Oxford Castle’s Ghost Fest is back....are you brave enough to join us? Now in its fifth year, England’s premier ghost festival is back for a supernatural extravaganza based at one of the UK’s most haunted sites, Oxford Castle. The Castle reveals Oxford’s less well known history, one that’s rich with tales of great escapes, betrayal and even romance. Thought to be one of Britain’s most haunted buildings, its spiritual secrets are still relatively unexplored. Ghost Fest sets out to uncover the dark mysteries that lie within the grounds of the Castle. With over fifteen recorded ghosts and a very lively paranormal history documented since 1071, the Oxford Castle Unlocked visitor attraction, with the nation’s leading ghost-hunting specialists, has planned an unforgettable month of supernatural phenomenon and an experience to remember. Visitors have the opportunity to take part in a range of ghost hunting events alongside the most renowned paranormal companies, including two very special ghost hunts with Living TV’s Most Haunted parapsychologist Dr. Ciarán O’Keeffe and Steve Parsons. Oxford Castle Unlocked has already experienced the ghostly limelight when the notorious ghost hunter Yvette Fielding visited with her popular show Most Haunted, during which visit some members of the team were shaken up by all the unexplained phenomena. From Most Haunted to ‘most spotted’, Oxford Castle Unlocked can also reveal that one of its many spooky inhabitants – Empress Matilda – is Britain’s number one most - seen ghost. Ghost hunting specialists, Fright Nights, who are hosting two paranormal events in Ghost Fest, discovered the ghost’s popularity whilst analysing feedback on spooky sightings from their customer database. Recorded sightings of Empress Matilda date back to the 1990s when the attraction was still an active prison and two prison guards are reported to have watched in horror as a strange white mist faded in front of their eyes. Who knows what spiritual encounters may take place this year? So if you think you're brave enough to join the ghost hunts at Oxford Castle Unlocked, and hope to see Empress Matilda for yourself, visit www.ghostfest.co.uk for full event listings and further information. Education Article Twenty years of coming to Oxford. How others see us! On Friday September 20th students of Kyorin University, Tokyo, enjoyed a dinner at Lady Margaret Hall to mark the 20th anniversary of their annual visit to Oxford as students of the College of International Education. Before the meal the students were addressed by Mr Bart Ashton the Domestic Bursar at Lady Margaret Hall. Prior to the students’ arrival in Oxford they take part in a six hour Distance Learning programme which uses the internet and webcam. Once in Oxford they continue their English Language course which is based on a study of the cultural differences between Japan and the UK. Lessons at Lady Margaret Hall are supplemented by visits to places of local interest such as the Natural History Museum and St Mary’s Church and by excursions to London, Warwick, and Stratford. Social activities include punting, skating and bowling. Punting still remains a mystery to some students and this year one or two finished up in the Cherwell. Cream teas, fish and chips and the English pub continue to be firm favourites but this year the barbecue at Lady Margaret Hall proved to be a great success. All the students greatly appreciated the premises and beautiful grounds of Lady Margaret Hall. To begin with most of the students are surprised by the great differences between the environment in Oxford and Tokyo, commenting favourably on the open spaces, moderate temperatures ( 35C in Tokyo) and friendly host families and shop assistants. They expressed surprise that the bus driver does not call out each stop and that our trains do not always run on time. As the three weeks progressed however the differences seemed to become less important and what was particularly appreciated was the vibrant multicultural atmosphere in Oxford together with the medieval architecture. Above all it became apparent that the Kyorin students found Oxford people to be very welcoming and friendly which is a heartening message for us all. This extract from a speech at the farewell dinner by one of the students, although expressed in language which was not typical of most of the students, expresses the feelings of most. “Although the taste of food is completely different from that in Japan, your serious cooking makes it the nicest food in the world. Although the weather here is completely different from that in Japan, your careful reminding us of wearing warmer clothes makes it the most wonderful weather in the world. Although living here is completely different from that in Japan, your warm hearted telling us a lot about Oxford makes it the most comfortable life in the world. You our host families, have given us a warm home outside our own. The time which has been spent with you will be unforgettable forever. When I lost me way friends took me home. When I didn’t understand what people were saying, friends helped me to translate it. When I felt cold people lent me their coats. Friends made everyday here filled with happiness. They gave us the courage to face all our troubles even though we are far away from home”. By John Hudson, Principal College of Internation Education Bocardo House, 24b St Michaels Street, Oxford OX1 2EB Tel: 01865 202238 Web: www.cie-oxford.com

In Oxford Article Keeping The Wheels in Motion The Rise and Rise of the Oxford Bicycle Company Ltd Only set up in March this year, Richard Rosser charts the astonishing success of this small family business to show how one man’s passion became a profitable business venture. He talks to Dave, the man responsible for it all. The concept is simple – a mobile bicycle company offering commercially competitive rates. The website claims “Whether it’s building them, servicing them, fixing them or riding them, quite simply we love them…” And it’s a formula that works. With major clients like Oxford University and Oxfordshire County Council already on board, there is clearly a demand for his services. Dave spent his youth gaining valuable experience working in a bicycle shop as well as qualifying as an engineer following a four year college course. But it was a project last summer that changed the direction his career was to take. “I built myself a little single speed bike. It was a new craze, like the single speed old retro racers. People kept asking me where I got it from and I told them I built it myself.” Inevitably perhaps he ended up building a few for friends but it wasn’t until he was honeymooning in Australia last Christmas that he made the courageous decision to leave the security of his job to set the business up. “I was just doing up a few second hand bikes at first but then I contacted the university and they were keen to get me in.” Luck was on his side. Although they already used a mobile bicycle repair company there was an excess demand not being met. “I kind of filled the gap there. I do four sites for them a month now and then the County Council approached me and I started working with them about a month ago. So from when I started in March it has just taken off.” And it doesn’t stop there. Dave is currently exploring the possibility of working with schools and providing workshops for students who show a particular interest or aptitude. But Dave would be the first to admit he can’t give up his motor just yet. With so much stock to carry he still has to rely on four wheels. He might be carrying fifty tyres or thirty different types of bicycle chain at any one time – all the spare parts that might be needed that day. It seems that nothing is too much trouble. With such a focus on customer care and quality of service and if the glowing testimonials of satisfied customers featured on the website are anything to go by, this is a business that will continue to strengthen and grow. www.oxfordbicyclecompany.co.uk

Hotel Review
Set in 300 acres, the Oxfordshire is impressive from the time you leave the main road, as you drive along the long sweeping driveway to the entrance of the Hotel with its Palladian pillars, giving a touch of old age elegance to a very modern Hotel/Golf/Spa complex. There are excellent parking facilities, with a bag drop off point at the entrance and valet parking available on request. The Hotel was opened to the public in May 2010, expanding its highly prestigious Golf Club to include a 4-Star Hotel and Spa. Guests are immediately struck by the incredible views over Oxfordshire, which they are able to enjoy from the terraces, restaurant, bedrooms, and of course from the World class golf course itself. Residents are offered a massive discount on green fees, and anyone who is a golfing enthusiast would find this both challenging and exciting. Check-in was smooth, and thankfully, the Reception confirmed that, “Yes there is a toothbrush and toothpaste in the bathroom” – as in my hurry to arrive I had completely overlooked this! It has 4 amazing Penthouse Suites and 46 “Standard” rooms, which are incredibly well furnished with a huge bed, luxurious bedding and furniture, including a Tassimo coffee machine, which even I found easy to operate – providing wonderful coffee in the morning. Free internet is offered throughout the Hotel, making life easy for visiting business executives. The bathroom is large and luxurious, with a walk-in shower big enough for two! All toiletries, (The White Company) are provided, along with fluffy white towels. Dinner began with a glass of champagne, an array of freshly baked breads with olives and hummus. The menu is select and all dishes sounded wonderful. Two chose crispy duck salad, and one scallops – excellent and very filling – beautifully presented and rather more on the plate than you would find in many other 4* or indeed 5* hotels. The main courses offered a great variety; the vegetarian cannelloni enjoyed by one companion was “absolutely delicious”. I had the Sea Bass and Scallops on mash – mouth-watering – but defeating after the large starter! Our other diner had the braised beef, which again looked enticing and was thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately we were unable to sample the puddings as we were all too full – the choice again would have been difficult to make as all looked incredible. The chosen white wine was smooth and complimented the meal perfectly and the level of service throughout was first class and personalised. We retired to the lounge to take coffee, ending the evening perfectly. Breakfast was an equally satisfying affair, with an array of cold and cooked breakfast available. The Oxfordshire offers a Golf Club Members bar with accompanying shop, top quality conference facilities, with each room offering impressive private balconies for use by those having booked. Unfortunately I did not have time to use the Spa but with two full-time staff offering an array of treatments and elegant and tempting treatment rooms I will return! If you feel more energetic, you can use the indoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, and if you must – the state-of-the-art gym! From a business perspective, the Oxfordshire offers you the opportunity to indulge your clients, or team-build in an enviable environment. Also, if you want a relaxing weekend away not too far from home, the Oxfordshire is perfect. All in all, the Oxfordshire has so much to offer that I am afraid that once it becomes well-known, it will be impossible to get a booking! Inside: 4500 Miles From Delhi Gee’s
Restaurant Review
So it’s Friday night, you’re in the centre of Oxford and looking for a great curry. If you ask me for my opinion, then I would certainly recommend 4500 Miles from Delhi, every day of the way. It’s a fantastic central venue with absolutely awesome food. Nav Kandola and his team have created a modern and fresh restaurant which serves tasty food with fantastic service. The menu has a range of traditional Indian dishes, all freshly cooked by a team of chefs who seem to take the utmost care with each dish served from the kitchen. After the customary starter of poppadoms and chutneys, I, together with five friends, chose the Gourmet Banquet so that we could enjoy a range of the different options and meals. The starter was a delicious platter with the Chicken Malai Tikka and the Amritsari Machchi (a lovely fried fish) being the favourites from a platter of five enticing options. The main course was a range of different curries and side dishes with the Lamb Rogan Josh and Tarka Dal winning lots of ‘mmmm’s’ from around the table. I personally enjoyed the specialist Dhaba Murgh dish which was spicy but had a beautiful flavour. For curry veterans such as me, they say that the best way to judge an Indian restaurant is through the quality of their naan breads. In over fifteen years of enjoying Indian food all over the world, the keema naan served at 4500 miles from Delhi was one of the best I have ever tasted. It was piping hot, full of sumptuous meat and cooked to perfection! The first one was devoured quickly by the guys around the table, but when I asked for another, it was served within just a few minutes - perfect for mopping up the remnants of the curry sauce on our plates! With full stomachs there was no room left for desert, but we slipped in a few of the complimentary chocolates and finished off our Cobra’s and Merlot (well we had to experience the quality of the wines didn’t we!) and thanked the team as we left. So, in summary, I would give the restaurant 9 out of 10. Awesome food, great service and all at a reasonable price! 4500 Miles from Delhi is certainly going to prove popular if it continues to deliver quality at the high levels we experienced! Well worth a visit! James White – CEO InTouch CRM 4500 Miles From Delhi 41 Park End Street Oxford OX1 1JD Tel: 01865 244 922 Web: www.milesfromdelhi.com/oxford

Restaurant Review
Gee’s restaurant, housed in an elegant Victorian conservatory on the Banbury Road in North Oxford has, over the last twenty years become something of an Oxford institution. Oxford students aspire to celebrate their graduation here in style and with locals and visitors it has become a necessary pit stop to sample the wonderful brasserie food in a stylish and contemporary setting. Part of the Mogford group and owned by Jeremy Mogford, Gee’s houses an amazing collection of Gary Hume artwork, worth a visit alone! My husband and I often visit Gee’s and always enjoy their Sunday evening jazz supper and the warm and friendly atmosphere the staff here create so well. When we arrived on a slightly gloomy Monday evening recently we were greeted by amiable General Manager Laura Cottrell who announced with great enthusiasm that the new autumn menu had arrived. It was 6.30pm and the restaurant was just over half full, their early supper menu obviously proves very popular we noted. Laura talked us through the new menu and wine list, crab and shellfish flown in from Jersey weekly, meat and vegetables from the owner’s Oxfordshire farm, complete trust in their suppliers to provide them with consistently great products is what they rely on she told us proudly. We ordered a bottle of Berry Brothers Ordinary White, a strange name to give your house wine ‘ordinary’ but Laura explained that Berry Brothers had a reputation where ordinary means extraordinarily good and it was! To start I ordered the soufflé Suisse and my husband the baked cep and onion tart, both were exemplary. Main courses arrived in the form of bourride of red mullet, brill and salt cod and roast partridge with bread sauce and game chips. The bourride was a classic delicious creamy fish stew with generous chunks of fish, fennel, aioli, parsley, boiled potatoes and croutons served piping hot in a le creuset pot. The partridge was perfection, cooked through but still pink with brussel sprouts, game chips, watercress, roast chestnuts and chipolatas, drizzled with its roasting juices and served with a bowl of superb bread sauce. For me traditional accompaniments are crucial with game and my partridge really was ‘properly garnished’. Pudding arrived after time enough to talk to Laura about the Jazz coming up the following month and hearing all about their popular Sunday lunch menu, the more we talked the more we realised that Gee’s really is all things to all people, offering a unique setting with a menu and wine list that really do deliver and prove value for money. Lemon syllabub and winter rhubarb ice cream arrived at the table with little shortbread biscuits and ended the meal perfectly. We’ll be back, we concluded, very soon………….
