Welcome to Living in Oxford Welcome to February! We hope your year has been going swimmingly thus far and your heating bills aren’t too high. We seem to have a bit of a healthcare theme going on with this issue - Featured on the cover and taking the lead this issue are the wonderful team at Tara Tripp Hearing Centre, with Clinic95 further in talking about their breakthrough dental services, and a look at the wonderful care home that is Lady Nuffield. At the end of January our business magazine, B4, was presented with an award by The Rt Hon David Cameron to celebrate the magazine’s 10th anniversary. You can read more about this and Experience Oxfordshire’s (EO) excellent networking event at Eynsham Hall in this edition. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Hayley Beer, Chief Executive of EO, for her support. We have a great range of other features for you with a review of our team’s own Christmas dinner choice last year - Marco’s New York Italian - and also a review of our local Jamie’s Italian (I think someone in the office must be a fan of the cuisine!). We also hear from our friends over at Savvy Group on their key involvement in this year’s Business In Oxford event. You can read more about the event at www.businessinoxford.com. Another big event coming up is the second annual Living In Oxford Awards which will be held at the Weston Library on 25th February. The equipment they have at Tara Tripp Hearing Care is phenomenal. She put a camera down my ear and showed me a photo. What a mess and I immediately thought no wonder I am having problems. She then spent some time with her suction device to clean up both ears. What a difference that made.

Christmas with Marco Pierre White

42

Living In Oxford Magazine had their office Christmas Dinner at the wonderful Marco Pierre White’s restaurant on High Street in Oxford this December. It was a great evening with a lovely warm atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff. Some of us had been to Marco’s previously but for me it was the first time. I was not disappointed!

Jamie’s Italian

44

You’ve got to hand it to Jamie and his team, they know how to rustle up a good meal. We couldn’t fault any aspect of the dining experience, from the warm welcome to the expert service – Lucas did a sterling job – to Adriana who was our delightful hostess for the evening.

Tara Tripp Hearing Centre

Reviewed by Colin Rosser 10th February

I have known that I needed help with my hearing for a number of years and had been on the point of buying a hearing aid quite a few times. I had been approached numerous times by various organisations but it wasn’t until the specialist at a well-known national chain asked who I most annoyed with my inability to hear. Without hesitation I said my wife. When she came in with me shortly afterwards and I had a test she was amazed what little I actually heard. My main problem is that I can’t differentiate consonants. That sealed it and I purchased a pair of the latest Phonak models. When they arrived and before they were fitted I was told my ears needed syringing as I tend to accumulate a lot of wax. I then developed an infection and needed ear drops. After trying to get on with the hearing aid for several weeks the aids were continually getting blocked up which was most frustrating as I had started to rely on them. It was then that the specialist suggested I contact Tara Tripp Hearing Care, previously my doctor had also recommended her. Talk about a turning point! The equipment they have at Tara Tripp Hearing Care is phenomenal. She put a camera down my ear and showed me a photo. What a mess and I immediately thought no wonder I am having problems. She then spent some time with her suction device to clean up both ears. What a difference that made. Tara also discovered I had some sort of eczema where I lost surface skin in the ear which contributed to the problem and advised seeing my doctor who prescribed Betnovate Scalp Application. From then on there has been hardly any problems. Why on earth I didn’t see Tara earlier is a mystery as it seems only logical that anyone who is interested in a hearing aid should first of all visit Tara for inspection and treatment. Tara Tripp Hearing Care not only has the most modern equipment for ear treatment but also provides hearing aids. I can’t speak highly enough of her and her team and anyone that is remotely interested in a hearing aid their first stop should undoubtedly be Tara Tripp.

The Villiers Quartet Friday 5th February: This is the second concert by the Villiers Quartet this season and is art of their Radcliffe Chamber Music Residency at the University of Oxford. William Sterndale Bennet may be a less familiar name than that of Mendelssohn, yet Bennet was in fact an astounding all-rounder, becoming Principal of the Royal Academy of Music. As a young pianist he was invited to Germany, where both Mendelssohn and Schumann – already admirers of his compositional talent – became his firm friends. Pre-concert talk at 6.30pm with Barry Sterndale Bennett in the Weston Library Lecture Theatre. Call 01865 244806 to reserve you space as numbers are limited. Tickets: £15 (Students £5) Box Office 01865 244806, Online www.musicatoxford.com Time: 7.30pm Venue: Holywell Music Room

Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Friday 12th February: Sir Roger Norrington returns to the city of his birth with some of the jewels of the classical era, presenting a snapshot of the repertoire for which he is most celebrated. The audience can expect to find exuberance barely concealed in Beethoven’s scherzo, the quirks of Haydn’s opening movement that provoked the nickname ‘The Hen’, and a taste of Saint-Georges’ most successful comic opera – as well as the beauty of one of Mozart’s most cherished concertos. Tickets: £10 - £42 (Students & Under 18s from £5) Box Office 01865 244806, Online www.musicatoxford.com Time: 7.30pm Venue: Sheldonian Theatre

Clare Hammond (piano) Friday 19th February: Clare Hammond is a pianist of remarkable virtuosity and musicianship. Rachmaninov described Medtner, six years his senior, as ‘the greatest living composer’ in his diary for 1915, so it is fitting to couple two of their respective major works for piano, the well-known Variations on a Theme of Corelli with Medtner’s evocatively romantic, grandly structured Sonata no. 1. Tickets: £10 - £42 (Students & Under 18s from £5) Box Office: 01865 244806, Online: www.musicatoxford.com Time: 7.30pm Venue: SJE Arts, St John the Evangelist Church

Marco’s

Christmas with Marco Pierre White

Reviewed by Lorna Dodson 12th December 2015

Living In Oxford Magazine had their office Christmas Dinner at the wonderful Marco Pierre White’s New York Italian restaurant on High Street in Oxford this December. It was a great evening with a lovely warm atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff. Some of us had been to Marco’s previously but for me it was the first time. I was not disappointed! Marco’s normally serves a vast variety of Italian and New York inspired dishes, and is a restaurant that can offer something for everyone and every taste. From fresh fish, to home made pizza and pasta, Marco’s has a mouth watering set of dishes on their extensive menu. We however were of course trying their Christmas Dinner on this particular visit. The dinner was sumptuous - For starters I opted for chicken liver pâté, red onion chutney & a toasted ciabatta. The chutney was superb, the pâté juicy and flavoursome and the ciabatta toasted to perfection. The main event consisted of succulent turkey wrapped in smokey ham with a stuffing centre, honey glazed vegetables (including parsnips, my favourite!), sweet cranberry sauce and the best bit: Pigs in blankets, all rested in pan juices. For desert I went with old reliable: Chocolate. A melting chocolate truffle cake to be precise. It was heavenly. I’m a bit of a chocoholic anyway so maybe I’m biased but this was probably the best chocolate ‘cake’ I’ve had in recent years. I say ‘cake’ because it was so dense and truffle-like I’m not sure the word really suits. We plied ourselves with wine late into the evening, feeling relaxed and cosy in this stunning venue. With its central location and great service, Marco’s is a perfect venue for every occasion and celebration, and I’ll definitely be going back to try their usual menu.

Restaurant Review:

Jamie’s Italian

Reviewed by Richard Rosser 16th January

The temperatures had dropped considerably as we made our way to central Oxford and a family meal at Jamie’s Italian on George Street, bang smack in the centre of Oxford. I remember when Jamie’s opened, back in 2008, you couldn’t get a table for love nor money. We had booked, so we were the lucky ones as about twenty hopefuls crowded the entrance to this tardis of an eatery – it must seat well over 100 over two floors – clearly demonstrating that Jamie hadn’t lost his touch. I hadn’t realised that Oxford was the first of what is now a 40 strong worldwide empire. You’ve got to hand it to Jamie and his team, they know how to rustle up a good meal. We couldn’t fault any aspect of the dining experience, from the warm welcome to the expert service – Lucas did a sterling job – to Adriana who was our delightful hostess for the evening. Ed and I went for the Italian pâté bruschetta which was divine – silky smooth chicken-liver pâté with pancetta, vin santo & Parmesan. Jack plumped for the Artisan Breads (comprising freshly baked focaccia, ciabatta, seeded crackerbread, sourdough and grissini with extra virgin olive oil, balsamic and tapenade), which I must admit I had a nibble on when he wasn’t looking and the tapenade was absolutely delicious. Tina had the crispy squid with garlic and lemon mayo, chilli, parsley and fried garlic. Jamie wouldn’t do any old garlic bread would he, he does Ultimate Garlic Bread, warm artisan buttermilk buns with garlic butter, Bella Lodi and rosemary – Beth certainly enjoyed it! Abi was saving herself for her main which she said was amazing – wild mushroom and winter greens risotto, comprising creamy carnaroli rice with winter greens, roasted mushrooms, mozzarella and extra virgin olive oil. Ed, Jack and Beth all had the Italian Steak Frite, flash-grilled prime beef steak, served with Italian-spiced skinny fires and rainbow slaw. Another triple hit with the youngsters! Clean plates all around. Tina and I both chose from the Specials Board – delivered expertly by the charming Lucas. I’m not a big mushroom fan, but Lucas sold the ‘Fantastic home made wriggly pappardelle pasta with ‘happy’ free range Norfolk chicken in a creamy wild mushroom and mascarpone sauce finished with crumbly ricotta’. It sounded tasty and it lived up to the billing… absolutely scrumptious! Tina chose the ‘Beautiful risotto of Scottish langoustine tail, sweet tomatoes, chilli and samphire, topped with extra virgin oil’. Another success! Amalfi Lemon Meringue Cheesecake for dessert was absolutely phenomenal! Velvety mascarpone and lemon cheesecake topped with Italian meringue, served with lemon curd and blackcurrants. Full marks Mr Oliver, and you’ve got me liking mushrooms and cheesecake! Whatever next? Bread and butter pudding and marzipan? Now that would be an achievement!

Health & Beauty Article:

Life-Changing Dentistry™ Not so long ago if you had loose, unsightly teeth, fillings that were failing, or uncomfortable dentures, sensible, reliable and affordable answers to your problem were hard to find. You may have found eating, even talking, difficult. But all you could do was grin and bear it… even though there was precious little to grin about. Today, of course, implants provide a solution. But the fear of being temporarily without teeth and the anticipated cost are real concerns for many people. Life-Changing Dentistry addresses and overcomes these concerns and provides a solution that is IMMEDIATELY functional, comfortable, predictable and affordable. For this procedure we use either the Fast & Fixed™ or the All-on-4™ immediate implant restoration systems. In just a few hours of painless surgery, we will place implants and then attach a fixed bridge to those implants. This gives you perfect biomechanical support for the restoration. With same-day restorations, the temporary bridge is fabricated in our inhouse dental laboratory immediately after implants have been placed. Our dental technician, John Davies (who makes the bridge), will be involved at every stage in order to become familiar with the patient’s mouth, teeth and gums and uses this knowledge to produce a restoration that perfectly matches the rest of your natural teeth in terms of both colour and tooth shape. This attention to detail applies not only to the permanent restoration but also to the temporary prosthesis too. The real joy of our process is that you come to the practice in the morning, have the implants placed and walk out at the end of the day with a full set of revitalised teeth, a massive smile on your face and a spring in your step. Dr Maria Hardman, alongside dedicated, experienced and fully trained clinical teams, delivers personalised, high quality treatments from modern, state-of-the-art dental practices using proven and effective techniques. Patients are always put at the centre of our planning to ensure that each treatment is fully suitable, understood and based on individual hopes and aspirations. Savvy and Business in Oxford

Savvy proudly sponsors BIO 2016

Business in Oxford (BIO) is all about showcasing local businesses, providing networking opportunities and inspiring the next generation of bright young things. What better fit could there be for the lead sponsor of this years event, therefore, than Savvy Group? Steve Dunne, Managing Director and founder of Savvy Group, is a successful young entrepreneur, who has set up Savvy Construction Ltd, which he runs with Jon Peart and Savvy Maintenance and Renovations Ltd, which, he runs with his brother David Dunne. The business was started from scratch 5 years ago and there was a clear vision as to where Steve wanted to take the company and what he wanted to achieve. Over the last 5 years the business has grown into a substantial concern and employs a large team of happy and rewarded staff. The group is forecast to turnover in excess of 14 million in 2015-2016. Needless to say there is also a clear vision for Savvy Group over the next 5 years and beyond and in this article, as well as at the BIO event in one of the dedicated POD (presentation) sessions Savvy will be sharing some of their key business insights and knowledge with the delegates. Savvy’s POD will focus on some key principles for growing a successful business and will cover some of the topics below: 1. Vision, Focus, Discipline, Determination 2. Not being afraid of failure and Never Giving Up, some ideas will fail and some clients you will lose. But one of the keys to success is to brush yourself off and keep trying until you succeed 3. Respect, look after and know your customers, this is key to gaining repeat business as well as winning new customers 4. Respect, value and reward your staff and surround yourself with a great team 5. Strive to be Number 1 in your field – create new ways of doing things and use unconventional thinking to stay ahead of the game 6. Embrace technology to save you time and money 7. Create a strong and defined brand that is relevant and appealing to your consumers 8. Enjoy what you do with a passion 9. Blood, Sweat and Tears – will yield results 10. De-stress – It’s really important for your own mental wellbeing and all those who work and do business with you, for you to be fresh, happy and performing at your best at all times. All businesses are different and although the above suggestions aren’t all it takes to run a successful business, they cover some of the key essentials and provide a solid platform from which to achieve business success. It’s a real credit to Oxford that we are home to such great entrepreneurial success stories. Hopefully, some of the advice that Steve and Savvy Group have shared with us here will generate interest and potentially inspire a new generation of young entrepreneurs in the area. This is, of course, brilliant for Oxfordshire and the local economy and we hope to see lots more aspirational stories and advice at the BIO event in April.
