WELCOME TO BROWNS OXFORD Browns Oxford, set near the centre of ‘that sweet city with her dreaming spires’, was the second branch of Browns to open. It has become a landmark in the city, an institution not quite as ancient as the university’s world-famous colleges, but one which has nonetheless stood the test of time. For many years the building was a Morris garage, which we converted into one of the first of its kind: an English brasserie. And the scene out of the windows is also pure England: across the road is the church of St Giles, the church hall and a characterful terrace of 18th century houses. But we’re also just a 5 minute walk away from the busy centre of the city.

As someone who spends a substantial proportion of his life installed in Quod Brasserie on Oxford’s High Street, it will come as no surprise that I’m a fan of what Jeremy Mogford has created for the city. He has shaken the Oxford dining scene out of its complacency, providing benchmarks against which others are judged. Of course it’s always possible to niggle about details, but if you looking for consistently friendly service, great tasting food and stylish design, you need look no further. And so it is with Gees on Banbury Road. Re-born after a complete refurbishment, the conservatory restaurant is filled with plants and mature olive trees, is less formal than before, and now makes the most of its unique architecture. Change has not been confined to the front of house. A wood-fired oven takes centre-stage in the kitchen, and cuts of beef, pork, lamb and venison are cooked over a charcoal grill. There is a welcome simplicity to the menu, and it’s reassuring that supplies of meet and veg come from Mogford’s own Oxfordshire farm. If I was to get picky, I’m not sure that deep-fried soft shell crab (supplied frozen from Indonesia) sits well on a menu that takes pride in local and seasonal products. On my first visit to the new Gees I was accompanied by Madhur Jaffrey, the acclaimed food writer and broadcaster. If this put any added pressure on the kitchen brigade or waiting staff it certainly didn’t show. In addition to the flawless service, highlights included my queen scallops, Madhur’s Iberico ham and, undoubtedly, the prune ice cream with pedro ximenez sherry. The only low-point was our freshly baked bread, which was rather heavy and had a dense consistency, possibly a result of the dough being too dry. Later in the same week I returned, this time to host the annual Oxford Gastronomica Dinner, part of the Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival. Designed by Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar, the menu must have been out of the chefs’ comfort zone, but its perfect execution displayed their versatility and skill. And the setting – well in the evening it is truly magical. Rarely have I been to an event that has stimulated such positive comment. Of course, great company, much wine and (I didn’t dream this) Patti Boulaye giving a rendition of ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, all helped – but the warmth of the welcome from the team at Gees was perhaps the most important ingredient. 61 Banbury Rd, Oxford, OX2 6PE Tel: 01865 553540 Web: www.gees-restaurant.co.uk

"I am keen that Gatineau patisserie should always reflect my drive for quality and flair. While keeping one eye on the latest European trends in patisserie, my aim is to introduce new and exciting creations into our product range - in order to thrill and delight our customers." As a resident of Oxfordshire, there’s every chance you will have visited Summertown. There’s every chance you will have walked past the shops, but there’s every chance you haven’t discovered Gatineau. Put it on the top of your list. This is a delight nobody should miss. With hand crafted delicacies including macarons, croissants, quiches and the most elegant cakes for that special occasion, not only can you experience unbelievable tastes, you can also feel the industry behind every creation with every mouthful. From now on the mid morning self indulgence will never have tasted so good! In Oxford Magazine found out more about the brains behind Gatineau, HERVÉ GATINEAU. “I set up this business six years ago. Having trained in France for a few years, I completed my training at Maison Blanc from 1997 and then heard that this unit, a former patisserie itself, was becoming free. “Maison Blanc was a different proposition to what we have here, but I learned everything I know about production. But here at Gatineau we have time to focus on one shop and I like to think there is more detail and a sense of artisan in everything we make here. The team (of just six) is also a lot smaller and so we all have to make an impression on everything we do.” Gatineau have their fantastic signature items but try to bring out some seasonal specials, as HERVÉ explains. “We do have a few key products that stay, but a lot changes change due to the season – we want our clients to be excited and reinvigorated by our new creations. We have Easter, Christmas, Mother’s Day, but then also of course we do special occasions like wedding cakes, French traditional wedding cakes and so on.” With a thriving wholesale business including clients such as Gee’s, The Old Parsonage, Quod, The Grand Café and Java, it’s not just the queues in Summertown that HERVÉ and his team have to satisfy, which brings with it its own pressures. “The premises are challenging to say the least and we would like to move so we can expand more naturally, but for now we are working well and the business is growing.” So for a taste of fresh perfection, pop in to Gatineau – the team are there from 4.30am but you can pop in at 7am! Magnifique! 209 Banbury Road Summertown Oxford. OX2 7HQ Tel: 01865 311 779 Web: www.gatineau.uk.com Twitter: @gatineau1

Does Oxford finish at the Railway Station? Go west just a short distance, where The River Hotel overlooks the River Thames and Osney Island conservation area beside Osney Bridge. Just a short stroll away along the Thames tow path you can catch glimpses of the City towards Binsey and Wolvercote or Osney Lock, Folly Bridge punts, College boats and beyond. The building is owned by an Oxford University college, built in the 1870's and lived in by the Master-builder Mayor of Oxford, Thomas Kingerlee - the company and family still trade in Oxford. Formerly known as The Bridge House Hotel in the 1930's when it boasted as 'having refrigeration' - B&B was just ÂŁ1.75p in old money! Later, Ehrsam Hotel, the family was quoted by John Betjeman. The Hotel has moved on since then, run traditionally, to quote a recent New Yorker guests 'Quintessentially Oxford'. All bedrooms offer their own bath, shower and toilet, the usual in-room expectations of Freeview TV, clock / radio, hair-dryer, kettle for tea and coffee. There is also free wifi and ample car parking on site for residents. 'What time is breakfast?' is a frequent enquiry - this title will be used by owner Pat Jones for her book, as and when she gets down to writing it! In the meantime, the Hotel rate includes table service breakfast, overlooking the Thames. cooked to order with a generous buffet to start. The Hotel welcomes guests from far and wide, visitors to Oxford businesses, colleges, academics, family visits, grand-parents etc.... Mid-week and week-enders, Thames walkers, tourists of course! The Hotel slogan is 'Large enough to be comfortable, small enough to be friendly' which matches the hotel's image, offering good value with friendly service. Hope House Woodstock is the ancestral family home of the Woodstock Money family. Julia, the last surviving Money in the UK, runs the business with her eldest son Paul Hageman. The house was built circa 1708 – at the same time as Blenheim Palace – and it is one of two grand houses in Woodstock designed in Vanbrughian style with baroque architecture. Now the brains behind one of the country’s leading boutique accommodation establishments, ranked in the top 10 best luxury hotels by Tripadvisor 2013, Paul is at the heart of Hope House Woodstock and has created the perfect home from home with attentive but discreet five star service. Beginning with the initial reservation enquiry your experience will be handled personally by Paul or one of his dedicated reception team colleagues and the team at Hope House Woodstock will always be on hand to assist with your itinerary to ensure your time in Woodstock is a memorable one. All suites feature a master bedroom with a King size bed; a second bedroom with zip link twin/king beds (not in the one bed suite); air conditioning throughout; work desk and free Wi-Fi in all rooms; Italian Beltrami bed linen; hand made Mulberry silk duvets and pillows; remote lighting, Sony SKY TV, Blu-Ray player, in-wall iPod docks via surround sound system; heated marbled floors in all bathrooms; luxurious selection of Bulgari toiletries and bath salts; Victorian roll top steel baths, Monsoon showers; LCD bathroom TV with Sky; sensibly priced fully stocked bar; allocated car parking space. Within 500 metres of the front door are fourteen eateries. Some fine AA two rosette restaurants, lively brasseries and gastro pubs. There are also 15 public houses within walking distance! And if that’s not enough, a hearty locally sourced organic breakfast is served in the Vanbrugh Restaurant, finalist in Food & Travel magazine best UK hotel 2012, complete with locally produced jams. Food is sourced from local organic suppliers who have been meticulously selected based on freshness and quality of their produce. With Royal Doulton fine bone china and Riedel glassware, have breakfast in style! What makes breakfast so special? Eat when you want, freshly squeezed juices of your choice - melon and blueberry? a choice of Long Crendon black smoked bacon (steeped in molasses) or green back bacon, Hope House sausages made from their own recipe, 12 whole leaf teas and 3 filter coffees to choose from. Restaurant Review
Oxford can now boast the best in premium pub dining with an emphasis on top quality food served in a stunning city location. A team of entrepreneurs last year transformed The Red Lion on the high street in Oxford into a premium dining experience, giving the pub a stylish, modern feel whilst promising to keep its traditional roots alive. It’s obvious they have put a lot of thought into every facet of this pub, from the food and the surroundings to the welcome from the team. Its menu changes with the seasons and is modern British, comfortably interwoven with elements from the Mediterranean, ranging from traditional favourites such as fish and chips and steaks to freshly made pizzas, pastas and daily chef specials. The outdoor patio is really something to encounter, and is best enjoyed with a glass of their marvellous wine, cask ale, superchilled draft or whatever your favourite beverage may be. The Red Lion is a favourite throughout the year, with a cosy, comforting atmosphere in the winter and a vibrant, refreshing ambiance in the summer. The team strives to use only the freshest, most seasonal ingredients in all of their cooking, so that their guests can enjoy the best dining experience they could possibly offer. And you don’t have to go for the full works if you don’t want to, just grab a light bite and your drink of choice at the bar if you prefer – there is simply something for everyone, whatever the occasion. Expect only the best in this brilliant venue, and service with a smile every time. Staff are attentive, friendly and incredibly brainy!!!! Test John on his ability to remember orders for up to ten people – that’s starters and main courses! We’ve not beaten him yet but there’s a test for you! For private parties, The Red Lion has a fabulous room overlooking the bar which gives you a sanctuary within this vibrant city centre establishment. 10 can easily sit in this wonderful room. During the summer, The Red Lion can boast one of Oxford City Centre’s few outside spaces to enjoy a pre dinner drink or a lazy afternoon. With seating for at least one hundred, it’s a great space to meet friends, with laughter spilling out onto the adjoining streets, making The Red Lion a focal point for Oxford’s discerning pub and restaurant goers. 14 Gloucester St, Oxford Ox1 2BN Tel: 01865 726255 Web: www.redlionoxford.co.uk

Restaurant Review
We had a pre concert booking for Browns at 5pm on a Wednesday evening in May, earlier than usual for dinner but it was nice to sit down and relax without time pressure. When I arrived, the girls (my wife and 12 year old daughter, Abi) were already seated, tucking into bread, olives and oils, seated in the window. I was greeted by the engaging Ahara, who was to be the star of the show. I ordered a Peroni, a veritable Olympic torch of a drink! It certainly quenched my thirst! Browns was just starting to fill up, with couples and large groups out for a night enjoying the lighter evenings – it’s just as busy on a Thursday for Lobster Thursday. Ahara took our food order and we were soon tucking into scallops, prawn cocktail and pate. Whilst Tina chose a glass of house champagne to accompany her starter, I had a glass of beautifully chilled and wonderfully dry Chablis. For the main course, both of the girls were tempted by the succulent burgers which the table alongside had taken delivery of early in our visit – they did look good! I went for the fish and chips which were exquisite! Moist, plump and incredibly tasty, my tempura battered cod loin steak, with crushed minted peas, tartare sauce and Browns chunky chips and house ketchup was scrumptious. Presentation of the food at Browns was certainly impressive. My cod was accompanied by a tricolour of sauces, as previously referred to, and the burgers were certainly ‘plumped up’ as burgers should be. I have already alluded to the excellent service, but must throw Ahara into the spotlight. Diligent, professional and attentive, we couldn’t have asked for more. If there is a record for picking up AND replacing a customer’s knife when they clumsily drop it on the floor (yes, me!), then Ahara should hold the title – I reckon she took a flat three seconds from the knife hitting the floor! Although the deserts looked more than enticing, we were all full. Tina had a latte whilst Abi had a baby cappuccino and I polished off the last of my glorious Chablis. A solid 8 ½ out of 10 for Browns – great food, first class food and a great atmosphere. This was just the right aperitif to a wonderful concert. Next time you’re in Oxford, try Browns for breakfast, lunch, tea or dinner, or why not just pop in for a drink, a refreshing cocktail perhaps. Impeccable from Browns. 5 - 11 Woodstock Road Oxford OX2 6HA Tel: 01865 511995 www.browns-restaurants
