Witney Feature in Witney Join In Oxford's Paige Walford as she embarks on a quest to find the best Witney has to offer in 24 Hours
Witney, steeped in history, welcomes you to experience the old and the new, intertwined in a unique and enchanting setting. I was going to be spending 24 hours in the heart of Witney, seeing exactly what it had to offer. One thing I noticed immediately was all of the parking is free, so you really can enjoy the area for as long as you like.... and not worry about the parking fees! I was staying at The Blue Boar, a newly refurbished hotel which has already developed a name for itself. The week before my night stay, Katie Price had even stayed there so I knew there must be something very special about this place. The hotel was both beautifully designed from the exterior and the interior was certainly something to be desired, with a modern decor this Hotel and restaurant really does stand out from the crowd.
“I was fortunate enough to speak to a local who had fantastic knowledge of the area who explained the true history of the town.”
We checked into our room and then decided to take a walk through Witney city centre, where you see the history unravel. I was fortunate enough to speak to a local who had fantastic knowledge of the area who explained the true history of the town. For those history fans out there the Civil War was the point at which this town really began to prosper. I thought I would take a little extra time and go beyond the central area, the Market Square. I then wandered the full length of the High Street, Bridge Street and Corn Street. We had dinner at The Blue Boar (check out The Blue Boar review) – all that needs to be said is “WOW”...this is definitely somewhere you must all try. After dinner we took the opportunity to try out the Witney nightlife.

I had been looking forward to visiting a number of the pubs we had walked past during the day and they all seemed really busy. Our first stop was The Fleece, a smart town pub, popular for its wide choice of good food, friendly and attentive service and its Greene King Ales. This was very much a local’s pub, however, still an inviting one to visitors. After a couple of drinks here we decided we would go for something a little bit different. Zizis was our next stop, a contemporary bar with a variety of wines to suit all. For beer lovers there is most certainly a label to suit you. After an hour we decided it was time to call it a night as tomorrow was going to be a long day. I woke up in the morning ready for my day of shopping, that’s right a girls idea of heaven....walking out onto the streets you can see a wide variety of shops ranging from fashion and specialist clothing retailers, accessory outlets, health and beauty shops, restaurants and cafes, crafts, toys, games and gift shops. I must admit, however, one of my personal favourite shops was W.R Harvey and Co Antiques, a shop full of fine antique furniture and works of art, something completely different to what you would find on City Centre High Streets. After hours browsing through the shops, we had worked up quite an appetite, and decided on a pub lunch at The Red Lion. Seeing as it was a Saturday we hoped there would be a buzzing atmosphere and homely food. We were right; it was a great lunch in a welcoming pub . After this we thought we would have a

stroll over to the newer side of Witney, to Marriott’s walk. Although not the biggest of shopping centres, you still find the more popular stores such a Debenhams, Monsoon, Fat Face and then restaurants such as Café Rouge and Frankie and Benny’s. To finish my day off I took a trip to Cineworld, right next door to Frankie and Bennys. What a great day out you can have here for families, friends, couples or even just for yourself. So, overall, my 24 hours in Witney was very enjoyable, so why not take a trip there for yourself. Whether you are looking to explore the quality shops, or if you are looking for an evening meal, or even to catch a film, I am sure whatever it is you are looking for, Witney will certainly have plenty to offer you!!! Simply Beautiful Richard Rosser meets with the enigmatic Chris Clinkard, owner of the Beautiful Group and does his best to keep up with this fast thinking, rapidly growing and diverse group of companies who all have one thing in common – a deep passion to provide a flawless services to their customers. Firstly, Chris is giving In Oxford readers an overview of the group. “We have three brands in The Beautiful Group, brands which we have built after a lot of blood, sweat and tears and a few ‘business scars’ – Beautiful Creases, Beautiful Linen and Beautiful Chairs. Having established each business we are now embarking on an expansion for all three.” Beautiful Creases provides a full laundry service, from collection, washing, drying, pressing and delivery back to your door. Beautiful Linen provides a wide range of, predominantly, commercial clients with a huge stock of linen to choose from. Beautiful Chair Covers is, essentially, venue styling. Anything from chair covers to table decorations, spectacular flower arrangements to napkins. “We are trying really hard to get across to customers that we are a family, local, award winning business but we have equally recognised that we have had to raise our game and continue to provide a superior service across all of the businesses which we operate.” As previously mentioned, the customer base served by The Beautiful Group is diverse, particularly with Beautiful Creases as Chris explains. “The demographic is very diverse, from large country houses to the single guy that’s working in Oxford and hasn’t got the time to do his own laundry. We do something very different to many other organisations – all of customer clothing is washed individually, which is our unique selling point. This ensures that your washing is not mixed and, more importantly, your washing isn’t lost! Our clients know that their clothes will come back safe. We operate a track and trace system like nothing else I’ve seen – it’s bespoke laundry, essentially. “Some customers just use us for suits, others will ask us to do everything, from shirts and underwear to suits and bedding. We will send back your laundry just how you want it – on hangers, folded, buttons done up, whatever you want. “Most people use us fortnightly but our aim is to push average spending up and as we are all getting busier and busier, services such as ours will become increasingly in demand. The average laundry bill for a family of four, with everything included, collected and dropped off, is £350 per month. You compare that to the time invested, the physiological aspect of huge piles of laundry, time spent ironing, not to mention the washing powder. Now that’s everything, hundreds of items gone from your chores list! That’s why we are getting lots of new faces coming through the door, knowing that whether it’s just shirts or bedding we are doing, it’s lightening the load and, let’s face it, we call all do with some of that!” www.hire-chair-covers.co.uk

Witney Feature Article
As soon as we arrived in Witney we were instantaneously hit by the beauty of the small town, which is steeped in history and character. Tonight I was going to be staying at the newly refurbished Blue Boar, the talk of the town at this moment in time it appears. A warm greeting awaited us on our arrival by one of the reception team. We were greeted with a friendly smiling attitude throughout our stay. Our room for the night was beautifully decorated, and presented to us with a perfect home-away-from-home feel. The décor was in keeping with the feel of the rest of the hotel, a modern style with an exquisite bathroom. There’s even an I Pod docking station in each of the rooms, so no more music channels whilst getting ready girls!! We felt we could relax in our room and recharge the batteries after a long week. We debated over pre-drinks but we couldn’t hold out on the food any longer, it all smelt too good. We were seated by an attentive member of staff, who was more than happy to point out all of the recommended dishes. Both my guest and I spent quite some time browsing the menu as everything sounded so delicious. We were taking quite a while to order and in the meantime we were given some olives and a selection of breads - perfect to accompany our wine. After this large selection of breads and olives we decided to go straight into our mains. My guest chose the pork, smothered in apple sauce with a side of butternut squash. I went with the Lamb served with Potato purée and cabbage covered in a Rosemary sauce. The flavours were just superb, the lamb was perfectly cooked and, too add a bit more flavour, a side of mint sauce was offered, with or without the mint sauce - it was fantastic. I was even cheeky enough to have a mouthful of my guest’s dinner, which was equally divine. To follow our scrumptious main courses we chose a selection of desserts (greedy I know), Cheesecake, lightly covered in a blueberry sauce, Chocolate fudge cake and Sticky toffee pudding served with homemade ice cream. The presentation was beautiful, with everything being taken into account, colour and most importantly flavour. They all looked so incredible, it was very difficult to decide which one to eat first …. or should I say finish first! After our meal, seeing as we were having such a beautiful evening we decided to continue our night in the bar. This area is perfect, whether you’re after just a quiet drink after work, a girl’s night out or even just for drinks with work colleagues. All of the Bar staff are more than pleased to help and offer suggestions when it comes to ordering. The Blue Boar is certainly a very special hotel which I would highly recommend. Witney Feature Article
The Wychwood Brewery is tucked away behind the main street of the market town of Witney, in the heart of the Oxfordshire Cotswold’s. Brewing in Witney dates back to 1811 and Wychwood Brewery is sited at the old Eagle Maltings, built more than 150 years ago when barley was malted for the town’s brewery. Witney sits on the fringes of an ancient medieval forest, The Wych Wood, and the founders of Wychwood Brewery, as well as being passionate about beer, were aware of the legends of the Wychwood Forest and decided to name the brewery after the ancient wood. Wychwood Brewery is home to the legendary Hobgoblin strong dark beer and today brews more than 60,000 barrels of high quality traditional ale each year. The beers are now exported in ever increasing quantities all over the world including USA, Canada, Russia, Sweden, Japan and Israel. The brewery blends a mixture of old traditions and new innovations. The beers contain water from the River Windrush, English hops and yeast. No additives are used. Following the closure of Brakspear Brewery in Henley on Thames in 2002, Wychwood were committed to bringing the brewing of Brakspear beers back to Oxfordshire. After undergoing a £1 million redevelopment the Wychwood Brewery site now incorporates a separate Brakspear brewhouse and fermenting room. Much of the original equipment from Henley has been used, including the famous ‘double drop’ fermenting system, used to brew Brakspear beers since 1774. Brakspear beers are brewed alongside Wychwood beers and are still supplied weekly to the Brakspear Pubs. To show you where the magic happens, the brewery offers tours every Saturday and Sunday afternoon throughout the year. Tours cost £7.50 and includes a tour, beer sampling and a complimentary souvenir Wychwood glass. The full tour experience lasts approximately two hours and will take you through the brewing process of Wychwood and Brakspear beers. After the tour you are invited to sample our flagship Hobgoblin along with a range of Wychwood and Brakspear bottled beers. All of which are available to purchase from the brewery store. The tours are extremely popular so pre-booking is essential. To check availability, or to make a booking on-line, please visit www.wychwood.co.uk alternatively call during office hours on 01993 890800. If you don’t have time for a tour why not visit the brewery store? In addition to takeaway cask and bottled beer the store sells a range of clothing and merchandise. The store is open Monday to Saturday, 10.00am to 5.00pm (Excl. public holidays). Eagle Maltings The Crofts Witney Oxon OX28 4DP Tel: 0199389 0800 Web: www.wychwood.co.uk

Artist Peter McLeish started investigating these phenomena for his work, but has now become interested in the physics behind these weird displays. Ages: 13+ Time: 7.30pm FORTHCOMING EVENT

“A Museum for today’s global world. To travel through its galleries is to be handed a roundthe-world ticket on a tour of history.” The Times, October 2009 Since its reopening in 2009, the Ashmolean’s exhibitions programme has received critical and public acclaim. Local and national companies are keen to be associated with the Museum through exhibition sponsorship and by joining the Ashmolean Corporate Membership scheme – opportunities which bring a host of benefits. In consultation with clients, the Ashmolean can produce a range of sponsorship packages tailored to work for different organisations and a variety of budgets. We would be delighted to talk to you about how exhibition sponsorship could work for your company. Recent exhibitions which have provided opportunities for corporate sponsorship and Membership have included Visions of Mughal India: The Collection of Howard Hodgkin. Running until 22 April, this exhibition shows the outstanding private collection of Indian paintings of the artist Howard Hodgkin Long considered one of the finest collections of its kind in the world, it comprises most of the main types of Indian court painting that flourished during the Mughal period (c. 1550–1850), including the refined naturalistic works of the imperial Mughal court; the poetic and subtly coloured paintings of the Deccani Sultanates; and the boldly drawn and vibrantly coloured styles of the Rajput kingdoms of Rajasthan and the Punjab Hills. Highlights include illustrations of epics and myths; royal portraits; and many scenes of court life or hunting. There is a large and outstanding group of elephant portraits and studies from the Mughal and Kota schools. Some of the works in the collection vividly evoke the urban or daily life of India, a country which has inspired Hodgkin on his frequent visits made over some 50 years. Above all, this is a personal collection, formed by an artist’s eye, where artistic quality has always mattered most. All Hodgkin’s Indian pictures are of an unusual or exceptional quality. The collection is on show at the Ashmolean for the first time in its entirety, and many works have never been exhibited to the public before. Visions of Mughal India is supported by CHK Charities Ltd and the accompanying exhibition events programme has been supported by the Nehru Centre. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos. Perseus embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, who has been targeted for capture by his traitorous son, Ares, and his brother, Hades.
The Hunger Games Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Restaurant Review
Quod boasts a large bar, a stunning terrace and a rare city centre car park to the rear, and represents in many ways the very best of what Oxford has to offer. Centrally located between University Colleges, with students, tourists and local professionals passing by its huge glass frontage, Quod is lively, stylish and great for a meal for two or a night out with a group of friends. I have always been charmed by the buzz of Quod, but I was genuinely taken aback when I visited with my wife recently. I was mesmerised by the quality of the food, the service and the whole dining experience. I chose the simple but effective chicory and blood orange salad to start, whilst Georgina plumped for the Jersey crab. Following a fish theme, Georgina went with the salmon fishcakes with spinach and sorrel sauce, whilst I couldn’t resist the 8oz rib steak with chips and béarnaise. Joe, who served us, was punchy, bright and articulate. He had the knowledge and the confidence to make suggestions, genuine suggestions, not recommendations which would put a few extra quid on the bill. He made us both feel very comfortable. Whilst Georgina stayed true to her glass of champagne, Joe’s recommendation of a glass of Rioja Crianza complemented my steak perfectly. We even managed to share a Prune and Armagnac tart. When I say share, there were two spoons – maybe so I didn’t feel quite so guilty! Converted from a banking hall by owner Jeremy Mogford over twelve years ago, Quod, its popular private dining rooms and the Old Bank Hotel house an amazing collection of twentieth century British art. Aberdeen Angus, lamb and pork are supplied by the owner’s Oxfordshire farm and fish is flown in twice weekly from Jersey. Quod is open for breakfast from 7am, serves a two course set lunch menu for £12.95 Monday to Friday from midday until 7pm, tea in the afternoon and a Sunday roast every week. The bar serves coffee and cocktails and has an impressive wine list with imaginative bar snacks. Try and catch the Jazz every Sunday evening 5 – 7pm. Quod is inspired, it is fun, but it is also a great dining experience. You can’t honestly ask for much more.
