Welcome to Living in Oxford Welcome to the May edition of Living in Oxford. Lucy Howard had the enviable task of reviewing Cosmo in this edition who also adorn our front cover. Cosmo have been in Oxford for over a year now and by all accounts Lucy, as I am sure countless other diners have, had a wonderful time! We also feature Aidan Meller Galleries and one of our longest serving customers, Sarah Wiseman and her fantastic gallery in South Parade, Summertown. Sarah has an Alison Pullen exhibition running from 6th to 27th May and you can read more about the exhibition in this edition. COSMO is a really exciting addition to Oxford’s restaurant scene, especially for those who can never decide what they want on a menu – here you can simply have everything. This world kitchen offers a dazzling buffet of over 150 dishes from around the globe, and there are also several live cooking stations that rustle up tasty plates to order (we loved the noodle bar). Whether you’re a fan of British, Indian, Chinese, Italian or Japanese cuisine, they’re all here, and more. All the dishes are cooked in small batches and are constantly replenished, ensuring they’re always fresh, and each type of cuisine comes with its own accompaniments – the exquisite sushi comes with ear-popping wasabi, the hearty curries come with fluffy naan bread and crisp poppadoms, the wide variety of stir-fries come with eggfried rice and perfect spring rolls, and the roast beef comes with traditional English roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Also on offer is a range of salads, pizza, burgers, pasta… the list goes on. You can return to the buffet as many times as you like, and fill your plate with whatever takes your fancy (there are no rules) – but don’t forget to leave space for the mouth-watering dessert section, featuring beautiful cakes, brownies, cheesecakes, mousses, make-your-own ice-cream cones, fresh fruit and an irresistible Belgian chocolate fountain (complete with marshmallows for dipping). There really is something for everyone here – it would be hard for even the fussiest of eaters not to find something they liked at COSMO. In 1818 St Martin’s church was rebuilt complete with tower. However, the church, apart from its tower, was demolished in 1896. The tower is all that remains today. Two ‘quarter boys’ who hit the bells at every quarter hour adorn the east facade of the church clock. Climb up 99 steps to get a sweeping view of Oxford’s spires. Alison Pullen In Situ: New Oxford Interiors 6th – 27th May, Sarah Wiseman Gallery In her new solo exhibition at Sarah Wiseman Gallery, the acclaimed artist Alison Pullen gives an artist’s eye view of Oxford. However, it’s not the exterior dreaming spires and street views as you might expect. Alison is instead drawn to interior spaces, some opulent and grand, others more hidden from view. All are at the heart of Oxford’s daily life. Using her unique method of using both painting and collage, Alison works entirely in situ, maximising her experience of each room. Using magazine pages as a ground, she picks out details, such as drapes and ceiling cornicing using a bone-matt gouache paint, allowing the glossy imagery and text below to shine through. The result is a beautiful, almost abstract image of an interior. 'The painting of a room is like a portrait of the person who owns it. That's what's important', she says. ‘I think I have a particular affinity with interiors because they are so personal. I am inspired by the thought of all the people who lived there, and what has happened in those people's lives in those rooms. Like layers of wallpaper, each person has left their mark in the room.' Visitors to the gallery can expect to see new paintings made at a variety of historic locations around Oxford; from the spectacular Blenheim Palace to the world famous Sheldonian Theatre and Oxford University Botanic Garden. Osterley Park House, Royal Hospital Chelsea and Fulham Palace are among the auspicious locations for previous work. She was commissioned to paint at Buckingham Palace, where she made a series of paintings in the Throne Room, some of which are now in the Royal Collection. Thinking of Oscar supports children and their families whilst in hospital care by funding projects and innovation over and above that supplied by the NHS. To date Thinking of Oscar has raised in excess of ÂŁ150,000 and has funded innovative vein finding devices into the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
