In Oxford Magazine January 2013

January Welcome to January in Oxford and 2013 Is it really 2013 already?!?!? Doesn’t time fly! This year we have some fantastic events to look forward to in Oxfordshire and being spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out and first class attractions, we sometimes forget how lucky we are. One such place is Browns, a great supporter of In Oxford Magazine in 2012 and adorning our first cover of the year. I was fortunate enough to enjoy an early supper there just before Christmas – read the review inside. Getting fit is always top of the list of priorities at the start of the year and you can make a good start with either yoga or zumba – see reviews inside. If you’re keen on cycling, we are all cycling from Edinburgh to Blenheim Palace in May – call us now to find out about joining up. Have a great 2013 – don’t forget vouch, our superb voucher scheme which goes instant soon so you don’t have to wait for us to send you the voucher. We also have plans for a brand new website and lots more of exciting developments in 2013. Stay in touch. Richard Rosser Editor, In Oxford Magazine

We had a pre concert booking for Browns at 5pm on a Wednesday evening in December, earlier than usual for dinner but it was nice to sit down and relax without time pressure. When I arrived, the girls (my wife and 12 year old daughter, Abi) were already seated, tucking into bread, olives and oils, seated in the window. I was greeted by the engaging Ahara, who was to be the star of the show. I ordered a Peroni, a veritable Olympic torch of a drink! It certainly quenched my thirst! Browns was just starting to fill up, with couples and large groups out for a night of celebrating pre Christmas. Ahara took our food order and we were soon tucking into scallops, prawn cocktail and pate. Whilst Tina chose a glass of house champagne to accompany her starter, I had a glass of beautifully chilled and wonderfully dry Chablis. For the main course, both of the girls were tempted by the succulent burgers which the table alongside had taken delivery of early in our visit – they did look good! I went for the fish and chips which were exquisite! Moist, plump and incredibly tasty, my tempura battered cod loin steak, with crushed minted peas, tartare sauce and Browns chunky chips and house ketchup was scrumptious. Presentation of the food at Browns was certainly impressive. My cod was accompanied by a tricolour of sauces, as previously referred to, and the burgers were certainly ‘pumped up’ as burgers should be. I have already alluded to the excellent service, but must throw Ahara into the spotlight. Diligent, professional and attentive, we couldn’t have asked for more. If there is a record for picking up AND replacing a customer’s knife when they clumsily drop it on the floor (yes, me!), then Ahara should hold the title – I reckon she took a flat three seconds from the knife hitting the floor! Although the deserts looked more than enticing, we were all full. Tina had a latte whilst Abi had a baby cappuccino and I polished off the last of my glorious Chablis. A solid 8 ½ out of 10 for Browns – great food, first class food and a great atmosphere. This was just the right aperitif to a wonderful Christmas Carol Service at Christ Church. Next time you’re in Oxford, try Browns for breakfast, lunch, tea or dinner, or why not just pop in for a drink. Impeccable from Browns. 5 - 11 Woodstock Road Oxford OX2 6HA Tel: 01865 511995 www.browns-restaurants

Grace under pressure: personality disorder and society Tuesday 29th January: Personality disorder is a common but misunderstood psychiatric category. The media mostly only report it in association with serious crimes. The NHS has tended not to prioritise it. The future of the government’s ‘Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder’ project is uncertain. And yet the vast majority of sufferers have committed no crimes, but live much of their lives in a constrained or miserable way, not establishing the connections and satisfactions most of us take for granted. Dr Steve Pearce, a psychiatrist who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of personality disorder and leads a nationally commissioned service in Oxfordshire, will outline some of the features of this neglected area of mental health practice. Threads Of Silk and Gold: Ornamental Textiles From Meiji Japan Until Sunday 27th January 2013: Many of us are aware of the beauty of the traditional Japanese kimono; the exhibition will introduce the less well known but equally spectacular ornamental textiles that were made for the Western market during Japan’s Meiji era (1868–1912). This was the famous period of Japonisme, which saw the European Impressionist painters exploring themes and styles taken from Japanese art, and Victorian rooms filled with Japanese decorative arts and crafts.

Gangster Squad Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and--if he has his way--every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop...except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara

The Last Stand Schwarzenegger stars as Sheriff Owens, a man who has resigned himself to a life of fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction after leaving his LAPD post following a bungled operation. After a spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy, a notorious, wanted drug kingpin is hurtling toward the border at 200 mph in a specially outfitted car with a hostage. He is headed, it turns out, straight for Summerton Junction.

Health & Fitness Feature

As a first time mother, I now know that no matter how much you prepare and listen to the "your life is going to change dramatically" quote, nothing quite prepares you for the directional change and utter consumption of a baby - both the best thing ever to happen to you - this amazing little person that you have grown and waited to see, finally here .... and oh that first smile ... and also the worst thing when it comes to sleep deprivation, body change, life ability to do things with lack of time...and so forth ... mums out there ... you get the picture...so where is the balance? Trying to get to my physio class without baby was a struggle let alone doing the followup exercises once at home... I am a Zumba instructor and trying to instruct my class when i wanted to do the exercise but physically couldn't, was both frustrating and exhausting. I needed something I could do that was normal for me, not have to worry about baby care, feel good and meet other mummies because somehow it feels safe being around others that are also learning this new way of life and it helps you to laugh at the trials tribulations and successes So this is why I am starting Post Natal Zumba. I have a 4 month old baby that will be joining us, and may join in too. Please help me to get the word out - exercise and bring your baby, it helps combat any baby blues by dancing and feeling good at an affordable price too. As a new mum I have just wanted to get out and do something for me and be able to bring and involve my baby too, and I get to do my exercises. Low impact fun exercises ... and we can share any of the unsettled baby rocking Baby changing facilities .... meet other mums...social Come along and try it. www.zumba-oxford.co.uk About Tamara Tamara has always danced and is a qualified fitness instructor with Future Fit. She now teaches Zumba to adults and Zumbatomic to children. Health & Fitness Review

YogaVenue is located at 2 Avenue Road Oxford Cowley and owned by Alessandro and Caroline, local Oxford residents. YogaVenue is a new dedicated Yoga studio which offers different styles of Yoga including Hot Yoga. Hot Yoga is a new form of Yoga which is becoming extremely popular, and as I was later told by Alessandro, Hot Yoga suits those who particularly have problems with their legs and back as it helps to build strength and flexibility, but especially the muscles around the knee. This was my lucky day as that is exactly what I need..... Arriving I didn’t really know what to expect. I had participated in Yoga a couple of times before, nevertheless Hot Yoga was a completely new concept to me. Walking through the doors I was greeted by my smiling teacher who was very happy to answer all of my questions. She explained that Hot Yoga is a series of Hatha Yoga postures and breathing exercises carried out in a room heated to 40 degrees C. The YogaVenue studio is great; it has two studios and the interior is elegantly styled portraying a calm and serene atmosphere. You can see that Alessandro and Caroline have spent a great amount of time in providing the highest quality facilities they possibly can for their clients. I was handed a towel and mat which are available for hire (the mats are cleaned after each class!) and was shown to the Hot studio where it was suggested I take a few minutes before class in order for my body to get used to the heat. Apparently it can be quite common in your first couple of sessions to feel slightly dizzy. This is due to the high temperatures, however, once your body adapts to the heat, you feel amazing. Once everyone one was in the studio the class began. The teacher talks you through the postures during the 90 minute session. Regular students are generally in the front row so the less experienced students can get visual cues alongside the dialogue. Our teacher was very calm and talked us all through each of the postures step by step, also offering help to those who needed it. I must admit this was a lot harder than I had first anticipated, yet extremely satisfying – I can now definitely see why people become addicted to this type of yoga. Especially with the high quality teachers and the first class facilities, who wouldn’t want to keep visiting YogaVenue? The classes take place throughout the day, the earliest at 9.30am and the latest at 7.30pm during the week. All Hot Yoga classes last 90 minutes. YogaVenue also teaches Vinyasa Yoga. The Vinyasa studio downstairs is also very peaceful and has a beautiful brick wall at one end of the room. Here YogaVenue offers Vinyasa classes (a flowing style of Hatha Yoga) everyday of the week. Vinyasa classes are 90 or 60 minutes. You know what this means don’t you - there's no excuse not to go after work!!! So go grab a couple of towels and prepare to sweat!!! 2 Avenue Lane Oxford, OX4 1YF Tel: 01865 390864 www.yogavenue.co.uk
