What if there was a mode of transport that allowed you to board in Oxford’s medieval High St, be whisked through the scenic Chiltern countryside and dropped off at a selection of convenient central London locations? That’s where the X90 comes in.

Routine maintenance of properties in whatever shape or form at regular intervals throughout the year can save us a lot of time and money in the long run. It’s something we often overlook because we’re simply too busy with others things going on in our lives, but something we should not forget.
Thinking of Oscar
58
On December 1st 2015 we are publishing our first book. The Thinking of Oscar Cookbook was inspired by the generosity Oscar’s family experienced in the weeks and months after he died. Home-cooked meals began to arrive on their doorstep, and this continued day after day.

Oxford Bus Company Oxford has a lot to offer - architecture, academia, culture and innovation. Many of us have strong links to London however and despite its strengths Oxford is often overlooked as a destination for major cultural events. What if there was a mode of transport that allowed you to board in Oxford’s medieval High St, be whisked through the scenic Chiltern countryside and dropped off at a selection of convenient central London locations? That’s where the X90 comes in. Operated by Oxford Bus Company, the X90 coach service has been connecting Oxonians with the capital since the 1970s. The Oxford to London coach route is, in fact, the busiest in the UK. It’s not hard to see why. The X90 has always been about quality, not quantity. Legroom is generous - well above the national average seen on other coaches and trains. There’s free WiFi, power sockets, USB charging points, air-conditioning, on-board toilets... the list goes on. Oxford Bus Company have invested over £4 million on their coach fleet in the last 2 years, and it shows. Buying your ticket is simple, too. They’ve recently introduced a mobile app which allows you to buy your tickets on the go, without the hassle of loose change. Pricing is excellent: adult return tickets are just £18, or £15 if you’re leaving after 3pm. Concessions are also available. Why not give it a go? Find out more at X90london.co.uk, or call 01865 785 400.

Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 & Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition Saturday 23rd January 2016: Siberian-born violinist Vadim Repin brings his trademark virtuosity and poetic ardour to Oxford in a stunning evocation of Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto. Outlawed by Stalinist doctrine for years after its composition, the work continues to captivate audiences with its bewitching synthesis of alluring narrative, political angst and forbidden burlesque. Ravel’s vivid illustration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition redefines the acoustic memorial to Mussorgsky’s cherished friend, the artist Victor Hartmann. Touring Parisian catacombs, old castles and a witch’s den, Hartmann’s paintings come to life in a blaze of orchestral fervour under the baton of Marios Papadopoulos, whose recording of Mussorgsky’s original piano version continues to be enjoyed worldwide. Supported by Geoffrey and Caroline de Jager. Location: Sheldonian Theatre, Time: 7:30pm, Tickets: £15-£50 (students £5) - Call Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra on 01865 980 980 to book.

Service Review:
Money saving ideas to help you in your home this coming year With winter and the festive season still well in swing, it may seem like that last thing on our minds but it’s as important as ever to keep on top of property maintenance issues, whether in your own domestic properties or commercial units. Routine maintenance of properties in whatever shape or form at regular intervals throughout the year can save us a lot of time and money in the long run. It’s something we often overlook because we’re simply too busy with others things going on in our lives, but something we should not forget. At Savvy Group we are made up of two complementary divisions – Maintenance and restorations, run by Dave Dunne, an electrical engineer by trade, and Construction, run by Jon Peart, a Chartered Surveyor – delivering exciting high quality building schemes in the Oxfordshire and the surrounding areas. Because it’s the New Year and everyone is feeling a little frugal at this time of year as well as full of good intentions for fresh starts, we thought we’d be kind and help you save some pennies so you have more to spend on your new gym membership. Compiled below is a short check list of items we should all be monitoring at regular intervals on our properties to save us money and more importantly to keep us safe: 1. Look outside for weak points in your pointing and any tiles missing from the roof, which can both compromise whether protection on your home 2. Check and clear gutters regularly and check for any tree branches over hanging the roof and gutter, trim back and clear if any are present 3. Check for cracked or lifting floor tiles as well as any damp smells. Flooring should be hard and solid. If it’s soft or squishy then the wood is rotten and you could have a leak elsewhere 4. Think of checking light fittings and switches and potentially upgrading light sources to LED, which are much more energy efficient and lower maintenance 5. If you have a flickering light or buzzing electrical socket don’t ignore it, it could be trying to tell you something and is worth getting it looked at by a qualified electrician. So let’s all start off 2016 as we mean to go on and make sure we are regularly making maintenance checks on our homes to save money and keep us safe and if all this really doesn’t float your boat, you know where we are, and we’d be more than happy to come by and take a look for you. Happy 2016 from everyone at Savvy Savvy Maintenance & Renovations Tel: 01865 920020 Savvy Construction Tel: 01865 920040 www.livinginoxford.com

Service Article:
Thinking of Oscar Thinking of Oscar is a charity founded in the memory of Oscar Noah Cole, who died when he was just 16 months old. We are a small charity with a big ambition — to save lives by improving hospital care for young children. Currently we are raising funds for a new Paediatric Procedures Unit for Oxford’s John Radcliffe Children’s hospital. We have already raised more than £60,000 of the £100,000 required. On December 1st 2015 we are publishing our first book. The Thinking of Oscar Cookbook was inspired by the generosity Oscar’s family experienced in the weeks and months after he died. Home-cooked meals began to arrive on their doorstep, and this continued day after day. The cookbook began as a collection of recipes from friends, family and neighbours. As the campaign grew, professional chefs including Raymond Blanc, Tom Kerridge and The Hairy Bikers began to donate recipes too. If you would like to make a donation to this Oxfordshire Children’s Charity this Christmas you can purchase a copy of the book in hardcopy (donation from £10 + £2.50 postage and packing) or ebook (donation from £7.50) via the link below or just search for Thinking of Oscar on Just Giving. http://campaign.justgiving.com/charity/thinkingofoscar/cookbook
