicacies from which you can refill your plate to your heart’s content. The polite and courteous staff are well informed about the menu and are always on hand to talk you through the variety of dishes that they have available. Lau, the manager, was particularly encouraging when it came to recommending the different dishes, my favourite dish however, was the sweet and sour chicken but my guest just could not get enough of the duck pancakes.....a popular favourite for most, it appeared, on the night. Like many buffets, many of us assume the food is going to be cold and far from fresh. However, not at Oxy Oriental. The dishes are constantly being replenished to meet demand, so it’s always hot and, more importantly, fresh. This certainly tells in the mouth wateringly beautiful food. In case you still have room (many people don’t) to polish off some dessert, then you may have a difficult choice as they have a huge variety to get your teeth stuck into ranging from traditional puddings to the delectable soft ice creams to keep the kids happy. The Oxy Oriental also boasts a wide selection of drinks to complement all palettes and tastes. If you’re in a hurry, why not try Oxy’s fast and efficient take away service? To top it all, the Loyalty Cards with various discounts keep you coming back for more. Located just three miles from the City Centre, the free parking makes this the perfect venue in many ways. A quick buffet lunch costs £6.10 and £7.10 on a Sunday and an evening meal with friends is £12.95 or £13.95 on Friday and Saturday, and large party bookings are taken for up to 180. Altogether, Oxy Oriental definitely lived up to my expectations, so if you fancy fantastic service and sensational food why not make a visit? I can’t wait to plan my next trip!
