Lead Article The Merry Wives of Windsor It is testament to the OSC’s excellent productions and audience loyalty that this fantastic organisation survived the floods and return to perform another day, with a brand new production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. We are making a special appeal to the public to please come and give your support to their treasured but endangered open air events. SO even if the summer refuses to come to us, the OSC are determined to bring it to Oxford. The quintessential English garden of Wadham College provides the perfect ambiance for the show, set by director Gemma Fairlie (A Midsummer Night’s Dream 2012) at the annual Windsor Summer Fete. The gardens will be transformed with audience inter active activities including a coconut shy, Pimms tent and tombola and a stellar cast of eleven (eight living actors and three very talented puppets), who will bring Shakespeare’s most uproarious, irreverent and feel-good comedy to life. Think The Great British Bake Off meets Desperate Housewives. How long can the immaculate hair-do’s, perfect cup cakes and pristine tablecloths hide the deceit and spilt tea before the Big Bun Fight begins?! This most accessible of Shakespeare’s comedies was written by the royal command of Elizabeth I who desired to see a play about Falstaff in love - though he remains less the lover and more the loveable rogue! Much like the annual summer fete, the OSC open-air shows are a stalwart and essential part of the Oxford summer. The fact that they go on at all, in the face of pretty consistent adversity (namely the weather) is testament to the OSC and the audience’s shared desire to enjoy the beauty and serenity of our green and pleasant land, not to mention fantastic productions, come rain or shine. The show opens for a one-off performance at the stunning private estate of Cornbury Park in Charlbury, at 2.30pm Sunday 30 June before transferring to Oxford until 16 August. The OSC, now in its 11th year, has a national reputation through its work in Oxford and with the Historic Royal Palaces of the Tower of London, Hampton Court and Kensington, for exceptional open-air and site- specific professional productions. Lord of the Flies Friday 5th - Sunday 7th July: A plane crashes on an uninhabited island leaving a group of school boys as the only survivors. With no parents and no rules to obey the boys’ delicate sense of order soon begins to collapse. In the summer of 1953, William Golding submitted to his publishers a book ‘about children on an island, children who behave in the way children really would behave’. Sixty years later, by kind permission of William Golding Limited, Magdalen College School Theatre Academy premieres a new adaptation of Golding’s iconic novel. This production is the first spoken version to include music and, in particular, song to tell the story.
The Secret Life of You and Me Friday 5th July: Lowri leads a double life. By day she ponders the passing of time, sifting through the fractured memories of people with dementia. By night she makes art in strange places: fleeting, filmic moments. All to draw meaning from our jumble-sale lives. But the telescope has turned on this meddling voyeur. You are invited to witness her attempt to piece together a sparkling constellation from stuff, love and memories; to understand what we are, how we fit together and what we leave behind.
Push Me, Pull You! Friday 9th - Saturday 10th August: The UK premiere of a strikingly beautiful new piece of circus, in which you won’t quite believe your eyes. Using a combination of traditional circus skills and daring dance acrobatics, “Push Me, Pull You!” is an exciting and compelling show about the friendship, trust and unique relationship between performer and backstage technician. Accompanied by original music, the talented pair lead you on an unusual journey inside a seemingly impossible circus act. Together they show what is normally hidden in the dark.

Monsters University Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University. But during his first semester at MU, Mike's plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot Sully. The pair's out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University's elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.
The Wolverine Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world, he will face a host of unexpected and deadly opponents in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality.
Pacific Rim When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.
The World's End 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by Gary King, a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World's End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind's. Reaching The World's End is the least of their worries.
The Internship Billy and Nick are salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital world. Trying to prove they are not obsolete, they defy the odds by talking their way into a coveted internship at Google, along with a battalion of brilliant college students. But, gaining entrance to this utopia is only half the battle. Now they must compete with a group of the nation's most elite, tech-savvy geniuses to prove that necessity really is the mother of re-invention.

A haven of creativity and adventure set in the heart of the Cotswold landscape, The Bushcraft Company has to be the most exciting venue for kids Oxfordshire has to offer. If your children have a love of outdoor adventure, or you’d like them to cultivate one, a summer camp with The Bushcraft Company could be just the thing. Residential camps, designed to indulge your child’s inner explorer, are held over the school summer holidays, with children divided into two age groups (7 to 11 and 11 to 15). Held deep in an ancient forest within a private estate, it’s an atmospheric setting to make new friends, learn new skills, sleep under the stars and leave the Xbox behind. With a chance to escape to the wild and discover a world where children can climb trees, cook lunch over a campfire, swim in the lake and spend the evening playing games; summer camps at The Bushcraft Company are the ultimate first adventure. With the option of 3-day or 5-day camps, we have something for every child, whether they are a first-time camper or a survival enthusiast. With years of experience, and an extensive knowledge of the outdoors, we are passionate about giving children unforgettable experiences. After each action-packed day, children will sleep on camp in groups of 8-10, in large single sex bell tents. All meals are freshly prepared on site, and include meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, bread and pasta, as well as plenty of snacks. Typical meals include spaghetti bolognese, roast salmon and lamb kebabs. Our fun-filled summer camps are a great way to keep your children active and entertained during the school holidays. With a wide range of team-based activities available each day, Summer Camps are the perfect place for children to experience new things in a safe, controlled environment and leave with memories which will last a lifetime. With dates available from the 22nd of July to the 30th of August 2013, a taste of adventure is only a few weeks away, but be sure to book early to avoid disappointment! Restaurant Review
In Oxford’s High Street sits one of the oldest established tea houses in the country. Run by two charming brothers, Engl (General Manager) and Head Chef Jay, The Rose has developed an excellent loyal customer base but is equally popular with visitors to Oxford who find its location perfect for breakfast, lunch or tea whilst touring Oxford’s colleges and the Botanic Garden. Although The Rose has an excellent reputation for tea and especially Jay’s delicious freshly baked scones (they are baked fresh up to every two hours), breakfast and lunch are becoming very popular to the extent that Jay admits he has to turn customers away, “most weekends we have to turn away up to 40 customers a day, which isn’t great but it shows we must be doing something right!” Engl also admits that the success of The Rose has exceeded their expectations, to the extent that the hope of opening in the evenings has become more of a reality sooner rather than later, explains Engl, “We originally hoped to open in the evenings later this summer but it is likely we will be opening from 6pm to 10pm as early as July. We will be announcing this on the website as soon as we have confirmed everything, but we are almost there. We have had some unexpected success with private parties so we are very confident with the demand during the days and our success with private parties that evenings will be equally popular.” So what does ex Wadham College sous chef Jay keep his customers coming back for? “Our cuisine is French with fresh and organic ingredients. The food is fresh and when it’s gone, it’s gone! The menu is short and fresh and seems to work. The restaurant is relatively small with approximately 60 covers so freshness is key.” The organic theme dominates the menu, with ‘The All Organic Traditional English’ sounding delicious, especially as an American customer’s very own order of the same dish passes by our table mid interview – not only did it look great but it smelt delicious!” The menu underlines the simple but effective approach taken by Head Chef Jay and with The Rose Organic Salmon Fishcakes and Chargrilled Free Range Chicken particularly taking my eye. Mind you, the Organic Beef Burger, the wide range of Ciabattas, the mouthwatering desserts…… where do you stop?!?!? It all looks so good and as the dishes continue to waft past us, it’s a wonder we didn’t just sit tight for the day and try and get through the whole menu! Restaurant Review
Little Clarendon Street is one of Oxfordshire’s most cosmopolitan streets with bars aplenty and a good selection of restaurants, but you’d be hard pressed to find a better restaurant in the whole of Oxfordshire than Pierre Victoire. Winner of the inaugural Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards Public Vote, this smart French restaurant is a banker when it comes to quality of food, great atmosphere and value for money – an extremely difficult ‘tricolor’ achievement. It really is a shame that the restaurant can’t adorn the trottoir in front of the restaurant with al fresco dining, but, as the name suggests, Little Clarendon Street isn’t big enough! We had the pleasure of our 16 year old son’s company on a rare night out, and Ed is hard to please when it comes to food, I can tell you! But as soon as the fresh bread was served, Ed savoured every morsel. Tina and I chose the pan fried tuna steak served with roasted vegetables and sunblush tomato dressing from the specials board, whilst Ed selected the meatballs from the main menu. I’ve never had a tuna steak like it. For a starter, it was ideal in size, but moist, tasty and beautifully presented. I had to pass comment to our ever attentive floor manager (who was excellent by the way), who promised to pass on our compliments to the chef. Ed devoured the meatballs and assured me they were ‘safe’ which I presume means good in ‘16 year old speak’. For the main event, Tina stayed loyal to the specials board, choosing the oven baked poussin set on a gratin dauphinois, sautéed mushrooms and haricots verts with a truffle jus. Tina was as enamoured with this as her starter. I went for the Escalope de Porc, flambéed in Calvados and served on spring greens, with a prune and cream sauce. For £12.50, it’s simply remarkable value. A night out with the parents can be a bit of a chore for a 16 year old, so Ed was determined to make hay. He plumped for the Filet de Bœuf, an Oxfordshire fillet steak served with parmentier potatoes, roasted tomato, mushrooms & haricots verts, and a Béarnaise sauce – and for good measure, even though it was an ‘or’ on the menu, Ed had ‘red wine jus’ as well! He loved it – including both sauces! We had to leave it there… no we didn’t! We had dessert….and it was very good! I was talked into the Apricot Frangipane with Amaretto chantilly and Ed had the Praline Cheesecake with a bitter ganache. In the words of a 16 year old, Pierre Victoire is safe, very safe! Make sure you get along soon – but just to be on the really ‘safe’ side, make sure you book! Restaurant Review
The White Hart in Fyfield is without doubt one of the best gastro-restaurants in Oxfordshire, but what makes this even more notable is that the husband and wife owner team had never previously owned a restaurant and Mark had never cooked professionally before! This goes to show what a combination of obvious natural talent, good taste and boundless enthusiasm can do when given free reign culminating in an exceptional evening and a ‘must return’ conclusion. With an interesting history going back many hundreds of years, The White Hart has clearly been at the centre of village life for generations. Mark and Kay took the property on eight years ago, and have clearly invested a lot of time and effort in bringing the restaurant up to a very high standard. Kay is very much the face of the restaurant, and greeted us with a warm smile and took the time to introduce us to the menu, of which she was clearly proud. Whilst not hugely extensive, the menu is varied and well put together, with the emphasis on seasonal and local produce. After taking our order, we were served with an 'amusebouche', or little gift from the kitchen, along with some home-made breads - most of which were imaginative and very good which set the tone for the meal itself. For starters, we chose the home-cured gravadlax with cucumber salad and pan-fried pigeon breast on a caramelised red onion tart with local wild garlic, both of which were full of flavour. The main courses were of a good size, but what struck us was the enterprise and sophistication with which they had been put together. My wife had pan-fried cod, which can often be quite bland, but not on this occasion. What lifted this dish was the unusual choice of home-made piccalilli as the main accompaniment. The pickled vegetables and creamy mustard source mixed perfectly, and brought out the flavour of the fish. The other main course choice was a house favourite – Cotswold lamb with moussaka – and no wonder why. The dessert choice was well-balanced, with a nice mix of the sort of traditional dishes that you would expect to see on a gastro-pub menu. However, the real stand out dish was a really inventive dessert of blood orange and beetroot panna cotta with candied oranges. This was absolutely delicious, and I hope it will become a house signature dish for a future visit. The wine list was well constructed and we found a nice white to go with the fish, and a herby and rich Rioja, which worked well with the pigeon and lamb. Like everything else with the meal, the end of dinner coffee was excellent, and served with a tiny chocolate macaroon, which rounded the meal off perfectly. With a glass of wine, water and coffees, the meal worked out at just under £40 per person, which represents excellent and exceptional value for a meal of this quality. A visit to The White Hart is a must. I must add that this was a Restaurant Awards review, so our identities were not known until the end of the meal, so this was as genuine an experience as you can get. Full marks to Kay and Mark for a great experience and a wonderful meal. Main Road, Fyfield, Abingdon, OX13 5LW Tel: 01865 390585 Web: www.whitehart-fyfield.com

Restaurant Review
The Old Parsonage Restaurant serves the very best of British food using the finest produce to create superb traditional dishes. The classic seasonal menu will appeal to everyone - expect lobster and saffron tart, watercress soup with cucumber relish or a plate of British charcuterie, followed by either rib of Rofford lamb, braised baby gem and broad beans or whole Dover sole, seaweed butter and Jersey royals. There is a good selection of dishes on the menu to suit different tastes and pockets. Situated at the end of St Giles my friend and I entered the Parsonage via the elegant candlelit terrace of this stone building dating back to 1660. The bar and restaurant are painted Russian red and covered with original cartoons and portraits. The fire was lit, the atmosphere was buzzing, the staff friendly and knowledgeable. To start, I ordered heritage tomatoes with goats curd and my friend, quail and foie gras with pickled rhubarb. Main courses arrived in the form of ashed cerney soufflé with green salad and the Old Parsonage fillet steak sandwich, which came with confit shallots and dressed leaves. Both were delicious and cooked perfectly. Our waitress recommended the Bourgogne Chardonnay and a Spanish Rioja to accompany the steak. The waitress informed us that fish and shellfish arrive several times a week from Brixham and Jersey. Beef, lamb and pork come from owner Jeremy Mogford’s Oxfordshire farm, giving them complete traceability. Puddings, an apple tarte fine with cinnamon ice cream and a plateful of English cheese with fresh figs ended the meal perfectly. The Parsonage has atmosphere in bucket loads and is clearly popular. You can just have a drink at the bar if you don’t want to eat. We both agreed that we would come for afternoon tea within the week. There is a set lunch and early supper menu which is popular with regulars, and if weather permits, you can dine outside on the elegant, sheltered terrace where tables are always laid in fine weather. 1 Banbury Rd Oxford OX2 6NN Tel: 01865 310210 Web: www.oldparsonage-hotel.co.uk

Restaurant Review
The Tree hotel, snuggled in Oxford’s leafy Iffley Village, has quiz nights, ladies’ nights and curry nights, but offers something extra special on a Sunday- an international buffet that truly lives up to its name. International in every sense of the word, the sheer variety is enough to make your mouth water before you’ve even started eagerly piling up your plate. This is a real dining extravaganza, with a buffet and carvery offering a carefully chosen selection of authentic dishes from around the world. Whether you're a carnivore, a fish lover or a vegetarian, and whether you have a particular penchant for a classic English roast with roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and vegetables, an Indian curry with poppadoms and lime pickle, Chinese noodles with prawn crackers or an Italian pasta oozing with cheese, your tastes will be more than satisfied. If you’re feeling adventurous, mix and match them together- these dishes enhance and complement each other perfectly. Highlights include the beautifully poached fish with fragrant saffron butter and the delicious Saag Gosht (lamb and spinach curry). Before all that, you could start off with soup and/or salads- even these are impressively wide-ranging, with ingredients including pineapple, seafood and bacon as well as classics such as mozzarella and tomato. If you still have some room afterwards, a dessert of particular note (from yet another wide-ranging list) is the white chocolate and amaretto soufflé, which looked and tasted exquisite. A perfect choice for chocoholics. You can even choose where to eat it all- for a special occasion there’s the restaurant area, on a relaxed Sunday afternoon you can chill out in the bar area, and on a sunny day there’s the lovely secluded garden and patio, which, with its play area, is ideal for families. It may be a cliché to say there's something for everyone, but nowhere can that saying be more true than at the Tree hotel. Make sure you set aside a Sunday, bring your family and friends, and turn up hungry so you can try as many dishes as possible. You'll be filling up your plate again and again (that’s the beauty of a buffet, after all). Managing director Kavita Pal stresses the importance of keeping customers happy (especially during a recession) by offering good quality service, good value for money and ‘a varied selection of high quality food.’ Tick, tick and tick. An international buffet may be an ambitious concept but here it is a unique and memorable triumph. 63 Church Way, Iffley Village, Oxford, OX4 4EY 01865 775974 Web: iffley.treehotel.co.uk

Restaurant Review
The Trout is one of Oxford's iconic eating places. I am reliably-informed by friends who were studying in Oxford in the late 1960s and early 70s, that The Trout was a favourite haunt for students - walking, cycling, jogging or even punting down the river to enjoy a beer or three. The Trout is also clearly popular with visitors. On the night that we were there, it wasn't just the serving staff that was international, as we heard a myriad of languages and accents. Many were obviously familiar with The Trout's illustrious literary and TV connections. You are left in little doubt that the restaurant had featured in many of Colin Dexter's works with his eponymous heroes, Morse and Lewis. Messrs Thaw, Whately and Fox certainly unravelled many complicated criminal trails whilst enjoying a beer, overlooking the water from the restaurant's large outdoor terrace. In good weather, the terrace packs out quickly meaning that there is frequently a wait for tables. Even on a relatively quiet Monday evening most of the tables were occupied, and we were pleased that we had reserved a table using the restaurant's highly efficient online booking system. As far as the food itself is concerned, it's quite difficult to pigeon-hole or categorise The Trout's menu with clear Mediterranean, Italian and Asian influences on the. As starters, we had soft-shelled crab and calamari in a tempura batter, and bresola with mozzarella and beetroot, both of which were first class. For the main courses, we opted to have fish off the 'specials' menu. My wife had the butterfly-filleted trout with mozzarella-couscous, roasted garlic and cherry tomatoes. I was sceptical how the combination of fish and cheese would work, but surprisingly it did. I had the baked pollock with chorizo and a tomato salsa verde. Again, both dishes were excellent, presented expertly with a smile! For dessert we opted for the delicious Italian vanilla and chocolate 'gelato'. We enjoyed an excellent Spanish Chardonnay and a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc during the meal and coffee post-dinner. The Trout is a warhorse of a restaurant. Every time I visit it gets better. The staff are friendly and engaging, the restaurant itself is full of character – you could visit ten times and not be in the same room once – and the churning river passing by the terrace on a summer’s day is enough to stir the child in all of us, waiting, hoping for a glimpse of that elusive trout. Words can’t really describe The Trout. It has everything, and more. So you must go, again, and again, and again. My word it’s worth it!

Restaurant Review
Gurkha Village I admit, I really didn’t know what to expect when I was asked to visit Gurkha Village in Kidlington. Being a South Oxford boy anything north of the ring-road seems like a long way away. However, by the end of the evening I was delighted I made the journey! Gurkha Village is an old pub transformed into a contemporary Nepalese restaurant, conveniently located on the main road through the centre of Kidlington. It has a large parking area and a garden at the back where children can run around, and with two dining areas and a comfortable bar can cater equally well for large parties and intimate couples on a romantic evening out in a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. If you are wondering what Nepalese food is, then think of all the taste and delicious sauces of Indian cuisine, but leaning more towards the delicate flavours of Himalayan spices. The Gurkha Village menu was well laid out with a very good range of Nepalese vegetarian and meat-dishes under the starters and house specials sections alongside the familiar ‘Indian’ curries. If there is too much choice, then there is a helpful and great value limited menu offering three courses for £13. My vegetarian guest and I opted for a range of starters to share, not one of which was disappointing – deliciously succulent Vegetable Momo dumplings with a ground chutney dip, a spicy and flavourful pan-fried Vegetable Puri served on a puri bread (almost big enough for a main!), and crunchy deep fried Pakora with mint sauce. For mains I can highly recommend the Chef’s Special Masu Farsi – a truly delicious lamb and red pumpkin curry with fresh ginger that ranks among the best curries I have eaten. Every dish was generously portioned and beautifully presented by the friendly and knowledgeable staff (who guided my guest to her choice of a creamy Vegetable Bahar); and with every bite it was clear that the chef believed in using quality ingredients – good cuts of lamb and fresh, prepared on the premises vegetables. We visited on a Tuesday evening and there were never more than a couple of tables free at any one time. Why was it so popular? Well, it is a very convenient location, everyone was welcoming and friendly, and the service was good, but it was the food that stole the show – among the best curries I’ve eaten in Oxfordshire, and that makes it was well worth a visit, but make sure you book in advance! 174 Oxford Rd Kidlington OX5 1EA Tel: 01865 378180 Web: www.gurkhavillagekidlington.co.uk
