“The newly opened restaurant of Mel Tanyeri. Talk about a transportation to a different world, to a Mediterranean setting, in a dining room adorned with overpainted canvas prints by Picasso. And what a joy it was! The restaurant is beautifully decorated with a soft gold finish and Tifanny lighting, creating an intimate and welcoming atmosphere.”

“The revamped website, which also finished its makeover in Dec-15, has been a big success - over 30% of bookings are now from mobile devices. So, if it’s mobility that you’re after, where better than the Royal Oxford?”

“We were greeted like old friends on arrival, attended to carefully but unobtrusively throughout and found that even after a long hard day at the office we couldn’t but relax in the fun atmosphere of the place. Thankfully its not canned and manufactured ‘fun’ in the dated TGI Friday style but instead it feels spontaneous”

Mezzeto Reviewed by Sue & Colin Rosser 10th February

On a cold February evening my wife and I had been to a special showing of the Andy Warhol Collection at The Ashmolean Museum. From there we went to ‘Mezzeto’ the newly opened restaurant of Mel Tanyeri. Talk about a transportation to a different world, to a Mediterranean setting, in a dining room adorned with overpainted canvas prints by Picasso. And what a joy it was! The restaurant is beautifully decorated with a soft gold finish and Tifanny lighting, creating an intimate and welcoming atmosphere. The food was exceptional with an extensive ’tapas’ menu which originates from the Mediterranean to the Middle East. We were served by Francisco and his team and what a feast we had. The thing about tapas are that you can share, and Mel plans to have even more larger sharing dishes in his new menu, which in addition to cold plates will have selections of grilled meats and fish platters. These will be especially suited for larger groups. We had broad beans, artichokes, sun blushed tomatoes and goats cheese followed by beetroot borani, which is beetroot and Greek yoghurt dip with feta, dill and walnuts. These were the vegetable and salad dishes and were absolutely stunning. We then had the Chicken Tagine (Almonds, orange flower water and apricots) and my particular favourite ‘Chicharrones’, slow roasted pork belly from Cadiz. I have never tasted better pork in my life. For dessert Francisco persuaded us to have the pomegranate and vodka sorbet, with Greek yoghurt ice cream which was different and refreshing. The portions were much larger than I anticipated but so good that we finished (almost) everything. Mel himself sources his wines and finds labels that you will struggle to see anywhere else. The Ramon Bilbao Tempranillo, a 2013 Rioja that Sue had, and thought was amazing. I had a Chardonnay from France, Domain Preignes Le Vieux, 2015 which was not acidic but just rounded and perfect. Greek and Turkish beers are also served as well as Ouzo and Raki, and of course Turkish Coffee. The service is impeccable and this is a must go to restaurant. We thoroughly recommend it.

Tasmin Little violin & Martin Roscoe piano Friday 4th March: Coming to Music at Oxford just a few months after their newly-released Beethoven recording, the ‘inspired teaming of Tasmin Little and Martin Roscoe’ (Strad Magazine) will bring their consummate artistry to three pillars of the repertoire. Schubert’s Fantasy in C was composed towards the end of his life, for Josef Slavik, who was considered by Schubert to be the ‘second Paganini’. Rodolphe Kreutzer, another virtuoso violinist and the dedicatee of Beethoven’s Violin Sonata no. 9, refused in fact to perform the work, reputedly declaring it unplayable. Fortunately for us, Tasmin has no such qualms! Pre-concert talk with Tasmin Little and Thomas Hyde at 6.30pm. Free to ticket holders Time: s7.30pm Venue: Sheldonian Theatre

Oxford Bach Choir: Verdi Requiem Friday 12th March: The Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni, regarded in his native country as on a par with Goethe, was the impetus for this most dramatic of requiem masses. When Manzoni died in 1873, all of Italy mourned, and Giuseppe Verdi resolved to compose a substantial work in memory of his literary hero. One year later, on the first anniversary of the writer’s death, Verdi conducted the premiere of his Requiem in San Marco, Milan, to enormous public acclaim. Such was the work’s immediate success that three more performances quickly followed at La Scala, and this enduring, highly emotive work has been a mainstay of the repertoire ever since. Seminar in Ethnomusicology and Sound Studies with Elizabeth Tolbert Thursday 3rd March: Meaningful Music, Unmediated Sound: An Evolutionary History: What and How Does Music Mean? I suggest that the conditions of representation that allow for music to be apprehended as socially and emotionally meaningful are biologically grounded in our evolutionary history. Specifically, I propose that music emerged from the evolution of the human capacity for culture (Tomasello 1999, 2005), and is a means of creating joint attentions and intentions in order to achieve social goals. Convenor: Professor Jason Stanyek Admission: Free, Time: 5pm, Venue: St John’s College Barn (Kendrew Quad)

Performing a mixture of small and large ensemble pieces internationally recognised soloists, Daniel Grimwood and Madeline Easton will be joined by Sinfonia Adesso and Oxford based Alaskan conductor Cayenna Ponchione. Pre concert talk in the Holywell Music Room, Time: 6.30pm Composers, Nicola LeFanu and Rhian Samuel in conversation, free entry. Seminar in Medieval and Renaissance Music with Emma Hornby (University of Bristol) Thursday 10th March: Medieval psalters as witnesses to liturgical song: The Iberian case At first glance, a medieval psalter has little to tell the musicologist, apart from being a useful point of reference for checking the origins of chant texts. Two Iberian psalters, however, are crucial witnesses to the Old Hispanic liturgy (BNE 10001, and LBL add. 30851; images of both manuscripts are now freely available online). In this paper, I explore how these psalters preserve a quite different cycle of ferial psalmody than the familiar Benedictine weekly cursus. Convenor: Margaret Bent Admission: Free admission, Time: 5pm Venue: Wharton Room, All Souls College

Art Review:

Christ Church Picture Gallery

Reviewed by Audrey Valée 12th February

Christ Church is unique among the Oxford and Cambridge colleges in possessing an important collection of Old Master paintings and drawings. In 1765, General John Guise, a soldier and art collector, bequeathed his collection of over 200 paintings and almost 2000 drawings to his former college. This extraordinary gift enabled Christ Church to introduce art into Oxford education without the necessity to travel to Italy or to gain access to stately homes (which held the majority of art collections in the country). At that date the collection was unequalled by any other Oxford institution. The collection is strongest in Italian art, from the 14th to the 18th century. Some of the early religious panels are painted by now-anonymous masters, but they allow the viewer to trace the beginnings of the professional ‘artist’ as we know him. Later works in the collection include paintings by highlyacclaimed artists such as Filippino Lippi, Tintoretto, Veronese, Annibale Carracci, and Salvator Rosa. There are also some remarkable works by northern painters such as Anthony van Dyck, Frans Hals, and Hugo van der Goes. General John Guise’s extraordinary bequest celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2015. On display through 31st March 2016 is 250 Reasons for 250 Years, a collaborative exhibition in which members of the Christ Church community, artists, scholars, students, and others wrote down their thoughts about why art matters, why we should celebrate art benefactors like Guise, and why those who preserve, research, present, and create art still matter today. 250 of these cards have been installed in the Picture Gallery, one for each year since the Guise bequest. Other 2016 exhibitions include Filippino Lippi and Drawing in Florence around 1500 (3rd March - 26th June 2016) and Changing Roles – Changing Characters: From Lady to Saint and back (26th February – 10th July 2016). Information about more exhibitions can be found on our website. Please visit us soon!

Accommodation Review:

The Royal Oxford Hotel

Reviewed by Matt Wright 15th January

You could say the Christmas came early for the Royal Oxford Hotel - the 15th of December 2015 to be precise. That was the date when the new roundabout and Central Square in front of the hotel was completed, lending a sudden tranquil air to what had previously been a busy thoroughfare. Some advantages are self-evident - rooms which had been soundproofed for heavy traffic (double-glazed, then secondary glazed on top) now exude a zen-like calm. Other advantages though will only become apparent in Spring when hotel guests will be able to enjoy their drinks & meals al fresco (weather permitting!) at new outdoor seating overlooking the square. Hospitality. That’s the key differentiator here. Oh, and service too. Marzena, the manageress, has been here for 16 years and knows what it takes to keep guests coming back time and time again (a Professor at the nearby Said Business School is currently in his 7th year of residency) from the warm front-desk welcome to... The attached restaurant is Korean and was full of locals (Koreans that is) which is always a good sign. The sharing dishes appeared especially popular, comprising of a raised burner in the middle of the table, rather like a Korean fondue (without the cheese!) from which everybody helped themselves to noodles, meat, seafood…etc. It looked very good, but we were in a hurry and plumped for the 3-course set menu which was very tasty. Incidentally, the restaurant also provides the in-hotel meals, and I can safely report that any concerns over a Korean cooked breakfast the next morning were quickly assuaged – it was exactly the same as full English breakfast, with not a dash of kimchi in sight! Rooms are well-appointed, complete with nice touches such as proper kettles that can be lifted from their base to be filled up (a personal bugbear of mine is when you have to unplug and drag leads around the room behind you) together with all the usual accompaniments – tea, coffee, biscuits…etc. The revamped website, which also finished its makeover in Dec-15, has been a big success - over 30% of bookings are now from mobile devices. So, if it’s mobility that you’re after, where better than the Royal Oxford? – park securely (at a special hotel rate), walk serenely (it’s only 5 mins to the Centre - not possible from most ‘Oxford’ hotels) and leave all your worries behind.

Restaurant Review:

Thaikhun Reviewed by Nicola Poole 27th January

This was my third visit to Thaikhun, the first for review purposes. I am always amazed at how busy the place is, lunchtime or evening, any day of the week, a large proportion of the tables are always occupied. I love the ambience and authenticity of this relatively new spot in Oxford. Its incredible that in the very same space that formerly hosted the very generic Fire & Stone, and then the eerily empty and bland Cleaver, there now exists a small piece of Bangkok. The chain’s values focus entirely around: Samakee (team working), Sanook (having fun) and delivering Hao Dao (5 star) customer service. I find it hard to fault them on these in any way. We were greeted like old friends on arrival, attended to carefully but unobtrusively throughout and found that even after a long hard day at the office we couldn’t but relax in the fun atmosphere of the place. Thankfully its not canned and manufactured ‘fun’ in the dated TGI Friday style but instead it feels spontaneous: the team clearly have a genuine passion for ensuring that the customer has a buzzy and engaging experience. We were helped through the menu choices on request, and really enjoyed all of our meals. My charcoal grilled sea bass fillet in banana leaves was memorable for all the right reasons. After starters and mains, there wasn’t much room for pudding but we persevered in the name of a complete review and were not disappointed. Banana fritters and rich vanilla ice cream for me and Thai pancakes with custard for my companion: both devoured with audible enjoyment. Although we didn’t spend time there as our table was available right away, there is a fabulous intimate bar area for pre-drinks and dining: the coconut mojito looked sorely tempting. The Oxford branch of Thaikhun (pronounced Tycoon) is clearly a roaring success. It is one of six locations that have opened in the UK in the last year with more due to open soon. Many more I’d say: there can be little doubt that there’s long been a space in the market for a nationwide Thai food chain and with this winning formula, I am pretty sure these guys will fill it.

Café Review:

Café Loco Reviewed by Elisabeth and Shannon 25th January

Shannon and I had lunch in Café Loco in the city centre of Oxford. Café Loco is located near Christ Church College, within easy walking distance from High Street. We ordered a Cappuccino and a Hot Chocolate, which were served really quickly although it was quite busy at the time. We were seated at a table next to the window where we had a great view of Christ Church College and Christ Church Meadow. The atmosphere in the café is warm and friendly. On one hand the furniture and decoration with stone walls is modern but on the other hand it reminded us of a cosy old house with the wooden flooring, tables and chairs. The tables were well lit with pleasantly warm lighting. The tables are not too close to one another either which is good because you can have a normal conversation without anyone unwittingly eavesdropping. The menu is quite expansive: You can decide between different baguettes, jacket potatoes, salads and different types of breakfast. There is also a large selection of Afternoon Teas and you can also choose lunch from the black board (Today’s Specials). Café Loco offers a new, delicious soup every day. I chose the Loco Club Sandwich with Italian herb chicken, smoked bacon, Swiss cheese and secret loco sauce because of the recommendation from our waitress. The sandwich was served with Kettle Chips and a leafy salad. It was really delicious and generous – almost too much for a lunch. Almost! Shannon decided on a hot chocolate which was very good; it reminded her of her childhood when her grandmother prepared her hot chocolate. For lunch Shannon had an Italian chicken baguette. The products which are used are fresh and organic, which really lends to the wonderful flavours. The quantities are generous and for such quality and a quantity it is not expensive. All of the staff members are really nice and friendly. They checked in on us every now and then to make sure our meals were enjoyable. Moreover the waitresses are full of smiles and are very kind to the customers. They show that the restaurant is a friendly place. That is very pleasant! Café Loco is not only a normal café - it is divided into two areas and there are also two entrances - the first area is the café where you can have lunch and the other part is a take-away. The take-away selection is quite large and you can choose between several different coffees. This take-away is a little bit different because Café Loco is offering handmade sandwiches and fresh orange juice. If you want you can also buy cakes, cookies and other pastries – it is perfect with a delicious coffee to go. A family, professionals or friends can drink or eat something here in a good atmosphere. Everybody can enjoy a good time here in Café Loco while eating good sandwiches, cakes and other pastries with low prices. So, enjoy your meal!
