Welcome to Living in Oxford Welcome to the May edition of Living in Oxford. Lucy Howard had the enviable task of reviewing Cosmo in this edition who also adorn our front cover. Cosmo have been in Oxford for over a year now and by all accounts Lucy, as I am sure countless other diners have, had a wonderful time! We also feature Aidan Meller Galleries and one of our longest serving customers, Sarah Wiseman and her fantastic gallery in South Parade, Summertown. Sarah has an Alison Pullen exhibition running from 6th to 27th May and you can read more about the exhibition in this edition. As usual, Living in Oxford Magazine is packed full of great things to do in Oxfordshire throughout May so make sure you have a good read of all the listings in this month’s edition. Don’t forget BIO2017 on 11th May at The King’s Centre in Osney Mead – you can book your tickets at www.businessinoxford.com, Oxfordshire’s biggest business to business showcase. Enjoy May, Richard Rosser Editor, Living In Oxford Magazine

COSMO Reviewed by Lucy Howard 15th April

COSMO is a really exciting addition to Oxford’s restaurant scene, especially for those who can never decide what they want on a menu – here you can simply have everything. This world kitchen offers a dazzling buffet of over 150 dishes from around the globe, and there are also several live cooking stations that rustle up tasty plates to order (we loved the noodle bar). Whether you’re a fan of British, Indian, Chinese, Italian or Japanese cuisine, they’re all here, and more. All the dishes are cooked in small batches and are constantly replenished, ensuring they’re always fresh, and each type of cuisine comes with its own accompaniments – the exquisite sushi comes with ear-popping wasabi, the hearty curries come with fluffy naan bread and crisp poppadoms, the wide variety of stir-fries come with eggfried rice and perfect spring rolls, and the roast beef comes with traditional English roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Also on offer is a range of salads, pizza, burgers, pasta… the list goes on. You can return to the buffet as many times as you like, and fill your plate with whatever takes your fancy (there are no rules) – but don’t forget to leave space for the mouth-watering dessert section, featuring beautiful cakes, brownies, cheesecakes, mousses, make-your-own ice-cream cones, fresh fruit and an irresistible Belgian chocolate fountain (complete with marshmallows for dipping). There really is something for everyone here – it would be hard for even the fussiest of eaters not to find something they liked at COSMO. It is exceptional value, and the service is friendly and efficient, enabling you to concentrate on eating your way around the world. This isn’t so much a restaurant as a foodie fantasy come to life. Just make sure you arrive with an empty stomach so you can make the most of it!

A Dog's Purpose Over the course of several lifetimes, Bailey seeks to discover ‘A Dog’s Purpose’. He and Ethan were best friends, but a dog’s life is much shorter than a human’s. Bailey and Ethan had many long, happy years together, but all things must come to an end. And yet, incredibly, Bailey is reborn into a new body, with a new owner. One day, many years later, he encounters a familiar face – could he have been reunited with an old friend?

Mindhorn Richard Thorncroft was TV’s greatest detective in the ‘80s: ‘Mindhorn’ was a sleuth with a bionic eye that let him literally see the truth. 25 years later, he’s washed up. Shuffling from audition to audition with an unconvincing toupee, he’s not exactly living the high life… until an insane serial killer calls the police and demands to speak to Detective Mindhorn. He’s convinced that the robot-eyed hero is a real person, and Thorncroft has to stop him.

Unlocked ‘Unlocked’ is a gripping action thriller about Alice, formerly one of the CIA’s top agents, who’s unexpectedly called back into action to stop a devastating biological terrorist attack on London. Her career was sidelined when she failed to get information vital to stopping an attack in Paris. But now she’s forced back onto the front lines, in a race against time to stop a deadly virus from being unleashed.

King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword An iconoclastic reinvention of the classic story, ‘King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword’ follows Arthur’s journey from growing up rough in the back streets to claiming his rightful throne. When he was a child, his father was murdered and his sinister uncle Vortigern seized the crown. But now the Sword in the Stone has revealed itself again, and the prophecy of a trueborn king is spreading among the people.

Alien: Covenant The latest chapter in the iconic sci-fi horror franchise, ‘Alien: Covenant’ chronicles the voyage of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a distant planet, whose crew makes a terrible discovery. They’re undertaking the first large-scale colonisation mission, and their new world was supposed to be a paradise. But in reality, it’s a hell: as the crew discover threats and creatures more horrific than they can imagine.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge The epic franchise returns for its fifth instalment, ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge’, which sees a crew of deadly ghost sailors, led by Captain Salazar, hunting down Jack Sparrow. Jack’s never had the best luck, and things are looking particularly bad for him now. His only hope for survival is the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but he’ll need to ally with beautiful astronomer Carina and headstrong sailor Henry to get it.

Snatched After her boyfriend dumps her on the eve of their exotic vacation, impetuous dreamer Emily Middleton (Amy Schumer) persuades her cautious mom, Linda (Goldie Hawn),to travel with her to paradise. Polar opposites, Emily and Linda soon realize that working through their differences as mother and daughter is the only way to escape the wildly outrageous jungle adventure that they have fallen into.

Alison Pullen In Situ: New Oxford Interiors 6th – 27th May, Sarah Wiseman Gallery In her new solo exhibition at Sarah Wiseman Gallery, the acclaimed artist Alison Pullen gives an artist’s eye view of Oxford. However, it’s not the exterior dreaming spires and street views as you might expect. Alison is instead drawn to interior spaces, some opulent and grand, others more hidden from view. All are at the heart of Oxford’s daily life. Using her unique method of using both painting and collage, Alison works entirely in situ, maximising her experience of each room. Using magazine pages as a ground, she picks out details, such as drapes and ceiling cornicing using a bone-matt gouache paint, allowing the glossy imagery and text below to shine through. The result is a beautiful, almost abstract image of an interior. 'The painting of a room is like a portrait of the person who owns it. That's what's important', she says. ‘I think I have a particular affinity with interiors because they are so personal. I am inspired by the thought of all the people who lived there, and what has happened in those people's lives in those rooms. Like layers of wallpaper, each person has left their mark in the room.' Visitors to the gallery can expect to see new paintings made at a variety of historic locations around Oxford; from the spectacular Blenheim Palace to the world famous Sheldonian Theatre and Oxford University Botanic Garden. Osterley Park House, Royal Hospital Chelsea and Fulham Palace are among the auspicious locations for previous work. She was commissioned to paint at Buckingham Palace, where she made a series of paintings in the Throne Room, some of which are now in the Royal Collection. Alison has worked with Sarah Wiseman Gallery for the last ten years, during which time she has acquired many admirers and collectors of her work. 40-41 South Parade, Oxford, OX2 7JL Tel: 01865 515 123 Web: www.wisegal.com 26
