Welcome to Living in Oxford We are delighted to welcome City Sightseeing to our April front cover for at least the 10th consecutive year – thank you Jane and the team for your fantastic support. The team are pleased to announce a new Meadows & Bridges Tour in addition to the City & University Tour (see below) which takes in the hotels and guest houses around the city. Shannon has also been busy with a review of the City & University Tour for City Sightseeing and also a visit to our good friends at Gatineau in Summertown where Fabien tells more about this beautiful patisserie. Matt Wright reviews The Bear and Ragged Staff in Cumnor – a real hidden gem just outside of the City Centre. Perfect for a meal or an even more relaxing meal and stay in one of the wonderful rooms on site. We’ve also got a list of all the winners at this year’s Living in Oxford Awards. Well done to Creation Theatre for taking the top prize – Oxfordshire’s Favourite! There are loads of listings of events in this month’s edition of Living in Oxford Magazine so what excuse have you got? It’s even sunny as I write for a change! Have a wonderful April. City Sightseeing

City Sightseeing Oxford are introducing a second route to the city this summer. Starting on Friday 25th March 2016, the Meadows & Bridges tour offers an extension to the existing historic City & University Tour. The new route takes 40 minutes and takes in both Iffley and Abingdon Roads, connecting via Donnington Bridge and Red Bridge Park & Ride and the newly located Coach Park. The route will help to serve the hotels and guest houses located around the route. Tickets are valid on both tours for a duration of 24 or 48 hours, giving more flexibility and there are several city centre stops where passengers can interchange between the two tours. Walking routes are also highlighted to passengers giving the option to walk as well as ride around Oxford, potentially extending the Visitor experience to include some riverside walks and more of the popular sites around the city. Jane Marshall, City Sightseeing Oxford General Manager says, “We are very excited about this new venture, we have been considering various ways to extend our tour and to offer a more inclusive experience for visitors and local residents for a while and think that now is the time to expand the options. We want to offer the same high standard of experience to our customers with the bonus of seeing more of Oxford.” “We are hoping that by Introducing a stop at the Redbridge Park & Ride we will also help motorists to access the sites and attractions more easily and cheaply. I think the addition of this new tour will not only do this, but give added value and a different perspective of our City.” A call to City Sightseeing on 01865 790522 will answer any questions you might have on either of the tours.

Accommodation Review:

The Bear & Ragged Staff

Reviewed by Matthew Wright 13th March

It’s fair to say that The Bear & Ragged Staff is steeped in history. From the 450 year old bedrooms, you can look out onto open fields where Cumnor Place once stood, home to Robert Dudley, consort of Queen Elizabeth I – it was here that his wife ‘suspiciously’ died, the ensuing scandal preventing the Queen from marrying Dudley, and so history weaved its rich tapestry… I recount this story, as told by Mark (the larger than life proprietor) with pint in hand, admiring the original frieze from Cumnor Place which sits above the roaring log fire in the Old Pub, packed with people enjoying both the expansive Sunday lunches and the 6-Nations Rugby. In short, a true Country Inn in the original sense, where people from all walks of life come together to eat, to drink, and to sleep. The bedrooms reflect this sense of character. We stayed in ‘The Landlord's Wing’ above the Old Pub, where a circular staircase of dark rich mahogany takes you up to a self-contained suite. Fittingly, the bed is super king-sized (with apologies to Elizabeth I – they don’t do super queen-sized!), with soft cotton sheets, and a duvet so plump it practically begs to be snuggled up in. The room is full of thoughtful homely touches, from the glass-stoppered bottle of milk in the fridge to the over-sized tea cups & saucers and a ‘proper’ kettle – none of that travel kettle and small mealy-mouthed mug business here! The rooms have been amazingly popular since the first four were refurbished and opened in 2011 (having previously served as accommodation for a succession of landlords and pub staff), with a further five added in 2014, taking the total up to nine. Judging by the 95% yearround occupancy rate, these have been exceedingly well-received by visitors to Oxfordshire, attracted by the convenient location (10 minutes to Oxford centre by bus with none of the parking ‘rage’), excellent restaurant (with an imaginative wine list), and a unique character forged by 450 years of history. There are ghostly rumours that some of these characters still exist around the place, but understandably so, as The Bear & Ragged Staff isn’t somewhere you’d want to leave in a hurry…

Patisserie Review:

Gatineau Patisserie Reviewed by Shannon Durand 15th March

Coming from France, it was nice to have the opportunity to meet Fabien Gautier, the manager and company director who works with Hervé Gatineau, the owner of this wonderful patisserie and bakery in Oxford. Because almost all of Gatineau’s team is French and as the smell of bread perfumed the entire store, I could feel at home for a while…! After 10 years working at Maison Blanc, Hervé Gatineau wanted to have his own business and decided to open his bakery in 2006. His main goal was to create the French touch in Oxford, in a local area where it is enjoyable to live, and Summertown seemed to be the perfect place. A few years ago, the team decided to arrange the place differently and to open up the kitchen directly to the customers. It is now possible for the public to watch the team making their bread and patisseries whilst they choose what to buy – it’s a great mix. They wanted to show the clientele that everything is made on site; especially that it is cooked the same day by professional chefs. This new format entertains the children as much as the adults. Furthermore, the smell of fresh bread coming out of the oven is reminiscent of French bakeries. Gatineau offers a wide range of French cakes and viennoiseries that you cannot find anywhere else in Oxford. Croissants, pains au chocolat, brioches not forgetting to mention chocolate cake, éclairs, macaroons and many other pastries, are exactly the same as French ones! Because of the lack of space in the premises and how much hard work it is for the chefs (who start working at 3.30 in the morning!) they cannot offer everything they wanted. However, because of the Gatineau’s success and the desire to satisfy its customers, Gatineau has some ideas to grow its business (but I will keep those a secret). As a typical French person, I am really meticulous concerning the baking of bread. I had the chance to taste one of the three kinds of baguettes Gatineau offer (white, poppy-seed and rustic). It is perfect: crispy outside and not too cooked inside. Just delicious! Actually, it is not surprising since it is really important for them to have the highest quality. This is the reason why each special ingredient is imported from France by an English company - the butter and milk, for example come from Normandy, to make the best bread and cakes on site. Otherwise, they make absolutely everything, except chocolate which requires a special room to be made, but I suppose we can forgive them that! Gatineau has built its reputation in Oxfordshire and works with several cafés and restaurants. So, if you do not have the opportunity to come to Summertown, you still have the chance to try some of Gatineau’s speciality cakes at one of their partnerships establishments, such as the Organic Café or the Grand Café, located in the heart of Oxford.

Charities Leukaemia Research Twitter: twitter.com/beatbloodcancer Web: www.leukaemialymphomaresearch.org.uk We are Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, your UK blood cancer charity. Every year we stop more people dying of blood cancer and our researchers are even working to stop people developing blood cancer in the first place. We improve the lives of blood cancer patients with cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma because we believe everyone should be able to live their life to the full.

Thinking of Oscar Twitter: twitter.com/thinkingofoscar Email: thinkingofoscar@gmail.com Web: www.thinkingofoscar.com Thinking of Oscar is a charity founded in the memory of Oscar Noah Cole, who died when he was just 16 months old. We are a small charity with a big ambition — to save lives by improving hospital care for young children. Currently we are raising funds for a new Paediatric Procedures Unit for Oxford’s John Radcliffe Children’s hospital. We have already raised more than £75,000 of the £100,000 required. We have now published our first book. The Thinking of Oscar Cookbook was inspired by the generosity Oscar’s family experienced in the weeks and months after he died. Home-cooked meals began to arrive on their doorstep, and this continued day after day. The cookbook began as a collection of recipes from friends, family and neighbours. As the campaign grew, professional chefs including Raymond Blanc, Tom Kerridge and The Hairy Bikers began to donate recipes too. If you would like to make a donation to this Oxfordshire Children’s Charity you can purchase a copy of the book in hardcopy (donation from £12.50) or ebook (donation from £7.50) via the link below or just search for Thinking of Oscar on Just Giving. http://campaign.justgiving.com/charity/thinkingofoscar/cookbook
