Welcome to Living in Oxford Welcome to the January edition of Living in Oxford. Happy New Year to all our readers! We hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and are feeling refreshed and ready to take on 2017. Why not kick off the new year with health and happiness in mind by taking part in the Bloodwise Blenheim Palace Triathlon, which takes place on Saturday 3rd June at, you guessed it, Blenheim Palace. I’ve taken part in the past three Blenheim Triathlons and each and every one has been an incredible experience. You rub shoulders with some serious athletes and it’s just great to be a part of such a fantastic event, superbly organised and in aid of a wonderful cause. What’s stopping you getting involved? You can always sign up as a team and just do one of the legs if the whole thing isn’t for you. I promise you it will be an unforgettable experience. As usual, see our list of upcoming events on page 10 and get planning exciting trips for the new year. Why not check out the new exhibition at Wiseman Gallery in Summertown, featuring the stunning works of Peter Kettle, about which you can read more on page 26. Also in this issue we feature great reviews of Oxford’s favourite Italian restaurant, La Cucina, and the owners’ new brain child just down the road, Cuttlefish. Assassin's Creed Officially, Callum no longer exists. He’s been “executed”, and now, kept in a secret facility, he has the chance to experience his assassin ancestor’s memories and learn the ‘Assassin’s Creed’. A revolutionary technology called the Animus allows him to relive the life of Aguilar, an elite member of the Assassins during the Spanish Inquisition. Gaining knowledge and skills from the past, he’ll use them to fight against the oppressive Templars.
La La Land ‘La La Land’ follows the entwined stories of Mia, an aspiring actress who serves coffee between auditions, and Sebastian, a jazz pianist confined to playing the hits in dingy bars. A breathless, life-affirming romance begins between the two of them, and they’re happy for the first time in a long time. But as they finally find success, the dreams they’ve pursued for so long threaten to tear them apart.
Sing ‘Sing’ is the story of Buster Moon, a dapper, down-on-his-luck koala whose theatre has fallen on hard times. In a last-ditch attempt to save it, he organises a singing competition. It’s open to everyone, and everyone turns up: Rosita, a pig who used to sing but gave it up to have a family; Ash, a punk rock porcupine; and Johnny, a gorilla torn between his family’s criminal gang and his showbiz dreams.

The LEGO Batman Movie It’s time to experience Batman’s awesome world in ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’. He has millions of dollars, all the gadgets money can buy, and a sweet (very dark) costume. And how better to do that than by taking him on as a sidekick?
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk ‘Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk’ follows a 19-year-old private who became a hero in a harrowing battle in Iraq, and was brought home for a victory tour. Based on the bestselling novel and directed by Academy Award-winner Ang Lee.
Beauty And The Beast Retelling the timeless tale for a new generation, ‘Beauty And The Beast’ is the story of Belle, a spirited, intelligent and beautiful woman who is taken prisoner by a beast. Art & Antiques Article:
Peter Kettle ‘On Meadow and River’ 14th – 28th January In January 2017, Sarah Wiseman Gallery will launch an exciting solo exhibition of by Peter Kettle, a dynamic young painter based in Bristol. His new body of work is inspired by Oxfordshire. Peter’s atmospheric landscapes explore the British countryside, in particular his native Wales. His typical style is highly expressive and textured, using a variety of materials from oil paint to clay and acrylic. The result is painting that is highly attuned to the landscape in all its senses from describing terrain to the weather elements. Over the late summer and autumn of 2016, Peter began work on his Oxfordshire series with a walk along the Glyme Valley Way. Stretching from Chipping Norton to Woodstock, it takes in the pathways and rolling countryside in and around Oxford, passing ancient sites of abandoned villages and Roman remains. Endlessly curious, Peter’s walks have taken him all over the county, from Whittenham Clumps to Abingdon and Hinksey Lake, drawing and painting all the while. His animated style and fearless approach to the canvas brings to life Oxfordshire’s late summer light, fields of stubble and hedgerows. The exhibition title ‘On Meadow and River’, is taken from Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem ‘Binsey Poplars’, a 19th century observation of a dramatically changing landscape. Peter’s paintings are a raw yet sensitive exploration of a county that has seen countless changes over the centuries, and yet is still in touch with its rural traditions and customs. Peter Kettle has worked with Sarah Wiseman Gallery since 2013, when he first approached the gallery. Spotting something special in his work, Sarah Wiseman offered him an exhibition on the spot, to great success. Since then, Peter’s star has continued to rise. He has been identified as ‘One to Watch’ by Moneyweek magazine and in 2015 he was made a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. He has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts since 2014. Peter was born and brought up in Wales, where he began his painting career working from a disused milking shed near Cardiff. Braving freezing temperatures, he worked tirelessly to establish his painting practice. He now lives and works in Bristol, continuing to exhibit nationally. This will be his second solo show with Sarah Wiseman Gallery, following a hugely successful exhibition in January 2015.

Restaurant Review:
Cuttlefish Reviewed by Ruth Hawkins 2nd December
It was a very cold Monday evening for our first visit to Cuttlefish, but the welcome was very warm, and the atmosphere extremely welcoming. Olives and water were awaiting us on our table when we arrived, and the service was friendly and attentive. They also clearly knew their menu and gave steers towards their own favourites. My husband and I had last visited this restaurant about 10 years ago, when it was Fishers, and I have really fond memories of a lovely family meal with my parents and grandparents, but for some reason we’d not been back since. Did Cuttlefish live up to these memories? Most definitely, yes! The Menu is varied, and although mostly fish and seafood, there are burgers and steaks and vegetarian dishes to choose from too. I had the scallops from the specials board to start and they were delicious! The white wine creamy sauce they were served with was just right, as was the crispy pancetta. For my main course I had the fritto misto – a good serving of lightly battered whitebait, calamari, two giant king prawns and the highlight for me, some whiting that melted in my mouth. It was delicious! My husband enjoyed his dressed crab, and swordfish with lentils and chorizo, also from the specials board. When we booked, I enquired about whether the restaurant was suitable for our 10 year old budding foodie daughter. They positively insisted that we brought her with, and were extremely welcoming towards her. The budding foodie was also tempted by my scallops, and indeed I did end up with one less on my plate...but she plumped for the whitebait to start, followed by paella. Both received massive thumbs up, as well as various pleasing sounds and comments as she ate! For desert, I had a white chocolate fondant and vanilla ice cream, which had just the right amount of gooiness. My husband had red wine stewed pears and ice cream, which he also enjoyed. Both from the specials board. The small person plumped for white chocolate cheesecake and this was another definite hit. We will definitely be back.

Restaurant Review:
La Cucina Reviewed by Matt Wright 4th December
“Oh….I’m so full….I honestly couldn’t eat another mouthful.” The desultory remains of my partner’s chocolate cake lay in small pieces on the plate beside me. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a flash of steel which buried itself deep in my caramel-topped panna cotta – so much for feeling full eh? However, let’s rewind an hour or so….coming in off the streets on a cold December afternoon, the first thing which hits you as you enter La Cucina is the smell of fresh pizza wafting from the bustling, open-galleried kitchen. Our waitress confessed that her favourite was the ‘Sole Mio’, and when you see the staff walking out with a pizza box from the kitchen at the end of their shift (very good discounts if you work here apparently), you know that the food must be pretty special! And so it was. Tim, the maitre d’ recommended the Starter Specials flatbread with pear & gorgonzola along with stuffed mushrooms, or ‘fungi ripieni con scamorza, rucola & pinoli’ to give it its proper name – why do things always sound so much better in Italian? My partner opted for the Aperol Spritz as an aperitif, whilst I plumped for an elegant white Orvieto. For our Mains, we stuck to the Specials – why ruin a winning formula? red mullet with saffron fregula (small pasta balls which hail from Sardinia) and veal involtini (stuffed with herbs), bathed in a rich deep velvety sauce, the sort you only usually see glistening from the pages of upmarket food magazines. Paired with a robust Nero d’Avola (literally, ‘The Black Grape of Avola’, a small town in south east Sicily) in order to stand up to the strong earthy flavours, I felt like I could have been sitting in a small local tavern, having just come in from a hunt or after doing something else manly – in other words, authentic cooking….or terroir if you’re an avid reader of the aforementioned upmarket food magazines. We’ve already covered desserts (still not amused by my partner's larceny there), so let’s skip onto coffee and the complimentary limoncellos – feeling adventurous by now, I skipped my usual wimpy cappuccino for a proper, hairs-on-chest espresso, dripping with caffeinated intent, before downing the digestif in one and just about resisting the temptation to bang down my glass on the table. That’s what La Cucina does to you – transports you and unleashes your inner Italian!
