Lead Article

One might associate dining in Oxford with the staid culinary offerings of college dining halls. But away from the gown, and even the town, a hinterland of interesting eateries has emerged. Insiders have long known The Perch in Binsey to be a little gem. A mere twenty-minute stroll along the meandering Isis river brings one away from the centre to a hidden world of thatched cottages, well-removed from the throng of bright-eyed students and camera-touting tourists. Under French management now and with a French head chef, this establishment is attempting to compliment its undoubted charm with quite ambitious cooking. An enticing open fire and luxuriant leather coach greeted our arrival, while that stalwart of any rural pub, the large, dopey dog, lurched beside the bar. Elegant menus were presented and, with a variety of alluring choices, we confronted the dilemma of what to order. The wine list is short but eclectic and, in a welcome development, beverages are paired with dishes. Obviously restaurants should avoid being prescriptive about this, but I find it encouraging that chef and sommelier have taken the time to work out interesting combinations and are communicating their conclusions to the customer. As an aperitif, I chose a glass of dulcet Moscato paired with the gravlax starter, making that decision quite straightforward. For my main I persisted with the fishy theme, ordering Cornish scallops which I have trouble resisting. With Coquilles St Jacques in the hands of a Frenchman I expected satisfaction. The gravlax dish was a splendid arrangement, lustrous pickled cucumber and beetroot providing a lush accompaniment to the coiled salmon that I charmed towards my expectant gullet with the whirling motion of a fork; while the horseradish cream gave the ensemble a hearty balance and the wine was indeed well matched. My dining companion seemed to enjoy her pan-fried foie gras and roasted pigeon breast, but for all its elegance, I was thoroughly absorbed by my own dish. After a judicious break the mains arrived and while visually my choice did not arrest to the extent of the starter, it proved enjoyable, the braised chicory and Noilly sauce combining with the mussels, chorizo and scallops to good effect. My companion meanwhile was presented with an elegant medley of pork belly, sausage and sauerkraut: the effect overall was Alsatian, with an architectural arrangement faintly reminiscent of the glorious city of Colmar. Its splendour was, however, soon laid low with gusto – the inevitable fate of comestible ephemera, alas. Now almost replete, I chose the Café Gourmand de Chef which provided an assortment of profiteroles and mousses of an intoxicating blend that lived up to the billing which our helpful waiter had given. Ideal preparation for the walk back to the centre. With mains under the £20 mark, and most starters offered for less than half that, The Perch offers fine dining at prices that don’t make you flinch. When a man from the wrong side of the tracks is falsely accused of murder, he is forced to go on the run with a beautiful hostage.

Machine Gun Preacher When ex-biker-gang member Sam Childers makes the life-changing decision to go to East Africa, he is outraged by the unspeakable horrors faced by the region's vulnerable children. Shopping Review

A visit at Modern Art Oxford is a very different art experience. Next to rather insignificant buildings like Westgate Centre, there is a unique building structure, which has once been a brewery. It is now converted into a distinctive gallery with shop, café & bar with a modern vibe, but they still brew their own beer now to keep the tradition. We were greeted in the great wooden entrance hall by the first piece of art by Abraham Cruzvillegas, whose exhibition is currently on display. A sculpture constructed from a tricycle with a sound system that plays recordings of the artist’s interpretations of various songs, was a taster to the complete exhibition in the upper gallery. It took us a while to realise where the happy whistling came from! Once in the shop, we didn’t know where to look first. So many beautiful pieces! We decided to sit down in the café first with a glass of wine and Hayley, the Events Manager, came over for a chat about the shop and their products before taking a tour around the building. The Modern Art Oxford shop stocks a unique range of books, publications and art journals on contemporary art and culture, as well as a hand selected range of design led products, limited edition prints, jewellery, Lomo cameras and gifts. The range is constantly changing to reflect the current season trends and the Gallery programme. They also have a wide range of design led gifts including Jo Gordon’s new collection of scarves and berets, Corrie Williamson wooden jewellery, o’clock interchangeable rubber watches and a Jansen + Co range of primary coloured teapots, cake pedestals and mugs, a children’s corner with art sets for kids, stationery and books, and – quite new to the shop - copper and brass jewellery by Laura Lombardi. So if you don’t know where to start with your Christmas shopping, this is the place to go! One range of products that really caught our eye was the popular Plumen lights with their unique chords and various bulb sizes to choose from, and you can see examples in the café that are an inspiration for the many, many ways of how to arrange these lights in your home. Modern Art Oxford is a venue for all, appealing to those of all ages and tastes and it’s really worth visiting to browse in the shop, admire the building and the exhibitions or enjoy a drink in the café. Restaurant Review

“George Street is the perfect location for what we intend will be a regular pit stop for anyone who enjoys brilliant, simple, rustic Italian food and a relaxed environment.” Jamie Oliver. Side-stepping a queue is something which either fulfills or embarrasses. But when it’s a queue which has seemed impenetrable for almost two years, the embarrassment levels soar! But what the heck, we were in and, Wow!, what a place. No wonder they’re queuing around the block. And all around us, people were enjoying themselves….heartily. To one side there was a group of eight women, maybe celebrating, who knows, but boy were they having a good time. And to our right, a young family, having fun with their toddler. That epitomizes Jamie’s Italian – a place for everyone, no doubt in line with the most traditional of Italian family restaurants. We tucked in to the “World’s Best Olives On Ice”, together with Jamie’s special black olive tapenade and music bread. We were sorely tempted by the ‘Double Grape and Cucumber Martini’, but maybe another time. I had been primed to order the ‘Seasonal Meat Antipasti Plank’ to start, and together with Abi and Tina, we took two. Resting on an industrial tin of plum tomatoes, the plank consisted of a selection of cured meats, cheeses, pickles and Italian coleslaw. Two planks between three were ample, but this is a big starter which ticks all of the boxes. Eddie got stuck in to the Italian Nachos which were seen off without fuss. Despite her tender years, Abi is a sucker for steak, and Jamie’s ‘Flash Steak’ proved too tempting for our nine year old to resist. Wafer thin prime British beef steak, pounded with sage and prosciutto, looked a steak too far. But she conquered it and relished every mouthful. “That was delicious!” She muttered as she slumped back in her chair, no doubt seeking respite before dessert. Eddie chose the Spaghetti Bolognese, I went for the ‘Fish In A Bag’, and Tina had the Pig’s Cheeks from the specials board. My main was superb – fresh sea bass fillet which was as close as you will get to eating ‘fish pillows’, just so tasty and incredibly presented. Tina had fun with the kids asking them to guess what she had ordered – neither could guess and Ed had at least three goes tasting Tina’s main. We had to share desserts as three courses at lunchtime is always quite an ask, but we managed a Creamy Pannacotta – well, I did on my own! – a delicious fruit sorbet and an Italian seasonal Bakewell Tart. Ten out of ten – I’m surprised the queue is that short! Reviewed by Richard Rosser Photography by David Loftus 24-26 George Street, Oxford, OX1 2AE Tel: 01865 83 83 83 Web: www.jamiesitalian.com

Restaurant Review

Winner of the Asian category in this year’s Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards, Majiliss, found on Cowley Road, brings a new feel to Indian Cuisine without losing the traditional experience. Ran by four brothers, this modern Indian restaurant provides a calm welcoming environment for all to enjoy. On arrival, I was immediately greeted with a warm smile from Loylu and his fellow staff members. The scent of lilies’ filled the dining room where you cannot help but admire the modern feel that they have brought to the place. Once seated, we were presented with poppadoms which were served with a variety of dips, including mango chutney, cucumber and mint, and spicy tomato. I wasn’t going to complain, as it was the perfect way to start. Freshly cooked starters of vegetable samosas, Shami kebab, and Onion bhaji followed. After the pure quality of the starters, I was anticipating a wonderful main course. I had chosen the Chicken Korma, a coconut based curry, described to me as the “one of a kind curry.” My guest selected a chicken and spinach madras, a curry hot enough to challenge anyone’s taste buds. Alongside this, we had basmati rice, which was perfectly prepared. The portion sizes were also something to be admired - you most certainly won’t be leaving with room to breathe. We washed it all down with Kingfisher, a strong Indian beer. The menu features the finest, freshest ingredients and that definitely shows. With each course, the steaming dishes arrived promptly, with friendly and efficient service. The food comes in generous portions, and can be made as spicy, or non-spicy, as you likeand the extensive menu means there is plenty of choice for meat eaters, fish eaters, and vegetarians alike. Our food, which covered all of these groups, had just the right balance and variety of flavours, and was spicy without being overwhelmingly so. In my opinion, Majliss has brought a new dimension to Cowley Road. The staff open their doors to all members of the public with a smile on their faces. This is most definitely an Indian restaurant that you cannot miss!! Reviewed by Paige Walford 110 Cowley Road Oxford OX4 1JE Tel: 01865 726 728 Web: www.majliss.co.uk

Nightlife Review

I have discovered my new favourite place: Angels tucked away on Little Clarendon Street. You may not have come across this fantastic cocktail bar but it’s about time you did! The interior of the bar is impressive. You walk into another world: there is a huge black and white portrait of Grace Kelly on red walls; the brown leather sofas and the golden lustres create a beautiful décor that makes you feel like you’re having a cocktail where normally only the rich and famous go. The bar is equipped with everything you could possibly dream of and the bar staff will even create a cocktail specifically for you with your favourite flavours. Taste buds tingled already as we poured over the menu, which is extensive to say the least. There are five sections: Vintage, Angels Lab, Classic, Heavenly, and Miscellaneous (wines and spirits). Dominika, the enthusiastic bartender, explained that the Vintage cocktails develop from forgotten recipes, found in old books or stories. Angels Lab includes cocktails that the barkeepers created themselves and are therefore completely new. Wing Time 6, a fruity kiwi and apple mixture, or the bubbly Passionate Champagne are just two examples for the endless creativity of the bartenders that we tried. Bar staff are happy to cater to your every request, even mixing cocktails not on the menu. Non-drinkers are also well catered for. If you are feeling creative, ask for the Bartender Freestyle and the bartender will whip up a non-alcoholic mixture based on any flavours you fancy. The bar also has an extensive downstairs area. Beautifully decorated, with low lighting and an intimate feel, it is the perfect destination for a private party. The downstairs is available to hire out at no cost, merely a minimum spend. Angels Bar welcomes guests with an atmosphere very different from the standard cocktail lounge or bar you may have come across before. I would recommend it for a relaxing yet indulgent cocktail experience. Nestled inside, the friendly ambience can add many hours of pure enjoyment to your evening, and the happy hour prices (available before 9pm) should make visiting Angels a simple decision. Restaurant Review

Verde Cowley Road’s Verde Pizzeria restaurant offers an up to date menu with not only a large range of deliciously different pizzas, but also tasty meat and pasta dishes, without even mentioning the range of starters and desserts. Walking into Verde you cannot help but notice the open kitchen where a team of dedicated chefs are visible to all. Everything is made with the finest fresh ingredients, making sure that you always have a first rate experience with first class food. Walking to sit down it is clear to see that owner Marcello takes a lot of pride in his restaurant and you can see this from his fantastically designed interior, to his kind mannered staff, who are on hand the second you walk through the door. As I sat down, a friendly waiter talked me through the pre set 3-course meal with a bottle of D’Abruzzo, an Italian wine, for just £34.90. Whilst looking over the menu a plate of freshly cooked bread was placed in front of me; the perfect way to whet the appetite. Looking through the menu, unlike many Italian restaurants, there is a wide variety of foods staring back at you to fit all tastes. After what felt like a lot of deliberation, I finally chose my starter from the specials menu, Funghi con gorgonzola; button mushrooms topped with honey and gorgonzola, served with toasted bruschetti, a mouth-watering combination of flavours. My main course was a little trickier to choose, however, as there were so many dishes that appealed. The waitresses were more than delighted to give me advice, and one in particular, fairly new to Verde, who described the food as ‘out of this world’. I took her advice and went for her favourite, the Pollo al Martini Bianco, pan fried chicken breast served in a white Martini sauce with smoke pancetta, mushrooms and zucchini fritti. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the rich sauce was just delectable. She was most certainly right, the food was out of this world. If this wasn’t enough, the chefs surprised me with a small bowl of spaghetti carbonara. (My favourite pasta dish). I certainly wasn’t going to complain, there was more of a smokey taste, but this gave the dish character unlike some carbonaras which can appear bland and tasteless, this is a must have for next time. Verde Pizzeria is a one of a kind Italian restaurant, however, if you haven’t got the time to sit down and eat, why not get a take out and enjoy the fantastic flavours in the comfort of your own home, I know I will certainly be taking the opportunity to do so very soon!! Restaurant Review

In the middle of the buzzing area of Cowley Road, you will find Malikas, which guarantees a superior Indian cuisine experience! The restaurant has just been refurbished and the new looks are very modern. There are seats for 70, which is an extension to the space before the refurbishment, but still the atmosphere is cozy and relaxing. We received a very warm and friendly welcome and our table was ready for us when we arrived. Of course, we started out with poppadoms, which dipped in the chutneys and sauces were already a delicious experience – and we could not resist asking for a second portion! We shared a good bottle of house wine to accompany our tasty intro to Malikas. We were so occupied with the poppadoms that we almost forgot to order, but when we did, not being curry aficionados, we got great advice form our waiter, who was very patient, explaining the differences of the many different dishes to us. Based on this knowledgeable advice, my guest, who normally always stays on the safe side by ordering a chicken Korma, even went for something new. I had chicken Rogan, which I was advised would suit me. The chef added extra tomato to cater to my liking, as they believe each customer deserves a curry special to them. As a side, we ordered Sag paneer, which is a mix of spinach and cheese and also Sag Aloo spinach and potatoes. We happily continued with our poppadoms until the mains arrived, and, God, were they good! Beautifully presented in artistic formed bowls, it was the most enjoyable eating experience! In the end we were too full for any desserts, but while we finished our drinks, Mohammed, the owner, told us a few more details about the restaurant. He explained to us that Malikas is more than just an average restaurant; most guests are returning customers (even after the refurbishment). Mohammed, a kindhearted chap, also sponsors the Oxford Brookes Cricket Team, which we were fortunate enough to meet, as they were eating there on the same night. In the future, there are charity nights planned at Malikas and for those who work nearby, they will soon have special offers at lunchtime. We found out that with great service and wonderful food, this restaurant really stands out in Oxford’s long list of Indian restaurants. Restaurant Review

Cafe Coco presents itself as the first of a number of quirky independent restaurants and bars on Cowley Road. Have you ever wished you could be in an exotic country, with the sun shining, a cocktail in hand, and a variety of foods with an array of different flavours? Café Coco takes you there, with its unique interior and sultry lighting; you would never believe you are just a mile from Oxford city centre! A romantic atmosphere was set upon us as soon as we stepped inside. Our waiter was immediately on hand, offering a warm smile and friendly conversation to make us feel welcome. Walking through the restaurant, you cannot resist admiring the unmistakable interior of Café Coco. Once seated, your eyes are immediately drawn to the focal point of the restaurant….the bar! Varieties of glamorous drinks are offered and the staff are more than happy to advise you on your selection. I selected a Red Russian, a mix of Absolut, Framboise, lemon and a dash of grenadine served in a sugar-rimmed glass - it was one of their fruitier cocktails. My guest went on to select a Mai Tai. This was another fruity concoction. There’s also an array of beers on offer including Peroni, Sagres and if you’re really feeling brave, you can select one of the litre bottles from the specials board. For our starter, we chose to share garlic dough bread with hummus; the garlic bread was perfectly cooked and then the freshly made hummus dip just made it the perfect way to start our dining experience. For my main, I selected the Greek Pizza, a mouthwatering combination of feta cheese, fresh tomato, peppers, onion, sesame seeds, olives, and oregano served on top of a freshly cooked doughy base. My guest went on to select the classic meat lasagne, a fantastic combination of flavours. However, if you’re after something a little bit different, why not try something from the specials board? Pudding was certainly going to be a challenge after our hearty starters and mains, so Instead of going for a gooey chocolate brownie, I indulged in a herbal tea and my guest a double Espresso. As we left we found ourselves discussing our next visit. The tremendous staff and lively atmosphere make it impossible to fault Café Coco - superb food at affordable prices make for the perfect experience. Not only were we deciding when next to visit, we even started to choose what to eat next!!! Reviewed by Paige Walford 23 Cowley Road, Oxford OX4 1HP Tel: 01865 200 232 Web: www.cafe-coco.co.uk

Nightlife Review

I arrived at Café Tarifa on a Friday night just around 8pm. What strikes you immediately as you walk in is the beautifully Moroccan styled bar, and the atmosphere is intimate and relaxed. The design throughout is unique, inspired by the beach bars of Tarifa in southern Spain. It simply transports you to warmer climes and a sunnier place- the worries of life just simply melt away. Café Tarifa has originally shaped walls, Perisian carpets, low seating and Moroccan furniture. Just like its sister restaurants with its original furnishings, Café Tarifa, as with Kazbar and Café Coco, provides a relaxed atmosphere for all to enjoy. The welcome we received was also first class. We took a seat at the bar and we were served immediately. Looking through the drinks menu, there are a combination of exotic cocktails and the more traditional ‘usual suspect’ cocktails. I selected a fruit martini, which suited my taste buds perfectly. My guest had expressed a love for White Russians after a member of staff had claimed she made ‘the best White Russian in Oxford’. She was right; we will be back again just for the White Russians! Before it got too cold we thought we should take our opportunity to enjoy the terrace outside at the back of the bar. What a wonderful surprise. Walking into this Oasis of tranquillity you feel as if you are stepping into a completely different world, Cowley becomes a distant memory. The walls are washed with Mediterranean colours, and curvy stone seating, where many were sitting enjoying there ‘shisha’, which you can buy for £7. The furniture is most certainly wonderfully unique. Café Tarifa is the perfect meeting point for diners moving on to Café Coco or Kazbar and it is the ultimate 'icing on the cake' after a meal out. If you’re looking for a fantastic atmosphere, reasonably priced drinks and fantastic service, this is the place for you.
