Get Fit Outdoors with TLA...Everyone's doing it! A new year with great intentions, but how many times does it stop there, with the good intentions. Why not do something about changing your lifestyle this year with someone who can really make a difference to the way you lead your life. Tom Alden of TLA Fitness. TLA Fitness was founded by Tom, a former Royal Marine, in 2008. After experiencing, first hand, the advantages of exercising outdoors, Tom saw a niche in the market for combining effective training sessions with the huge benefits gained both physically and mentally from simply ‘getting outdoors’. Out of this, TLA Fitness was born. Having advertised a trial class around the fields and countryside close to his home in South Oxfordshire, the feedback he received was incredible, and it was clear there was a huge demand for bespoke outdoor fitness training. Tom recalled. “I had a feeling there might be a demand for what I did, but like with anything, until you test it, you don’t know how successful it will be. The consistent levels of attendance, positive feedback and the obvious levels of enjoyment my clients were experiencing convinced me that this was something I could do well and make a very real difference to the well being and lifestyle of my growing number of customers.” TLA Fitness now runs outdoor fitness classes in six different locations around Oxford, with an average of eight classes per week. With the ever growing interest and demand for getting fit outdoors, this number will continue to rise, giving existing and potential customers more choices and less excuses! In addition to the outdoor fitness classes TLA Fitness also offers Personal Training sessions on a One to One basis, Private Group Training for family groups right the way through to Corporate Groups and professional teams, Core Strength and Stability classes and TLA Runners. Please visit www.tlafitness.com for more information. Together with Tom and his team of instructors at TLA Fitness, you will find the correct workout program to suit ALL abilities, fitness levels and ages. Tom concludes. “I will ensure you see and feel the results immediately with TLA Fitness! See you Outdoors!” www.tlafitness.com

Playing Burton Sat 22nd Jan: From humble roots as the twelfth child of a drunken Welsh miner, Richard Burton rose to become the world’s first megastar, and the most nominated actor ever to win an Oscar. But the real Burton, little Richie Jenkins, was known to only a few. This one-man play is presented in Burton’s own words and those of the great writers he admired. Directed by Cornerstone favourite Guy Masterson, Welshman Josh Richards reincarnates both the actor and the myth in a powerfully charming performance. A fascinating insight into the life of a flawed genius.Times: 7.30pm Tickets: £14, £12.50 (concs), £11.50 (members)

Sat 12th Feb – Sun 27th Mar: Gladys Deacon, second wife to the 9th Duke of Marlborough, was one of the most eccentric Duchesses in the English peerage. An American who married into the peerage without being an heiress, Gladys fitted no traditional mould. Famed for her beauty, she destroyed her legendary looks by early attempts at plastic surgery. Born in 1881 she was cosmopolitan by upbringing and inclination, and came to be associated with Monet, Proust and the Duke of Connaught. This special exhibition displayed in the Long Library will reveal the early years of her upbringing within a Belle Epoch family, to high society life at Blenheim Palace, to her reclusive years in later life.

Health & Sport Review OXFORDSHIRE health & racquets club by
Jason Martin, Racquets Manager at Esporta in North Oxford, is unique. Hailing from the City (as a business graduate), this ex professional squash player brought, by his own admission, more managerial skills than tennis coaching skills with him when he joined Esporta ten years ago. "The club was brand new, hugely popular and the place to be seen. It still is, which is testimony to the hard work which goes into making Esporta the leading Health and Racquets Club in the county. This propelled the Racquets Club which grew quickly and helped me to grow into the role quickly also. "My aim has always been to not only offer the best facilities but also the best coaching team and events. I thrive in running great events across three sports, namely indoor badminton, squash and tennis." Last year the club hosted an LTA Grade 3 Regional tennis event, with nearly 400 competitors, certainly the biggest event in the region in the last five years. This was for children aged 8 to 18 and really helped to put us on the map as a Racquets Club. Coincidentally, I am just writing up our schedule of events which are open to non members at the moment, as this has become a fundamental aspect of the Racquets Club and is ultimately responsible for driving memberships." With four indoor courts all year round and use of 28 outdoor courts in summer, Jason is blessed with arguably the best tennis facility in the county and finding court space in winter is his only real headache. "We had 120 people in our club championships recently, and we also open our doors to non members in holidays, something I am keen to develop as it helps us to interact with the local community. Although our focus has to be on membership, we have to be open to non members to use and see what fantastic facilities we have." A year round programme has been developed by Jason over the last decade for children aged from 3 to 18 years. His Academy is taught by a highly experienced team of LTA licenced coaches, always on the look out for emerging talent. The club has just committed to entering a team in the PSL National Squash League again for the fifth year. In this prestigious event the club reached the National Final last year narrowly losing to fellow Esporta Club Surrey. There are only twelve teams across the country and it attracts the best home grown and overseas players. Oxford's top players are Madeleine Perry from Ireland (world ranked 6), and Cameron Pilley from Australia (world ranked 16). "The squash is great for members to watch and is a great advert for us to promote the Racquets Club. We are continually trying to raise our game here at Esporta, attracting new members, involving the wider local community and giving our existing members some great events to get involved in or just watch. We have developed a thriving community of our own at the Racquets Club and it is great to be a part of." For more information about the Esporta Racquets Club, contact Jason as per the details below: Tel: 01865 318388 E-Mail: Jason.matin@esporta.com Web: www.esporta.com

Restaurant Review
There’s nothing like a warm, inviting restaurant on a cold day to set you up for an afternoon’s shopping and we had a great two hours at Villandry, Bicester Village, before hitting the shops. Bicester Village on a Sunday is busy at the best of times, but just before Christmas, even the overspill car park needed an overspill car park. Having dropped Abi and Tina at the door of Villandry, which was beautifully adorned with cascading snowdrop lights, I secured a spot, eventually, and made my way to the warmth of the restaurant. What an atmosphere. Think combination of busy French Brasserie and Harvey Nics in Knightsbridge and you’ll be able to conjure up that happy, vibrant felling you get when you walk in to either. Practically every table was taken. A mixture of couples, families and groups of fashionable youngsters combined to give a real buzz as I made my way from the entrance to the girls who were already getting stuck in to the menu and a pre dinner drink. Service throughout was exemplary. It wasn’t just us – it was evident from the activity of the waiters and waitresses that making sure their customers were happy was high on the list of their priorities. There was, however, little to complain about. A steady stream of steaks, chickens and moules frites passed us as if the whole menu was on parade to facilitate our own choice. We decided against a starter as we were running a little late and made a pact to do main and dessert – although the girls, as if I didn’t know better, were to renege on our deal! Abi plumped for the steak – again – an 8oz Rib Eye steak with a side order of chips. Served on a wooden board, Abi couldn’t get enough. For a little ‘un she can certainly tuck away a good steak. Tina chose the smoked haddock and leek fishcakes, polished off with ease. I had my eye on the succulent half rotisserie roasted chickens (served with rosemary and garlic) as soon as I walked in the restaurant, and this proved to be an excellent choice. A side of creamed spinach and new potatoes made for great Sunday meal. The chicken was tender and made for a filling main. And so to the deal-breaker. I had the glazed lemon tart for dessert and the girls SHARED a sticky toffee pudding – lightweights! Both were the ideal complement to our mains, but, in hindsight, the one between two route was probably the best choice given that the sticky toffee pudding was very, very naughty! Faultless. We all had a great meal, immaculate service and, all in all, a first class dining experience. Make sure the next time you get dragged to the shops, make a day of it at Bicester Village and book a table at Villandry – you won’t regret it! Restaurant Review
On a cold and snowy evening, my friend and I went out to warm our cockles with what we were anticipating would be a wonderful dinner at Qumins. We had been told that Qumins was recently voted the seventh best Indian restaurant in England (by The Independent, no less), so the bar had already been raised. Were we disappointed? Not a chance. From the outside, Qumins looked inviting. The restaurant wasn’t busy, but it was still early. With a sophisticated and modern décor, the orange and red colours combined with the dimmed light to make the atmosphere warm and intimate. We were greeted by the friendly Ali, the enchanting manager of Qumins, and chose our table at the back of the restaurant. Our waiter offered us some papadoms to start, served with a pickle tray comprising five different options. Though my friend realised a little too late that one of the dips was fairly spicy, the papadmos were a pleasant start to our dinner. Although Indian restaurants do exist in my native Holland, I have never visited one in my life, and that went for my friend too, so this was a very new experience for both of us. We spent some time studying the menu, and Ali was a great help suggesting dishes which would suit our likes and dislikes. Qumins has a comperehensive menu with, amongst others, traditional, tandoori and house specialities. When our main courses arrived, we looked around and the restaurant had almost become full – we had been so absorbed in the experience that this certainly took me by surprise. We started with the king prawn puri and chicken tikka and chose the lamb madras and lamb methi as main courses. Both the king prawn and the chicken tikka were well seasoned, the king prawn was spicy, but not too much. Both were unmistakably tender and absolutely delicious. It’s certainly one of the best lambs I’ve ever eaten, so if you are a fan of lamb, don’t miss this! The service was excellent at Qumins - we were asked several times if everything was OK - professional, yet unobtrusive. Because of the perfectly balanced portions, we had just enough space left to go for desert, a Tartufo chocolate ice-cream. A great finale to an excellent evening.
